MOST USEFUL & COMPATIBLE APPS FOR THE HTC UNIVERSAL - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Hello everyone. I am new to this forum and will soon get my brand new untouched O2 XDA EXEC, as soon as the seller (Gaurav - very nice person) sends it via FEDEX to the United States.
Anyway, this topic is dedicated to COMPATIBLE applications designed for windows mobile 5 and the HTC UNIVERSAL. My aim is to compile the applications by category. Please post with a small description of the software and what it does, WITH LINKS PLEASE, and I will update this first post of mine to add all the sites. Any more suggestions as to what other category to add to the list is also welcome.
(1) - Fully WM5.0 compatible (explicit mention from the developer)
(2) - Not specified as compatible, but working on WM5.0
(3) - Do not work on WM5.0

Sorry for this stupid question. What is clear type?
I took the asterisk off the Tiny E Book Reader.

Cleartype is a subpixel rendering technology to make fonts more readable on lcd displays. Basically, is like antialiasing but for fonts.
http://www.microsoft.com/typography/WhatIsClearType.mspx
It sometimes just makes things look slightly blurry. I find at VGA resolution on the universal it's worse, not better. But others may disagree.

I just installed PocketZenPhone on the Jasjar last night and works great. This app is a must have to do phone profiles. Works great from my testing so far:
Pocket Zen Phone: http://zendrui.free.fr/
I am also using Pocket Weather from SBSH software which integrates nicely into the Homescreen and has VGA icons:
http://www.sbsh.net/products/pocketweather/
And Newsbreak for your RSS reading works great on the Jasjar:

I have a question about defining WM5.0 compatibility. Instead of just being a yes or no answer, I lump applications in three categories:
1 - Fully WM5.0 compatible (explicit mention from the developer)
2 - Not specified as compatible, but working on WM5.0
3 - Do not work on WM5.0
What are your thoughts on giving the applications a rating along these lines to give a little more detail on where an app stands? I know a few of the apps I'm using now don't specify WM5.0 compatibility but are working just fine. It would be nice to know about these apps that are working, perhaps with a "use at your own risk" caveat.

Cool with me. I'll integrate it now.

Please do let me know if I mislabelled anything.

(OK, the second one reads TO you, but it's great in the car!)
(I don't recommend using the FIRST one in the car.)
And a media player:

the power user's tools set

I'm new to this PPC biz (HP 100LX -> Treo180->Treo270->XdaII)
So now that I've played with my XDAii for two weeks,
I'd love to hear what other people use. This is my current setup:
1. MagicButton - this change the 'x' application hide into a real close
and show an actual bar (like winXP, but on top). It is free, small,
doesn't work too well with Phone Edition :-( but is much better
than Battery Pack 2004. There are many ways to do this...
2. cLaunch - allows setting up icons on the Today to run applications
directly (like a desktop on WinXP). Again - this is free and seems
better than Battery Pack 2004 (which combines too many features)
3. GPRS Monitor - by SPb. cute. works well.
4. TotalCommander - files manager. free, looks good, seems to have
no bugs, allow zip/unzip...
4. Multiie 3.0 - allows multiple windows, full screen, save pix, view
source in pocketIE. Also Macromedia Pocket flash 6 addon to IE.
5. WorldMate 2004 - gives world time, misc data for travelers,
and weather forcast. Promblems: won't update via GPRS,
doesn't show sunset/sunrise
6. In conjuction with WorldMAte, I'm also using Pocket Earth which
shows a neat earth display and gives sunset/rise/distance etc,
and citytime, which is much more practical but with less data...
7. PocketTV of course, to play mpg files
8. myipconfig, pocketping - simple network utilities
9. ruler, rangefinder - neat utilities
10. Calculator - the free Engineering calculator by Agang
Summary:
working the OS: MagicButton, cLaunch, TotalCommander
Internet Explorer: MultiIE, PocketFlash, GPRS monitor
multimedia: PocketTV
world time etc: Pocket Earth, WorldMate, Citytime
network utils: myipconfig, pocketping
misc: engineering calculator, ruler, rangefinder.
Still looking for: a good regeditor,
battery/memory/etc display like Battery Pack w/o the other gadets,
show all processes/threads/memory status utility,
maping tools for GPS and scanned maps,
impoved contacts (like Palm's search), calander (allowing change of
date when alarm turns on), phone (dial with one finger / big letters).
Please post what U are using!!!
A note to XDA I users: I'm sure if you all meet it will be clear most
of you learned, a year ago, which is the best RegEditor, File finder,
etc etc... but us newcomers don't want to download every little
software ever written and test it ourselves ... please guide us!

What version of WEBIS Mail? I tired V2.22 Beta and keep getting exception errors when I try to run it.
Thanks
The list of Software here is from a different site . short cut to that site is on the bottom of the list.
If the version is not there, then am sorry but i dont know myself. i can only guess the latest version of the program may work.
I personally have not test them but have installed over 6 in the list and they work ok. one thing i have noticed is when some programs come to uninstalling they dont get completly removed, i have hade to brouse to there directiry and remove that and the short cuts myself. then using pocket mechanic to remove and registry problems or missing short cuts.
If you find any of them not working or causing problem then feel free to update us with you findings.
the list is a rough guide to apps on windows mobile 5 tested by someone. but not 100% garanteed to work on the wizard.
hope this helps
WEBIS Mail V2.22 works just be sure if you select not to keep the msgs in local folders that you select the data directory in main memory and NOT Storage Card, otherwise it will crash.
There's a site here: http://www.wm5fixsite.com/
..attempting to consolidate all of this information in an organized manner.
Are all your findings already there?
Handyswitcher ignore list
Somehow i cannot add programs to the ignore list in handy switcher. I have found the corresponding registry key, but nothing i enter shows up in the program.
I would like to add the phone application to the ignore list, since it cannot/shouldnot be closed.
Anyone who knows the correct syntax (or got it working another way?)

# # RecommendationsThread # #

Hi
I think i will be a great idea to open a Thread for everyone to recommend about the best software and hardware for the wizard.
I recommend these programs:
1 - battery pack - you can see info about battery and memory, you can
switch between open windows, you can close running programs easily
2 - Vidya registry editor - you can edit the registry nicely
3 - Notem - let you record any audio include phonecalls
4 - Tv remote controller - let you control any device by infrared port.
now lets hear yours
Here are mine :
- xBar 3 - taskbar tool that allow switch from an application to another easily and lot more.
- PocketZenPhone : phone profile switcher/manager
- Sunnysoft Backup Manager : the only backup solution I know for WM 5.0
- Microsoft Voice Command
- SPB GPRS Monitor : complete solution for measuring the amounts of data transfers via your GPRS
- SPB Pocket Plus : Today plug-in with tabs. Close button that really closes. ZIP support in File Explorer. And many other features missing in WM 5.0
My list
1. Total Commander (free, excellent, and also provides an integrated registry editor)
2. Magic Button (free, fully functional task switching app, with an effective battery monitor)
3. Pocket Informant 2005 (by far the best PIM, and worth the $25 or whatever it is)
4. PQz keyboard mapper (free, gives you CTRL and ALT keys -- see http://www.nicque.com/PQz/)
5. SPB GPRS Monitor (best metering tool for GRPS)
As for voice command, and some other apps... I don't know if WM2005 doesn't increasingly provide those features. MS is doing the same as it did with the desktop in playing a wait & see strategy -- let the entrepreneurial developer community build the useful apps and then just integrate those features into the O/S.
Greg.
SPB GPRS Monitor is that one workin good on the Qtek 9100 or K-Jam?..
Bought it a few days ago, have noticed that it has a tendens to crash all the time. When i go from wlan to gprs etc etc it crashes. Any1 else havin probs?
Problems with GPRS generally
I'm having general problems with GPRS on the device in general, so I've disabled everything non-core to isolate them.
My unit's often crashing just when I turn it on and it starts checking for new e-mail.
Perhaps you're having a similar problem (e.g., rather than it being specific to GRPSMonitor?)

Click to collapse
does the tv remote controller work with the wizard? i thought the infrared port on the wizard was commercial grade.

Anyone can add their top 10 + favorite rom ?
Which essentials are on your lists ?
I hate it that msn has no email plugin or you have to go for the paid version. There is a 'photmail' program but still in beta i think.
Cheers,
Innovator

Applications that actually work on the o2 xda mini s

Could somone suggest some decent applications that I can actually get to work on this device:
I need: -
Sat nav
like a hiking nav
tv remote (if possible)
and any other decent applications you could suggest.
Thanks in advance,
Ross
I have an XDA MiniS and have loads of 3rd party apps and today plugins working. Any application written for WM05 should work!!!! I do not use sat nav (the car has one already) so cannot advise on that - however I use:
Pocket Breeze
Pocket Weather
Avantgo
Battery Bar Pro
Journal Bar
True Toolbar
WisBar
Convertor CE
Eval - Scentific Calculator (Not specifically for WM05 but works fine)
Stop time - Fancy Stop watch alarms etc (Not specifically for WM05 but works fine)
Empheris - Moon phase calendar etc (Not specifically for WM05 but works fine)
and various other file management and backup tools. :?
In fact the only application that didn't transfer from my old device (Windows 2003) was tAgenda - shame as it was a handy little app. I use Pocket Breeze now for this function.
Search on Hanandgo or Pocketgear sites for applications.
Here are some TV controllers:http://www.handango.com/SoftwareCat...=add&N=4294967089&Ntt=tv+remote&Ntk=All&Nty=1

Chris

TomTom Nav 5 does work and very well too. You just have to set up the GPS receiver according to the instructions on this site.
Dave
Sorry, I just realised that you wanted hiking GPS - "Fugawi" should work.
Dave
If you like hiking and walking try memory map...
http://www.memory-map.co.uk/
I found version 5 on edonkey and had have the full ordinance survey maps for kent and the south-east. Very good for walks. You can even use a bluetooth gps and plot the route you walk and upload it back into the PC.
The software fully installs on your PC and has an option under one of the menus to install the pocket pc version. You then send the maps you want to it (again via the software). The London A-Z I have installed is 312mb. Better invest in the 2gb San Disk SD card. (goto froogle, its Ā£55 inc del and VAT)
Resco explorer is another great app and comes with an FTP client, reg editor and allows you to connect to shares on windows PCs/servers.
Thanks
B
Most applications for free. getjar.com
TomTom Nav 7 works well on XDA Mini S.
