lately the touchscreen on my T-Mobile MDA sometimes stops responding, sometimes after slowing considerably. Up till now I have been able to get it going again after (several) soft resets, turning it on and off and fiddling around with it in general. There doesn't seem to be much of a pattern to it though.
Does anyone experience the same problem and/or know what might cause it and how to fix it?
Thanks!
Too many programs running? X doesn't close programs, it just minimises them.

I'll give that a try. I assume it will explain itself as to how to use it.
Thanks a lot!!!

Nope. I checked and once or twice even a soft reset didn't fix the problem, so there weren't any programs running at the time. Thanks for the suggestion anyway, though; I'm pretty new at this XDA stuff, so you never know
Previous 2 entries were mine. Forgot to log in, sorry
Hi,
Man I know how frustating that is. I had a similar problem a few weeks ago where the touchpad only worked when I used my fingers, it didnt' respond to the stylus at all... I was *this* close to hard resetting or sending it in for repair, but a friend of mine suggested re-aligning the screen. Worked like a charm. Give it a try. I'm bogged down at work so I dont have time to look at where it was, but I think its in settings > screen somewhere.
Good luck!
Yesterday i cut a Screen Protector from an Ipaq hx 4700 to fit my Qtek S100, i cut it a little bigger so that it would fill the whole screen and be under the edges, what happened was that i couldn't tap anywhere, i did a Hard Reset thinking it was a bad configuration or something i did wrong, but the problem was the screen protector...i removed it and know it works just fine! I used Xbackup to restore my data and everything now is right!except i don't have a screen protector...

Yeah, I read about the screen protector issue before. That wouldn't explain why it is working fine most of the time in my case though. About your problem, the general consensus seems to be that the problem is the screen protector touching the sides. You could try again but cut it slightly smaller.

I've tried running this on the device but it doesn't seem to do anything. What am I missing?
I've even removed the screen protector, but that didn't fix the problem either. Right now it is part of the screen (lower left) that is not responding. It's starting to get pretty annoying, but I'm reluctant to have T-mobile send the device off for repair. Since there's no fixed pattern to the problem I expect some repair guy is probably just going to hard-reset it anyway, try if it works for 5 seconds and send it back
Joost, let me know if you managed to resolve this... I have the same problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=18224
Will do, but it's not looking good. I can't seem to pin down a pattern, so it's hard to try and eliminate possible causes. I'm 99% certain it's a software problem; it comes and goes and I'm not even using a screen protector that might cause it. It seems to have something to do with calibration/alignment, because usually it's only part of the screen that becomes unresponsive (bottom left or bottom right mostly)...
As you can see (in the thread linked above), I managed to solve it -- it seems like there was a registry setting (in my case).
Did you ever manage to pin down what registry setting was responsible?
no, I didn't spend any time/energy on it -- but you can follow my steps if you want to try that route.
But I am not sure it is the same in your case, for mine it was constant after the ROM upgrade, not something that would come and go...
I think I've got it!!! Bad touch screen response (and general slowing of the device) seems to be related to weak/no network reception. Probably Windows Mobile gives priority to reestablishing network connection over some other processes, amongst which is screen response. This would be ok if the network routine only tries at intervals, freeing up time for other stuff inbetween, but it seems it just keeps trying continuously.
The way to solve this is probably to lower the priority of the network connection routine. So far, so good... Does anyone know if this can be done, for instance by changing a registry setting? If so, which one and what value?

I had the exact same problem of non-responsive touchscreen once i installed the protector which came with the device. After reading thro this thread, i slightly lifted the protector from the bottom edges and VOILAA!! the screen works again.
Strange problem this !!! Thanks for all the help.
Guys, I hope you can help me!
I was using my Imate Jasjar when it was accidentally bumped by another person. the Jasjar fell but it wasn't that high and the floor was carpetted. However, I noticed that whenever i try to tap on the Start button on landscape mode, the calendar application opens up! And when I try to tap V-Bar on the other corner opposite the Start button, the Contacts application opens up. Basically, the soft keys on the bottom screen are the one opening up even if I'm tapping the ones on top! If I tap the bottom soft keys, I thought the Start button or my V-bar would come out but still the Calendar and Contacts applications were the ones that opened. Basically the everything on top cannot be tapped!
On Portrait mode, I can tap the start button but when the V-Bar was tapped it still opens the Contacts application.
I went to Settings then Screen to re-align the screen. I thought it would solve the problem but apparently it didn't! I was trapped in the Align Screen section giving me an endless loop to tap the 5 areas of the screen.
I now did a Hard Reset, and now I'm forever got stucked to the Align Screen part.
What am I supposed to do??? Please help!!!
Hi,
Seen the same problem... Try to guess the error margin of the alignment...
for example instead of tapping in the center of the cross try tapping on left or right... Since your screen isn't aligned you can't press on the center...
Now the problem is hardware, not the MB but the LCD...
After tou figure out the margin error, the Universal will resume and then you ca align the screen via Start->Settings->System, align screen
I'll try to know more about this problem asking my friend.
Best of luck
thanks for your reply!
i also believe that it has something to do with the LCD. there are no cracks whatsoever. problem with the aligning is i have to keep on guessing. and if ever i do align the screen successfully, i'm not sure if re-aligning the screen in Settings would solve the problem.
i would appreciate though if your friend or anybody else can shed light to a solution.
This is a simple problem to solve ;-)
When the allign screen is ON and you have to make the first tap on the crosshair (just before you start clicking away to allign your screen), twist your display from landscape to portrait mode...
Now continue to allign it as usual, and you should finish successfully!
Cheers,
San
unfortunately, after following your instructions, i still went on an endless loop on aligning the screen. i'll try to reflash the rom and see if it would work. i hope it does...
i updated my ROM. still stuck on the alignment screen!
any more ideas?
To be honest, sounds like your screen is broke. Even if you got it to align, I doubt it would be very usable. I think you are looking at repair - if there's no visible sign of damage, you might get away with a warranty repair.
Cheers,
Steve.
Hi
Few months back i've got exactly the same problems (odd LCD behavior, impossible alignment, etc...) with an HP4700. I went to the service center and they had to replace the LCD screen. They did not charge me and take it under warranty. In my case the unit did not drop and i made it clear to them. I would suggest you go back to the service center and forget about the drop in your problem description .
Cheers,
Bruno
I had the same thing happen on a HP 3700, I did not even drop it all i did was install the Quake game for it and after a few days the screen alignment went a bit out. It was usable but definately out by about 1 cm in each direction. The unit had not been dropped. I went into the allign screen utillity and ended up in the infinite loop. The only way to fix was a new screen. But unforunately it was no longer under warranty. The screen consists of 2 separate parts the lcd and the touch screen bit. In my case the lcd had no issues just the touch screen. Very annoying but there you go.
Search your soul and do what you feel comfortable with.
Good luck
Charlie
thanks for all your replies!
i've made several searches yesterday with similar problems (even if they're using different PPC models) and they all ended up sending back their units for repair. there's even one who posted in expansys with the same exact problem!
we'll be sending it back through expansys (we got the unit from them) and hopefully get it back before the end of the month. and yes, i won't tell them that it was dropped, he he  and they won't find evidence either on the outside because there are no physical damages. what a start of the new year for me <sigh>
right now i'm back using my XDA IIi.
thanks for all your support! this is my first thread/topic in this site and it's so unfortunate that it had to be sort of a negative one. looking forward to be active more here!
Hello there
This might help (I am currently wrking with 200 PDAs so have had this a few times)
THere may be a iece of dust/biscuit crumb etc, under the edge of the casing above the screen, try using a post it note or paper and go around the casing/edge of screen, this should clear the screen of anything that may be causing this problem.
THis worked for me on the majority of non-aligning screens
HTH
DB
My story was, one day when I needed to twist the screen, it was a bit stuck so I twisted a bit harder, yes it went back. Then few days later, the mis-alignment started and since then I have been keeping to do re-alignment my screen.
My screen is mis-aligned once every 2 or 3 days or even few minutes then I have to re-align by using WM5's alignment program. It sometimes takes me 2 or 3 times or even one time.
The most anoying thing is it keeps forget after aligned screen.
Now, certainty, I don't think it is a screen problem because after running alignment app, it correctly pointed into the right spot but then it forgot where the right position was.
I have done the upgraded ROM ( even tried Ivan AKU 3.2 ROM ) but problem still persisted.
I just tried clean up the edge of screen, finger cross, hope it fixes my problem.
Bad thing is, I bought my device from UK and I am living in Australia so therefore, my warranty is definately invalid. I don't want to spend 200 AUD for the new screen ( unless I am 100% sure that LCD is faulty ).
Anyone has any idea or even a better suggestion because I don't see many people having this problem.
I suspects that maybe the flex cable got ripped but not totally ripped. Don't know , please help me out on this one
Best regards
Anyone has any idea about my problem ??
One question :
I know that the flex cable has 2 connectors ( one is for LCD display and another is for LCD function ). Now does LCD function relate to the touch screen function ? and if one tiny wire of the function cable got cracked, but not totally cracked, will it affect the touch screen function ?
Other thing, does WM5 store any setting relating to screen alignment setting ? If yes, where is it ?
Thanks
Hi, from another forum, it only help to bypass the alignement loop:
"here you go theses are simple steps to bypass the touchscreen alignment.
Install you activesyn blah blah blah when it finds it go on my computer and go into your PDA device
go to windows startup and delete the Welcome file
after that give your PPC a soft reset and BAM u by passed the screen now get a free desktop program liek pocket controller from the internet it will automatically install on your pda and BAM you can control your pda add music and whatever
but now if you want to click stuff on the road get pen irazu just search on google and send it to your PDA then go to file explorer and double click it and you got a cute little mouse program that you can use like a stylus"
also try this little soft:

Hope it helps.

Hi godtakeit!
I've had the same problem a few weeks ago (and still having it from time to time) and for me a slight (very careful) bending of the screen makes it work again. It seems to me that there are connector behind or near the display which has some loose contacts.
Did you notice any other problems which came in conjuction with the alignment problem (e.g. speaker not working)?
.ox
Hi oxident
No, I don't have problem with speaker ( it was not working before but it is because of the jack plug problem - it solved ). Yeah, I did notice if I bend the screen carefully, the problem is gone. The funny thing is when I aligned the screen, it worked but if I closed it off and left it over night, it started again when I opened the lid.
You may right about the connector between LCD screen and mainboard. Well, I have no choice but openning the device and check it up.
Also, I read the thread somewhere in this forum and somebody advised this problem maybe relates to magnet around device. My brother aslo advised me that LCD charged and reserved negative electrons. Wierd but I am experiment it at the moment ( taking off battery and leave the device for a few days so that it can release the negative electrons ).
Hope it fixes
please help
i have an imate jas jam that i i got from my father he used it for like 3 years and it is pretty banged up so i cant use the warranty and repairs cost a lot, any who i got it yesterday and it was very slow so i reset the settings and now im stuck on the align screen it keeps going on for ever and ever if any one knows any thing plzzzz help
Welcome aboard
You have one of the best HTC devices ever made!

Post number 2
Good luck,
I brought CHT9000 at July 2006 and O2 Trion at August 2006. Both have disalignment problem. At first I thought it is ROM problem and happened for certain model and S/N only.
I try 4 ROMs : I-Mate, Dopod ENG ROM, TyTN and New CHT (Taiwan) ROM.
I installed these ROMs and without installed 3rd parties software. Also I proceed all necessory method to prevent this problem happen such as set a false exchange server for activesync and unclick USB to PC (Check my post).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=58633
However, all of them have this fuxking disalignment problem.
It is hardware problem and I have 2 possible methods to produce this disalignment happen to your TyTN:
1. Body Heat. i.e. Charging, Surf internet and Long talk.
2. Apply very little pressure on LCD. i.e. Cleaning your LCD Panel.
You will find this fxcking disalignment happen again. If you encounter this problem, don't realign the screen manually. Wait few mintues and you will found that it will re-align again. Now you can re-align the screen manually this time.
I already sold my device and not recommend anyone to buy it. It seems that HTC cannot solve this problem and perhaps they don't know the causes.
If you want to buy it, please wait.
If you brought it, good luck and godspeed.
i have sent mine back because of it
This is the HTC official answer to my request:
Good Afternoon,
There are now procedures in place for fixing the screen alignment issue with the TyTN devices. This is a hardware issue that we have identified and we are offering a replacement to owners of affected devices with two conditions.
1: The device must be returned with all accompanying accessories.
Everything that was in the box when you bought the device must be in the box when you return it.
2: The device must be a Genuine HTC Badged device. This means that the device cannot be a Vodafone v1605, an O2 XDA Trion, a T-Mobile Vario II or any other device based on the TyTN, but that is not actually a TyTN. For these devices, you must contact the Network/Reseller for further advice on this issue.
If you meet these two provisions, you may contact your nearest repair centre to arrange the swap. Please place everything back into the original box and arrange to have the device picked up. It will then be tested to confirm that it has the problem, and then it will be swapped for a replacement unit.
If you are unable to return everything, you will be eligible for a repair under the warranty. For this also, you can contact your nearest repair centre to arrange this.
Cheers
Mine goes back Tuesday hopefully the replacement unit will not have the same issue.
There are people who fixed their issue by ROM Upgrade. There are people who just bought their Hermes got this problem. Some has SN HT63XXX. There also some people who been swap their units, and the issue came back.
Well, as I see it, HTC does not know how to fix this issue 100% since it is also happening on some Dopod 838, 8125 (models with sliding keyboard).
I will upgrade my Trion this weekend, and if this issue persists... I will sell this baby and reactivate my trusty Universal.
A colleague was able to fix the problem by untightening the two screws on the back of the display and retightening them (not quite as tight as before). His device works without screen alignment problems ever since.
It seems that the screws are too tight which causes tension on the LCD resulting in screen alignment problems.
Magnet Theory
A friend of mine with CHT Dopod 9000, did this and fix his alignment issue.
"When Slide the keyboard, there's a magnet that activates the landscape mode. It's in the back of the screen when you slide it. ( I tried to put it near a magnet and the lanscape activates!)
Then I put a tape at the back of the small protruding (hunchback) just enough to be able to slide it close. This will decrease the magnetism receive from the main body when is close. Then for a week, it's good than before that I need to align 5x a day."
I know this true, since I met him and check his device. I even tried to massage his display, or run it hot.
I will try it myself... let u posted...
The problem only started for me after I installed a screen protector (Martin Fields, an excellent choice!), and since then I've had to re-align the screen every day. This morning I tried the screw trick, so I'll report back if it works for me.
Also I should point out that I have an MDA Vario II, so it looks like those of us who waited are no better off.
The next problem I have to deal with is an unresponsive 'C' key on my keyboard...
alignment issue is SW or HW or Both...
But unresponsive key(s) is really a HW, my first one has the "L" and backspace.. and it always like that, try to press it fast and it will not register all unlike the rest.
goodluck to all of us!!
Anyone that has sent their TyTN back in for repair/replacement for the screen crapalignment, please report back when you get your TyTN back. I want to know if it's worth making the effort to get mine replaced, seeing as I live in Australia and I don't exactly have HTC repair centres, mainly on account of that they don't sell this here. BUT if it's worth getting it repaired/replaced, i'll try to make arrangements with my ebay seller and/or some overseas repairing people.
Cheers guys,
~Louis x_.

Hi I I have a small problem with my Vario II with Ebay I have bought at an auction has exchanged with the Seller because he meant the touchscreen is broken, well, besides, I imagined nothing one can still use it, However, now I wanted this gets put back this everything goes though, however, as Windows me asks the touchscreen to aim I can make nothing the touchscreen is broken is there any alternative?
MY einglisch is not so good
YES but ive found a new Touchscreen, but it takes time after the paket will be here i want also se the MDA
Mike, I think Dracon775 means "use"...
You need to find a program called Remote Screen Alignment (you can find it if you google it - its freeware). It can fix this BUT you will also need a friend who has the same phone to get the alignment settings as this program stores them on he pc.
It was intended for people who can't, for medical reasons, hit the 5 alignment points so they can have these great devices also.
Cheers...

Aaaaghh. I am on a trip overseas and the backlight of the LCD screen on my Dopod 838 Pro just went out. Under a bright light I can make out the screen changing as things happen, but it kind of makes it hard to read (impossible!!). Luckily TomTom kept talking to me, although not as good without the picture of the map to follow!!
Anyone heard of this before? Have read of a few "white screens", but this seems different to other posts.
Would appreciate any tips on fixing or replacing the screen. I plan to try to pull the machine apart and make sure a connector hasn't come loose when I get home, but am hoping I am not up for a new machine just yet.
Although this may be an excuse to upgrade to the Touch HD when it available in Australia!!
Thanks in advance.
3 things
try 1st
make sure your brightness is turned up, settings/system/backlight
try 2nd
backup device, hard reset, see if this works. ( the backlight should not be a software issue, but it is possible)
try 3rd (although I would try this 2nd if you can, because if this works will not lose your personal data like you will in step 2)
take apart and check the flex, (common cause of this problem)
Thanks, time to find my torx screwdrivers!!
Have been playing with as many settings as I could see with a bright torch, and then tried a hard reset (fortunately it was still able to connect to my PC for backing up data).
Even loaded a new ROM OS.
It happened to my Jasjam and I found the scroll wheel circuit board was the culprit (don't ask me how). I managed to get a "broken" Jasjam off ebay for a fair price and cannabalized it for the part I needed. Fixed it nicely.
I don't know if your is the same thing but if you can get a hold of a "broken" Hermes it might be worth a shot. Found the "broken" Jasjam had nothing wrong with it either. Good buy for $120AUD...
