As title, can anyone recommend a decent freeware telnet application??
JJ comes with built-in terminal services client for use with remote desktop server. Or do you truly need a text terminal?
Pocket Putty is what you want.
I use it all the time. Not as useful as it could be as the JASJAR lacks a [ctrl] key.

Yes! Thats the best software for Telnet and SSH. Just google for it.
I'd already come accross Pocket Putty but decided not to use it as the last couple of pages on the users forum were nothing but complaints that it hung their PDA's during use.
Yes, i really need text based...it's for connecting to routers.
Surprising there's not more available considering the simplicity of telnet!
I am using Pocket Putty for SSH connection to my Linux Server. It's working very well on my MDA Pro. I have used it on MDA / MDA III and MDA Pro.
I am also looking for a text-based, secure, way to connect to my Linux machines.
I'm having some trouble with PocketPutty on my MDA Pro. I am using PocketPuTTY-v0.2-alpha-2k2-0.53b though I've used the prior version too. When I run it it doesn't hang the system really, but doesn't do anything either, just displays whatever's behind it or such. I'm assuming pressing the "ok" button is the same as pressing the non-existant "connect" button. I once saw a black terminal with a green square, but it was frozen and had no connection. Any sugguestions?
Does anyone know any other working SSH2 clients? Maybe more will be released when M$ releases real WM5 development tools ~Nov 7th. Thanks in advance.
I'm finding this works well for ssh: http://www.uni-bonn.de/~bbrings/
OpenSSH not quite yet, Pocket Putty working now
Thanks jp_howard for the useful tip. I currently can't quite get OpenSSH CE working for the following reasons:
1. Can't find console ported program to install on my device since http://www.rainer-keuchel.de/wince/console.html is offline.
2. (probably fixed when above works) Must edit the registry to add environmental variables, but can't figure out how in Windows Mobile 5 registry. I have the PHM RegEdit but can't find "HKeyLocalMachine->Environment" as in:
<snip>
cereg -k "HKLM\Environment" -n "UNIXROOTDIR" -v "\unix"
cereg -k "HKLM\Environment" -n "PATH" -v "\unix\bin;\Windows"
cereg -k "HKLM\Environment" -n "HOME" -v "\unix\home"
<snip>
If it's really any good, could someone maybe release an "HTC Universal OpenSSH CE do-it-yourself kit" with the files / resources we need. This would ease the setup of OpenSSH, which is what most users complain about.
Pocket Putty now works great! I'm running the older version directly (used to be running newer version through a shortcut), which fixes the crashes I had earlier.
The current version of OpenSSH that works on the Universal is here: http://www.uni-bonn.de/~bbrings/open_ssh_wince420.zip
I've attached a .reg file that should work fine. You can install the .reg file using TRE
Attached to this message is the console app and required DLL for openssh.

Works for me too, strange that the older version works and the newer doesn't.
jp_howard; Does OpenSSH allow you to set up a tunnel??
I haven't tried. I expect it would work, since it's just a port of OpenSSH, which has that functionality.

Hi Guys,
Some simple Questions that I cant seem to find much of a conclusive answer to for most.
Looking at purchasing the Orange version of the Himalaya/XDAii (SPV M1000) VERY shortly, but wondered if you guys (whom seem to know everything about these toys) could answer me some quick questions:
All software ideally would be opensource & and under FreeBSD or GPL2.
1. SSH Client - are there any available that support passphrases etc (recomendations)?
2. IRC Client - is there any (recomendations)?
3. IM Clients (other than M$'s) (recomendations) - looking for minimal functionality?
4. Does PPC2003 have a task switcher, or do you have to close, and reopen things?
5. Iv'e seen some posts here that talk about Linux connectivity, how good is it, and what exactly can be synced, and to what?
6. Can any of the syncing of contacts/mail etc be done to NON M$ apps on the PC with/without 3rdparty apps? Ideally anyone know of any apps to sync with Mozilla (under XP).
7. I assume email is regular pop/smtp/imap so one can whack in custom servers/details etc (ala non hotSPAMrelay.com stuff)? Or is there an alternative to M$LookOut thats known to work with mutiple accounts on the XDAii?
8. What level of Java is supported on these little things? e.g. will they run MindTerm SSH clients?
9. Anyone run this with sync/connection to WinXP running in a VM under Linux?
10. Is there a cygwin availble for the PPC2003 OS, and is it anygood? (Iv'e heard rumours of a M$ written version)
11. Can the Himalayer be used as a webcam via Bluetooth/GPRS? Im thinking 'not of me' webcam, being the camera is on the back
I was very badly dissapointed by the obscure and totally lacking information on M$ site - though it's probably there, just impossible to find like most other things.
Many Thanks Guys!
Re: SSH,IRC,IM cleints & Linux & connectivity/syncin
1. SSH Client
Avaible some clients. I think there are a PuTTY port too. I think without a keyboard, console window is unuseable.
2. IRC Client - is there any
I never use, search google.
3. IM Clients (other than M$'s) (recomendations) - looking for minimal functionality?
There is MSN built in, and does not working, because it need to upgrade There are an official ICQ program ww.icq.com.
This is nice:
http://www.movsoftware.com/products/imov/imov.htm
(AOL, ICQ, MSN)
4. Does PPC2003 have a task switcher, or do you have to close, and reopen things?
There is a very basic taskmanager-like memory manager utility built in. There is some utility program, they make a taskbar like desktop computers, and there is some real taskmanager and process wiever program. Search PHM taskmanager on the net.
To test, how the PocketPC working, download the free MS development SDK. It contains an emulator.
5. Iv'e seen some posts here that talk about Linux connectivity, how good is it, and what exactly can be synced, and to what?
I tested linux on ipaq 3630. Its good, but syncing with linux or windows is not working at this time. (only contacts as I remember)
http://www.handhelds.org
There is screenshots too, but it not work on XDA I think.
6. Can any of the syncing of contacts/mail etc be done to NON M$ apps on the PC with/without 3rdparty apps? Ideally anyone know of any apps to sync with Mozilla (under XP).
As I heard, you can synchronize with BAT.
7. I assume email is regular pop/smtp/imap so one can whack in custom servers/details etc (ala non hotSPAMrelay.com stuff)? Or is there an alternative to M$LookOut thats known to work with mutiple accounts on the XDAii?
I don't understand the question well because of my wrong english.
You can setup different accounts, and there is many 3th party e-mail clients. A free and good one: nPOP
8. What level of Java is supported on these little things? e.g. will they run MindTerm SSH clients?
There is several (mor than 10) different JAVA stuff for pocket pc. Search it on this forum! I have never tried java.
9. Anyone run this with sync/connection to WinXP running in a VM under Linux?
I don't know. The XP under the VM can see USB?
10. Is there a cygwin availble for the PPC2003 OS, and is it anygood? (Iv'e heard rumours of a M$ written version)
Good idea What do you want with your pocket pc? )
11. Can the Himalayer be used as a webcam via Bluetooth/GPRS? Im thinking 'not of me' webcam, being the camera is on the back
dont know
If you have more questions, write it. I will answer what I can.
Hey there, now that I've got my shiney new XDA Exec, with its VGA Screen and inbuilt Wi-fi I want to have a play with the Terminal Services Client to control my PC...I'm pretty sure that's what it can be used for right?
Well anyway from what I've read TSC can connect to (among other things) Win XP Pro computers with remote desktop enabled...however my computer only has XP Home so I can't do this, so can anyone recommend an alternative (possibly better?) program that I can use to control my XP Home PC using my XDA Exec....
cheers!
VNC (free)
GoToMyPC (not free)
There is more information in the "terminal services full screen" thread in this forum.
I have been using GoToMyPC for a long time. It's a subscription-based service. But I am happy with it. Very stable and functional. And full-screen.
prob with those apps is, terminal services connects to all modern windows operating systems and no extra software is needed, im not running round the country installing vnc onto everything, if its already got RDC/Terminal Services intergrated. On my work network i have access to 36k+ machines, yer 36,000 machines. all 2000,XP,2003, the other 30k machines are still NT or 98, upgrades aint a overnight thing!!!
so you see, not an option im afraid
*edit* what really grinds me is that i would have thought it was obvious to M$ that fullscreen should be an option, but as with the diabolical MSNM, the most obvious upgrades never appear, surlly in that groups aint a hard thing to do. and turn the bloody beeping off when ppl sign in.
Obvious things strategicly lost??
use www.logmein.com man its freakin great and you can use for free
if you put your device in landscape it is a clean view too
z2remote2pc works a little better than logmein, I think. A little more control of the desktop with z2. LogMeIn is nice though.
but do these apps use the RDC protocol ? i cannot amend 30k+ machines just to do remote desktop, it has to be compatible else its pretty useless to me soz
Carnivor, I presume your request is satisfied?
Why on earth 30,000 machines? Heyzus!
What PDA are you using?
V
30k machines is roughly the number of client machines the company i work for has. i have access to them all via TS, not that i need them all, i mainly access a handful of desktops that are mine, and the clients servers.
its quite handy to be able to wifi my desktop in the room next door when im standing at a rack in the server room as there is nothing but racks in there and an additional desktop in there would get easilly spotted.
im on a Jasjar btw, happy to test your app wink wink**
and i have VS 2005, is it poss for a 2003 project to be loaded into VS 2005 and compiled??? if you aint got it yet its a possibility
ps, ohh yes, im satisified, its what should have been done on theyre attempt ( M$ )
Carnivor - I have Visual Studio 2005 Beta 2. I'm waiting on RC1 because the tools I use in Beta 2 don't work properly on the WM5 emulator. As soon as I get a new version of VS2005, I'll sort through the WM5 issues and bang out a preliminary version for you guys to try.
The current version should still work nicely even on Wm5, but only in Portrait QVGA. However, a full landscape VGA version should follow soonish.
If you've got a spare VGA PDA, send it my way! I'm desperate
V
Microsoft Visual Studio 2005
Version 8.0.50727.42 (RTM.050727-4200)
Microsoft .NET Framework
Version 2.0.50727
thats the version i have
Hi! Hope you could help me (again) :?
First I need to tell - I was searching the forum and net, but unfortunately I can't find what I'm exactly looking for.
(I'm asking about Wizard not Universal / Himalaya...)
What is in your opinion the best (easiest, fastest, most readable with 320x240 resolution, working full screen and in landscape mode, cheapest...) way to remotely connect to the desktop workstation?
[1] Connecting to the Linux box
1A. Command line / shell via ssh/ssh2 – there’s no need to use any special server software nor configuration, but there’s a question about the best client software. Right now I'm going to use http://www.pocketputty.net/. Did you try any of these with Wizard?
PocketPuTTY 0.1 for WM2003 (stable)
PocketPuTTY 0.2 for PPC2002 (highly experimental, unstable)
PocketPuTTY 2006-05-04 dev snapshot for WM2003 (latest, highly experimental)
How stable is the “dev snapshot” version and is there any other (free or almost free) ssh/ssh2 client for PocketPC?
I used to use PuTTY for Symbian S60 and it worked like a charm...
1B. Remote Desktop – what is the best client-server software to do it?
I used to use VNC for Linux PC – Linux PC connection, but I’m not sure if it’s good idea to use VNC with (so) small screen. Any tips and tricks or suggestions how to configure both ends?
[2] Connecting to WindowsXP PC
2A. Command line / shell via ssh/ssh2 – is it possible at all?
Will I need software acting as a server on the PC or there is this kind of software already in the system? Tips & Tricks & configuration examples are very welcome
2B. Remote Desktop – the best client & server software to do it?
Should I use VNC (server and client, like under Linux) or Remote Desktop server already incorporated in WinXP (what about the client in this case)?
And finally – where I can find a manual, help files or specification of the TSC pre installed on my device? Is this software useable?
Maybe I’m looking for something I already have…
Sorry for plenty of questions, but longer I'm searching - more questions I have.
I really appreciate yours opinions
All advices, links, PM's are very, very welcome
Thanks in advance

To use the pre installed terminal server you need to turn on remote desktop (winxp pro) and input your ip address on the wizard in the terminal server application, as long as your firewall is configured to allow the connection you should be able to control your pc using the software you already have, alternatively you can use services like log me in etc.
good luck
post back if you hit trouble
Rob
I use logmein.com's basic, free service. simple, quick, encrypted and you dont have to remember ip's or anything.
try http://gomyplace.com/ if you need something simple just to browse files on the remote and execute commands in the command shell
you will need just a regular internet browser to access the remot host
free, open source (GPL), works in NATed, firewalled environments, dynamic IPs, etc.
runs on Linux/Win32/Mac requires Java on the host machine
client needs only internet browser
Linux
PocketPuTTy is the way to go for connecting to a linux machine remotely, I'm using the latest dev build on my PDA and haven't found any issues yet, although i have only been using it for about 2 days. It works fine on the screensize too as its only command line.
Windows
I wouldn't even bother with command line for windows, as its horribly underpowered and wont provide you with much usability. It is possible to run SSH on windows, but like I said, I would see no reason too.
I used to have a VNC client for my old Axim X50 which ran great, it supported screen scaling, so it would fit my entire 1600x1280 screen onto the PDA no problems, and zoomed in when I required. It was only really usable to perform very simple tasks, but thats all I needed. Unfortunately I don't remember the clients name, however there are a number on the market that provide the same features.. maybe trying the following?
http://www.parystec.demon.co.uk/pt_vnc_WM5.htm
I use realVNC for my server. Oh and any VNC client should work with any VNC server, so if you installed VNC on linux, this should work fine.
Hope that helps
Hi,
i am looking for an apllication to control myuniversal from a desktop computer.I have read it somewhere but i can't find the topic. What i want, is to use my PDA directly from desktop PC. As i remeber tha application was able togiv the full control to the PC and you was able to reach, run all appliacation and others from desktop monitor as if the desktop monitor would be display.
I need this because my screen had broken and before i send it to the service i need to use my PDA.

Try Microsoft Remote Display Control from this web link - but like with most applications you'll need to install it and run it on the Exec before you can connect to it so this may not be of much use...
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/wce/downloads/ppctoys.mspx#ELD
Start the "Remote Display Control Host" on your PC
Then on my Exec the key combination get this running once installed is:
Windows key->P (Open start menu and get to programs listing)
C then right arrow twice (Program is called "cerdisp" so on mine it's the 3rd application who's name starts with C, the first 2 being Calculator and Camera)
Enter then OK (Start the application and bypass the Microsoft copyright message)
C and then Enter (Connect and then accept the default hostname assuming you are using ActiveSync)
I hope this helps!

p.s. In my experience if you are using 640x480 this application only works in landscape. Not entirely sure why.
You want Pocket Controller from SOTI.
I use it at work - makes it easier to reply to texts - looks like I'm working while I'm actually arranging which pub to meet at that evening after work
That microsoft one is slick. Thanks!!! I have a wizard but this thread had recent activity so i checked it out. nice little app!!!.
You may also wnt to read http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=514&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 - it lists and compares ALL the available solutions.
Trying to figure out if there was ever a real Java VM developed for WM6. I know my TyTn II has something called Esmertec Jbed but when I try to run a MIDlet it says "the MIDlet could not be instatiated: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError"
Could someone else try this out and see if they have better luck?

Otherwise I'm looking for recoomendations on an application to use my WM6 device as a remote over bluetooth mapped to keystrokes on my vista box.
Thanks,

1. no BT in any J2ME's, sorry - read my MIDlet Bible.
2. check out my remote Bibles for alternates - for example, http://wiki.xda-developers.com/inde...s for Windows Mobile - the Definitive Roundup . I recommend for example PPC Tablet Remote Control Suite
Thanks for the write-up really shows a lot of options out there for media control.
I'm trying to use this to control XBMC, which primarily uses just the simple arrow keys. I got really excited by PPC Tablet Remote Control Suite but it seems that the keypresses don't work correctly in XBMC. That is to say that when I test them in another window they work, but then in XBMC I have no luck.
Then I tried jaylee.org’s Bluetooth Remote Control for Windows Mobile but I can't get the WM client to discover the server app.
Really I just need something that allows me to map controls on the display of my phone to keypresses at the PC (like the above programs)
Handy comparison table though.
