Orange unveil SPV 2020
By: Anthony Newman, Thursday 6th November 2003, 10:53 GMT
The first Phone Edition device to come to Orange boasts Windows Mobile 2003, Bluetooth, a camera and more.
The Danish branch of European GSM provider Orange has today revealed the latest Microsoft-powered device in their range: the SPV 2020. The device is based on the same HTC Himalaya reference design as the XDA 2.
Meet Orange's SPV 2020
The phone offers tri-band 900/1800/1900 MHz GSM and GPRS, as well as Bluetooth and IR connectivity. The screen is a standard 16-bit transflective TFT display running at 240 x 320, and the package is driven by a 400 MHz Intel XScale processor with 64 MB of RAM. Expansion is in the form of an SDIO-capable SD/MMC slot. Finally, the new SPV includes a VGA digital camera.
The handheld runs Microsoft Windows Mobile Pocket PC 2003 Phone Edition, which has introduced native support for MMS and multiple always-on email accounts, as well as continuing support for POP3 and IMAP4 email, instant messaging, SMS and full web access through Pocket Internet Explorer.
The current SPV (sound, pictures, video) line marked the first commercially-available Windows-powered Smartphone, and currently includes the SPV E100 and the newly-announced SPV E200, which like the SPV 2020 features Bluetooth and an integrated camera. The E200 and 2020 are thus complementary devices.
The SPV 2020 is unlikely to be in the shops before Christmas, as only Danish pricing and availability has yet been announced. Orange have stated a 3,999 DKK price tag, excluding VAT,
Ok Mr G,
I am a man of few words, I said "orange uk to launch xda 2"
in your reply it very clearly says....
'The Danish branch of European GSM provider Orange has today revealed the latest Microsoft-powered device in their range: the SPV 2020'
now correcrt me if i am wrong (and i'm sure your would) but there is a significant difference there - especially if you live in the uk !!!!
so i believe my statement that "No one else seems to have mentioned it , so here is an article published the other day"
isnt too far off the mark
the phrase look before you leap comes to mind !!!!
ANY WAY, WELL DONE, IT SHOWS YOU WERE PAYING ATTENTION !!
i'm a bit gutted about this... since i just got an xdaII and switched from orange to get it i would have held out for an orange release had i known.
oh well... still happy with the xdaII... not the network
@Fais
I'm the same as you - I left Orange after 12 years, just to get the XDA2. While the machine itself is cool, O2 are arse. No customer service quality at all compared with Orange.
Still, I spoke to Orange several times before I switched and asked them about the situation. Nobody mentioned the impending release of the XDA2 on their network, so they lost my loyal custom. No matter. I'll be back to Orange when my o2 contract is up and I can get my XDA unlocked.
Please, Sublimatica, can you tell me about how many months of contract O2 in UK will give the unlock code ?? here in France, it's 6 months ...for all operators .
I think the orange XDA-II only has 32MB of internal ram. If thats the case I'm glad I got mine with O2.
orange are confusing people
first it were released as the spv2020 then it changed name to m1000
and their page dont seem to mention specs like cpu and mem at all
http://orange.dk/nyspv/omspv2020
would suppose they would not be much help if you had an issue with your phone and wanted to solve it over the phone rather then sending the whole unit to them

I haven't tried, tenzin, but I think that we have two options in the UK:
1. We wait until our one-year minimum contract is finished, or;
2. We pay all the remaining monthly contract price in one amount and get an unlock code early.
Either way, as long as the service provider (O2 or Orange) get a year's worth of montly contract from us, they don't mind unlocking the handset.

o2 XDA II or Orange SPV M1000

New to all this so please be gentle.
Have decided to buy an Xda II (or similar) on a contract here in the UK. Can not decide between O2 and Orange, prices are similar although there appear to be some good web deals on Orange.
What do folk recommend? I have heard that Orange's M1000 can not be unlocked or the firm wear updated. Is this true? Are there any other differences? Do you get two batteries and other goodies with Orange?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have an SPV-M1000 and unlocked it using the software found on this site, I have also upgraded the firmware from the orange website.
Cheers

go with orange
you do get 2 batterys and a screen protector and 24 hour repacement if it is lost or dammaged or stolen for only £5 a month.
i am on my 3rd unit as the rom upgrade failed twice and they have swapped it no questions asked.
orange customer services is also free so any problems dont cost you a penny in calls unlike o2
go with orange mate!
SPV M2000 released today on Orange
Bah,
I've just decided I can afford an SPV (£100 with a £30 contract). I knew there would likely be the new model out soon since the price has dropped so much. How much do you think you could get the new M2000 for with a new contract?
I've ordered my M1000 but have 2 weeks to return it if I don't want it
SPV M2000 released today on Orange???????

The SPV M2000 is due out in October/November 2004. The nice new feature is Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition. I don't think I would rate the Qwerty keyboard that much unless you have really small child-like fingers. I perhaps to use the stylus for text entry. Then again if I had one I would probably think different!

When is the O2 mini coming to the UK?

I keep getting told 'in a few weeks' but does anyone have any definate info on when it will arrive?
Thanks
H
Mmmmmm,
I didnt even think they would bother relasing it over here.
I know they are relasing the typhoon very soon
i waited and waited for the o2 xda mini. in the end got told they had no plans to release it in the uk!!! wtf i can't understand for the life of me how this makes finacial sense as i know that the magician has been hugely popular for the likes of tmobile and now orange with the m500.
so i gave up and got an orange contract and the spv m500, unlocked it and stuck my o2 sim back in it! maybe they will release the wizard in a few months instead - who knows?! o2 customer services are rubish and none of them had a clue!!!
Tom
why don't you just buy it from buy mobile phones.net? then you get the qtek with 2 years warranty? same phone, unlocked.
V

Where to get one ?

Im currently on O2 at the mo (XDA IIi) with about 6 months of my current contract left.
Anyway when the time comes to upgrade, i quite fancy a Wizard ....
BUT i cant seem to find the device listed for any company (Tmobile, Vodaphone, O2, Orange) am i missing something?
Will it be available when i need to upgrade ?
Sorry if this has been asked before, i couldnt see any threads that jumped out at me.
I believe that O2 will have it soon, branded as the Mini Exec..
Expansys
Expansys (UK) have them in on T-mobile (as a vario) for £23.95 on web and walk 100
http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=127413
A few mobile sites have them in Qtek/Imate guises or branded to O2, but stocks seem to be minimal if non-existant. I rang t-mobile yesterday and upgraded for £40 to web and walk 100 for 18 months and the Vario. Recieved this morning and v. happy with it. My MDA compact is now being replaced (though it will be missed).

Vario II Available?

So is the Vario II available then?
"The MDA Vario II is already available in Germany and the UK; Austria, the Netherlands, Hungary, and Slovakia will follow soon" from the link below and dated 15/8/2006!!
