My JAM served me perfectly for a almost a year and now it's time to move on. Just sold it and ordered ETEN M500. I've got a bit tired of iMATE's position in OS upgrades, first with my XDA2 not having 2003 SE and now JAM with no 2005. Also, cripled BT, no voice dialing possibility also was a big factor for me. ETEN is using MS BT stack and does have this feature. Let's see how it performs in person. I am willing to help you guys with getting BT stack from ETEN working on JAM. Let me know if you need anything.
BTW, moderators, is that possible to create another forum here dedicated to ETEN?
Why order the M500 now and not wait a few months for the M600? Please post your findings on the M500 though as I'd love to hear how good / bad it is.

Because in few months my JAM will be older few months and I wouldn't be able to sell it for a good price. M600 doesn't impress me much over M500 - same memory size, same CPU, same look ( I am not big fan of black color either). Only WiFi. But I don't care about it much. If I really need one I have WiFi SD card ( which I maybe used once in 6 month). Price for m500 is good now and Windows 2005 upgrade is officially anonced for it.
My unit should be here on Tuesday. I'll let you know how it goes.
I'd love to yell at you for deserting HTC, but I am afraid you are doing the right thing. Darned...

Since you don't use WiFi, I think you made a very good move.

You can always get a really short Sceptre 802.11b Wi-Fi card from MadMonkeyBoy (http://www.dweiniger.com).
ID64... so how's the Eten coming along?
As I read on some reviews, Windows Mobile 5 is not the leap we are all waiting for. Or to be more specific: The leap I am waiting for.
I am happy with my Magician and I have not seen features that would make me switch to WM5 or another device with WM5.
The main thing for me is stability first, features second.
I don't want to be a beta tester for WM5, being an early adopter, life is hard enough ;-)

Mundl

Not here yet :? Tomorrow
m500??????
m500?
what make is it?
can someone post a link or tell me who make's them.
thanks in advance.
jaykummar, the make is E-TEN. If you do a search in google for E-TEN M500 you'll get lots of info.
Alas, I think we may be asking too much to open an "Eten" thread in an XDA forum...
I'll try other PDA forums. 8)

Strange how O2 and Orange have decided they're not going to release the 'Magician' aka O2 mini/MDA compact/I-Mate JAM/Orange M500 here in the UK. I'm wondering if its because WM2005 devices are right around the corner and this little gem won't be upgradable because it doesn't have the juice (memory/cpu) to run it...
I've come close 3 times now to buying one from T-Mobile.. but something just doesnt seem right.. think I'll wait a bit longer. T-Mobile is selling them like hotcakes.. o2 & orange must have a very good reason not to release these here and thats why Im thinking they're something 'special' on the horizon.
what do you guys think?
i think they want to release it with a new device.. just like what they did with the WM2003SE they didn't release any upgrades.. instead a new device..... who knows

At work, we run with Windows 2000 Server. Who cares that there's a 2003 version? The 2000 version does everything we want.
And isn't 2005 version of Windows Mobile going to be released in 2005, ages away?
I think people can tend to get a little wrapped up in what's just not available yet. 2nd edition Windows Mobile is going to be viable for some time yet, and is a bloody capable O/S. I know this won't be upgradeable, and just don't care...
I say get it now, there is always going to be something else you want tomorrow. Wait for that, and then something else is on the horizion.
I had an XDA II as I liked the PDA/phone idea but in practise it didn't work for me. The thing is just too big to be taken seriously as a phone, so I never used it. Tried things like the SE 910i and various Smartphones. None did the job. The SPV C500 is great, but I need a touchscreen on my pda.
So have just moved to the Jam and it is like a whole new world! It is a fabulous device and changed the way I think of and use a phone.
Cheers
Marc
Go for Jam....i have been using SE P900, moto mpx300 and Jam....I feel Jam outperformed all of them. P900 is more towards a phone....
Why you ask? Because WM2005 phones will be able to run out of battery and not have to be reconfigured (LIKE A NORMAL PHONE). Nothing is lost due to the way it uses the memory. That alone is reason enough for me, it would be nice to have to mess around the Extended ROM all the time or make backups every day for fear of losing everything. I don't have time for that these days.
WM2005 is supposedly due in the summer, and surely HTC is testing it on the replacement for the JAM as we speak.
HTC releasing a replacement for the JAM at these early stages of the JAM's life would be a suicide. What HTC want is to get as many JAM sales as possible, then release a replacement phone for us to buy another one!
Currently running WM2005 on my Himalaya, and get WiFi through a Pretec SD LAN card, no problems, but I have the chance to get an Andes free, but I know I won't use it as there's no WM2005 update available.
I don't want to take it just for the sake of it because there's someone else that could have it and make good use of it, but I have first refusal on it. I don't want to be greedy for the sake of it!
If I don't take it, and in a few weeks someone announces WM2005 for the Andes, I wil kick myself lol!
What would you do?
I'd take it! I never bothered getting the XDA2 because the VGA camera would be a backward step from my 7610. I waited until the XDA2i was available.
Plus isn't it better having WIFI built in so that your expqansion slot is freed up?
Possibly, the camera isn't an issue for me, but I like WM2005 too much to go back to 2003se, far more stable, nicer to use, and I would hate to have to use 2003se again just for internal wifi
I think just move to Andes, and wait 4 WM 5 for it...
It's worth for waiting
I think I might just see if he will let me keep it for a couple of months and see if WM2005 comes out, if not, I will give it to the other guy lol.
I really do not want to stop using WM2005 now though, so I know I would not use this Andes.
I was on the same position a few weeks ago... A frined asked me if I wanted to swap devices with him. His Blue Angel for my WM5.0 Himalaya...
No way Jose I said!!!
I can't imagine going back to WM2003SE, not even for Integrated Keyboard and WiFi... NO WAY!
So thanks but no thanks I said!
What is it especially that makes you want to keep 2005?
Simple!
Above all: Stability, performance, trouble-free phone calls with and without bluetooth headset.
Plus the look and feel as well as the one-hand opperation... There's no turning back once you learn the new ways of the interface.
OK, getting the Andes this weekend.
Don't think I will bother paying to have it unlocked until there is a WM2005 for it. If it ever happens. I think I will give it a few months, and if there's no sign of it, will sell it.
Would love to have built in WiFi and BT plus a faster CPU though
hi there
I know it's WM5 upgrade not available right now but I was just wondering that if it'll ever be possible that mini would be upgraded to WM5.Is it possible or mini doesn't meet the hardware requirements of WM5?your ideas?
Read the forums This was discussed all over the place!
However
You can always hope, especially as teh o2 atom specs ate similar.
I get mine hopefully next week when I am over in China.
Nope, never, jamais, nunca, nie, никогда, nooit, ποτέ, mai.

I hope that you are aware that Magician and o2 atom are not only different devices, BUT ALSO FROM DIFFERENT MANUFACTURERS.
I will not be so naive to hope for WM5 on Magician, instead I hope for a nice brandnew WM5 device under the christmas tree. This hope is more likely to become true
Oh, another one!
  BWAAA HAA HAA HAAA HAAAA HAAAA
Sorry, but I find people who ask this funny!
Especially because WM5 is absolutely uninteresting. It has been very slow on almost any new devices and the "nomore backups" issue isn't important to most of us people since we know how to make good backups - don't we?
I think WM5 is interessting! Not because of the Backup-Options.
Look here:
http://mobile-review.com/pda/articles/wm2005-1-en.shtml
The Outlook Contacts for example are _much_ better in WM5.
You see the Contact's full name _and_ the numbers and calling is so much easier!
Hate to sound like a newbie (which I am, just got my Mini/Magician today and first post to the forum), but according to some websites (http://www.gsmarena.com/o2_xda_atom-1372.php), looks like the new Atom will use the same processor as the Mini? Only difference is 128MB ram and possibly wifi (although another thread is debating that issue).
Wouldn't that be reason enough to expect a way to install Atom's WM5 to the Mini?

Stupy, the problem is not just the processor type. The OS has to interface with all the hardware on your device such as Camera, BT chip, WiFi, Screen, etc. All of these require "drivers" that have to be written specifically for your hardware.
Unfortunately WM5 on the Magician is almost impossible. Unofficial upgrades for other devices occured simply because M$ and/or carriers were testing the new OS on these devices and the ROM got leaked. Now that the testing is over who do you think will take his time and effort to develop this interface for free??? And that's providing he/she has the necessary resources.
At this point the only way to upgrade to WM5 is to sell your device and get a new one :-( I will probably go for the 02 XDA Atom or HTC Prophet fairly soon.
(btw, I really really hope someone proves me wrong )
look at this link
http://www.shinyshiny.tv/2005/12/pink_pda.html
the specs are almost identical to xda2mini except for the 128mb, does this mean there is still hope that wm5 would still be possible for mini?

Thanks kta for sorting that out. I just got the Mini, so it'll be a little while before I get the Atom - they don't sell too many of these types of phones here in Canada. No matter, I'll be happy with what I've got. Cheers!
Hi all,
I have an XDA exec, and am looking to change it for a Wizard. How much difference (if any) is there in the speed of these devices, as I understand the Wizard doesn't use an Intel processor it uses Texas Instruments.
Does this mean having to get different binaries ? or do ARM ones still work ?
How do these devices compare... any thoughts appreciated.
Cheers
Well i had an exec and made the exact same decision as you are thinking of making. I have no regrets believe me. First and foremost the phone part works brilliantly, secondly it seems faster to me than the exec, you dont look like a tit when you answer it and it doesnt weigh a ton.
Things i miss:-
VGA Screen
3g Data speed
Nicer keyboard
Things i dont miss:-
Useless phone
Slow speed
Weighty
Large and hard to use
Any more questions just ask
Chris

Phew, glad it's working out for you Chris!
I switched too...
I had an exec and now I HAVE A WIZARD... I will never look back. I miss the VGA screen but that's about it.
Cyb
Have both but going to sell my exec.
Again will only miss the beautiful VGA screen.
Would O2 do a straight swap for the wizard (xda mini) or did you guys buy and sell yours privately ?
EDIT: Only within the first 14 days
Anyone wanna swap a XDA exec, bought in october 2005 for a xda mini (wizard) in black.
PM me if interested
Thanks for the responses gents, seems like a unanimous decision all round to me
Just to uphold the concensus ...
I got the Exec first , then an MDA Vario
I must say I agree with all that is said so far , the only downside is the size of the screen and the lack of 3G (no big deal IMO ) But in it's (the vario's) favour , it is a much better PHONE than the Exec , and I do need my device to be able to function as a phone as well as making the tea etc.
I am a bit gutted , as I loved the Exec , and feel sad that the Vario has rendered it almost obsolete (for my needs , at least)
Tried to sell the Exec on Ebay , but had a bit of trouble - and to be honest I was quite pleased , as I don't REALLY want to sell it :? , but can't really justify keeping it either !
I could have written that post!
I have the O2 mini and Exec. Why? Well I got the Exec through my work when upgrading and I got the mini for myself as it looked agreat bit of kit. Have had both for about three weeks.
Guess what is sitting there not getting used - the Exec!!! Sure it has a great screen and the keyboard is a flashback to the Psion 5 but for sheer convenience it has to the the mini - excellent (not fantastic a an actual phone but a great all rounder).
It will be inetresting what will be out this time next year!
Anyone want an Exec?
I have to agree with everything above. I had an Universal for about 6 weeks and loved it, however, I did find it totally unpractical as an everyday phone and ended up diverting calls to an old Nokia, which sort of defeated the object!! I then saw a K-Jam in PC World and it was love at first sight Got a fantastic deal from T-Mob (Vario) and have never looked back. I think the Universal is a great bit of kit but the Wizard does it for me every time
Hi Folks,
I need a bit of help choosing my next PDA, I've had loads of pocketPC, windows mobile devices inc. HP Jornada 548, Tosh 540, Dell X5, iPAQ hx4700 but this will be my first forage into "convergance" devices.
I was originaly tempted to upgrade my phone to the Orange UK version of the HTC TyTN but i'm now getting cold feed with all this talk of new devices due out, I know there are always newer and better just around the corner but I don't want to jump into a 12 month contract just to find a newer and better unit being available next week.
My dilema is this.....after seeing the specs for the O2 Zinc with the Xscale 520Mhz processor and seeing the benchmarks against the TyTN I'm now more inclinded to wait the for the release of this Zinc (26th March 07), however on my travels through the tinternet I have stumbled upon what I would consider my ideal device...the HTC Kaiser, does anybody have any ideas which network will be carring this device and when it will be released????
I'm fairly sure the overwelling opinion on the site will be for the TyTN but I just need to know what makes this device a "No Brainer" compaired to the O2 Zinc.
Cheers Jim

Not really the answer you want, but my philosophy on life is, get the best you can today and not worry about what's out tomorrow... otherwise you'll never get anything because you'll always find that a month or so down the line something better will come out... so to say!
Otherwise, the Zinc does seem impressive... but O2 have already delayed the release once, so who's to say it will actually be out at the end of march anyway
True....Very True. The exception to that case was the iPAQ hx4700. which in my opinion is still one of the very best PDAs out there and its now 2 years old ???
I decided to hang back for the release of the Zinc hoping WM6 will be on it. have you tried flashing your rom to wm6??? if so did you have any problems setting the phone back up for T-Mobile??

I'll agree with you on that... I used to have a hx4700 myself... it was the VGA aspect that appealed to me, but I felt it was before its time... oh, and slightly big!
I think the Zinc will have v5.2 on it???
I've flashed my MDA several times and can almost memorise the internet/mms settings that takes approx. 2 mins to put back in... its all good fun
You may never flash WM6 on a Zinc...

Yeah - similar case here. I flash frequently and I could probably set it all back up again the way I like it with my eyes closed Top tip: get CAB files for all your favourite apps (and any relevant serial numbers) and keep them in a folder on your storage card. That way you can even get all set up from a full reset with nothing but your phone.

Absolutly agree.... I kept all my CAB files on my SD card..Just incase.. but that was WM03se. Is there a HTC "official" rom update available for wm6...where did the wm6 roms come from?? oh and whats the best...
back to the original question,
I own a TYTN and ive had good test run with the Zinc, even though the Zinc has a faster OS the tytn feels faster and reacts better. The finish of the Zinc is a big cheap looking too.
If i was to buy a new phone today it would be the Tytn again, if i was to wait then it would be kaiser or even one of the new samsungs.
Cheers lads.....Just bought a TYTN - Orange SPV M3100 to be more precise.
Now whats the score with all these ROM upgrades.
and is there a today plugin simliar to the Orange today screen
Problem with O2 is the data charges. They're probably the worst out of all the UK networks!
I'd hate to get a phone like the Zinc or Kaiser and have to constantly monitor my data useage.

That's far too big a question. You've got some reading to do - see the wiki
for the mods.. you can delete this message if you want...
i just want people warned specially in asia region that o2 zinc is not that good ..
although better processor ( but you will not see the difference compare to HTC hermes ),camera and o2 integrated software..
THere are many other choices on O2 products... Atom exec, atom life..etc..
Just not this is O2 Zinc is not worth recommending....
or im strongly recommending HTC HERMES (Dopod 838 pro, Softbank, or the HTC Tytn if available) if your fun of slide keyboard...
I promised you this will be a great help on you...
Trust me...
I just want you to be happy like me now..
