sounds and notifications help - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

i was just wondering if theres anyway of setting different sounds for notifications instead of just the standard tones.so that i could have my own wav,wma or mp3 tones for stuff like message alerts.

If you have any wma files on your pda/sd card, just tap and hold on it and it should say 'set as ringtone', as for wav's just make up the tune on your pc and then put it into the directory '/windows' on the pda. Then under the sounds and notification menu you should be able to change the sounds of whatever notifiation you want to change to the file that was added into the directory.
Hope that helps you, it works with mine when i do that.
There is also a file on this FTP server that enables you to use mp3 files as ringtones!

thanks for that got some cool new sounds now and great on the mp3 ive installed that aswell works a treat, ill keep going with the easy stuff like this pretty soon ill be able to tackle the hard stuff like upgrades lol.

changing the systems default sound set

Is there any way (via the registry or whatever) that the system sounds, such as the stylus tap sound and start menu sounds etc can be changed on windows mobile 2003? i know there is a program called SoundZ cool but i dont see the point in paying for an app if its possible to do it yourself
They are all sounds in the windows directory.
Some you can choose in Settings/sounds & notifications
Other you can overwrite the files with another with the same name.
Probably you could change it somewhere in the registry, but don't know exactly where.
funnily enough, i havent tried replacing them as i thought they may be in rom :? ill have a go now cheers m8
nah, just as i thought - the files are stored in ROM rather than RAM so you cant just replace them. It looks like either a registry change or cooking a new rom coz the default sounds on pocket pc are rubbish! if anyone has any information on whereabouts in the registry i could change these sounds please say so! ive looked through it and cant find anything really
You are correct, the .wav files for all the events are stored in ROM, but that doesn't necessarily mean you can't change them.
You can replace them for any sounds you like as long as you named them the same.
Here you have the ones I use. Just unzip and copy to your /windows/ folder on the Pocket PC and make sure you answer YES to the overwrite requestor. You are not actually overwriting anything, in fact, if you ever want to go back to your old sounds, just delete them from the /windows/ folder and SOFT-RESET.
**NOTE** I just couldn't attach the .ZIP file with the sounds, if you like to have them please email me at rayan(at)sonyericssonfans.com

Sergio
That's correct, you can change virtually every sound provided you know what the names are of the .wav in \Windows.
I myself substituted all the default ones for those in WinXP and it sounds a lot better. I never liked the old xda sounds and so ever since having the first XDA I changed them.
I just wish I could figure out a way of letting the phone play .mid files as message alert tones...I know you can convert them but they don't sound the same.
Cheers

why does my fone say "unable to access the file" when i click replace?? is there a way to get around this??
Thanks!!
I actually changed the "select" and the "menu command" wav files to those of my liking. Thru some explorer app. such as "Total Command" I copied those two files available under Windows to some other folder and changed the attributes of the "Rom", "ReadOnly" & "System" to be "Archive".
Returned them back to Windows with the same attrib.
Overwritten them with ones of my choice such as "Spece MenuPop.wav"...
Mind you that you need to rename them exactly the original way and case sensetive.
Some how limitations are limited!! 8)
Cool.. great tutorial...

Phone app notification (payg credit amount)

Every time i send a text message i get a bell and a box come up telling me my remaining credit. This is all very well but i cannot silence this bell. Even if i turn all the volume sliders onto silent and uncheck the play sounds boxes in the sounds settings.
anyone help me get rid of this ?
thanks.
malty
proud new owner of o2 xda mini s
anyone help with this ? i thought i must be able to just delete the wav it uses (notify.wav) but its in the rom and doesnt go.
It's really annoying that even with the vol sliders all the way down and the sound unchecked this sound STILL plays
anyone help ? please !!
I had the same problem with the message sent sound, it really got on my nerves! Just create a silent wav sound in Nero wave editor or a similar application and then transfer it to your wizard's windows directory to overwrite the existing one. sorted!
tried that, i created another notify.wav but cos the original is in rom it wont let me overwrite
ok following a recommendation to use total commander to do the copying, i did, and it worked.
Not sure how, as the original file is a read only file in ROM but nevertheless it worked. Windows explorer using the pc to browse/copy whilst synced wouldnt do it.
Cheers,
malty

Message sounds?

My first post in this incredible forum, I have all ready found so much help here and are most thankful, please keep it up.
Is it possible to make your own message sounds and use them when recieving text messages etc.
If possible at all what format should the file be in (mp3 wav)?
Tried with an mp3 placed in the windows folder it seems it cant find it.
Any help would be appreciated.
I'm not an expert so hopefully one will reply, but I think they have to be .wav and I think they have to go in the \windows\rings folder.
cheers

Actually, you are 1/2 right, they need to be wavs, but they go directly into windows, not in the rings folder.
Steve
Yep steve is correct the sound file will need to be a .wav and place into the windows folder, ring tones can be mid,wav and so on and they are placed into the rings folder within windows.

You might try Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/
It's a free download. I use Sound Editor in Roxio's Media Creator 8 -- one of the MANY useful tools in that program.

YW -- (but I'm a GAL -- not a guy)!! LOL!! But, that's ok -- none of my friends can believe how "techy" I am, either. But, I'm the first one they come running to with a problem. Go Figger!!
Cheers all,
You keep refering to ring sounds, I am looking for Sounds for alarms and recieved messages, and alerts in general.
But I will try it now with wav files in stead of mp3.
Manindesert,
I'm using Sound Forge 7, but then again I really need it for all my music stuff, so give Audacity a shot.
Update Works fine with alarm and message sounds, thank you all.
Is there any way, hack or otherwise, that will allow you to point your rings/sounds to your SD card? Thought it would be nice to free some space and stop having to move files on and off the card. I change my ring tone with my mood
Javahater,
I've been loking for a hack/program/setting that will do that, but no luck so far.
Unfortunately, all SMS & ring tones must be located in main memory!
But there's a possibility to create a program that will browse a folder of ring tones on SD card & once u select a tone, it will be copied to main memory (and of course erase the old default tone from main memory) & will set this new file as the default ring tone for the phone.
Javahater and Ezzkht,
Maybe you should look here http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Wizard_Tweaks scroll down to this "ANY FOLDER RING TONES"
You will need a Registry Editor like Total Commander 2 or PHM Regedit
Hope this helps
Javahater,
Have been trying above solution for about an hour, seems that this solution doesn't work under WM5, or at least it doesn't make any difference if you change the folder or not (it only points to windows not windows\rings)
Will have to keep looking.

AGREED !! I've got WM2003SE tried the steps mentioned http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Wizard_Tweaks no use.......it still picks up the default folder from \windows\rings, where as I am pointing it towards \Storage Card\Sound\ not working
ok just double checked.....in sounds and notifications options it goes to \windows\rings folder.....but I have o2 plus installed as well...and in o2 plus sounds and notifications options it points me to \Storage Card\Sound any ideas ?
Ezzkht,
Happy t worked for you, can't say the same for me.
Well it is getting more and more weird, when I look in my registry it only points to \windows\ not even \windows\rings\, despite this it still manages to pick up ringtones/sounds in the rings directory, and all sound files placed in the root of the SD Card(go figure).
I'm out of ideas right now, but am still looking for a solution and will be back if I find one.
I just used Resco Explorer with the registry editor add-in.
It worked with me without a soft-reset!
What device do you have, Mike?
Maybe some nice sounds
Hello everyone!
It's a little bit off topic, a little bit not
My advice: SD card is not really a good place for sounds, at least in my case. Why? Sometimes it happened that when I got a phone call, instead of my nice ringtone I've heard the standard one. I think it has sth to do with powering up SD card while changing from standby mode. It's just my impression.
Secondly: I'm looking for some nice SMS ringtones, not the funky ones... I'm getting a lot of messages and it's really boring if you hear "Heeeeellooooo! Your message is coooooomingggg!" every now and then. I will appreciate if you could share your ringtone with me

Changing Sounds of Notifications - such as "Message Sen

I searched the registry, found nothing, searched through some folders and found nothing either.
So as the subject says, is it possible to change these types of sounds? I've got some great sounds in mind. E.g. the sonic the hedgehog ring, for this event in particular.
... For new text I have the sonic 2 - 1 up sound
If you could help that would be great!
Hay there, yep this can be done, thou first you need the new message or notifcation clip to be a .wav file type, so you need to convert the items to wav first.
Once you done that place the newly converted wav file into the windows folder, not into windows>rings like you would do for ringtones.
Then goto settings, and notifcation and sound menu and select the new one there.
Hope this helps.
Ooo
I've been trying to figure this out, how could I change the sound that plays in my ear for callwaiting? lol i feel stupid because I can't figure this out!!!
Thanks!
Yup, I am not too happy in this realm as well. My busy tone sounds like a Modem that is trying to handshake, and that is when it decides that it is going to alert me. I would really like to swap out some of that stuff.
I beleive my expertise will come in handy here
There are many sounds which can be changed which ARE NOT visible in the "Sounds And Notifications" control panel. They can be accessed by pointing your reg editor of choice to...
"HKey_Current_User\ControlPanel\Sounds"
We'll take the busy tone as an example...
Navigate to "HKey_Current_User\ControlPanel\Sounds\BusyTone"
In there you'll see:
(Default)..................(value not set)
Catagory..................InCall
Script.......................apr
Sound......................HTCBusy.wav
Change the sound one to any file on your pda. (Must be an mp3 or a wave file) (Include the full path if the sound file isn't in "/windows") The changes should take effect immediately, if they don't you've not done it correctly...
Hope this helps you all...
Note: To my knowledge, you can't change the message sent tone, sorry...

Custom Sounds for Text Messages etc.

Guys,
My apologies if this has been covered before.... Only I've had a really bad day in Theatre (I lost a loving, warm and friendly aged Lady earlier) and all I want to do now is pack up for today and go home.
So.... I have a few custom sounds in .wma format that I've placed into Windows/Rings and would like to use these for my Text Messages, Email Alerts etc.
Trouble is the Sounds & Notifications list does not show these in the drop down list of available sounds.
If I select Phone they do show but any of the others and they are not displayed.
Therefore, the question being ~ Is there any way to have these custom sounds displayed and readily available for my Phone?
Thanks in advance.
Ringtones need to be be in the Rings folder.
Don't know why but anything else needs to be in the Windows folder to appear.
Here is one from Python Holy Grail that I find good.

That is quite strange...... All my Ringtones are located in Windows/Rings.
I don't have a folder named Rings in the root.
Thanks for the Monty Python... appreciated.
Apologies, let me clarify.
Ringtones in Windows\Rings
All others Windows\
Hope thats clearer.
My Sounds and Notifications show all the wav files in the windows directory, plus any wav/mp3/wma in My Documents (device or storage card).

Yes thanks... Got it now.
I've moved them into the Windows folder and they now work.
It's quite confusing when we mention ring tones and basically the ones I will be using are a ring tone.
But now I can see what you mean.... The default ring tones are in the Windows/Rings.
All other ring tones are in the Windows main folder.
Thanks.

Cheers for the contribution..... Didn't appreciate you could use .mp3 as well.
Thanks.
Carrying this forward, is there any way we can change the 'tap' sound?
The iPhone sound is very nice when you tap the screen but the custom HTC one is awful
