Access ROM when device won't boot??? - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

When the device won't boot, is it possible to connect and access the device's ROM through the PC?
For example, I enabled KITL in "USB" and "Active" mode, then I put the device in the cradle, the PC recognized it as "HTC USB SYNC" and then ActiveSync started but after about a minute gave and error saying it was unable to connect saying the device isn't a SmartPhone or PocketPC.
Is there some sort of MSDN developer software or something I need to connect through the USB in KITL mode since ActiveSync won't do it?
Any ideas????
Thanks!

flash it with a rom

Maybe I should have been more clear.
I already have a ROM flashed onto the device, however the ROM will not boot. Using the KITL layer through the USB, I would like to access the ROM so that I can change some files in it, a few dll's and a bin file in the Windows directory to be specific. I am presuming there is an application I need to install on my PC to acomplish this in conjunction with the KITL mode, however I am currently at a loss for knowing what that application is.
FYI, this is a WM5 so yes it does have the newer KITL version that in fact supports USB sync for debugging according to MS and the KITL menu on my device. However I've read everything on MSDN and googled and have turned up nothing as far as what app I need.
Does anybody know?
Thanks!

usb only mode?

Is there a mode the wizard can go into (outside of the wm5 os or wm6) to allow usb access? The bootloader seems perfect but I cannot get direct usb access to edit files that are normally in use when windows is running, is there a such mode the wizard can go into?

Stuck In Bootloader

Hello Everyone,
I have a HTC Hermes 200/Tytn which is stuck in Bootloader.
I have seen that there are utilities called mtty & uni_exitbootloader, but I cannot get them to see the device over usb. I have tried a Vista & an XP Desktop, both with USB disabled under WMDC & Activesync.
I am concerned that I've seen from other posts that when you plug your PDA in via usb, the PDA is supposed to display "USB" on the screen rather than serial (doesn't happen for me).
I have sucessfully been able to flash the PDA by copying the firmware to a MicroSD (Thought that might fix it).
Any ideas greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
J
On the pc untick "Allow USB Connection" in activesync settings, put the Hermes into bootloader then run MTTY... You should detect now unless you get a sync error, try unplugging any other USB devices....
Cheers...

problems w/ Telstra T8285 - no USB Syncing, no wifi

I just purchased a Telstra Touch HD T8285 on eBay. Unfortunately, the seller did not disclose that he had flashed a new ROM (Dutty ROM) to it and that USB syncing and wifi do not work. I'd like to try and get this fixed on my own...otherwise I will have to try and get the seller to take the phone back and refund my money. I really like the phone so I just want it to work properly.
After much searching on here I discovered that I could flash directly from the flash card, thus bypassing the problem of USB syncing not working. I have tried a few ROMs (EnergyRom, Miri, Telstra updated direct from HTC) and neither wifi nor USB syncing works with any of them.
I have tried all the hints/suggestions about changing USB settings in activesync on both the phone and computer and nothing works. I cannot even get my computer to recognize the phone as a USB storage device (the phone just starts charging but activesync acts as though it's not even connected). When I go into bootloader mode on the phone it displays "serial" but never changes to USB.
Bootloader screen displays the following:
BLAC120 32M
SPL-1.56.Olinex
MicroP-Blackstone (LED) v6
From what I've read on here, I think I need to get a new version of SPL on my phone but I don't know how to do so without being able to use USB syncing. Is there any way to reflash SPL on my phone using the card flash method?
Someone please help!

It sounds more like you need to update your usb drivers by following this guide. Also ensure that you have enabled 'allow usb connections' in activesync connection settings.
Unfortunately you cannot change SPL without using your usb, so let me know if this works
unfortunately that guide to updating USB drivers does not work. When my phone is in bootloader mode the bottom only says "Serial". It never changes to "USB" so the computer does not even recognize that a device is connected.

Did you check that 'allow usb connections' was turn on in activesync connections settings?
Also when you update usb drivers you need to turn your pc off then on again.
Yes I made sure of that setting in ActiveSync.
Since my computer does not recognize my phone being connected, the "Windows CE USB Devices" is not listed in the Windows Device Manger. I have tried connecting my phone to 3 different computers (Windows XP and Windows 7) using different USB cables and still get nothing.
The closest I got was one time yesterday when I plugged my phone into the a/c adapter to charge, the USB window popped up on my phone asking whether I wanted to connect to ActiveSync, Storage Card, or Internet Sharing. That is the only time the window has ever opened and it wasn't even plugged into a computer.

I've tried that as well.
Basically, if it's been written here on the forum I've tried it. Each thread I've found where someone has had the same problem seemed to fade off and no one reported back (even those that fixed it).
Possibly a hardware problem with your usb port then which would require a warranty return unless anyone else has any suggestions
EDIT
Try flashing original stock rom, i.e. the one which was on the device originally when bought. This rom will still flash even if bootloader says 'serial'. This is the only rom that this works for. Unfortunately in your case you do not know what this rom was so a bit of guess work will be required going by date and location. Stock roms are available in wiki here and it'll just be trial and error
Hi
Hello,
Unfortunately,I have the same problem With my HTC HD phone, I've tried every thing but i couldn't found a solution to my problem, in SPL stage the screen show me only Serial and hang on it ,and when i connect my phone to my PC not change to USB,
So please any one have a clue for this,
Thanks in advance.
Dear gmischenko,
Did you solve your problem??

Cannot Connect to PC AARGH!

Hi,
EDIT * I have found a solution in that I can connect via WI fi so that's pretty good but if anyone can help me with the USB issue, it would still be appreciated. It seems that the Wi Fi connection is more limited as I am unable to view things in explorer *
hoping to get some help using my USB to connect to my PC. I've installed Kies but when I try to connect to my PC it just keeps on trying to connect but never actually does it.
I have looked for guidance on this but keep coming across the instructions to go into 'about phone > USB settings' etc etc. However, I do not have a USB settings in about phone. In fact, there is nothing at all about USB in About Phone. I do have a 'USB Utilities' in Wireless and Networks but all that gives me the option to do is 'Connect Storage to PC'. I have a memory card in my phone.
When I do connect to the USB cable, with Kies open, when windows 'finds new hardware' it keeps saying a problem occurred during installation.
Please can anyone help me out? All I want to do is basically drag and drop some files from my PC to my phone. Thanks very much for your help.
Settings --> Applications -- Development --> USB debugging.
Thanks for that!
It got me a little further. I also unmounted then remounted the SD card. However, when I try to connect via kies I now get the message:
Reconnect the device in Samsung Kies (PC Studio) mode. Current connection mode not supported by Kies.
What am I doing wrong? Do I have to re click the USB settings on the phone before connecting to Kies now that it's installed the hardware on my PC?

Turn off USB-Debugging
Don't connect phone yet
Open Kies
Open the Tools menu -> Troubleshoot connection error
Go through the guide and let it reinstall the drivers.
Connect you phone, and let it connect
The default setting has the USB debugging tick greyed out. When I select it, it asks me if I want to allow debugging.
Do you mean that I shouldn't allow debugging and then connect (after reinstalling Kies) or should I allow it and connect? Sorry for my noobishness, Android is all completely new to me.
You should untick the USB-debugging - Then reinstall drivers NOT entire Kies
OK, it's unticked and I'm reinstalling the drivers via troubleshooting.
Do I need to unmount then remount the SD card before connecting my phone? Thanks for your help btw.
Shouldn't make a difference
Bah, I still have the same problem. It just says that there was a problem installing the hardware when I plugged in the phone.
After reinstalling the drivers, i shut down Kies then reopened it. I then plugged in the USB and then plugged the USB into my phone.
When I first installed Kies yesterday, Microsoft Active Sync kept on trying to activate and ask for a CD. It kept on holding up Kies. In the end I uninstalled Active Sync. Also, I still have Samsung PC Studio on my PC from when I had a Samsung a few years ago. It was one of those old slider phones, not a smart phone. Could that be part of the problem? I was hoping to keep it because it's proved to have the best media player I've ever had.
I just don't know what I'm doing wrong here.
Try without restarting Kies.
What part of the drivers aren't installed? (Check device manager)
In Device Manager, under Portable Devices there's something called Android MTP that has an exclamation mark next to it. It says it's not configured correctly and that 'No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device'. I'll reinstall the Kies drivers now.
Thanks for this help mljjlm
P.S. Now that I've unplugged the phone, the MTP thing isn't showing in the device manager list anymore.

Of course, it's a part of the phone, and it should not be plugged in because they would have to force a reboot when reinstalling drivers (which might sort your problem btw)
Reinstalled the Kies Drivers and then plugged in my phone but got the same problem. It says a problem occurred. Same device now has a problem in device manager. Maybe I should just uninstall everything and restart? Should I uninstall the old PC studio too?
Just try the reboot without uninstalling anything and then plug the phone in when your pc has booted
Argh! Still didn't work! I think there must be a problem with my PC, well, I'll try doing full uninstalls and reinstall it all. I have to go now as well so I'll have to try again tomorrow.
Thanks very much for your patience mljjlm. It has been greatly appreciated
Are you trying to just transfer files back and forth? If so... forget using Kies.
(I don't have a micro-USB cable with me currently, so this is all from memory)
Just remove the drivers from your device manager so it's like your machine has never seen your phone before. Then on your phone enable usb-debugging.
When you then plug in your phone, you should get a usb icon up top on your phone's display... pull the window-shade down and click on the USB connection button. You should get a fullscreen window on your phone that says something like USB Connection with the friendly android waiving.
Now your PC should see your phone as a standard USB mass storage device.
try plugging the usb cable in another usb port on your computer and than try again.

You're using Kies, that's what you're doing wrong. You said in your very first post you wanted to be able to drag and drop some files from your PC to your phone, so use USB debugging (say yes when it asks you) and Windows Explorer.
If you are using a custom rom like Checkrom Revolution you will need to install the kies support from kitchen pro.
Also are you using the cable that came with your phone?
I have found a few microUSB cables that will allow charge and wont allow data transfer like the new ones for nokia devices and some blackberrys.
It worked! The USB debugging thing!
Thanks to everyone who helped me out. The forum said I was limited to 5 thanks per day so if you didn't get one of the thanks I apologise. Thanks very much!

[Q] HTC HD2 USB doesn't detect with MAGLDR

Hello,
I recently purchased HTC HD2 from someone. It came to me with Android 2.2 froyo installed in it through NAND. Now when I am trying to put ICS replacing froyo or when I am trying to put WINMO 7.5 Mango along with android it doesn't detect USB device connection.
All other features are working perfectly like, phone charging through USB, USB detection for SD card etc.
USB doesn't detect only when I try to run through MAGLDR. For example: when I am switching ON my phone by pressing Voume down key along with power key, colourful screen appears with "SERIAL" written on it. Now when I connect phone to my PC through USB it doesn't change to "USB" from "SERIAL".
Also when I am switching ON my phone by continuously pressing power key to get into MAGLDR mode and trying to flash using the 5th option "USB Flasher Mode", here also I can see just "Wait USB…" rather as per the tutorials it should display "Wait USB…USB".
Now because of this issue I am unable to use my HD2 using WINMO or with any other android OS.
Please help with any option so as I can use the USB feature or to install different OS. My motiv behind purchasing this set was only the customization I can do with the phone. Now without which my motive is getting failed.. Please help me guys :crying: ..
Thanks,
Harjeet
What's your PC setup?
A few things,,
In wmdc untick allow USB connections,, the wmdc that comes with vista/win7 isn't the latest version, Google the Microsoft wmdc page and manually download+install, try not to use a 64 bit windows machine if you have the option, (winxp for preference), running an os through any virtual machine type setup can be problematic, try different USB ports, for magldr it needs the android drivers,,,they can be found in various ways, they're linked in the nand toolkit thread, or I think installing "myphoneexplorer " on the PC installs them too, or Google the android sdk (that's a long and complicated way to get them)
Thanks for replying..
First thing.. Do I need to install WMDC when I am not having windows OS itself in my phone? This is just a question because as per my knowledge I don't need to install WMDC unless I am using windows in my Mobile.
At present mobile is purely an android phone with android OS installed in NAND.
And yes I am having Windows XP 32 bit with me. I already tried with different data cables and in different USB slots but USB connection for installing new OS doesn't work. Other then this all other features of USB are working perfectly.
Please revert in case my opinion is wrong.
Thanks,
Harjeet

no its not, its a windows mobile phone with a hacked winmo bootloader allowing it to run a custom bootloader (magldr or clk) which enables android to run.
Anything you do in the winmo bootloader (stripey screen - hspl, task29/flashing magldr/flashing stock roms, flashing radios - ) all requires windows mobile usb drivers.
Anything you do from the magldr screen requires android usb drivers.
Hey Sam,
I can't believe it.. I was wrong.. Just installed Active Sync and tried again.. It worked..
You were right.. Thanks a ton champ..

Hello all.
When you've got some problems with you datacable via phone/pc is also this a solution.
Be sure you've make a copy of your SD-card and after when you copied SD to PC (harddisc) via datacable or cardreader and after this you gonna formatting your SD-card or you buy a new SD-card.
Then put new or formatted SD-card into your phone and started it up in bootloadermenu (colorscreened) <volume down> and after this you wil see now in place only "serial" changed into "USB".
I'll be hope that this wil working.
I've my HTC HD2 also working when i fixed this.
HTC HD2 / PACman Android version 4.1.2 (latest version) / Magldr 1.13 / CWM recovery 3.2.0.0 <this combine works very simple and als this Android rom is stable and fast without automatically rebooting time.
For more you've check <HTC HD2 Android roms>
I wish you good luck with your phone...
i have the same problem
I had the same problem on my Windows 7 x64. Then I tried to connect HD2 to my older Win XP notebook and there it worked. So I found somewhere, I should update drivers in my Windows 7 system. I downloaded file "drvupdate-amd64.exe" from Microsoft (search in Google for "Microsoft Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 Driver for Windows Vista (64-bit)"), installed it and then it started to work (it took a while, before it started to work, but it started). When I connected my HD2, Windows found the driver, installed it and "SERIAL" changed to "USB" finally.

I confess I haven't read all answers so it might be a repetition but what I think is you might have made changes in your operating system, specially in SYSTEM REGISTRY that deals with communicating your devices chipset in particular mode, I think it is a QUALCOMM device, now you should do following things:-
First if you have registry backup, apply that and revert back to previous system registry or in case you have not, restore your OS to any previous restore point.
Then restart system, connect USB cable and start it in the particular mode you asked in question (vol down+power), it should try detecting driver.
If it can't, better solution to try finding QUALCOMM MSM driver for HD2 separately is to download windows active sync/htc sync, which might be having these drivers built in, download it and if it doesn't help, restart your system, then try again, it should work, in case doesn't PM me, as I won't be following this post, most probably even you ain't
