Photo Templates...

There are five photo templates by default, you know the ones where you can make believe you and your wife (or husband) are Man and Woman of the Year, or hanging on a clothes line etc? Where can you get more? I remember having these exact ones on the XDA2 and not being able to get more templates because the Company who made the Camera App had gone bust.
As I'm pretty sure they can't have gone bust (as it's the same system on the new Wizards) surely there must be some support, or at least some information as to how to create your own.
check this page out:

There are a few to download, and also how to make them.
then just put the file into the Template Folder in My Documents

New CoPilot 6 or TomTom 5

DECISIONS DECISIONS, any suggestions, yeah yeah I know that everybody loves there tom tom 5, but the brand new Copilot 6 is looking real good any votes
Personally I have only used TomTom and found it great, but Copilot 6 might tempt me away if I can get it at a decent price when I upgrade in October. Has anyone here used Copilot 6? It looks absolutely fantastic!
I use copilot live 6.
Some negative stuff I've noticed:
Startup is kinda slow, especially if you're loading poi's.
Poi's Can only go in custom poi's unless it's a speed camera - in which case you have to either do on your desktop or load the files into the "save" folder - at which point you then need to reload your poi's!
You can't change the voices except for the defaults, however those voices are only about 30 different OGG files - I guess you can make your own!
Technical support don't seem too interested in solving your problems, and I had to chase my calls twice before I got a response.
Good stuff:
maps are pretty responsive and clear.
live service makes this software perfect for courier firms, pizza delivery etc. but you do have to be on gprs constantly
live service also provides a four choice message option from internet to device, meaning your missus can ask for a pint of milk on the way home without you having to exit, answer and re-enter...
I'm happy with Jane (the british/english voice) and would recommend it
4/5
Question for you the CoPilot 6 user. Is the traffic updates over gprs a free service (apart from the gprs costs) and also does it route the direction voice commands over a bluetooth headset?
Anyone using route 66 out there? I know this provides a free traffic service, but what about the commands over bluetooth headset?
Copilot 6
I use Copilot, the programme is good. draw backs are its difficult to switch between map regions, i.e. US and UK. ALK the distrubitors suggest seperate SD cards but that impacts on any programmes installed on the card. their other solution is to use a large capacity card eg 4 Gig and rename the working folder each time you need to swap.
the other drwaback is that the refuse to release map upgrades as Navteq the map generators release them. this means i have maps that are a year old whereas navteq have released 4 verions this year. you can only get an update with copilot in the new year if you decide to purchase the new version.
the traffic updates are free for 1 year after that you have to buy another years subscription.

Let's hear it for the nOOb!

Hi guys, I'm really glad i found this place, i just hope i can learn enough to help contirbute down the road as well! But for now....
so, i went to the wiki list of hacks and apps, and i decided to try downloading the phone pad program, just to try.
There's not much literature there to help you out, so i just downloaded it to my lappy, and unzipped.
THe setup file is an XML doc, and i don't know what i'm supposed to do with that to get it on my phone....
Thanks for lending a noob a hand!!

If the file was a CAB file then do not extract on PC just transfer the CAB file to the device and double tap it to run it.

Thank you, i got it on the phone and opened it....
now i just don't know where to get it or how to use it.
BTW, the program i was installing is the phone pad that is posted in the Wiki thread.
No info on it there...

Hi
This particular application installs an additional way for you to input text and numbers on large touchscreen keys (bigger than the ones on normal touchscreen keyboard)
So for example if you are texting somebody and you touch the little keyboard symbol at bottom of screen you will see a little arrow beside the keyboard symbol. (i.e. don't open the keyboard by tapping it - tap the arrow beside it) A list will pop up allowing you to select different ways to input your text, anything from handwriting to your newly installed Phone Pad!!
This option for the keyboard is now available for all programmes where you would use the on screen keyboard. Keys large enough to save you the bother of using stylus and just use fingers.
Any problems ask here or send PM/e-mail details below

THanks very much mike, i found it!
Still a little tricky to get used to...It's funny, with all that my new PPC can do, i am finding i miss some of the simplicity of my old flip phone for things like just calling and texting. Maybe ei need more getting used to it still
That phone pad is a little different than i'm use to for texting....its a little tricky figuring out how to just select the word you want...or for ex, if you hit 1 and you want an !, do you select it at the list at top or is there a button that scrolls through the choices? those buttons on the left are a little tight up against the side to hit cleanly it seems, although no real misses yet.

Being honest I agree WM devices aren't the easiest of phones and there is a bit of a compromise between getting all the other fancy stuff and the phone part of the device. You will get more used to it as you say. To be honest I'm never in so much of a rush to call someone that I don't have time to use the stylus on the full touchscreen keyboard. And just think there are all those thousands of freeware application downloads for WM5 out there - just waiting for you to try!! Mind you a lot of garbage as well.
One follow on thought just for info:
CAB files as you now know you install fromm the device
EXE files for WM5 you run on PC whilst connected via Active Sync and they'll install automatically.
If I have a choice I go for the CAB file as I store it on the SD card rather than cluttering up my PC. Also If I need to hard reset all my cabs will be sitting their waiting for a quick tap and their programmes are back on again. Although I do use Mobsync which is an addon for Active Sync that allows me to back up my SD card to my PC and anything I drop into the PC Backup gets put onto my PC card when I do a Sync.

Great tips mike....
You are right, i am excited to make the most of my new wonder with all the free (and not free!) ware out there. That is what i think it's probably all about, cause i feel like out of the box it leaves a lot left to be desired.
I need to get myself an sd card quickly for that! Only problem is, i'm sure i'll want/need a 2GB card. A 1GB card is like 20-30, a 2 gb is closer to $90!! i bought this in a large part for nav software and the map data should take up a lot of space on a card. I guess i could get a 1gb for now or even have two, but swapping will suck i'm sure. What do you have for yours?
I have just 1gb, but despite having maybe 20-30 apps loaded and a copy of their cab files, a few photos and usual odds and ends it's only one third full. (Mind you, I put on lots but end up removing almost as many so application numbers only grow slowly) WM apps are really quite small. But certainly nav software and and maps will take a considerable amount. Spotted a package the other day bundling a TyTn + Blue tooth GPS receiver and Tom Tom software all for a price £50UK less than I paid for the Device alone and no SDcard.
Makes yer sick dunnit!
PS In early days I loaded all apps onto device memory and a surprising number it took. BUT it began to seriously slow down device even with quite a bit of memory to spare. Now I load everything to Storage Card with the important exception of those things the device needs to start up. e.g. Phone skins and any programs that run on today screen. It is essential to load these things to device memory as folks have found the phone alarms may not ring or device will freeze when calls come in if something it needs to start is buried on SDcard. The main ring tone as well - although it will work from SD card may cause a ring delay if on SD card leaving as few as two rings for you to hear before voicemail comes on. Live and Learn!!
This forum contains a wealth of info - more than I will ever need. Getting to be too many multiple threads on same issue though which gets confusing as some appear to find no solution to a problem and yet another may have just the answer needed.
Mike
EDIT: By the way if you like paying for apps.!! I think Wisbar Advance and Wisbar Advance Desktop are great. BUT learning curve is quite steep and a bit of an on-going project but allows multiple desktops to hold all those today themes and gadgets that just won't fit on one today screen.
that's some good stuff to know, and it's nice of you to explain all that too me. really helps clear some things up so i'm not asking as many q's later or just generally in the dark.
i've heard of others speak of WA before. in your opinion, what are the biggest must have programs and also some of the best values out there? i'm willing to pay for a good program but I like a free one as much as the next guy!
FYI...I work in sales and managing accounts in different areas will be key for me. so if u know anything that lends well for that I'd be interested.
thanks,

Here's a link to just some of the apps. I have on mine:
Look for the post by TCO who did a great job of finding all the links to the applications.

Here's a few mostly freeware application sites. Lots of rubbish in these but some maybe worth it. For anything specific for example if I wanted Excel on my device I'd just do a google search on: excel wm5. Freeware sites are everywhere but have your popup blocker on, some are good others are terrible. A google search on freeware WM5 will throw up lots of these. Also there can be the odd Java application that's good so may be worth a try.
I'm no expert in your work areas so guess you'll need to track down the good work related ones yourself though your kind of work would seem ideally suited to the typical tracking and accounting sorts of application. Some sites are nicely categorized.

Would you use this?

I have a question. If there was a site that offered both Movie & Music downloads, fully converted for PC, PSP, and most important PPC, with a one time charge of something like $1.00 to $2.00 for New movies, and 10¢ to 50¢ for single and full album downloads, and was available for Straight to PPC, no connecting to Sync, would you use it. My reason for asking is, Im just flat out not happy with the sites available now. This may seem pointless to you, but I would greatly appreciate any feedback or ideas. Any thoughts at all. Myself & a few friends want to make this happen, and in time (short time) make it free. The first couple months wouldn't be free, soley too fund getting the site up and packed with downloads . Were extremely serious about this, but need to know whether or not we would generate enough support. A simple yes/no, I would/wouldn't use this site would be more than enough, and doesnt take that long. Ideas about features that would make a site like this work better would be great. Thanks for your time and help.
A link to the sit will be posted soon. Its still not up & running for downloads, but we want your impressions on the features and layout.
THIS IS NOT A SPAM POST.
No for now....
You should add a Poll!
I would have to see the site and would also like to know where the Movies / Music comes from.

Forget TomTom, you may want to try this..

I was fed up trying to get TomTom working on my TP2, and after a lenghty process of talking to their technical deaprtment, and them finally saying that it is not compatible with the TP2 (load of boll*x) i needed to find an alternative.
Just by chance, HTC were giving a free 15 day trial of the Co-Pilot. Downloaded it, and within an hour i paid for the full blown version, and at only £25.00 it is just as good, if not better than TomTom, and at a fraction of the price.
Maps are easy to buy, and none of the crap that you get when trying to buy and download them from TomTom.
Try it for yourself http://www.alk.com/htc/uk/
Note, you cannot uninstalled co-pilot later if you decided not to use it. You have to end up hard reset in order to get rit of it.
Good luck
Ok ok, i know, im thick.
I downloaded this, followed the instructions on the HTC website, and cant start the app.
There appears to be no .exe, and no entries anywhere for it in the OS ?
Would someone with grey matter care to enlighten me please ?

I'm no fan of TomTom's board of directors, or it's marketing and sales department. I am, however, impressed with TomTom's software. I've been using TTv6 on my old PDA/Phone for over two years, and it's never steered me wrong. I will not, however, be parting with my hard-earned cash for an updated version of TomTom because of TomTom's intransigence and ignorance of their original customer base. as a result, I'm testing various competitors products for myself...
I've been trialling CoPilot7 (there's no v8 trial atm), and my experiences most definitely do not match yours.
I have found:
The routings to be questionable - TomTom is better at routing.
The vocal instructions are lacking in some VERY important places.
Its handling of POI files, and particularly Safety Camera file imports (Pocket GPS World camera files) is appallingly managed.
It cannot accept custom POI icons.
One of it's main safety features is buggy - auto switching from day to night maps is not handled at all well - in many cases, the changeover has been effected AFTER light levels have effectively fallen to near night levels.
I have no idea what the brouhaha over it is, it's not at all what I was led to expect, and about the only positive pair of things I can say about it is that the maps were up to date, and the maps were at least clear and easy to understand.
I have three more days of the ALK CoPilot 7 trial left. I will not be purchasing it, and will be deleting it, and removing al registry entries relating to it, once the trial is over.
I'll be testing navigon next.
Oh, and if you want to see my full experiences over the testing period, look at my blog (see sig strip)

Navigon's the next package I'm testing...
Here's a tricky one then, and I can't see it in the FAQs over on the Navigon site - how the heck do you run Navigon Navigator 7 once you've copied all the runtime files onto your storage card - it doesn't have a dedicated CAB file, and thus doesn't get assimilated into the WinMob device registry, and thus doesn't appear in the program listings?!
Are they seriously telling me that I have to run File Explorer, go to the Navigon folder on my storage card, and find and run the main program executable file in there, EVERY time I want to run the software package on my TP2?
Either they're having a laugh, or this is gonna be of of the shortest trial runs in history...

Only problem with iGo8 is the limitation on the card used to run the package - 2 gig non-transferable. In these days of increased storage capacity, that's a pretty feeble attempt at Corporate Humour.
OK, so limiting the card size helps them prevent software piracy, I can follow the logic - they issue the card themselves, and can thus make sure that the package looks to particular places on the card for particular run-time files. Common sense there. Copying the card will change the address on the card of those files, and thus render the software useless. No arguments there, but hells bells, surely they could figure out a safe way to allow users to migrate the package onto a larger size storage card for ease of use with other data as well?
That's the ONE sticking point I have with iGo8 - the card. Not the package - the reviews I've seen look excellent. It's the storage limitation. Without a satnav package on it, the 16 gig card I currently use is already pushing 4 gigs of saved data, from MP3s to video files, documents of one form or another, imagery (photos and diagrams) and so on. Adding a satnav package to THAT card makes sense - I don't wanna be forever changing out cards willy-nilly.
THAT'S the limiting factor, and thus the deal breaker as far as I'm concerned.

Roger,
You dont work for a consumer watchdog do you? LOL
PMSL, no Jim, I just get very hacked off with firms that ignore the very custiomers that made them what they are when it's convenient for them to do so. Not only is it very poor customer relations practice, it's shoddy business practice, and frankly insulting to those customers. Gets my goat, somewhat, as you might've noticed
So, I fire back with whatever I have in my arsenal, which is mainly, as the small bloke on the street, my gob The fact that I can stick together a few words here and there and produce a coherent sentence along the way is merely a by-product of a reasonable education and a very poor attitude *evil grin*
Oh, and Navigon does, it appears, have a cab file... just took forever for my TP2 to "see" it, which it only just did, some six hours after I installed the software, lol
I know there are pro's and com's for every product out there, but can someone do some market research on the cost of these products?
I know that TomTom can be purchased for about £90.00 for UK and ireland maps, and even more for European ones, But Co-Pilot can be purchased for £26.00, correct me if im wrong, but you dont go and buy a Ford Fiesta and expect it to go 200 miles an hour!!!!!
You do pay for what you get, and this must be taken into consideration.
26 quid? dunno where you got that price, mate, but it may not be the "live" version you're looking at, which is £55.99 direct from ALK themselves. - http://www.alk.eu.com/buynow/cpl7_hd.asp
Interestingly, the one product I WANT to try, which is NavMii, and IS dirt cheap compared to TomTom (45 quid near as dammit), and allegedly has CoPilot beat hands down even in it's current early version, doesn't have a trial version...

I'm using McGuider 2009 atm. Instead of TT7 it does have lane assist. http://www.mcguider.com
I tried Navigon after the TomTom bluetooth fiasco. I liked the 30 day free trial, and the spoken street names.
I didn't like the fact that it appears to only have an ABC style keyboard, it took forever to start up, and for some reason, even longer to shutdown. It wanted to warn me that I was exceeding the 30mph limit for the 50mph dual-carriageway I was on every few seconds, and that its route planning decided that the best way along a test route from A-B was through the centre of a town, rather than via the by-pass (it was set to fastest route option). The menus seemed clumsy.
Comparing Navigon with TomTom, I would buy TomTom anyday, and rip the bluetooth files from the cab before installing.
I would like to give Garmin a go since I have a rather old, standalone Garmin sat-nav, and trust it fully. However there seems to be no free trial option, and with the way software seems to not play well with the TP2, I'd rather not take the risk!
Be intersting to see others feedback of comparisons.

I use the North American version of IGO8 (OCN8) on my Touch HD (maybe soon Touch Pro2). OCN8 is a feature packed program with nice graphics, but it's a memory hog. It's slow when my HD with Onkolog's custom ROM has 130 MB (150MB at boot!). From what I've seen, the Pro2 has 90MB at boot making me ask the question; which GPS application for North America will run well on the Pro2?
I use IGO 8 on a 16GB miroSD card...so the free space is not a problem.

Obvious question... HOW did you get it onto a 16 gig card? Nav'n'Go only supply either 2 or 4 gig cards, and state you can't copy it to a fresh card or it'll stop working?!

You need to put a shortcut in the \Windows\Start Menu\Programs Folder. Can't remember if the option to paste shortcut is available in the standard explorer as I use resco explorer. But if it is, just copy the MobileNavigator.exe file from the navigon folder and paste shortcut into the programs folder, or straight into the Start Menu folder if you want it as one of the fixed shortcuts on the windows start menu.
igo 8
right igo use only 2 - 4 gigs sd.
