Hi guys,
about to be eligable for my upgrade to an Orange M500 (hopefully free!!), and was just having a look around and saw on a website a Qtek s110 on an O2 contract for £29 (£30 month tariff). I am not to bothered about moving phone companies, only that I know it is a bit of a hassle.
is it MUCH better having the 128mb of onboard ram, compared to 64?
thanks all
nickb
If the price difference is negligible, go for the 110. 128mb is better than 64mb, of course (more space for games, dictionaries etc), so your consideration is what it'll cost you.
V
i think i might then......
Nickb
where abouts are you thinking of getting the s110 for the best price in uk?

The guys over at Pocketpctechs have done it again/ already.
They're offering a replacement of 128mb for the current 64mb in our jams. 199.00 (not too bad) So for those of us who feel a little constrained by stepping down from a 128mb pocketpc phone or xda II. This might be the fastest most reasonable option.
Just when I thought Christmas was over

Greetings All.
I am finally thinking of upgrading my ancient Nokia to a Magician. Taking tightfistedness as a given, as a UK resident, my question is what is the least money I need to part with to acquire a Magician? If on pay-as-you-go, price is easily seen. But I am a little confused about tariff options: I would consider a phone on a tariff to cost:
[handset price] + [no of months] * [monthly rental]
where
[no of months] = least no of months before I can get the contract cancelled
Unfortunately, I don't actually know what this last number is with the UK companies: is it 6 months? Less? More?
Any information would be greatly appreciated, including what buyers have found to be the typical "total price" as defined above.
Regards.
I have found u a sim free himalaya for sale at Amazon. I wouldn't go for the magician myself due to it only having 64mb of ram and the himalya having 128mb of ram.

Anyway check out the link I have given you.

Thanks for the link. Is the ~£370 mark the standard, therefore for the Jam? If so, do the tariff equivalents also level about £370 after minimum contract?
And since I don't actually know this despite having lived here all my life, what _is_ the minimum contract with the various phone firms (T-Mobile, O2, Vodafone, etc.)?
ive had the xda 2 and i have recently got rid of it and got the imate jam
its alot better signal wise/ battery life wise/ size wise/ faster/ better cam
id choose it anyday over the xda2 as its just too heavy and big compared to the jam
i brought mine sim free from expansys for £407 near enough
simple to set up on o2 payg online
Look here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=15279
Contracts are usually 12 months. I have seen some 18 month contracts too.
the Jam's camera is basically the same as the xda II's anyway, I don't know why the Jams is so poor its suppoed to be 1.3MP there is so much noise in the pics they look worse than the XDA 2's.
As for the signal, the new 1.18 radio upgrade not only increases the signal of the XDA II so it's much better than before it also has increased the battery life by a considerable amount i've noticed.
Personally, i'd go for the XDA 2 any day over the JAM, I can't stand that they have halved the amount of RAM in the JAM compared to the XDA II. Size isn't everything!
id stay clear from the contracts and go onto o2 online pay as you go. 300 free texts, 1mb free gprs, works out at giving u 40mins of calls compared to contract and all for £10 / month.
sims are only like £5
So everyone who buys a phone from, say, O2 or T-Mobile absolutely _has_ to pay the 12 month contract? There is no option to, say, cancel after a minimum time and still keep the handset? Excuse my n00bness on this issue...
u dont even have to buy a contract with this one
http://s1.amazon.co.uk/exec/varzea/ts/exchange-glance/Y06Y2078550Y1436518/202-4701076-6303825
they are sim free. NO CONRACT! u can change phone and switch networks whenver u want.
just simply stick in an o2 online sim card for £5.
1.18 rom on the xda2 didnt do much for me still couldnt get signal at work
now i got my jam i got 1 bar all the time
camera quality is crap i the dark but with the new patch its improved daylight photos alot they look very clear now
and no the 64mb ram doesnt make any difference when you have a 1gb ultra SD card i use that for storage
128mb would be nice but its no problem at the moment
also you dont look like a fool with it to your ear no more lol
gaz
Agreed, s1nn0n. The only reason a contract idea is being entertained at all is the possiblity of getting a better overall deal on the Magician handset.

you have to usually have them for 12 months or sometimes 24months but you can pay the contract off upfront (pay the monthly charges all in one go)
yeah maybe.
but they are still expensive on contracts.
also the IR on the jam works just like an ipaq unlike the xda2 which doesnt do anyhting at all lol
look at the below link, id just put that in a sim free phone. works out much cheaper and a contract wont give u anywhere near the value.
THE SIM IS FREE NOW!!! lol

urs must a been dodgy thn.
mine works fine.
Thanks. In that case I shall factor [12 * monthly cost] into the price. Right. In that case I shall now scour the other threads for where good deals on the Magician are available. Thanks for the XDAII suggestion s1nn0n, but I think until the XDAII evolves further, the Jam is for me.
I bought from www.mobilejoker.de with a 1GB SD Card (65 Euros), 40 Eueos delivery and 15 Euros Cash on Delivery charge and it came to £380.
You'll get the MDA alone for less from them or Ebay's German sellers.
seriously the imate JAM is pants.
the xda II also has MP10 on it now and wm 2003 se
there really isn't much difference.
JAM is smaller but xda 2 has more memory.
That doesn't sound too bad, 27. But what on earth is this 15€ C.O.D charge?
I agree with s1nn0n in that the Jam has less memory/functions/etc.. I have computers to do my work. The phone/pda is just for simple carry-around utility.
Did anyone notice this updated jam coming out at the end of September? The specs says it has 128mb of RAM and ROM. This one could definitely support WM5. Why else would they release this thing if not to offer an upgrade? I have been reading this forum all week and I have been trying to decide what variation of the Magician I want to get. I think I may just hold out for this one.

thx for link dublin
but not integrated Wi-Fi again
Already available here in Dubai. The color is a dark shade instead of the normal white one. Looks good. I am still happy with my Big Storage Hack. Wonder if it will work there as well?
it is the same (i think) as th QTEK S110, which I got this week in the UK. Really good, though havig a little problem with charging.....

The S110 only has 64mb of Rom. It does have the 128mb of Ram, but that's not good enough for an upgrade to WM5. You have to have the larger Rom for that. The S110 is no different from a regular S100 that has had a memory upgrade. It's the Rom that makes this one unique.
You can get a normal I-Mate Jam through expansys (UK) which has been modded by PPCTECHs and has 128MB of RAM. Only £524 without contract
http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=119052
Is this for real or are expansys just testing the water? It says 128Mb in a few places but also 64Mb in the detailed text.
Looks like they cut and pasted some text from the original Jam advert
On the expansys Hong Kong website, it says "64MB ROM and 128MB RAM".
I believe it was a typo on the UK web.

That's perfectly true. Since Windows Mobile now resists in the persistent storage, more RAM is of no benefit. Quite the contrary, more RAM is of benefit more for Windows 2003 SE than for Windows Mobile 5.
I started looking around myself and found some of their sites say 128 rom and some say 64. Makes you wonder which one is true. It's probably the 64 rom, 128 ram. I got all excited there for a few minutes, but I would guess this is more likely the actual config. Oh well, I'll just keep dreaming.
I finally ordered my qtek 9000 from MMB for 950 USD including shipping
The downpoint....i live in India, and will have to wait for my sister to get here from USA...which would take me another 20 days of waiting to do
I was wondering if someone here who has a qtek 9000 tell me if its anything different at all, in terms of the rom provided....the memory it consumes on both program and storage etc.
Also, any info on how the build quality is on the outside when compared to a jj or an exec?
thanks!
<waits patiently>

JasJar
I bought the Jasjar for Rs.48,000/=. Same as QTEk with better ROm support and better resale value in India.
As far as im aware, all of the Universals are the same cosmetically, apart from colour and brandings.
Hi...
i would like to buy a HTC prophet derivate...
as far as i understood from reading the wikipage
there is no technical difference btw e.g.
dopod 818pro, qtek S200 and o2 neo...
However, I oberserved a big difference in price for the latter two in germany (around 80-100 €)... dopod is not available here...
So does anyone knows a reason for this ?
I would very much like to stick to the cheapest one (of course),
but maybe there are some minor differences...
I also read that a dopod with english rom boots faster than a Qtek version with german rom ??
However, one could change this just by loading a new ROM, right ??
thanks for clearing things up...
Marcel

They are the same apart from the badge painted on them.
Well mostly anyway. They differ only in the software each provider adds to the basic specification. For example O2 will add O2 Plus.
You can indeed flash one prophet ROM with the ROM of the other prophet - but be careful otherwise you will end up with an expensive paper weight.
The price difference relies upon the software bundled and the warranty and tech support you get.
QTek costs less because there's almost lacking tech support, but at least you get twice as much of warranty (2 years vs 1 year) than on other brands.
Hi Rayan...
in fact, the o2 Version is cheaper than the QTek one...!
But thats a different story... Just after i ordered the o2 mobile on monday "night", i noticed that the price was higher on tuesday morning (similar to the Qtek) - maybe i asked too much questions
However, i ordered for the cheaper price; lets see if i will get it...
cu.... Marcel
P.S. in generell i have the feeling that technical support is always a bit disappointing... usually you find more help in these kinds of forums
Hint: O2-prices can vary a *lot* between online shop, O2-stores, independent phone stores and the MediaMarkt stores.
Be sure to check that!
cu
Hi ...
yep, true... But i just got my o2 neo last Friday from an internet store and... the display is heavily damaged... one can use it but it has a huge (20x10 pixs) spot of dead pixls...
So.. having bought it in a slightly more expensive o2 store would be nice now as well... lets see...
cheers.. Marcel
