Blue Angel serial port - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

The HTC Blue Angel serial port reacts differently compared with earlier devices. Especially the HW-handshake lines don't fire an event when polling it with WaitCommEvent, something that worked fine on earlier devices. Did anyone come across that problem, too?

Blue Angel Hyperterminal and Telnetl Via Bottom Connector

Hi there
Part of my job envolves monitoring data from various sensors, this involves booting my laptop, pluging it in, cause the battery fecked, hookin to the sensor, 3 seconds to check the data then pack it all away again.
I think I`ve found a Hyperterminal for ppc called vxhpc, looks like it has the right functions.
I have opened a plug that I have that connects to the bottom plug, and I can see 22 pins, but I dont know which one does what.
I`m after com1 wiring I think, it will mostly be RS232 signals that I`m monitoring.
The options in the software are:
Serial cable on com1
CAM1
IR Port
Com2 Serial on usb
there are a few more.
I assume serial on com1 is the obvious choice, but you guys and gals will know better than me.
So the pin outs of the bottom connector, and if anyone knows of a better software, that would be fanastic.
The telnet part, I also have some telnet software called Mini Telnet, Many of the systems I work on control ship engines and thruster, If i could connect to the engine managment system network via the XDA2S, I could, In theory, control the ships movement, and monitor the system aswell.
Unfortunatly, due to saftey reasons, all networks on ships are hardwired.
Is it possible to connect from the bottom plug to a network hub ?????
If so, do you know how ?
Thanks for all your help
All the best
Nikki
just noticed, the Wallaby and Himalaya have the same wiring, does this mean, chances are the blue angel is the same again ? maybe ??
okay, i have been investigating a wee bit, my findings so far, this is about the telnet side of things, if I`mwrong anywhere, please correct me.
Taken from the wiki site
5 ANALOG GND
6 RS232_DCD
7 RS232_CTS
8 RS232_TXD
9 RS232_RTS
10 RS232_RXD
11 RS232_DTR
So, RJ-45 to DB9 pc comport
rj 45 side -------------------XDA2s Side
1 DCD------------------------6 DCD
2 DSR------------------------?? DSR, i dont see this one on the list, is it important ?
3 DTR-------------------------11 DTR
4 SigGnd----------------------5 SigGnd, Plenty of these
5 TXD-------------------------10 RXD ???
6 RXD-------------------------8 TXD???do i have these the right way around ?
7 CTS-------------------------7 CTS
8 RTS-------------------------9 RTS
So, does this look about right ? and how important is the DSR signal, I`m unsure of it puropse.
Like I said, if you see anything wrong, at all, please post
cheers
nikki
If using com 1 make sure you have beams switched off in settings/connections, also disable any external keyboard driver if present as this too will take com 1.

Serial port Blue Angel

Does anyone know if there are differences in the serial port between Blue Angel and earlier HTC versions. I have an app that runs well on earlier, even Win SE versions, but not on Blue Angel. Is the wiring different?
Thanks

Getting serial out of the USB port to control a robot

Hi,
As most of you have, I am getting a growing collection of old mobiles now, and I want to do something cool.
I have just bought a robosapien V2 and AXON robot serial controller. What I want to do is use my old XDA exec to replace the 'brain' of the robot, so to this end, I need to be able to squirt serial data out of the phone on a wire, of which the easiest would be the usb snyc/charge port.
I am using NET 3.5 as my dev language, and the idea being is to take advantage of the wifi chip to be able to, firstly send commands to the robot from anywear (cool huh?) and to be able to stream video & audio (using the skype SDK) from the robot back to the network.
Anyone have any ideas on how to go about doing this?
And if any of you are interested enough I can post my progress here, go on, you know you would all love a robot you could send down the road on its own
sounds nice, i have no guess what it needs to control the robot nor i know anything about serial ports but i really would LOVE a small gizmo that i can control this way to do important things like rolling here, rolling there and then rolling back here, following the cat and piling it on the floor, talking through the speaker to the neighbours or affront those selfinviters ).
i'm waiting for your progress
best regards, pucki

I suggest you take a look on BT to RS232/485 adaptors. There are some small nice ones out there. I think it'll be even cooler being all wireless, isn't it?
For example this ones here (from google, don't know the brand. Only used industrial ones until now on my projects):
http://www.alibaba.com/catalog/100402141/Bluetooth_To_Rs232_Adaptor_10m_Converter.html
This one can't be used because the phones are not class 1 devices (~100 mW , ~100m range) but just for the information:
http://www.alibaba.com/catalog/100402139/Bluetooth_Rs232_Adaptor_100m_603004.html
Good luck with your project!!

I think this is the better way. Unless the phone has a USB host controller (I don't think a lot of them has, most the USB port as client. We can sync because it was the active sync from the PC that initiate and control the session, not from the phone), this bluetooth to RS232 converter seem to be the best solution. I've been looking for something like this for a while.
Thanks for the comments guys, for some reason XDA dev isnt emailing me when comments were placed!
Blue tooth seems like a cool idea, would be better able to hide the bt dongle in the robot! will get hold of one and have a play when I get more than a bunch of wires will post some pics

[Q] Android Keyboard - Input Corruption

NC Original with CM7.1.0 with encore-32-zOMG kernel.
The keyboard works as expected without USB or with USB connected to the charger.
If the USB (B&N cable) is connected to my windows laptop each keypress on the android keyboard generates several spurious characters in the input buffer.
Also the Unlock slider does not 'slide' when the cable is connected to the laptop.
Reverting to the original CM 7.1.0 uImage behaves the same.
Does anyone else see this, or have any idea what is wrong?
Same with mine. Apparently a common problem.
In an attempt to understand what is going on I installed Sketch n Draw.
Seems to me that USB is depriving the touchpad of CPU cycles. Drawn segments arrive long after they were sketched or not at all with lots of input being lost.
I know that lots of work has been done to get USB host to work.
Does anyone know when this problem was first seen?
Presumably there is no point in testing BN stock as IMSMC input is off when USB is active.
FWIW, I had the problem when the last year when the NC was released -- the local B&N store swapped the unit without making any difference. It has persisted through rooting, all updates through 1.3, CM7.1 and MiRaGe Kang 7.2 (current system). My wife's has the same issue. From that, I would conclude that it's deeper than an OS issue.
I just don't use it for anything while it's plugged in!

New Dell Inspiron 15Z does not have HDMI output

My GF recently got the new Del Inspiron 15z ultrabook with touch display. Gorgeous piece of engineering and it's pretty nice from what I've experienced with it so far.
I decided to mirror it's display to the TV (1080p) using HDMI, like I always have with my own laptop. So I simply plugged the HDMI cable into the TV's input, and then the other end of the HDMI cable into the 15z's HDMI output. Nothing happened! No video or audio. I did the exact same thing with my own laptop on the same TV, and it worked fine.
I proceeded to call Dell support, who said I needed additional software. The guy wanted to direct me to tech support, and then told me that tehre would be charges made for the tech support. This is a NEW laptop we just purchased 2 weeks ago... the guy on the phone basically gave me an unsatisfactory response.
What am I doing wrong? I googled the problem, and a VAST number of people had this problem. Couldn't pin point a solution, but I found something that says I need to press FN+F8 to activate the HDMI port... never heard of that before. The thing I read is here http://techtips.salon.com/use-hdmi-slot-dell-laptop-548.html
Somebody please shed some light on this! I don't want to send the laptop back and be out a laptop for 2 weeks when school just started again!
OK... it seems I've been griping about people turning Dev&Hacking/General into a tech-support forum a lot, lately, but come on... this isn't even Win8-specific! Aren't there Dell-specific forums you could be asking this on? Or support people you could call/email/chat with/whatever other than the one you talked to already? You could also try the Setup utility in the BIOS/EFI (sometimes this is only accessible from the booted PC, in which case you'll need software that can be downloaded off Dell's site). Beyond that, if plugging the HDMI connection in and pressing Win+P doesn't work, take the thing back as defective and buy something that isn't a consumer-grade Dell (their Latitude line is good, and Vostro is OK, but Inspiron has a well-earned reputation for poor quality, and even their Latitude line has had some serious problems in the past. They just cut too many corners on price.)
EDIT: WIN+P, not CTRL+P
As GDTD said, bit random mate!? Its also very common to have to push buttons to enable it, very often this is the case with dual display hybrid devices but I've seen it on lots of things, another tripping point is HDCP hand shake, sometimes you have to have devices turned on and plugged in, in a certain order, a common one is to ensure the tv is powered off before pluging in and turned on. Another one is your laptop drivers, have you used manufacture specific ones? Or did you update to genuine amd,NVIDIA, Intel etc ones ? Sometimes, as nice as it is to use up to date drivers, they may not work, laptops etc frequently use customized drivers
Sent from my Lumia 900 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
Regarding the comment about the forum and tech support: this is the general section, where questions are frequently asked. Even if you go the general section of specific devices, people ask questions (arguably considered "tech" questions) there as well. And regarding if this is Windows 8 specific, how would I have known if it's WIndows 8 specific. This is the first W8 laptop I've handled, and all other W7 laptops I've used in the past do not exhibit this problem. From the average joe's perspective, the only thing that's changed is the OS for my situation.
dazza9075: I assume the specific driver is what the Dell customer support guy was referring to. I'm using this laptop straight out of the box with no software installed aside from what it came with.
GoodDayToDie: I'll give the CTRL + P thing a go. If I get no luck for the next week, I might have to return it. Thanks for the input.
WIN+P, not CTRL+P, not sure what I was thinking. It's the standard Windows shortcut to control external display modes.
