A lot of PPC users have noticed on all the PPC boards that an already-usable preliminary version of the Opera browser has become available. As it's Java MIDP-based, people had serious problems with installing/running it. This is why (I'm a Java guru, so, I made it work in some seconds) I decided to write a tutorial and, being an avid PPC browser and compression service user, also a quick review of the app, comparing it to the other Pocket PC Web browsers.
1, download the IBM J9 (you can also give a try to the CrEme JVM (see the above-linked Java article) - I haven't tested Opera with that JVM. With the IBM J9, it's woking just great). Go here, choose the link "Trial: IBM Workplace Client Technology, Micro Edition 5.7" and navigate thru the 3 pages, by loging in / registering with IBM. On the third page, scroll down to "WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment MIDP 2.0 for Windows Mobile 2003" and download it.
Alternatively, you can download the same package from Handango, but it's much bigger in size than the one at IBM, so, you may want to stick to the latter.
Note that the HTC PDA + mobile combo has its own MIDP JVM (see the XDA-Developers thread). It's not available for non-HTC branded devices, however (AFAIK!), so, you'll need to stick to third-party solutions (and it's pretty futile to go to http://www.dmmh.nl/xda/files/ , as recommended in the XDA-Developers thread, to look for the JVM).
Install (you may want to install it on a storage card) and everything will be OK. (Contrary to what most people say, you will NOT need to download WebSphere Studio Device Developer in its entirety! The Handango download may also include parts of it; hence the size.)
2, get Opera from here - sorry, as I was told this distro isn't necessarily legal (even if it's an early beta version, which may be much worse than the final), I've removed the direct link to it.
3, if/once you have Winrar on your PC, just enter winrar opera-mini.rar. Click the 'Extract' icon in Winrar and press Enter. The files will be extracted in a directory named opera-mini.
4, transfer the files Opera_Mini_low.jad and Opera_Mini_low.jar to your PPC; to, say, \My Documents
5, invoke File Explorer on the PDA, and click Opera_Mini_low.jad (the smaller file).
6, IBM J9 will automatically be invoked and the MIDLET installation started; just keep pressing OK/Yes:

7, after this, highlight Opera at the top:
and press the Launch button at the top. Opra will be started and some Noregian text displayed; just click OK in the lower left corner.
8, go to Meny/Verktøy/Innstillinger
and click the Norsk at the bottom of the list in the top of the window. Choose English from the top of the list.
Click Lagre.
9, now, you can start browsing. You'll get used to the interface very fast. It's pretty different from other browsers (there're no
Some remarks:
- it's astonishingly fast, especially at rendering small images, which has always been one of the weakest point of PIE
- don't be afraid of the lack of 'traditional' form components. Everything is a simple text field here, even text areas, as can be seen in the following screenshot:
- if you install opera.ja* instead of Opera_Mini_low.ja*, it won't be able to communicate with the server, for some reasons (dunno why; didn't really have the time to track the cause for the bug. The 'full' version isn't much better than the 'basic' - it has a graphical command bar and - pretty slow - character antialiasing features. Upon popular request, I may look into the problem, even on the Java source level. Let me know if you want it to work.)
- upon the first request, it asks whether it should use the "airtime". Just leave the default 'Yes' intact:
- use some kind of task manager to return to the app (for example, the built-in Task Switcher in Spb Pocket Plus 3.0 - incidentally, if you use it, you may want to relocate it from the RAM - see this thread) if you minimize the J9 window by mistake
- native VGA mode works great:
- dynamic Landscape orientation change doesn't work with IBM J9; just restart J9 in Landscape and everything will be OK
- everything is one column-only, but still very nice to read, much nicer than the output of, say, Skweezer or its online alternatives. And the speed difference is just breathtaking!
- JavaScript support is good; however, don't expect Google Maps to run, however
- inter-session cookie handling is good; they are stored in \My Documents\recordStores
- I couldn't spot any kind of local caching (Thunderhawk/Minimo doesn't use any local cache either)
- there is no Java support either
- no in-page find, not even text select/copy. Copy/paste works great in text fields, though.
- don't try to force the two IBM J9 EXE files (IBM MIDP20\bin\emulator.exe / IBM MIDP20\bin\j9midp20.exe) into forced VGA. It'll result in the disappearing of the upper/lower bar; the lower bar being the command bar with buttons to use, you won't be able to use the app at all:
10, upon subsequent starts, you don't need to re-click the jad file again; just run "MIDLet HQ" and go to step 7 above.
I've tested it on both WM2003 (iPAQ 2210) and WM2003SE (PL720) with J9; works great so far. Even in its current form, this application is great and, despite its being Java-based, incredibly fast.
You may also want to read my article on the other browsers available and the above-mentioned Reducing Internet bandwidth usage on the Pocket PC - A complete roundup & comparison of Toonel, OnSpeed, Skweezer, WebWarper and the like so that you can compare. Especially compared to the solutions (Skweezer et al) in the latter category does Opera excel.
not tested yet, but you did pretty nice job! thanks

Yup, removed them.
Since this is in the Magician section of the forum, here is how I did it on mine:
I installed the Java Midlet Manager that was in my Extended ROM untill I did the Big Storage thing. If you still have an Extended ROM instead op Big Storage, then you don't need to install this one. I just downloaded it from the ftp and installed it on my MDA Compact. Then I downloaded the Opera-mini.rar, unrarred it on my pc, copied the 4 files to my Magician's storage and opened the Opera_mini_low.jad. Opera was installed and every time I open my Midlet Manager, Opera is there. One click and it gets started.
Maybe this is easier then installing the IBM solution? Perhaps I am way off, but installation like this seems much easier to me...

Yup, I've also emphasized this. This article is just a cross-post of a post I've also posted to other PPC forums - this is why it doesn't contain much Magician-related stuff. (I know - I should have posted this in a generic forum here too and not "just" to the Magician forum.)
Not working in landscape?
I get some weird screen draw on the right hand side?
CAB installer IBM Workplace Client Technology?
Is there a CAB installer IBM Workplace Client Technology, Micro Edition 5.7 as the 40mb installer does not seem to install on my machine?

Since i'm one of the official Opera translators (i translate the italian version for windows, unix, series60, ezx, archos, opera mini, etc) i'd like to point out that the version we're talking about is called Opera Mini.
Opera Mini is a java application (or midlet, i'm not a Java guru!) intended to run on any MIDlet-capable mobile device out there (most mobiles are). The final official (and localized) release will be available very soon (i've been translating it in these last days). As Menneisyys correctly pointed out, there exist two versions: a low-mem and a high-mem one. I think the high-mem should work on our magician (the low-mem is intended for those slow and memory-limited mobiles) however the beta currently available may have some problem (or, maybe, the MIDlet manager you're using).
Now, I wish to make clear that Opera for PocketPC is a completely different product from Opera Mini. It'll be a PPC native program and will be released soon after (AFAIK) Opera Mini. I wasn't able to get more information about it (but i'm still trying!), so I cannot say whether it'll be WM 2003 SE compatible or it'll run on WM 5 only.
Opera for PocketPC will be ways better than Opera Mini and won't require any MIDlet manager (it's not a Java application!). From this point of view, it'll be more similar to Opera for smartphones or Opera for Series60 (Nokia, Symbian) than to Opera Mini.
As soon as i'll know more about Opera for PPC, i'll keep u informed.
Bye bye,
Isidoro
Opera8.5 for WM2005 is available now.So i guess the 2003 version is not far...
Available for the smartphone ...the WM5.0 and 2003 versions on their way according to website....you can try the beta version however

hello to all, i have just discovered this site and have as a result got the s200, WOW, all the knowledge and info here is amazing, thanks to all...!!
Regarding the .rar extension file for the PPC programmes, i have downloaded it but what are the instructions for a newbie such as myself, how can i chck for viruses and what are the steps i need to trf prgrms to S200? I did a search and have d/loaded winrar from downloads.com, what now??
Thnx to all,

according to the unwritten, but still applying rules of every discussion forum and/or community which are used to discuss only legal things everybody should know, that this archive file mostly contains cracked warez and/or serial numbers for the provided software.
So the offer, download and/or use of this archive file is definitly illegal and the moderators should think about to delete this file/post/thread.
Remember to install linux on your pda if you want to use really free software instead of using such cracked warez or serial numbers which is really not fair.
Linux can be installed on Prophet ?
How to ? I know its supports ARM processor but no idea about bootloader & stuff.

I don't think such drastic measures are required.
A) There are linux versions only for certain models of PDAs.
B) It's not as simple as installing on desktop PC so it's definitely not for average user.
C) There are sites like www.pocketpcfreeware.com that offer thouthands of legally free apps for PDAs.
a in yul:
Any legal / trustworthy software comes with an installer which runs on your PC and automatically installs the app to your device (it has to be synchronized).
It is still a good idea to have an antivirus on your PC (not so good to have one on your PDA) such as Norton or Kaspersky to check any file you download.
Finlay, many free apps come simply as a cab file. You need to copy that to your device, open file explorer and click on the file to install the software.
Any way, I think you should stay away from this rar. Even if you don't care whether the software you use is legal or not, downloads like this often contain very nasty surprises that may damage you PC.
The weird thing is, whats Skype doing on that list???
The thing with linux on the prophet was more a little joke than a serious note.
I'm one of the greatest linux defender or better advocat and I'm using absolutly no windows anymore now since nearly seven years.
Now I've bought this XDA Neo three weeks ago and I'm really sad that I now have a windows again... but well, that doesn't really matter as long as it works. And it works until now.
And I've not seen any blue screen until now.
But there was one little serious sidenote:
The only chance to get really free software (which doesn't mean gratis or free of charge at all) is to use Linux as OS and to install OpenSource software which is distributed under the GPL(2).
thanks a bunch...

Since we got into the whole linux issue:
1) Open source is not limited to linux apps. Two great examples of it for Windows Mobile devices are TCPMP (video player that supports many formats including divx5) and Calendar Plus (a powerful today plugin with many options)
2) Linux on PDAs may not be as developed as on PC, but it is certainly not a joke (I understand you were joking, but there is some serious development being done). You may want to look here:

Granted, there isn't a working linux installation for the Prophet (AFAIK) but maybe one day.

Well, sure it isn't limited only to linux or linux apps.
But You'll not be able to build a complete system with all needed apps just only with free opensource apps on windows (doesn't matter which version) or any other operation system, except linux/unix.
You'll have to pay at least for the operation system itself.
But sure, I know what you mean and I'm with you. There's many free software for other operating systems too.

yepp, I know that there are several projects which are trying to port linux to pdas. And as soon as there's a nearly useable version which runs on the prophet, I'll be the very first person who'll try it out.
Hope you all follow the General forum in here ;-) If you don’t, you may not have read my latest major roundup you will definitely be interested in: the Windows Mobile Web Browsing Bible, fully updated to the latest Web browsers (DeepFish, Opera Mobile 8.65, NetFront 3.4, WM6 Internet Explorer etc.) . Make sure you don’t miss it!

Many thanks, Menneisyys, I will have a gander now
That is a phenomenal review!
Thanks guys!
In the meantime, I've updated the article; I still haven't cross-posted it here because of the tremendous need for slicing it up; therefore, the new version is at http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=1828&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 .
If you haven't done so as yet, DO check it out, it'll answer ALL your question about Web browsing on Windows Mobile.
UPDATE (04/05/2007): Added a new row on Address bar (history / deletion / autocomplete), with a lot of screenshots; other minor changes in the chart.
In addition to yesterday's cleaning up the English & additional proofreading and today's adding a new row on the Address Bar history (deletion) / autocompletion, I've slightly modified the Opera Mobile-related information in the chart of the article, based on ResearchWizard's excellent feedback. (BTW, his Opera Mobile guide is just excellent and really worth checking out (alternative, direct link here)).
BTW, many have asked why there's neither "Verdict" nor "Most recommended" section in the Bible. The answer is very simple: while I, personally, consider Opera Mobile 8.65 the best browser closely followed by the WM6 (or, at least, WM5 AKU2+ - previous versions were 50% slower to load pages and, therefore, I wouldn't really be able to return to using them) IEM equipped with PIEPlus 2.2 if the bad JavaScript / non-existing AJAX support and the relatively high memory usage aren't a problem.
However, as you may have drastically different requirements, the above may not be the right solution for you. For example, you can ONLY use free software because, for example, you need the cheapest solution for enterprise-wide deployment, which means you'll need to cast a glance at Webby, Minimo or, probably the best free alternative, Opera Mini. Or, alternatively, you want to keep the original page layout on your low-resolution QVGA model; then, the first browser you should check out is Thunderhawk (not taking DeepFish into account).
That is, there was a reason I didn't (and still don't) provide a quick recommendation. There are a LOT of factors you need to consider when selecting your browser of your choice. You WILL want to thoroughly examine the feature / comparison chart, thoroughly compare each feature and consider whether the lack of a given feature is a showstopper for you or not. Providing a some-sentence-recommendation like ""go for Minimo if you need a free and, therefore, easily mass-deployable browser and memory consumption isn't an issue", "go for Opera Mini if you need minimal memory consumption, speed and also being free" or "stay with PIE if you don't need strong JavaScript / AJAX / CSS support and multitabs but want a free, dependable browser"" would have been an oversimplification.
I felt it useless to try to even replicate the information available in the comparison / feature chart in a Verdict section - there's simply too much information, I would have ended up pages on this "simple" subject. This is why I’ve left it out altogether – you’ll need to consult the chart so that you can make an educated, informed decision..
Updated the chart with Thunderhawk-related information. This means there are no question marks in the Thunderhawk-specific column any more. I've also provided several screenshots of Thunderhawk in action. Thanks to the Bitstream folks for providing me access to their service!
BTW, the article has been frontpaged by Pocket PC Thoughts in the meantime.
I’ve just posted a brand new Radar article, with a lot of new screenshots, to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1209974
PPCT frontpage; Just Another Mobile Monday frontpage
Finally, I can not stress and emphasize enough: if you have a specific need but lack the time to fully scrutinize the chart, use in-page searching (Ctrl-F) to quickly find the compatibility information you need. For example, if you want to know Flash, AJAX or JavaScript compliance, just use the word in question (for example "Flash") as the search expression and you'll really quickly find out which chart row discusses the given question.

The browser is WM5+ only (no WM2003(SE) support, sorry) and is NOT available for download officially; it’s shipped with some Windows Mobile models as is the case on other mobile platforms (for example, Palm OS).
It’s a direct (non central server-based) Web browser with REALLY excellent dynamic zooming / panning capabilities (regarding them, it’s the best of all Windows Mobile browsers) and built-in PDF, MS Excel / MS Word / MS PowerPoint and text reader. That is, it’s pretty much understandable why Palm OS users praise it so much.
Unfortunately, it also has its shortcomings; for example, the lack of a multi-tabbed architecture (as is the case with DeepFish / Thunderhawk and, of course, PIE without a third-party add-on), lack of file up/download capabilities, total lack of local caching, Ajax / Flash / Java / decent JavaScript support etc. In addition, sometimes it’s just painfully slow to download stuff, particularly with Yahoo Mail and for example the AximSite forums. That is, if you can’t stand its lack speed (with some pages – with other pages, it has no problems at all), you’ll want to look elsewhere.
Make sure you thoroughly check out the brand new column in the comparison chart of the Windows Mobile Web Browser Bible for more information to see how it compares to the alternate browsers. The chart contains a LOT of screenshots showing the Picsel browser in action.

Total newbie question but I have been browsing everywhere. is pie plus something I have to purchase or is there an addon that I can use from the xda developers crew. My reason for asking is I just went to wm6 on my mda pro, but I can no longer hit download links on certain sites.
cheers if any one can help.

There are no free add-ons from XDA-Dev people. PIEPlus, however, won't help with these problems.
Can you give me an exact URL so that I can check why it doesn't work?
UPDATE (11/12/2007): the final version of Opera Mini 4 has been released. UPDATE (02/01/2008):
[*]I, after more than a week’s waiting (see my previous post HERE), still haven’t received any feedback from the Strategy Analytics Inc. folks regarding the lack of Opera Mini in their 5-Star Safari Leads Mobile Browsing Experience, which, in many Windows Mobile users’ (including me) opinion, is the most useful / quickest Web browser for the Windows Mobile platform. And, for other mobile platforms too – on my Symbian Nokia N95 and BlackBerry 8800, I almost exclusively use this browser to access the Web. Not including it in the test makes the entire report pretty hard to depend on – it’s like completely ignoring, for example, Ferrari (a top-performing car) when evaluating the cars of Formula-1.
And, of course, I’ve already elaborated on the bad ranking of Nokia Web (running on Symbian S60 3rd edition devices – that is, NOT on Windows Mobile) and, particularly, Opera Mobile (running on all major mobile platforms). Again and again, if you do learn the dialpad shortcuts and/or, with Opera Mobile running on a dialpad-less Pocket PC, use a third-party tool to assign its key functionalities (accessing favorites, current tabs, back etc.) to Pocket PC hardware buttons, they both become quicker and easier to operate than Internet Explorer. It’s clearly at this point (in addition to the lack of Opera Mini) that Strategy Analytics Inc.’s report severely lacks – it’s evident the test folks didn’t really make an attempt at learning the dialpad shortcuts / configure Opera Mobile for easy and much quicker access / use.
[*]Still as far as Windows Mobile and Symbian are concerned, a brand-new Web browser, Skyfire has been released. See some of the related threads HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE (a preview) and HERE. I, as I’m located in Europe, still haven’t had the choice to test it (it's, currently, only available for US residents).
Based on the first reports, it’s based on a similar architecture than Microsoft’s, for the time being, discontinued DeepFish (RIP!) and Thunderhawk’s Java applet emulation. That is, it, in practice, generates an image of the page on the server and transfers this to the client – there isn’t local HTML (?) / Flash parsing / execution on the client side at all. This has both pros and cons, as has already been explained in my Web Browsing Bible.
I REALLY hope Skyfire is WAY better implemented than DeepFish (or Thunderhawk's applet emulation). DeepFish was really slow – not only because its beta servers were, generally, really overloaded, but also because it was implemented using the slowish Compact Framework, as opposed to the much faster Win32 API. Unfortunately, Thunderhawk’s (remote, image transfer-based) Java applet emulation isn’t really capable of emulating running it on the local mobile either. Therefore, I seriously doubt you’ll be able to, say, play fast Flash action games under Skyfire – you’ll still need a local Flash interpreter (only available Opera Mobile or Internet Explorer - and, also, NetFront, but the latter has a pretty buggy and definitely less compatible Flash engine) for that.
I’ll meet the Skyfire folks at Barcelona; hope I’ll be able to play with their browser a bit so that I can quickly test its usability, small screen-friendliness (for example, does it have the same, excellent text boundary recognition engine than that of Opera Mini in full layout mode) and Web standards compliance.

Features:
- Can be uninstalled
- Installs to SD/DEVICE
- Included Ad-blocking filter
- Default homepage set to Google
- Increased disk cache size to 20 MB
- Made the Zoom and Launch buttons 50% transparent
- Replaced the "htc" loading image with build 2392's image
- Fixed the "installation unsucessfull" problem on some devices by removing setup.dll and adding its functions to _setup.xml
Notes:
- Hardware keyboard is reportedly working on Touch Pro/HD but is buggy on Xperia and a few others.
- If you're upgrading from build 2XXX or 19XX,I suggest using this cab over the upgrade version (which just replaces the two Opera exes) as this build contains new features like Vibration and Strength Clicks, which needs the supporting registry entries to work properly. There are also a few minor changes in Opera.ini and other files. Also, a few SD version cabs posted here of earlier builds are buggy (incorrect paths of a few files/registries) so I recommend installing this version for a complete (cooking bugs free) experience.
- As always, please backup your existing Opera/device before installing.
- Tested on WM5 QVGA PPC. (200MHz, 42 MB)
A few interesting tweaks:
- To prevent Opera from continuing to run in the background even after you close it, change the value of this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Opera\Preload
Name: RealExit
- For vibration support (untested)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Opera\Defaults
Name: VibrationEnabled
\Windows\Opera9\Opera.ini tweaks:
- If you're not satisfied with the default zoom levels, tweak these values:
Code:
[Adaptive Zoom]
Maximum Zoom=
Minimum Zoom=
Minimum Overview Zoom=
- To increase the number of tabs, edit the value below:
Code:
[User Prefs]
Maximum Allowed Tabs=
FAQ:
1) Flash Support?
Flash isn't working. I've yet to fully try out all tricks though, but don't expect a Flash build anytime soon.
2) Uninstall old version?
Not necessary. The installer should automatically remove any older builds.
3) Difference between 15202 and 15086?
Nothing significant (aka bugfixes or N/A)
4) Improvements in build 15XXX since 2XXX?
Better Performance (Reported, not measured)
Vibration Support (Not tested)
Strength Clicks (Double taps? Pressure taps? Not sure about this one.)
Scroll Wheel Zoom
5) Help! Opera's not installing / starting
Before installing, terminate Opera9.exe using a process manager such as in SKTools
A softreset before and after installing helps
Uninstall all existing versions, delete Opera files from \Application Data\, \Windows\, \Program Files\ and run a registry cleaner
If your device has less memory, softreset, then exit all background apps and thirdparty processes (MobileShell/Winterface/etc), compact memory heaps and try launching
Some devices may report an unsucessfull install, but try launching Opera and check if the new version was installed
Troubleshooting:
Please mention the following details:
Device/OS/software specs.
Clean or upgrade install. If upgraded, which was the earlier build, etc.
Which CAB(s) you tried

thanks. im going to wait around for confirmed flash support tho.
you say youre trying to get support for flash.. does that mean it is a matter of updating the cabs again.. so shouldnt we potentially just wait til that happens?
idk why ppl are so concerned abut flash. First of all flash is flash lite and its a beta at that so its not ideal. neither is watching an embedded video in the browser. so i dont see much of a need for the big stink about having it at this point in time.
and i agree htctoucher, theres obviously a reason flash wasnt implemented any official Opera build yet on any device or their beta on their site- probably because Flash isnt ready, so i dont see why a half-baked beta flash lite build is so important to people.
Adobe is brining Flash 10 to mobiles shortly so im sure at some point Opera will officially support it
i think at this point having the best Opera build we can trumps flash by a mile. if people want a good way to do flash, skyfire is the best solution
dexter, thanks a lot for this update. Can you please upload only the Opera9.exe and OperaL.exe files for VGA? (and i'm sure QVGA will be useful for someone)
Thanks a lot.

i was about to say..... opera... since it released the beta , not the "leaked htc, sharp, samsung builds, that they will not enable plugins in the beta builds... this is common knowledge....
as for the flash lite..... it was working pretty good in older builds of opera, and was even working even better on Internet Explorer Mobile 6 from the released emulator images some released a .cab for.....
i dont see complete flash 10 support ever coming to window mobile, but i do note the announcement that they are "looking into" bringing flash 10 to mobile devices in November .. but flash i too much of a system resource hog atm..
as far as i know flash lite 3 is all there releasing any time soon
and all flash lite 3 really is , is like the early builds of flash version 9 on desktops... which only supported the FLV standard, and not newer builds that support MP4 and .mov streaming....
all in all, i dont think any decent version of flash will be available for windows mobile any time soon... it is a crippled out of date OS.... but i wont bash on Microsoft too much... one of the reasons the IPhoney doesn't have it on there is because it consumes to many system resources.... and apple doesn't just want flash lite, they want the full version of flash.... that wont happen any time soon eiter

Updated exes have been posted by cityhunter71 over here.
vibrate function doesnt seem to be working.. i dont really see much improvement over 2808..
my main gripe with recent versions is that when you are typing in a box (like in xda) when your typing goes out of the screen the screen doesnt move to show you what you are typing.. really makes it inconvenient to type.. previous verdions used to do this
also.. typing is no where near as good as in browsers like netfront.. pcm suggestion barely works in opera while it is near flawless in netfront
i was looking forward to this being implemented again in newer builds.. but even in these havent seen it.. or are other people having different experiences?
would love to know if somehow i could enable this very wishful thinking..

I hate this too, I'm online with my Diamond almost all the time and typing typing in forums is a pain because of this issue...
I installed this on my XV6850 (Verizon Touch Pro) w/ stock ROM. I used the full install (not the upgrade) because Opera was included in the original ROM. Couple of notes:
1. I installed the SD version, but it did not install on my memory card. I found the new files in the Windows folder on my device.
2. This seems to have totally hosed my Compact Qwerty touch keyboard. It only types numbers, no letters, not just within Opera, but also if I try to use it to compose messages.
3. This is not uninstallable.
4. I tried to install Build 2392 over this version, but Compact Qwerty still doesn't work.
I installed the VGA standard version over the 15086.
Again, this version on the end of installation gave me an uninstalled, but About reports version 15202
Also, it's not uninstallable.
I modified the number of max tabs in opera.ini but still I can only have 3 tabs. I found a file, opera1.ini, I rename it and now I can add more tabs...

I know exactly what you're talking about, I noticed that problem on a number of previous builds. the funny thing is it only happens at xda!
but the way I setup my opera causes the text/reply field when zoomed to only fit the screen width. therefore I don't suffer from that. sometimes when I zoom in the reply field it's too big so I zoom out and zoom back on again. I have a VGA device:
I set my max zoom = 145, min zoom = 80 and in settings=> display I set font size to large.
this works for me and it has been working for me since 3 or 4 builds ago. I find that if I don't set font size to large it doesn't work. hopes this helps.
also.. typing is no where near as good as in browsers like netfront.. pcm suggestion barely works in opera while it is near flawless in netfront

to tell you the truth, I hold opera 10 bars above netfront. to me opera is way more functional, I find it very frustrating to scroll and pan in netfront. I can tweak the hell out of opera, I remember when it just came out and didn't support wordwrap I was able to implement it myself through the CSS files. I don't use flash in my opera because it's a resource hog, videos auto play and causes the page to move really slow, it causes opera to act sporadic and crashes the browser.
if you're talking about the hardware keyboard problem try using a software keyboard, I use TouchPal. I haven't used my HK keys in almost a year now. I find that I type almost 2 times faster than I would on a hardware keyboard.
just my 10cents, looking back for my 8cents change.

this happens because you had a previous build that cannot be uninstalled, my guess is the 2545 build (yeah it got me too, I had to hard reset to get rid of it). and yes even though it says it was unsuccessful it still installed the major pieces, so technically you're running the new build so you shouldn't worry too much about that.

I had stock Opera on my Touch HD and also got the "installation unsuccessful" thingie.
No big deal except the fact that it didn't appear in the Remove programs list and can't be uninstalled.
So I would advise to copy \Windows\Opera9.exe, \Windows\OperaL.exe, \Windows\Opera9 folder and HKLM\Software\Opera somewhere to be able to roll back just in case.
Otherwise, it's an excellent build, blazing fast, properly rotates dialogs unlike 2808 and works just fine for me so far - thanks for posting this!

On Touch HD, when you tap a link or one of the corner fullscreen mode buttons (i.e. zoom and exit full screen), there's a short vibration to confirm. It still works in this build.
However, the stock HD version of Opera also used to vibrate on double tapping the screen to zoom in and out. In this build it doesn't. Not a big loss, just to point out what's going on.

My guess is that it's a threshold to either avoid accidental taps or to trigger mouseover event needed to open some dropdown menus. Something is definitely needed for the latter on some sites. Now you can imitate mouseover by tapping a link in the overview mode (something considered by many as a bug). Doesn't seem to work here.
Zooming with scroll wheel is not working on my polaris. Same as in all previus releases! Or do i have to change some reg-keys?

alternate download for opera cabs 15086 and 15200
opera is really starting to P me off..
why are newer builds so much more jumpy? why does the screen not move with you when you type?
the first issue makes it a b**** to surf the internet cuz the screen wont move where you want it to move until the page has completely loaded which takes kind of a while after enough of it has loaded for you to want to pan!
come on opera! starting to wonder what they are focusing on...
really hope they bring back features that made this browser so easy to use from earlier builds..

I hear you on that. but usually I I can scroll and pan once the page is over 50% loaded.
keep in mind that this is not an easy job they're doing, and it's still in beta. when they implement new things in the CSS engine of course it's gonna break something, so they have to see what is broken then go over it and try to fix it. the 2808 build was loaded with CSS issues but this build seems to scour most of them away.
the reason why the page is jumping all over the place when you try to move it before the page is loaded is because opera is still interpreting the page.
I have no gripes with that, just let the page load over 50% or so before you try to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page . also try enabling smooth scrolling.
I have tried it. It is much fast than 2392.
[APP] QetriX: Universal data manager BETA incl. Best Freeware "AppStore-like" project
Allow me to introduce my first-born child, QetriX.
QetriX (Q3X) is universal server-client data manager for .NET (Compact) Framework 2.0+ and WM2003+ (all resolutions). Client program works in both Win and WM (as well as under Mono - Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris...). It can handle almost every data which could be distributed as XML, as well as some existing XML files (e.g. RSS). As you can see on screenshots, pictures and light formating and styles are supported.
Communication with server is standard HTTP POST and GET.
You can take a look to Google-Translated app homepage. Project is language independent, but I'm from Czech republic so I use mostly Czech language.
Well, I tried to define a new web-browsing data-orientated paradigm. There are a lot of useless information and wasted megabytes on the internet and I'm sick of it ;-) The client program behaves like specific-data browser.

The idea was to define controls in one (form) XML and data in another XML, one form could be used for multiple data. Main focus was to simplicity, efficiencty and low data transfer (ZIP packing supported, JSON support in progress , work with QetriX is very similar to regular web applications.
Each of downloaded file is stored as cache for further usage. You can define "expiration" for images, data or forms for re-download after this date. I'm planning to release complete XML and app specification, but it takes much more time than programming itself
Configuration is both server and local (for corporate and safety reasons server definitions are preferred). In config file you can set even Main Menu items. You can notice, on screenshots the menu isn't the same all the time. Menu commands as well as form controls uses built-in commands (like "file open xy.q3x") and built-in timer for repeated actions or timing. I tried to make support for "internal" calculations for e.g. currency convertor without sending data to server to do the math.
It's possible to open file from both server and device's memory. It has a "suggest" feature to avoid long searching for desired file. Suggested files are in app directory, in working directory, in MRUDs and even provided by defined online service (especially URL addresses). "Suggest" could be used for any TextBox on form as well. (open-file suggest currently works only with online service so it's turned off right now, sorry for any inconvenience
You can submit one page to server or whole data file. You can even save the data file to device's memory (offline) and send it to the server later. Even it's desired to be server-client, you can use the program without any server.
I tried to implement finger-friendly GUI, you can use finger-scroll (only on Form itself and pictures, where applicable methods are supported by .NET CF) and easy-to-aim "fingerMenu" with configurable buttons.
Server side could be one PHP script, demonstration script with list/insert/update ability has 83 lines and less than 3 kB. I wrote a simple client for web browser that can work with forms and data, it's still very dirty but basically it works ;-)
Because I wanted to keep WM2003 supported and I didn't want to take care of two different versions of the same program, I wrote additional program called "Q3X Aid". It adds support for GPS, GSM Cell ID and Camera. Coordinates are transferred via XML file and if the GPS is enabled and required, client program loads coordinates from this file and uses in request.
Now I use it as:
Shopping list
Twitter client
E-mail client
To-Do list
Calendar
Blog management
Tic-tac-toe game
Now about the "Best Freeware AppStore-like" project:
I know there are many servers for PPC freeware, but It's hard to choose the "best" piece of software. I know everyone wants different features, but sometimes you find bad, buggy or obsolete programs. So I decided to write a simple implementation for QetriX with 1-click install ability (download and run CAB) and current WM version detection (for offering apps and games right for your device).
Now it's ready on my localhost, so I'm building a database of best freeware apps and games. You can contribute, the page is in both czech and english language.
I noticed you help to improve programs so I'm offering work-in-progress beta version. Any bugreport, suggestion or idea warmly welcomed.
I have difficulties to make CAB so please prefer ZIP instead After launching program I predefined two URLs, I recommend "...kraje-cr/" (list of counties in CZ), because it's very simple. The other (...psc/) is a list of all ZIP codes in CZ in very large data file.
After download the form and data file, a link to local file will apper in the MRUD list too, for further usage. You can access the "Open" interface by click to "Panel > Open".
I hope the program is simple and intuitive so you probably don't need a manual. If so, just let me know and I'll try to write one, in english.
Tested on: HP iPAQ 1940 (WM2003), HTC Touch Pro (WM6.1), WinXP SP3
It has much more features (however smugly it looks , I just wanted to wrote the "core".
Please comment and write feedbacks. Thank you!
Super cool!
Hi
Super cool project! I have a similar one going called GSlide (www.GSlide.mobi).
My framework is based around the concept that components (be it remote servers, exe files or system services) communicate using a call/callback pattern. It uses JSON for object state and xml-rpc for method calls.
Maybe we can come up with something cool together? As i have the finger friendly GUI
I must say that its been very hard to find people who are interested in these kind of projects on this forum...
Ciao
Lars
Hi! GSlide is really an Eye-Candy, what's my biggest concerns about QetriX, which looks so old-school! However my approach is much more for data management where nice GUI is not required, but people likes it so it's half of success...
Do you have more screenshots of it's implementations? I'm gathering inspiration Piano looks great!
And I didn't know the editor, thanks I'll add it to my list of "Best Freeware".
Hi again,
My original concept was actually that any form of structured data can be iterated through lists. I think we have the same basic idea here. A generic finger friendly GUI for any kind of data format.
I will try your app today

Hmm. Though it will be better to categorise all supported games and apps for gene in one single section. The idea is to place all the apps recommended by Gene Users in one thread which they have used and found to be working. The objective is to index all apps and games running smoothly on gene and hopefully with sufficient participation the program list will be smooth and rewarding for particularly Newbies to the Forum.
If two more people people think unnecessary please comment. i will ask MODs to delete this thread. Let's keep our gene forum clean.
I think its nice idea to share our fav apps with others. But I guess there was a thread similar to this earlier too.
Still a GOOD THOUGHT I belive.
nice thread dude

Look Pavan, It really drove me nuts to see that comment. For a second I was thinking, if it hurt me this much, how much the Creator of this thread was hurt. This guy has taken a serious effort to do the job and did it well.
It always drive me mad when nobody comes forward to do the task, and when one tries to do the job in his capacity, the other fellows try to criticize that by saying, "Useless", "it would have be better this way", "I could have done better", " you screwed up pal.." ... ect...
For those ppl, I have only one thing to say... F**k off you D**k Heads...
I still believe I am correct pavan...
