Can I make the Universal power off when I close the screen? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

I've noticed that a few times I've snapped the screen shut on my Exec (rather like you would a laptop) and assumed that it had powered off.
When I opened it up a couple of hours later - it was quite obvious from the battery bar that the only the screen had been off, and that the device had remained on.
Is there any way to configure it to power off when the screen is closed.
I know this might not be the best thing to do in certain scenarios (e.g. playing mp3's in your pocket, or being on the phone), but I was just wondering if it is possible.
Anyone?

Don't think so, but go to Start > Settings > System > Power > Advanced
and you can make it turn off after a specified period of inactivity. Should do until someone comes up with a better idea?

Universal switches on when lid opened

On occasions, my Universal (O2 XDA Exec) will switch on when I open the lid, even though I have switched it off (by pressing the On/Off button) before closing the lid. At other times I have to press the On/Off button after opening the lid to switch it on.
Anybody know what dictates this behaviour?
there could be several reasons:
- while in your pocket (or wherever you keep the device), the power button is accidentally pressed.
- there is a program that you installed that powers on the device based on your settings (what programs do you have installed anyway?)
- there is a program that you ran that disables the auto power off in the system settings. programs which usually do this are navigational and movie playin programs. if not closed properly, they would cause the device to not turn off automatically.
hope that helps for starters.
also check the lock setting in the buttons settings for the lock function. with all the buttons on the sides it's easy to push one when handling the uni.
Is there any chance that you might be pressing the "light" button as you are opening the lid? its easy to do if you hold the base in one hand and open the lid with your other hand.
lid
I would actually love that feture, open lid...switched on/lights up....close the lid....switched off/screen goes off
Yeah! I also prefer to have this kind of feature. Open the shell then device turn on and close it and off.
Will be great. I drop my Exec once when I try to open it and then turn it on with one hand.
if you set time for screen to turn off to zero screen will always come on/off as you open it/shut it

Did I go to the wrong destination?

Problem with baclight going off...

Hi.
Got my TouchHD had it for awhile now, however i have recently noticed...
I have the setting Ticked for;
Turn off backlight if device is not used for - 30seconds.
Turn off device if not used for - 2minutes.
So, after waiting 30seconds the backlight will go out, should i touch the screen, remove the stylus.... the screen will stay dim unless 1 of 2 things are done:
Turn device off then back on OR;
Goto Settings > Power > Backlight > Then make a adjustment to the slider.
This is rather annoying now.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Yeah, it's either designed this way or its a bug.
I got very used to tapping the power button with this device. Its now a habit to control the back light. I hate iPhone comparisons, but I did this on the iPhone as a habit to save battery. Definitely, not the same issue on the HD with its amazing battery life.

Setting for turning off the screen while charging?

I can only find a setting for turning off the device which I don't want to do because sometimes I sync files and I don't want the phone to turn off in the middle. Surely there is a way to turn off the screen though? It bugs me that it is always on when the phone is charging.
Thanks!
Go to Menu > Settings > Power >
Then click the advanced tab along the bottom
and if you only want the backlight to turn off and keep the device powered while charging
On external power:
enable turn off backlight (and choose after how many minutes)
disable turn off device if not used
Isnt turning the device off turning the screen off? As in throwing the device into standby?
When my X1 is in standby (after pushing the power button), I can still access it from my computer...

Automatic key lock

Hello, everybody
When I press and hold down the "hang up" key, my phone goes in lock mode. That's great. But is there someway to get the phone to do this automaticly? For example after 30 sec or so. I've not found any solutions here in this forum.
I know there is some 3rd part program that can fix this, but I have read that there is some issues with these programs, so I really hope that I can manage to do this without any 3rd part programs.
I will be very happy if someone could help me with this issue
(I'm terribly sorry for my bad english)
Go to Start > Settings > tab Advanced.
There, just set the options you want. Basicly, when it turns off the display at the times you set, the phone also locks.
(actually, it only locks when the 2nd option is activated, which is something like "Turn off device when not used for...". It's not really turned Off, the Display just goes off, and the phone gets locked).

Thanks for quick answer.
Actually there is no tab Advanced when I go to Settings. I have three tabs in Settings, it's in norwegian, but I can try to transelate it to english: Personal - System - Connections. I can't find any of the options you mentioned in your post.
I also like to be more precise with my problem: My display turnes of after some sec, but that not the same as the key lock-function I want. When I press and hold my "hang up"- key I have to press "Unlock" in the down right corner and then I have to confirm it in the middle of the screen afterwards to unlock it. I want my phone to automatically lock after some time not only turn of the screen.
When I have my phone in the pocket I often accidentaly turn on the screen with the power button and the phone starts to call someone. That won't happen with the key lock activated.
Hmm, well, for me, when the Screen turns Off, it Auto-locks the phone. So what you want. This is with the Default HTC Rom.
I wrote the location wrong, it is:
Start > Settings > tab System > Energy > tab Advanced.
Edit 2: Ok, now I realised why this is working for me. I used HD Tweak to change something.
With what I did, I have *exactly* what you want: Device goes off after x seconds, and then locks.
1) I used HD Tweak (from this forum)
2) There go to: 4) Lock > 4.1 AutoLock
3) Turn that on.
4) Go back to this: Start > Settings > tab System > Energy > tab Advanced.
5) There turn OFF the 1st Option (which dims it to half screen brightness, but it's buggy with the option I mentioned at 2), HD Tweak Warns for it. So by turning off this option, you work around that bug)
6) Turn on the 2nd Option (Turn off Device after X time) (which actually means turn off Screen...)
Now, what this does in my case is:
1) After 1 Minute my Screen goess Off because of the setting under Start > Settings > tab System > Energy > tab Advanced.
2) Because of the HD Tweak, it locks the keypad.
So thats what you want.
Thank you very much, Seven_PRX! Your instructions worked perfectly, and just the way I wanted

With this solution, I had problem when the screen dims : the screen locks itself too. So, I needed to unlock it, but the screen doesn't light up no more. I had to switch my phone ON then OFF to have the full brightness back. But maybe it was a bug with my install...
But now, I use VJDeviceLock with its "VJDeviceLockInstall" that lock the phone when I switch it ON. If you have the problem I had, it might be the solution

That's why I don't have this problem you mentioned
Yep, I saw that just after posting my comment
But I like to have the light to dim to warn me that the screen is going off... So I thought I could give you another way to have an "autolock" function
Btw, a quick way to unlock your phone & turn the screen on is simply by taking out your stylus (this unlocks the phone & turns the display on). It's quicker than pressing the On button and then Pressing "unlock" twice.

Screen Not Dimming With Auto Shut Off Disabled?

Please bear with me as this may be a dumb newbie question. I searched every post on the Imagio section here and at PPC and was unable to find an answer.
Got the Imagio for my wife and she's loving it (we had Storms previously- bad, bad mojo). She uses Groovefish to stream music and the stock dimmer setting will shut down the player after the time limit is reached. No problem, right? Changed the setting to stop this (never auto shut down on battery power).
Now, the screen will dim somewhat when left idle, but never shuts down all the way. It's dim but still active. She's been having to change the setting every time in order to not kill the battery.
Should the screen power down all the way while leaving the device active (like hitting the "shut off screen option" after holding the end button)? If not, is there a way to do this?
Thanks for any insight you may be able to provide. I've done nothing but Blackberries for years and this is my first real foray into WinMo.
Try to check the power settings. Go to the Settings Tab and push All settings at the bottom. From there go to System > Power > then click the Advanced tab. That should have settings to turn off the screen after 1 min or 30 seconds.
Thanks for the quick reply. I probably should have been a bit more clear.
It is in that menu that I have been manipulating the settings. There are two options for battery power. There is one to "turn off backlight" after x amount of time, the other is to "turn off device". With backlight set to 30 (or whatever) and device disabled, the screen never completely goes off.
It functions properly with "turn device off" enabled, but interrupts Groovefish when playing. This does not interfere with the native TF3D media player. While its not the end of the world if she ends up having to change that setting to use the program, it would be nice to be able to disable the screen with a partial shutdown (and extra battery drain when using that application).
Cheers!
Thats interesting, seems like its the program thats doing that. I have Opera, FM radio, email client, etc. running all day without it crashing. I have seen this before with Internet Explorer where i would leave it running connected to a website. then when i check back IE is gone and i have to start it again. By any chances is this a website or an installable app that you are using?
Groovefish is a streaming music client that is installed on the device
BTW, it is incredibly cool if you don't have it yet. Stream just about any song you want for free (legally).

I use g-trigger to shake my phone to turn off the display works great! Just disable the shake to turn it back on.
I'll give it a shot and see if the application stays running. Many thanks!
Actually I think backlight off is happening when it "dims". You need the screen to go off, not just the backlight. Try using xdaShutdown to go into Lightsout mode and see if that works for you. The program can be found here:
