Start up and background processes - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

Hi,
Is it possible to see what kind of apps are started when I soft-reset jam ?
Something like "Start Up" folder in the XP or "msconfig"
Also, is it possible to see what kind of apps are now running in the background ?
Thanks,
g.

Background applications --> automaticly closed

I've a problem with applications running in background (Cell Profiler or Battery Analyzer, for exemple): when I minimize them everything seems to be ok. The little icon of the application is shown in the bottom right side of the screen, near the bluetooth icon.
Later, after a variable amount of time, the applications running in background are automaticly closed!Their icon disapper and I have to restart them...
Any idea?
Thanks!

mm, i would like that behaviour for other apps (like contacts, calendar)!!!

Thats normal function of WM2003.
As much as i know, there are only 32 processes allowed in WM2003.
The program runs in backgroung until you open some other programs, until the limit of processes are reached. Then some application will be automaticly closed.
There have been an thread about this issue about half an year ago.

Does it exist a way to change this behaviour?If windows closes running tasks when others are opened, applications like cell profiler can't work correctly!!

I don´t know exactly if there is a workaround for. I don´t think so. Try searching little bit in the forum, or in newsgroups concerning WM2003.
It´s a global problem and not special with the XDA devices...

Try to install WisBar Advance (www.freecabs.de).
I solved the issue this way

Guys - this has been updated here
Ladies and Gents:
I'm posting a program I've just knocked together. It's beta, I guess, and is really only for my own use, but I'd like you all to give it a go and tell me what you think. Please be nice :lol:
Theory - I use a magician, and like a nice clean basic theme:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
However, it gets cramped. So, does anyone really need to use the tray at the bottom? Or the new button? Hence:
It's basically a toggle switch to hide the menu bar at the bottom (it actually shrinks it down to pretty much invisible, and pops it back when you untoggle it).
Now, it's beta: it has code for VGA screens but I can't test it, so send me an X50v and I'll love you forever.
It does work in landscape, but you must be in portrait mode first to toggle the menu bar. Once the bar has gone, it'll stay gone until you go to portrait mode and toggle it back.
Please provide feedback, nicely, and screenshots if it works for you!
Not for Windows Mobile 2005
I understand it does something on WM2005, but not what it's supposed to, so don't use it! Send me WM2005 instead
ToggleToday CAB
ToggleToday.exe version 0.8 - 15 August 2005
PLEASE NOTE:
do not put in startup folder :!:. It needs clear and easy access to your today screen, so after your PDA has loaded up nicely, just click on it once. sIf your menu bar disappears, great! Tap it again and the menu bar should come back.
USAGE
1. Install from cab or executable.
2. Click on it. It should go to Today screen and your menu bar should disappear. If it doesn't, click it again. If it still doesn't, then the prog doesn't work on your machine. Post details here.
3. If your menu bar does disappear, you should be set. If you want to somehow cause your today screen to refresh to acknowledge the new size, go to Settings > Personal > Today and just click ok. Or rotate your screen, and rotate back again.
I have a Magician. It works fine for me. It is harmless and doesn't have the capacity to hardreset your phone. But don't put it in the startup folder because programs are loaded in an unpredictable order and so it might not be able to reach the today screen. Just click on it once after everything has loaded.
Note: if your today background image looks tiled like the screenshot further down the thread, it may be that your image is not big enough to fill the screen. It should be around 294 pixels high now to fill the today screen.
Please post screenshots, good or bad, to see how it worked for you.
Vijay
that's quite useful program.
thanks man.
Very Nice!

It is 5k :shock:

Great little app but,
Im using an O2 Mini and it doesn't want to work. Copied the file into RAM (My Doc's), click on it...... it seem to load as it went back to the today screen (no resize). Went into setting, today and click OK and tried changing backgrounds, exited and no resize. I even placed it in the startup folder.
Any ideas?
UPDATE
The Startup Folder worked....... all good
Question can you toggle it back? if I launch your app and try to refresh the screen to doesn't return. I'm assuming I have to remove the app from the startup folder and restart.
Also can you make it even smaller, I have about 3mm at the base.
Thanks
Will look into it. It's best not to put it in the startup folder, because it needs to display the today screen to find the menu bar. If you put it in the startup, PPC might be doing other stuff and not allow today to pop up. Also, with password on it just brings up error.
See if you can post some screenshots. I'm not sure about the pixels at the bottom - today seems to resize itself when it's prompted to resize, ie a plugin changes size. I've got a plugin (NotesToday) that changes size and so triggers this. For anyone else, I suppose going into today settings screen will do the same. I'll automate this one day, but PPC doesn't like finding child windows, so is a pain, but I'll do it when i have some time.
Also, VGA testing would be useful. Someone send me a VGA PPC!
PS yes it's supposed to toggle. However, if it "looses" the menu, you'll probably have to softreset to get normal operation. Once it works, it works toggle on and off. Normally
V
bugs!! beware!!
first of all, nice idea !! but it doesnt work on my O2 mini.
Before i go a bit into what happened, here's something that might help, in case someone gets into the same issues.
Firstly, please make sure your mini can connect to PC via activesync without any issue. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT, and saves me from the hassle of HARD RESET!!
Next, please backup everything!!!!!!!!!
IF your mini refuses to boot up properly during startup and seems to hang somewhere, DO NOT PANIC, connect it to your Activesync-installed PC (via USB) and see if you can access the File Folders in your PPC.
If you can, you're in luck. If not, I won't know how to help...
Now, here's what happened to me, I tried this plugin. Firstly, i placed it in a folder in my mini and then click on it.... nothing happens, no minimised bottom tray, next, i tried what ampda said, place in STARTUP folder, and reboot.. now here's where my mini hung!!! but i was lucky even though the mini seems to hang with no response to the screen, i was able to connect it to PC (via activesync) and then go into the STARTUP folder and delete away the plugin and then reboot, and now, everything is back to normal!!!!
Sorry, this is not saying that the plugin is not good, just that it doesnt work with my mini.. could be a conflict somewhere.. and I thought the method to delete the culprit might save yourself the hassle of a HARD RESET.
Anyway, hope to get a working version soon..
Thanks!!
Well I just tested the soft reset with the file in start up and it worked ok again. I checked to see if in what order the files loaded and this app is the last one so maybe its ok if its the last file to load.
I'll work on the screengrab later tonight
Heres a grab of my current screen. Notice the bottom shows about a 3mm gap. It looks like the backgroud image has "tiled" the O2 image.
RE
Thats cool man :lol:
Is it possible to have a cab file for direct install to the PPC?
Thanks
charleslee - It shouldn't do anything that would cause a hard reset or a soft reset, but I've said, don't but it in the startup folder because it needs clear access to the today screen. What it does, and all it does:
1. Find and bring up today screen.
2. Find the menu bar.
3. If menu is visible, hide it. If menu is invisible, so return it.
5. If hiding the menu, shrink it to 0,319 to 1,1 pixel.
That's it.
However, it needs to bring up the today screen, otherwise it can't find the menu. So putting it in startup is at your own risk. Worst that can happen is that it will try to shrink some other window to 1 pixel. If that happens, I guess expalin here what happened, what you're using etc. It's not intended obviously to be used with WDA or PPX etc. Just plain vanilla Today screen.
Frankly, I wouldn't recommend anyone uses this if they're not confident in softresetting a lot! It works for me, but I can't and haven't tested it widely.
Always do backups of your phone anyway, and especially before using this.
The worst that should happen in normal use tho is that you will temorarily lose your today screen; if you do, you can still access start menu to remove the program from your start folder (DON'T put it there, just launch it once after everything has loaded up), and soft reset.
FOSA - self installing cab - does it need one? It's a single file. Just put it in your Programs Menu with gsfinder and launch if needed.
If people are having troubles, I might remove the program, don't want people foobarr-ing their systems!
ampda - I'll work on the pixel issue at some point. I use a plain white background so didn't notice this
V
ampda - a thought occurs to me. Are you sure the bitmap you're using as a backdrop is big enough? Obviously now it needs to be 320-26=294 pixels high. Can you check that?
Also, try installing some more today plugins to force a scroll bar to be displayed. Then check where the little "^" and "v" arrows on the scrollbar end - hopefully they should be aligned with the very top and bottom edge of the screen. If not, then I have to change the code. If they are aligned properly, then the issue (should) be your backdrop image size.
V
nice and cool...
RE
OK!
Tried it and it works pretty well :lol:
Hi vijay,
My previous message was not meant to discourage you from developing wonderful apps for the community!!
Do accept my apologies if you felt that way!
It's just that I've been through lots of hard-resets when i first started using a PPC (Ipaq 4150), some were necessary, some were mistakes, some were "disasters"...
and when i put your plugin in my STARUP folder and restarted my mini, tapping on the screen did nothing when it boots up, it sorts of freezes and multiple attempts to reset (soft-reset) gave the same results.
but luckily, i remembered that there was once i could access my PPC via activesync even though the screen got stuck!! so i thot users here might want to know this before they press the button(s) to HARD-RESET.
Anyway, after seeing your explanations, i decided to try your plugin again. this time, i mapped it to a hardware shortcut button with MortButtons, and it works!!!
As mentioned, the culprit might be my other plugins that are fighting for screen attention..
Also, if it helps, I also did the BigStorage hack (using the "2-byte" method) to my mini. now it's running 1.11.00WWE and i have a couple of MAJOR issues too. Most annoying thing is CallerID sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, i might want to reinstall the old callerID version to check if it helps.
so, please keep up the good work and update us if there is any new findings and developements for this plugin and your other WIPs!!
Thanks!!!!!
doesn't seem to work on MDA2 with WM5.0

Yeah your right it was simply the size of the backgroud image. I treid a different image and it worked, the scroll bar ran right to the bottom of the page.
Thanks again for this app.
PS (Still the only way of implementing your app for me is in the startup folder)
Guys - I can't test this on WM5. I suppose I might be able to use the emulator, but I don't have access to the device. Might get around to this one day.
The app is a standalone app, so run it once and forget about it, each time you soft reset. Sometimes you need to click it twice, if it doesn't work the first time. If it doesn't work after that, it won't work!
About feeling sensitive! I only try to warn people off from it if it's likely to screw up their system - there's nothing in it that can cause harm, only inconvenience, but don't put it in the startup folder IMHO because you don't know what will get in the way of the today screen. I use a boot password and it doesn't work at all then.
Thanks for the feedback all.

Hi Vijay,
just to give you confidence..
here's how my screen looks like after making your wonderful app works

Slow, slow, sloooow

Hello,
I believe many of you are (or have been) having similar problems - I wonder if there's a solution for this?
The problem I have is that when the device comes back from sleep (that is, when I open it after not using it for a while) the screen lights up immediately, but the device is extremely unresponsive. Trying to click the Start menu (or anything else on the screen for that matter) will appear to do nothing at first - then when the device finally comes to its senses (10-30 seconds later) my clicks are "played back" at lightning speed. From then on the device is usable, but this delay is infuriating.
I have ROM 1.13.53 WWE (from Sep-23) with radio 1.03.01. My notifications database is small (15 entries) and I'm not running a lot of apps (I have PocketPlus installed).
Is anyone else having this problem? Is there a solution?
TIA
Are you using any Themes? Try switching back to the standard wm5 theme. My m5000 gets very glacier-like as soon as I try any other theme.
Try this.
Thanks for the replies!
I'm using the default theme. As for this Uni-Turbo thing, what does it do? Just so I know before I install it?
it will speed u your processor, after istall u will find the changing botton on Start/Settings/System/Power/Processor it works but using more power.
Im using this, it works Great ... i think its free, but
It essentially places a control panel file in \Windows which 'replaces' the power control panel item. The replacement is from another device, which has a Turbo Mode. So this gives you the ability to activate the turbo mode on your Universal. I've tried it - its safe to use and removing it returns things back to normal.
Try it and see if anything improves. I can guarantee though, that you'll see far more improvement by hard resetting (use Sprite Backup's free beta to backup emails, contacts, messages, etc).

If you have some Today plugins installed on your device it might slow down the response after turning it on.
For example:
I've got the Resco Explorer installed with it's Today plugin, and my device comes back with the plugin displayed in 15 seconds after opening it.
But when I turn off displaying Resco Today plugin it comes back immediately, after opening... (0,5 secs)
HoPe
My Uni works very well, but then I use it for next to nothing, but I keep memory clean with VJOkButt and stay away from memory resident stuff.
Although not exactly for this question, installing the extended rom dialler had a dramatic impact on speed on mine. If you don't need the pretty buttons, I highly recommend the stock MS Dialler.
V
Start button slowdown on first use
On the issue where the start button doesn't seem to do anything for a while after a suspend or soft reset:
The reason is that an application is listed in the Start Menu which resides on the SD card. What happens is that the Start menu tries to load the icon of the application from the SD card, which first has to wake up, causing the slowdown.
Same thing happens when you're browsing through the Programs folders (Start -> Programs), and there is a pause while loading the application shortcuts.
It's quite annoying, and I think it may be related to one or other registry hack.
Use SmallMenu!

Uninstalling the extended rom - i don't think so. You can probably manually delete the files it installs, but it'd be incredibly tedious and perhaps inaccurate/unstable. Best is to hard reset and setup again, but that's also tedious.

If you are using SPB Pocket Plus or any other similar software and allowing the SD card indicator on your today screen just remove it and you will realize the difference.
Also avoid to use any battery indicator on today screen as it will slow the device as well.
My last advice to you if you are using SPB Pocket plus is to un-install it and use any other similar program like Resco today plugins.... this will also speed up your device becuase the available version of SPB pocket plus is not completely compatible with WM5.
Regards,
I am using SPB PP (beta release) and its fast, but I didnt have a real problem with the earlier releases. I also use SPB diary and SPB Weather, and still no real problem, slightly sluggish but not intolerable.
My device wakes up perfectly immediately every time, and rings at the beginning of the second ring.
1. Remove SD card and battery monitors
2. Disable some of the additional SPB plug ins that you dont need like safe mode boot, PIE plug ins, battery monitor etc
3. Remove the antivirus software
4. Disable error reporting
5. Disable auto receive beams
6. Try disabling SPB altogether and see if it is still sluggish and unresponsive
7. Dont have anything on SPB or other that is immediately directed to the SD card as the SD card takes longer to recognise on wake up
8. Consider not switching the device off. I never turn it off, at all, wind down screen brightness, disable auto off, but auto off the screen only, close the clam shell switches off the screen but doesnt switch off the machine. the screen sucks the battery, not the processor.
Let me know if you have had any luck with this.
Perhaps you could also:
1. Ensure you have the latest rom from the website
2. Dont allow the extended rom to install (hard reset, and press reset when it says customising device), then use total commander to go to the extended rom and selectively install the items you need, this forum is full of information for this.

It seems to me it is locked at the following list:

Suspend
SmallMenu

I disagree, try to power off the device every time you close the clam and power it on when you open it and you will see how much the battery life will improve. It really makes the difference, I just can't be bothered and am too lazy to do it :lol: I charge it every night anyway.

Best Task Manager?

Alright... I need a good (great?) task manager.
I have used SPB and Magic Button. I like SPB but it is too difficult to hold in the corner of the screen on my Wizard (8125) and I dont want to install ALL of it just for that (I use resco explorer and I like it better then SPB's addins to the default file explorer.)
Magic button was the next logical choice because it puts the icon in the middle of the screen and that's what I use now, but I'm not crazy about it. Anyone have any other suggestion? I am looking for something that is one hand friendly and lite weight and fast (of course, I want it ALL! lol)
Thanx in advance; Lew
Hi Lew...
You might want to try this http://www.insoftwarehouse.com/desktop/products/inclose/index.php?l=en
or you could try Wisbar Lite at http://www.lakeridgesoftware.com/products.php?prod=WisBar+Lite
there seems to be some kind of conflict with every single task manager I've used so far:
InClose Mobile: freezes my Pictures & Videos app
Wisbar: doesn't close correctly on many windows such as Resco explorer options, and wallpaper changing. It simply ends the window thus discarding any changes you make.
Magic button: Made some of my status icons on the top bar disappear
still looking for the perfect app...

You know it has two display modes, right? If you tap-and-hold the OK/close button, it will switch between showing the Magic Button icon + running programs icons, and just showing your regular bar. I have it set up to just take up the whole task bar space, and usually show my regular bar. If I need to switch apps, I can just tap and hold and tap the icon of the app I want active.
I have tryed those 2 now and I am back to Magic Button. The MAIN reason... It is too hard to HOLD the corner of the screen with my thumb on the 8125, I guess because the border of the screen is raised so much. Ah well back to what works I guess.
Thanx guys; Lew
Hi,
You can also try Xbar. You can find it with Google. It is not freeware but very cheap. It is a completely different idea from a taskmanager. You use the Actionbutton to call on the Xbar and then you can switch or close tasks or open programs without using the stylus.
I've been using it for a couple of months now after using every taskbar on the market for the last 4 years...
Wouter
If you want a proper task manager, this is pretty much definitive:
http://buzzdev.net/component/option,com_simpleboard/Itemid,59/func,view/catid,27/id,15472/#15472
By one of Buzz's boys, DotFred. It's superb.
But that's really for tech heads. If you just want to close apps, use SMclose or similar.
If you really just want one handed task closing, check out VJOkButt on the board (not my website, versions on here are newer). It has various options but is very simplistic, but does close apps one thumbed.
V
I bought xbar3, its a great very straightforward piece of software.
You can find information on it here
I've previously used handyswitcher which i didn't enjoy, because it listed 'phone' as a running application and tried to close it.
best app closer/task manager hands down:
PocketNav 2.74 http://www.scottandmichelle.net/scott/cestuff/pocketnav.zip
Free and just a simple .exe to throw in your startup. If you don't like it, just delete it. I've been using it for several years now and have tried others. I always come back quickly...

I like SmallMenu Plus, a launcher/manger, highly configurable, can replace STart menu. There is a free version, but for a couple $$ you get a lot more functionality. It's the first program I install.

Guys… what am I missing here? I’m managing tasks via tray launch and have no complaints but then I’m a noob and don’t know any better. Please let me know if this is dumb. TIA
I have my first two tray launch links set to “AltTab” and “Running Programs”. From Today, I navigate down w/dpad and have task switcher tool there. Move one right and I can kill apps via OEM system tool.
Picture 1 shows tray icons. First (far left) is AltTab and second is Running Programs (created under ZeBoxx’s tutelage).

Just a convenience thing E.g. like a on a desktop, you could run Task Manager, click the task you want, and then choose Activate or End Task. But you could also alt-tab to go to the application you want active, and you can click the buttons on your taskbar to switch to them directly, or close them from there.
Personally I still like MagicButton best, but there's a ton of these types of apps out there, all with different styles and functionalities. I'd say just try some of them - if you don't like it, just uninstall

Thanks for that tip I like small programs and it works well with smclose. I found magic button a bit glitchy and hid icons on the nav bar so I could not see missed calls etc.

If you have not tried smclose it is attached and just put in startup folder as well and it will close rather than minimize apps.
I ask myself then do I need a task manager with all apps closed lol

I've been playing around with SKMenu and it seems to work really well on my 8125. It is a bit to get configured but once you scan through the options is it pretty simple. The custom menu editor with the preview is very very nice when creating custom menus.
Overall its not bad for $8. If it continues to play nice with all the other junk on my PPC I am sold.

I like SmallMenu Plus, a launcher/manger, highly configurable, can replace STart menu. There is a free version, but for a couple $$ you get a lot more functionality. It's the first program I install.

Wgary (or anyone that uses SmallMenu(Plus).
Has anyone figured out how to hide or exclude certain applications from the close processes list (ie. Activesync, Phone, etc)? There is a settings button in the general tab of the smenu settings but it is disabled. Anyone figure this one out?
TIA!

i put AltTab.exe in \windows and placed shortcut in \windows\start menu\programs too. then used the following command line in PHM Traylnch: \windows\alttab.exe (http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=42913&highlight=)
the AltTab in the tray along with water's sweet "smartskey" work fine for me and seem to give me the task management control i need. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=41060&highlight=)

Can't do it. The one that can, which is very similar to SmallMenuPlus (but free) is GSPocketMagic.

Thanks for that tip I like small programs and it works well with smclose. I found magic button a bit glitchy and hid icons on the nav bar so I could not see missed calls etc.
Another small app to my collection
If you have not tried smclose it is attached and just put in startup folder as well and it will close rather than minimize apps.
I ask myself then do I need a task manager with all apps closed lol

Thanks for the file. You know, pocketnav closes apps as well. It puts an X on the screen so you can close the app and if you click on the lightening bolt, you can see a list of everything that's running and close them one at a time, all but active, or all.
Play around with the settings, it's pretty powerful!

How to enable "Close Programs on X" via registry

Hello everyone,
can someone tell me that by clicking "X" in an app my HD2 will finally close programs and will not keep them running in the background...!?
In my ROM (2013/6.5.3) there is no feature in the settings area as in former times to enable or disable it. Is there any registry hack?
Thx in advance.
Nobody any clue??
Install Dutty's task manager and it will add that option to your control panel.
Another option is WKTask. It hasn't been updated for a long time and looks like the author has lost interest, but it works fine with 6.5 and even 6.5.3. Just disable the skin (which draws its own OK or X button on the task bar) - you will not loose any functionality.
Isn't there any registry solution?
Dutty's Task Manager didn't as it is not compatible with 6.5.x. The setting was added but didn't affect anything...
Try the TouchX task manager. Both Dutty's or that have always worked for me, so you may still have the 6.5.5 compatibility issue, but I've never heard of that before.
For windows mobile 6.5.x try this forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=618300" its works great
In fact I do not want a task manager. I just want to close programs and not minimize them. There must some kind of registry hack for that...

No! There is none. You need a programm that runs in background/as a process which monitors the x-button and closes programms. Its just like that.
BTW. WKTask and Opera 10 dont work together. Try installing WKTask and got to landscape in Opera10. The device will crash. Can anybody please confirm this as i still love WKTask (Im on RTTs RTMi 5 ROM with 6.5.3 and Sense 2013) --> Thanks guys
I want something like this too. I came from an iPhone, so excuse my noobness but when you hit the HOME key it closes a program out, not run in the background. I want to be able to hit 'X' at the top and it closes the program out, not run in the background. I just cant believe nobody has made a run around, a .cab or reg edit for this. I hate having a slow HD2 because the proccess keep piling up.

I never said there is no solution. Theres just no way via the registry. You will need one of the millions of taskmanagers out there. I recommend Ameba (close via tapping x, minimize via holding x) in combination with ArkSwitch (complete Taskmanager, can be opened via tapping left part of the taskbar or long press sendkey). The best and most stable solution in my opinion.
Greets
Forget the iphone they invent now the multitasking....
Get one task manager and a ram cleaner(optional) and go with multitasking!!!!
You will get used of it
Take a look at Wisbar: great program, great developer and a excelant support
Hi,
i have got a contrary problem.
My running programs do not stay in the Backround.
Mostly, if i push the home or back-key, my HD2 closes the actual program. The program is in backround for a short time and then it closes.
I can see it, i have WKTask running. It is the same, if i have uninstalled WKTask, so this taskmanager is not the cause.
I have this problem mostly, not always but i can´t see the cause.
What is wrong with my HD2?
