Can't longer play WMA as ring tone

Weird, my XDA 2 lost ability to play WMA's as ring tone. Use to fork just fine, I've had Fantasy.wma assign to it. Now I can onlu choose Default.
Any ideas? :?:
Hey Man! I also have the same Prob.. I can only play the Windows Default ring... it just happened by itself! any Help would be great....
Found it!
It was file association problem. It happened right after I've installed Conduits Pocket Player which plays various formats of audio files, including WMA. But for norma ringer funcionalty WMA format SHOULD BE ASSOCIATED WITH MEDIA PLAYER!. I've changed it back to Media player and now ringer works again. I used Resco Expolere to change this association back.

I am glad someone could figure out the problem, but can anybody tell me where on the internet I can find wma ring tones for my phone.
Appreciate your help

Help - No Ringtones

Hi!
I'm using the O2 XDA II with WAXX ROM v1.72.
Recently, for some reasons, the ringtones (wma files) for my phone are no longer working. Only the Windows Default ringtone (wav) file is working.
Whats the problem and any help to restore the wma ringtones?
BTW, when I went to Start -> Settings -> System -> Add Ring Tone I could not find any wma files only wav and mid files. Why?
Thanks
it could also mean that you have a different defautl player for wma then Mediaplayer, I noticed that the ringtones fail if that is the case.
If you look up midi56.cab on the forum and re-install it (or midi561.cab), that should re-enable the ringtones. Manually registry hacking the wma extension back to media player would probably do the trick aswell...

what are you talking about ? Jamin can use mp3's as ringtones - you don't have to convert them to WAV !!!
wav it's the only supported format for WM5?
And what about wma files in windows directory?
I don't understand guys....
I've mp3 file and I'd like to use it as ring tone end/or alarm sound.... can you explain me where I have to put it to be inserted in the sound and notifications list?
You can easily use an MP3 as a ringtone... all you have to do is put it in the folder: Windows/Rings and then you can select it for any of your contacts... alternatively, just click and hold on the MP3 and one of the menu choices is 'Set as Ringtone' this sets your general ringtone as the selected MP3.
Just one little comment: If you are using MP3 for ring make sure they are small (not several MB like normal music) or you will get a delay before you here the ring (maybe several tones long). There are two excellent free apps I found that let you mold your MP3's to ring size:
MPTrim: http://www.mptrim.com/ it will let you cat the length of the file and increase volume if needed.
Second:
http://www.mp3-converter.com/mp3_to_all_converter.htm not only will this let you reduce the bit rate to make the files smaller it lets you re-encode files to and from many different formats.
Final note: You can also use files stored in your SD root (if you have one) but they are very slow to load, and you can use the sound from WMV files without separating it from the video.
Try to use Ringo Mobile from http://www.electricpocket.com/ringo-mobile/

Hi guys!
I've still a problem....
I justy put my mp3 in windows/rings dir but if I go to sound and notifications I can't see my mp3 in the list of rig tones...
I tryed soft reset too but the problem is still present.
I installed some sw like Photo Contact and Phone profiler ecc....
Now I have installed WMA Phone Profile and Photo contact (not Pro versione!). Is it possible that those sw can change some config on my Jamin?
Again. MP3 can ONLY be used as RINGTONES. They CANNOT be used for notifications (SMS, MMS, Clock,...).
To use MP3 as ringtones, you only have to copy them to the \Windows\Rings directory.
Enjoy!
Should be added that to select them go to:
Start->Settings->Personal->Phone
Ring tones
Curiouser and curiouser. After upgrading with Jester's 2.2 and installing Pocket Music, I cannot play mp3's as ring tones any more, but I can play .wav files. I can see them both, and both appear to open, but the mp3's are silent..... (both mp3's and .wav files are installed in Windows\Rings directory in this case). Last week the .mp3 files would play but not the .wav files!
.wav files installed in the Windows directory continue to behave as normal, appearing and opening as Notifications.
Can you still play MP3's with the built in WMP?
I suspect Pocket Music overwrote the codec for MP3 or screwed up the registry linking MP3 to it.
No idea how to fix this (short of hard reset though).
Yes, WMP still works just fine. No other impacts seen so far. So I'm happy enough, but would like to understand what happened.....

Ringtone always goes back to Windows default?

I have a Dopod D810 (WM5, ROM 1.23.707.6) and I have a strange and annoying problem...
When I set an MP3 or WMA file as a ringtone, it works on the first 1-2 occasions that someone calls then next time I receive a call, it will ring as the Windows default ring. Usually it will ring silently for about 2-3 rings then the Windows default tone kicks in. I go back and check and the MP3/WMA sound file is definitely still there and can definitely be played....
I store my ringtones under \Windows\Rings but have also tried with storing the files under \My Documents\My Tones and even \Application Data\Sounds...
Any ideas?
Or perhaps recommendations for a ringtone manager that can take over from WM's unstable handling of my ringtones...?
Thanks in advance!
This problem usually happens when Media Player is not the default player for MP3 or WMA files. Have you installed a music player recently? If so u need to make sure that Media Player is still the default player for MP3 and WMA, otherwise ringtones won't work properly.
yes, you're right, i installed pocket music and it is now the default player for mp3 files. i'll re-associate windows media player and give it another go...
hrmmm no luck, changed default mp3 player back to windows media player but it still plays the crappy windows default ring. i have no idea...maybe i just have to install WM6 and take my chances!?
are there any ringtone managers that u know if that i can try, perhaps that will stop windows misbehaving!

you can try ringo http://ringomo.com/
I store the MP3s to be used as ringtone in the root of the mini SD and I have no problem.
thanks all - am using Ringo and all is well for now!
The same happened to me
The same problem happened to me i know it's due to the new player i installed but i can't get it back to the default option ...any ideas?
I found the solution to this problem
I managed to solve this problem setup the PHM Registry Editor program
download it from this website
http://www.phm.lu/downloads/download.aspx?{940B734A-C437-41C7-ADED-2A4418802FD3}
after installation ...open the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT (Keys)
Then open the .mp3 then click on values
-open the default string file
-change the value data to mp3file (i found it was avifile so it's obvious that WM can't open it as it's mp3 not avi)
i hope this is useful for u
Thanks thundermind - I'm no longer having this problem after upgrading to WM6 however I have saved your solution for future reference

its not posible by the OS but try to rip a mp3 to wav and put it on windows folder. the audio manager does it but it makes wma only ringtones to incoming call, or try photocontacts pro is a nice program that can perform this for you.
