It looks like stupid T-mobile has deleted the MSMessenger from their ROM version for MDA Pro.
Instead they put liks for their own dumb sites all over the place.
Does anyone know how to get the messenger back?
T-Mobile are soo gay
There are 3 ways:
1) Flash your rom with jasjar (you get Skype, antivirus, Pocket MSN and freed memory). I had done this myself, it's easy to do but it will break the device's warranty
2) Buy, yes I repeat, BUY the pocket MSN from microsoft for US$20. I think the reason behind the dissappearance of Pocket MSN is due to the extra charge imposed by Microsoft for the inclusion of this program.
3) You can try some other Messenger like Agile Messenger. It includes the MSN, Yahoo, AOL and ICQ in one app and for the cost of €19.95 (a bit more expensive)

Thank you, dianna_wills.
I really think we shoul sue ****in T-Mobile for this.
If I buy a device with WM5 on it, and WM5 includes MSMessenger (according to Microsofts website), I can expect to get the device with MS Messenger without having to pay extra.
At least I can`t remember having seen any warning about this in their advertising.
Also I don`t think it`s funny that I can`t remove their homepage (after every reset it`s back).
All this can`t be legal.
Any lawyers in here?
AGILE Messenger is free whilst it's in Beta, when Agile have a release version the Beta versions will probabaly cease to work and the software will be USD 20 outright or 2USD PM charged via text message.

And it uses much less data (like it uses 10% of what MSN uses to do the same job) and so with your web 'n' walk tariff it makes absolute sense to use it. Even when it goes commercial, I will recoup the cost of agile within a month or two compared to if I used gazillions of megs with MSN proper.

Is video conferencing possible using any messenger programmes
The kids use msn messenger and their web cams.
Will the universal do this either on a wirless network and/or over the 3g network.
Is there any way to get the pocket messenger to support video conferencing/web cam
Thanks

I've moved to agile messenger, and it's definitely not available there, but if they update it to allow webcamming over msn or whatever via wifi or 3G, that would truly be a killer app.

Hello!
I would greatly appreciate it if you could suggest any good multi - IM software for the universal (Yahoo, MSN, ICQ mainly)
agile messenger was good, but it has a lot of stability issues on the universal. So could you suggest something other than agile?
Thanks,
San
Hmm I'd be interested also in what people are using, at the moment I only have PocketMSN installed.
MSN via IRC
Hi all,
Well I own an MDA Pro (HTC Universal) so it doesn't come with MSN Messenger installed. I am waiting for the new Rom though which does include it. In the meantime I'm using an IRC client in combination with Bitlbee to get on the MSN network. It works like a charm. If you don't know what Bitlbee is you can go here (www.bitlbee.org) to read all about it and to try it out. Basically it's just a IRC Bot/Script that you can run on your computer and it forms a gateway to different IM networks like MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, AIM etc... You can also use the public servers if you don't want to install it on your own pc. Ow and it's free also.
Agile Messenger for Windows Mobile is still free as far as I know, and supports MSN, Yahoo!, AOL, Jabber and ICQ.
I'm using it almost daily. Works quite well, actually.
It has crashed on me at times, but only after extensive chatting.
Omnichaos: Does the MDA Pro not come with MSN? The i-mates do, and it's a free download from Microsoft's site too. The problem with using IRC scripts and bots is that not one bit of it is encrypted, so you're opening up your data to some script-kiddie with lots of time on his hands (granted, I haven't read about your solution, so I don't know the details)
Even I use Agile messenger..it works fine also in Full VGA Mode
What about any alternatives for just an MSN? I'm not using any other communicators so don't need the all-in-one ones.
I'm quite happy with Pocket MSN, it's just annoying me that the chat window is so small and hard to read and there is a huge unused space underneath.

Also my Agile crashes now and then my Jasjar. Indeed you need extensive chatting first. It has never crashed just in stand bye mode.
Agile however recovers very well after being out of reach of the network, which, in my case, cannot be said about MSN.
And the MSN new-user-on-line warning can officially not be switched off. Very irritating.
Anyone tried IM+?
Huib
hey, Thanks!!!
@ snorbaard
No the MDA Pro does not come with MSN Messenger at least not yet (It's included in the next Rom update). I don't know why they haven't included it in the first place cause I now that the Imate's, O2's & Qtek's do.
You are right about MSN being a free download but you have to active your MSN account first for you to be able to use Pocket MSN and that costs 15 euro's.
But as I said it doesn't matter for me that much cause I'm using IRC to get on the MSN network.
You're probably right about IRC not being encrypted but you can run it on your own computer which does increase security alot than if you were to use the public servers. Besides I don't really care that much. It's not like I'm giving away passwords or creditcard numbers on MSN anyway.

The new version should support:
Push To Talk
Image Transfer
Emoticons
Group Management
Typing Notification
Support for AOL, MSN, ICQ, Yahoo, and Google Talk
Amongst a number of other new features, and an entirely new interface.
There have ben a number of internal builds over the past few months, and we expect to be releasing a Beta very shortly.
For those of you that are requesting early Beta's it is simply not possible as we intend to provide it to the entire community as soon as our internal devlopment team and quality controll is satisfied that it is ready for public release; which we expect to be in the next few weeks.

I also use IM+. I have since i first got my old Nokia 7650 many moons ago.
I use an XDA EXEC at the moment and the built in MSN Messenger is really bad it claims i am connected when i am not and my gprs monitor reported over 400k usage in around 3 hours without any use.
With IM+ i use around 23K when connecting then a very small amount each time i chat.
AFAIK IM+ also connects directly to the services. I know some other third party ones connect through their own servers.

Dingo, that is good news. There is competition. I would love you to compare both Agile and IM+ as soon as the new, rewritten, Agile appears.
I use Agile at the moment. Apart from sometimes hanging my Jasjar, it does the job well. Especially REconnecting after being in the subway is very imporant for me. MSN just does not and Agile reconnects quickly.
MB consumtion of MSN is unacceptable. Very strange that MS delievered a product like that.

Hi guys
I have been using agile oin my T;mobile exec. It is very stable and i also find it recovers well on disconnects between cell sites. I regularly use it on express train journeys in the uk. But for these i tend to turn of UMTS and force gsm only. this really helps on speeding up agile reconnecting when the unoiversal is moving fast. The other big thing on agile is it costs less than 305 of the bw that MS MSN client uses. So on samll bundles it will save far more in bw costs than any licence feee will cost. If you are having problems on the t-mobile exec, then you are probably doing something wrong, or you have some other trird party sw installed that is messing thinbgs up. Personally i am really pleased that tmob did not install msn otherwise i would not have discovered agile. Can t wait till the new version comes out.
Keepup the good work at the Agile dev team.
Regards
Charlie
MSN Mobile is ... really bad IMHO.
Im also using IM+ as its the most stable for me. It also support jabber but it really miss some basic features.
Are they any other good jabber clients?
Agile was also not really working out for me, lets see how it behave on an new version.
If anybody know any other clients plz post them. Im also really ready to pay for them - 100EURO for a really ok client is no problem. Sources would be even better so i could fix the rest myself.
If somebody could provide sources, i would even sign an NDA or something and pay more.
Would love if somebody contact me
Daniel
Anyone got the same problem ? I still use the old MSN Messenger of WM2003 SE, original one from the Magician.
It does not work anymore.
I tried MSN 4.7.3 in my PC and it does not work either. I upgraded to the latest release and it works !
I think Microsoft is now blocking the old MSN messenger
Any ideas?
It still works for me, then maybe it was just a short interruption of service.
Strange, it still does not work for me. It happened about 5 hours ago and still does not work until now.
Internet connection is working fine, I use GPRS. Browsing is fine.
Like I said, I have this problem also in the PC. But when I updated the MSN Messenger to the latest release (Windows Live Messenger), it is working fine.
However, I dont know how to update my Magician MSN Messenger
yeah it doesnt work sometimes, i dont use it alot.
if you wana use messenger get agile or IM+ they support multiple messengers
Is Agile freeware ? This is confusing because in some forums people put it as freeware. But when I check the website, I have to pay about $19 USD.
I tried it once (I think I got it bundled with T-Mobile NL), and I dont like it because of intermittent hung up.
Maybe there is a newer version, I dont know.
What is your experience with Agile ?
I hate Agile for the only reason that when a suggestive input text has been selected, it sends the message which may rather be incomplete.. It should be freely available though.
I like agile - think its a really good wee programme, never had a problem with predictive - but I have it turned off.
It is free if you get the ppc version - some mobile versions are charged but I downloaded and used the ppc one and not a penny was paid.
However I did pay for a years service on my 6600 then 2 months in got the hermes so I guess my lack of use of my paid version more than makes up for getting the hermes version for free.
yeah it says its paid for but when you install it it doesnt say trial only or anything
I like Agile, never had any problems. It's a really good program and best of all... it's totally free.

Have you installed or recently updated a firewall/antivirus application like Norton software? This could be the problem with the PC version as I've found that sometimes updates block files such as the exe file for MSN; this could explain why the old messenger didn't work and the new one does, as the exe files are different. No idea with the ppc tho :/

In my opinion none of them is worth the money! In fact IM services should be free just like they used to be!
Agile Messenger is a beautiful IM client and supports all standard IM (AOL, ICQ, MSN, YAHOO and more) but the price on the software is a joke! Well, as long as they find people spending that ammount of money they won't go down with the price anyway!
IM+ never worked on my NOKIAs and also not on my XDA!
I can see who is online, I can send them an IM but never receive what they are typing in ... ! The interface is not as comfortable and handy as the Agile Messengers, looks somehow way behind ...

Yeah I think its insane that they want money for the programs wish AOL would come out with a good I'M client for wm5/wm6
IM+ works on T-MobileWeb... i tried......
I use VeriChat.. its a good client and is pretty fast. The basic is free and you can set a bunch of away messages to pick from.. it also supports a variety of things.. but sadly they don't sell it anymore.. i attached the EXE though in case you want to try it

LOL,
maybe it is about time that we sit together and develop a XDA Messenger!

sounds good to me!

The bad thing is: if you use almost any of the Messengers, like I do, it is quite complicate if you do not have an application such as AGILE ... I would buy it for US$20.00 if that would include a life time subscription, but not for more ... Also: for YAHOO is not really a messenger out there (except the one integrated in the TMO US ROMs, and that one really sucks!!!).
I just 'scammed' the web to see if anybody out there works on a open source project for messengers on PDA's but could not find any good stuff ... either it is so old that it is not worth to try to bring it back to life or it is not open source ... sad!
Well with the growing popularity of the Windows Mobile platform, thanks to increasing sales of it via phones, I think you will begin to see a greater proliferation of software like this for the platform.
Now, that said, I would welcome an XDA Messenger if someone should choose to write one and I would gladly help to beta test it. There's just no way I'm paying a monthly subscription fee for IM software on top of what I pay for my phone and data.
Otherwise it looks like it's separate apps. Windows Live, that older free version of AIM from the UK and the new version of Yahoo! Mobile should be out soon for WM devices.
XDA Messenger would be sweet! Does anyone know if Jabber is based on SMS? There's a free ap at http://www.movsoftware.com/products/imov/imov.htm, but it's no good to me if it uses SMS. I have unlimited data, but pay for each text message
i kno that Jabber is available in IM+ and the whole program uses data. I personally dont use Jabber, but I assume its the same for all services.
i love the idea.. of making a program so that we could all use it.. i would help but i have no clue how to make a program.. but if u guys get around to making it.. itd be kewl if u guys included personalized away messgaes so we could out it in and so that it appears online like on a computer. not i'm mobile like when u sign on froma fone... well this are just suggestions if u guys do end up making one thatd be great..
I used QuickIM for MSN until I installed WM6 with Live messenger. It has no subscription, available for all mobile platforms *except* WM, but there is a rudimentary jar version which is what I used.

considering pdaphones/smartphones are more popular these days alot people would find that a good free messenger-program would be nice to have. sadly i don't have any programming skills but would definitely be among the list of beta testers for windows mobile 2003 and windows mobile 5/6.

Forgive my idiocy, but was Agile at some point "free"? And when did it become not free?
agile was free for ages, they called it a trial but it never expired.
noticed it wasnt about 6 months ago or so i guess they decided to start trying to charge people for it.
also try http://www.ebuddy.com/ which is a web based messenger app allows MSN and yahoo on most wap enabled mobiles.
i still prefer IM+ but thats not free.

EQO Mobile. It's a messaging app that lets you connect with aim, msn, gmail, and I think yahoo. It's free, and it looks pretty nice. Again, it's called "EQO"
I've been using palringo and it plugs into 6 IMs, including msn, yahoo, aim and google
nice interface too.
Also does voice and picture sending
IM+ is a good application as it has all the usual suspects including MSN, ICQ, Yahoo, etc etc, and it works on WM5, WM6 & WM6.1
Last time i checked palringo isn't freeware.

How Much Does Palringo Cost?
Palringo is free and will remain free for non commercial users.
Commercial users may be interested in the benefits of an Enterprise account. See here for more information.
Palringo connects through the internet so if you pay for data usage, such as on a mobile phone, check with your network operator for pricing information.

I loaded palringo, and it does seem very cool. I like it better than slick. And it has some features that look really cool. Like, groups with group chat and voice messaging. Now I just need to get some buddies to load it up on their windows mobile and blackberry phones so we can give it a good workout.

I know there was an old thread on here but I could not find it, so, forgive me to ask again:
What is the best Messenger application for WM5 / WM6?
I love the look and work of AGILE MESSENGER but the price is way too high for a program like this! Also: users get routed through their own servers to 'validate' the lisence. This causes time delay and additional data trafic each time you connect and in a long run you pay more than you would have to if you pay per data volume.
It would be great to find a program what does at least the main 4: AOL, ICQ, MSN, YAHOO. What do you guys use?
You could try Octrotalk.
