Adding programs to today screen? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

I have disabled O2 active on my XDA Exec & want to know how to add programs to today screen.
Regards
Colin Bate

This is a link to the site about using the Today API to create your own desktop items:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnppcgen/html/ppc_yapi.asp
Hope this helps,
Graham.

Thanks GBird but im not a programer.
Regards
Colin Bate

In that case, all you can do is add or remove items from the Today screen by going into Settings - Today, selecting the Items tab and choosing which items you wish to see and in which order.
Graham.

The owner's manual might give you a better description than we can, Colin, but you choose which items display on the Today screen by going to:
Start > Settings > Personal > Today > Items
Put ticks next to the items that you want to display.

Hey mate,
Try this application. It is called launcher and you can easily add icons so any programs wanted are available from the today screen (when I say easily, even I can do it....). I have word, excel, pocket tv, calculator etc etc all readily available.
Any questions don't hesitate to ask.
HPJ

Thans HPJ I have downloaded launcher & will give it a try later as im at work now.

colinbate - if you're interested in launching items from the today screen, I heartily recommend cLaunch http://home.pacific.net.sg/~welic/claunch.html
I'm not sure if it works with the universal, but it's very nice and customisable: this is my (old) Magician setup:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Using claunch at the bottom with my vjsms and vjdialer tools to have quick dials (not fully WM5 compatible I understand, but for illustration purposes only). This is using the left up/down arrows to switch between 3 "banks" of launchable items as required (I have Bank 1=Quick dials, Bank 2 = Launch Calendar etc, Bank 3 = Phone Profiles and Volume control etc)
V

Thanks for that tip Vijay i will give that a try.
I found SPBPocketPlus Which does what i want but this slows the exec almost as much as O2 Active.
Regards
Colin Bate

Colin, there are variations on claunch depending on compatibility.
cLaunch is my favourite, but if necessary, check out tdlaunch (precursor to claunch). Launcher also works. Can you please post if there are problems with claunch on WM5 - I'm in touch with the author and he'd probably be interested to know.
V

I will try cLauncher but not till to tonight will report back tomorrow
Regards
Colin bate

I installed cLauncher last night seems that it will do what i want.
I didnt have much time to play with it.
Problems i have found are on the setup screen the buttons disapear off the bottom of the screen in landscape mode on other screens i have a scroll bar to scroll down but not on main setup screen & there is no keyboard icon in the middle of the bottom tool bar so i cant type anything in in portrait mode.
Regards
Colin Bate

colinbate - it's from pre VGA/landscape days; I think on the Brighthand forums there might be some discussions of a VGA version of tdLaunch, but that might be too much of a backwards step if claunch does most of what you want.
To get around the keyboard icon issue, temporarily, you can try using my program SIPSwitch on the development board. That will allow you to assign any hardware key to bringing up the SIP (input panel) without using an icon. I don't know if it's WM5 compatible, but no reason it shouldn't be, I hope.
V

I will give your SIPswitch program a try.
Where do i find the builtin progams I.E. Exel & word I can't seem to find them to add to cLaunch.
Regards
Colin Bate

They're normally in the \windows\ directory as both a .exe and a .lnk file.
V

The reason i could not find them is they are called pword & pxl.

Question about placing pocketmax on today screen

I asked this before also but got no reply. I am asking again. How can I place the pocketmax bar at the end of the today screen like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

Hi-
This program name is WisBar Advance Desktop you can find it from www.lakeridgesoftware.com when you install it you can see setup like enable/disable bottom bar, if you disable bottom bar you get more space on the screen and you can organize your today plug-ins.
Lakeridgesoftware has very useful forum for Advance Desktop therefore you can get more info from them
Rothstein - by pocketmax you mean PhoneAlarm?
In this picture it looks like the user is using Wisbar Desktop advance, which allows you to place Today screen plugins anywhere on the screen.
Other software that will let you do this is eXPerience and PPX.
If you're not using 3rd party software, going to your today screen settings will allow you to change the order of the plugins, so "move down" phonealarm until it's the last active plugin and it will be at the bottom of the screen.
To get a screen similar to this, try my TodayToggle software to hide the bar at the bottom of the screen, and position phonealarm at the bottom.
I've also written a piece of software that will keep it in the same position, ie fill the gaps between today plugin items, but it's not released yet so for now use ScaryBear's today spacer plugin to keep it aligned at the bottom of the screen.
Hope that helps!
Vijay
Yes I mean PhoneAlarm. And I am using Wisbar Desktop Advance. But I just can not find that option.
Can someone tell me where that option is at W.Adv. Desktop??
Hi,
You are going to lagh when i tell you how :shock:
Just hold down the stick (on the desktop) untill a menu popsup.
Now you can choose with or without Todaybar :wink:
Well no. I already laughed to myself as I was thinking that Wisbar Advance 2 and Wisbar Advanced Desktop were the same softwares. lol .. Sorry about that.
Dear Friends,
I've downloaded WisBar Advance Desktop, but i am seriously facing problems with the setup of this software (This is the first time i face such problems).
I feel Lost with this software, i cant set it up, i dont know from where to start?
Should i have Wisbar Advance 2 as well, to let the Wisbar advance desktop Work preperly?
Is their any Written guide for these softwares? so as to be read carfully and followed?
Thanks for yous support.

Hello Rothstein,
I made the screen. Vijay555 is right - I used WAD and put in PhoneAlarm as TodayPlugin. You can set the vertical position, so I just pushed it to the bottom of screen and "pinned" it to have it available on all vitual desktops.
Cheers

Hi!
I try to give you some advice on WAD:
1. There is no manual - it is just experimental SW in beta stage
2. Yes, you definitively need WA2 for operating WAD
3. Go to Lakeridge Homepage for further advice - they have a discussion forum for WAD: http://www.lakeridgesoftware.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=12&sid=ec8b5d222af079848918fa369be31d03
4. WAD installs itself as plugin into WA2 (if WA2 is installed before). After that you find all options for configuration when tapping and hold anywhere on the virtual desktop.
I hope this helps!

Tidying up Today Screen On MDA Pro

Hi,
I recently picked up an MDA Pro and am pretty happy with it, but there are a couple of things on the Today screen that I'd like to get rid of and can't find out how.
The bottom of the screen has a bar for the softkeys (currently says 'Messages' and 'Calendar') that's a waste of space, and likewise just above that there is a toolbar with battery status/wireless manager/screen rotate that I'd like to ditch. Any ideas how to do this?
Separately, are there any today plugins that give you the ability to crush down the # of messages and tasks to a single line rather than the current individual items?
Cheers,
Jim.
I don't use WM2005, however, have a look for my program, TodayToggle (which is not entirely WM2005 compatible: it doesn't hide the softbutton menu bar; I've purposely NOT tried to hide it because it's there for a reason. Would it be useful to hide it? When I get WM2005 I'll think about it).
For better control of task and alarms etc, look into alarmtoday by pocketmax. 3rd plugin down here:

vijay, u have some AWESOME looking features going on there. Please can you tell us what you're using for:
- What is giving you all the icons in the top bar?
- Which app are you using for the calendar summary?
- What is the second-last plugin and what does it do?
craigiecraigie4 - have a look at the second post here for some shots of my setup http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=26468
The bar at the top is just PhoneAlarm using a skin I made, and using a hack I made called ToggleToday. Both are described in detail here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=27331
Toggletoday will minimise the Startbar to a tiny 2 pixel high bar, and then allow your today screen to show through. So you get phonealarm on every page. It should work in QVGA on the Universal, although I'll be sorting out VGA and full WM2005 support when I get a WM2005 device (shortly I hope).
The second to last plugin is claunch set up with shortcuts to dial or sms my better half - they use tools I wrote called VJSMS and VJDialer, both available in the development forum; http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=26972.
I use a dual sim, so claunch is also set to allow me to switch sims (not visible on screen) - the plugin after phonealarm is a plugin i wrote to show my current operator, o2 UK and Orange UK.
The calendar summary is using AlarmToday by Pocketmax (phonealarm guy) but hacked a little to suit my theme better.
V
PS - this is my old screen! I've improved one or two things since, will try to post some new pics soonish.
Hmm... not quite what I was after. Here's a screenshot of my today page with the things that I don't like about it:
Items that I'd like to fix:
1 - combine these into a single line item
2 - get rid of the softbar (using a softkey for messages is a waste as there's already a hardkey for this and the calendar is already on the today screen)
3 - get rid of this line of icons (again duplicated information/functionality)
I tried your software but it doesn't seem to work with the MDA Pro: the screen ends up somewhat distored with the messages part of the today screen showing through to other apps and the right-hand 20% or so of the screen no longer updating - suspect a WM2005 prob somewhere.
Any other ideas?
Okay so not a perfect fix but I've found out how to change the softkeys on the Today screen and posted the details at http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=140027

START MENU HACK IS IT POSSIBLE

Ok,
I am not sure if any of you have switched your devices from Portrait to Landscape recently, but give it a try and you will see how the Recent Programs are displayed in Portrait we all know they go under the user defined icons in the start menu, but in Landscape they are all listed at the top alot neater than making your start menu list go across the screen. I searched the registry yesterday trying to see if any values changed with no luck. So can one of you guys like Buzz or Mamiach or someone take a look into it???
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
I'm also desperately keen for a hack to fix this - it's very messy having the long list, and quite disorientating.
I put the whole registry into word and spent a fair bit of time seqarching for something that could have looked like a meaningful key - nada. It's probably hard coded
craigiecraigie4 - this is likely to be coded into the menu routine - when the list would create a menu > screen height, it reverts to the cuter menu.
I can't think of any way to hack into this without hacking the underlying routines. I doubt this is in the registry, but calculated dynamically.
Why not use smallmenu? it's better...
V
the ipaq 4155 I had used to do this stright out of the box, even without switching to Landscape.. that was windows Mobile 2003 (not SE).
It seems 2003 kept the most recently opened progs on the top hirizontally. 2003SE does this in the center of the start menu instead.
2003SE (on AximX50v)

2003 (not SE on ipaq4155)
http://65.185.35.123/dp_miyu_2_a.jpg
I'll see what i can dig up.

Correction - it's MUCH better...
I am using WA with WAD, but I really like to limit my programs to necessity rather than GUI. I don't want to install to many programs on my PDA2K I like to keep it clean
alfredtv - if you're using wisbar, why do you need the startmenu at all?
SmallMenu is a fair alternative to wisbar if you only need what it offers.
I think the startmenu is near useless, and loathe it being there even when I don't need it. That's what prompted me to make my ToggleToday hacks
With SmallMenu correctly configured you shouldn't need the startmenu at all.
(note settings submenu, favorites submenu, special tools, custom icons on subfolders etc)
I took it to an extreme and made a toggle-able StartMenu, ToggleToday and new bar all in one:
However I've had a thought about a possible way to achieve the "mini-start menu". I might play around with an idea. No promises though, lots of other things to do.
V
I have read about your hacks on the other forums, and was thinking about trying them out.
Do they work with WM5 now??
I am using WA because their is no way to change the recent programs to a different location/remove them all together. I would not use them if there was a way to do this.
As I said before I prefer to not use additional programs, but at this point have no chioce. In WM5 M$ should really have thought about adding cascading menus to the Start button, that would have been great.
alfredtv - I haven't checked my hacks properly on WM5. The hiding the start bar bit does work for ToggleToday on WM5. It won't however hide the tray from the Today screen yet, because I don't have a WM5 device to test on.
If you're only using Wisbar as a startmenu replacement, give smallmenu a go. There is a free version. I've never had any problems with it.

Removing soft menu buttons in WM5?

Anyone knows how to remove the bottom soft menu buttons (messages/calendar bar) at the bottom?
:roll:
Greetz
DvL
Are you talking about the soft menu buttons (the menu bar right at the bottom of the screen?).
V
..
aha that is what it called? :shock:
yes i mean the soft menu thingy ;o) it is covering some of my fine vga theme art LOL
:twisted:
hmmm
Anyone?
Have you tried WisBar Advanced with WisBar Desktop???
It is a great set of programs that gives you the ability to hide the soft buttons
www.lakeridgesoftware.com
ehh
YEAH YOU ARE RIGHT LOL
but that slows down the Universal sooo much, i actually got my idea from WAD (wisbar advanced desktop).
I would like just a hack or so! then it would show my theme perfectly in landscape mode too..
Love the speed of my Universal now! only got pocketbreeze 5 installed! perfect.
So? any code hackers here? or .cab makers (soft menu buttons off and soft menu buttons on cab)??
dvl, this is discussed elsewhere on the forum. I believe that Wisbar desktop advance allows you to hide the soft buttons in Wisbar, but these menus bars are made per application.
I've made an app to hide the bars on the Today screen but it only works on WM2003 yet, NOT wm5. In fact I believe that it does hide the bars in WM5, but it doesn't allow you to use the space (yet). This is how it looks on WM2003se:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
That's discussed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=27331&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=
This is NOT wm5 yet, but as soon as I get a new copy of visual studio 2005 I'll fix it. It WILL work, just have to wait a while :wink:
If you want to generally hide the bars, I've made a program to do it, but you have to replace the bars with something: you'll just end up with a bit of empty space there otherwise. I've made a program to do that too,
but that's not generally available yet. eg full screen calendar hack.
Oh, and fullscreen terminal services:
V
hmm
i actually look for a way in hiding it like wibar advanced desktop does it, removing it and showing what is behind it (wallpaper).
just replacing it with another image is not what i actually am looking for.
I am sure a lot of people know exactly what i mean ;o) something like wisba advanced desktop without having to use that resource hogging program self LOL
:twisted:
Eh? That's what all my programs do (on wm2003se anyway!)
V
ehh
ok email it to me lol. lets see if it works on wm5 LOL
dvl: the link is already posted above. As I said, it doesn't work on WM5, or at least not properly, so I don't recommend it right now, although hopefully in a week or so I'll have the new VS 2005 and can finish the damn thing off. For now it will remove the soft menu buttons, but NOT fill the space up (on WM2003 it expands your today screen, which is why that thread is called "16% bigger today screen" or something...)
Follow that thread and try it, but as I said, it doesn't work as designed yet. You might ask why I'm mentioning it then: because no one else has come up with a solution to remove the bars, and I'm just highlighting that it can be done, by anyone. My own version will be here soonish.
V
VJ! FULL SCREEN TERMINAL SERVICES!!!! This is just too bloody awesome for words...I stopped following that thread when I figured no-one was gonna solve it. I'm off to contribute GBP10 to your WM5 fund right now - please keep my real name out of any messages.
Hangin in there for JasJar compliant:
- VJDialer (works on other wm5 devices I hear, not the JJ tho)
- ToggleStart (tho not sure it'll be any use until PhoneAlarm works on WM5 AND VGA <- I'm correct in believeing there are no VGA skins, hey?)
- This full screen TS capability!!
For others who want to see VJ working on his apps, use this paypal link to contribute to his VS2005 and WM5 device costs:
https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webs...ency_code=GBP&bn=PP-DonationsBF&charset=UTF-8
craigiecraigie4 - wow, thanks man! I'm getting to my WM5 device slowly, although your donation even distracted my better half from her CSI this evening!
I did the fullscreen terminal services mainly as a response to your pleading, thought you'd already seen it! Have you posted in the other thread?
Hopefully, as soon as I get a copy of Visual Studio 2005, I'll get it sorted out in beta.
Thanks again!

Today CommManager (skin BatteryStatus)

Hi,
Here's the last skin I made for BatteryStatus.
It's designed to be only a "Today CommManager", like Effcomm, but more graphical.

I also put the "older" version :
WirelessSwitch
Same features, same install, different look.
Tested on a Kaiser with stock ROM.
Enjoy
cool , super ton idée ton skin ..
it beautifull, great idée ;D
Very nice, looks great and works well. Great for people like me who are too lazy to open the real comm manager.
Cool, thanks!
just a question : what is the calendar plugin you use on the today in the DiamondWSwitch picture ?
I try to find something that will just display enough calendar info without scrolling bar on the right.
thanks
Bug feedback
Hi,
I'm using the Wireless Today Switch, which I think is fantastic, so thank you for the effort that went into making it. I have disabled the background by removing the line in the xml and the background png. I think it is line three. Anyway, one think I have noticed is that when you press and hold the phone button, whether the phone is on or not, the bottom option in the context menu is always "Turn off phone". The functionality works, i.e. it does switch the phone on when it's off, but the text is wrong. I'll have a look at it later myself but do you know an easy solution to this? I'll post the no background edit with a screen shot later today.
Cheers,

iPhone Theme/No WiFi (Perfect for HTC Touch)
Sorry for resurrecting such an old thread, but this seemed as appropriate a place as any to post this.
Though skinning and such is not my usual forte, I put enough work into this that it's only fair to share. This app was exactly what I was looking for when I decided I wanted a bluetooth on/off switch on my today screen... but, I really wanted it to match my iPhone icons. The result is attached. I've eliminated the wifi toggle since my HTC Touch has no wifi.
