Yesterday i purchased an XDA II, I have TomTom, and a Garmin GPS Map 76 S.
Garmin unit works perfectly on my Laptop with Navigator software.
While at the store purchasing the XDA2 i also purchased the Serial Cable, Part No AHTX2SCN.
The end of the serial cable and the GPS cable are both Male outputs, but i managed to gerry rig a cable to connect them together.
TomTom shows a few ports, infrared, BT on com6, Serial Cable on Com1 com9, com2, serial on usb.
When i try to use Com1, the port is not available.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this ( i cant see how to disable infrared) or any suggestions as to what GPS receiver to use instead of the garmin.
Thanks.
Go to settings/connections/beams, make sure beams is unchecked. Also you may need to add a null modem adaptor between the serial cable and the xda2 cable, or you can cross over the wires by desoldering , on the serial end swap over lines 2 and 3, in other words desolder 2 and 3, put 3 where 2 was and put 2 where 3 was.
Initially there was nowhere to untick "beams", now there is and it is unchecked, i never unchecked it, and can't explain why it was like this, the XDA has been acting strange though, locking up, being very slow etc.
I will look for a null modem adaptor, and report any success or lack of back here.

Apart from the "beam" issue, you must have a "proper" null modem adapter.
It should work.
It works
Finally i got the GPS to work with some parts from Maplins ( try Radio Shack outside of the UK)
Using the Serial Lead i described above, i purchased the following items from Maplin, the guys there were very helpful, letting me take the follwoing configuration outside to check if it worked.
I purchased the follwoing :-
Low profile 9W Male to Male Gender Changer part number JW57M. I needed 2 of those. (basically two small gender changers)
9 way Null F-F 2m part No VD76. (basically a null modem cable).
Connected them all up, and GPS now works. The resulting lead is a bit untidy / long, but for now i've just used plastic ties to tidy it up a little.
Total cost of the above parts was just short of £15.
Hope this helps someone.
www.maplin.co.uk for online ordering, or 0870 264 6000 so it says on the parts.

You could have got a very tiny male>male null modem adapter from us for $5.90, or a slightly bigger one from Expansys for £2.94 !
You can do this a lot cheaper.
Several possibilities:
- buy a plug for the Qtek @ http://www.gomadic.com/ipconplug38s.html and one for the Garmin GPS @ http://www.pfranc.com and a short piece of shielded wire. You just have to connect 2 wires (Tx from the Garmin to Rx from the Qtek), and this works very well.
- for those who find the connector of the Qtek to small: buy a regular serial cable, cut off the 9 pin connector and solder a Pfranc in place.
There are a lot more possibilities, like powering everything from one source (GPS and Qtek). And price is a lot lower than ready made stuff...
Hi all. Sorry for posting this, but the forum search feature hates me so much.
Ok, I hope to get an 02 Exec as a replacement for my damaged XDA2s. Here's a few questions:
1. How long does the battery last assuming I make about 5 minutes coice calls and about average PDA use a day? The Blue Angel was appauling, is it any better?
2. My friend went to buy an Exec from the 02 shop, and 6 out of 8 units they had in the shop had dead pixels on the screens!! Is this a common problem?
3. Can you use the in built self facing camera as a webcam on pocket MSN?
4. Now there is a proper USB slot, can you use the Exec as a webcam for MSN/AIM on your home computer? I know you couldn't with previous models as the data transfer through the cable wasn't quick enough or something.
5. How does bluetooth file send work? Is there a manager like on the Blue Angel with 'browse files on a remote device' option, or is it like on the Himalaya where it is just 'beam' and searches for BT and IR devices at the same time?
6. Is it reliable as a phone?
Cheers - Mike
I have had the imate jas jar for a month now, my experience as follows:-
1. How long does the battery last assuming I make about 5 minutes coice calls and about average PDA use a day? The Blue Angel was appauling, is it any better?
I Get around 2 days out of mine with the sort of usage you describe.
2. My friend went to buy an Exec from the 02 shop, and 6 out of 8 units they had in the shop had dead pixels on the screens!! Is this a common problem?
I have no dead pixels
3. Can you use the in built self facing camera as a webcam on pocket MSN?
Some seem to have got some sort of webcam working but not on MSN (I think)
4. Now there is a proper USB slot, can you use the Exec as a webcam for MSN/AIM on your home computer? I know you couldn't with previous models as the data transfer through the cable wasn't quick enough or something.
See above
5. How does bluetooth file send work? Is there a manager like on the Blue Angel with 'browse files on a remote device' option, or is it like on the Himalaya where it is just 'beam' and searches for BT and IR devices at the same time?
The latter
6. Is it reliable as a phone
No problems in this area at all for me
I get about 1 to 1.5 days usage. This is my typical usage:
- 2.5 hours of ebooks, and PIM (I use a lowish setting for the backlight)
- 20 minutes of surfing on 3G/GPRS
- 10 minutes of email
- 10/15 minutes of calls
No real use of WiFi at the moment.
After the above usage my battery is usually around 28%. If I don't do too much ebook reading my battery is usually around 45% by the end of the day. I will be buying a spare battery as I am conservative in my use of the JJ as I am worried I wont have enough juice for the whole day.
No problems with dead pixles. H/w has been reliable.
Cheers guys. I hiope to get one soon.

I upgraded my phone and I am selling my unlocked Wizard loaded with Faria's Crossbow Mobile 6. It was originally with Tmobile USA. It comes with a 1GB microSD memory card, original battery, extended battery (2 times the charge), case, USB connect cable, wall charging unit, and Holux GPSlim 236 GPS. All for $275.00.
Phone works very well, especially with the extended battery which I charge every 2 days. Condition of the phone is good with minor nicks and the screen in very good condition.
Email me if you are interested at [email protected]
Shipping is $20.00 in US.
Thanks,
Mike

I have large 17" laptop with unused second hdd caddy (= i don't have second hdd in my laptop). As I work in various offices during year as contractor physical security of my laptop concerns me quite a lot. I often leave my laptop in the offices overnight. I am using kensington lock and all data are encrypted but let's move it to another level. Free space in second hdd caddy (http://www.ebay.com/bhp/2nd-hdd-caddy) could be used for installation of GPS/GSM tracking device
When is laptop locked e.g. in the office cabinet or on the table g-sensor could detect that someone took my laptop - then gps could be activated and each few minutes gprs could send me location of my laptop. First idea I had was to combine Arduino modules together but now I think I need just some c heap Android smartphone with g-sensor + gps. Smartphone battery could be easily charged (every working day ~ 8 hours) through SATA power connector as there are very similar voltage levels as in USB. I could even add extra batteries to have smartphone active for longer time - so even after one week holiday device would work fine. I could enable/disable this tracking device e.g. over bluetooth or simply setup schedule when to (de)activate smartphone tracking app. Smartphones are also pretty small so I would fit with extra batteries inside of hdd caddy - Arduino or any other custom hw would propably take more space. I have to test how good is GPS signal "inside of my laptop".
I need your advice now - which type of Android smartphone I should use for this purpose ? I need total control of g-sensor + gps + gprs + bluetooth - I don't mind to root phone to get everything I need. Preferably phone should be small and not with built in battery.
