I just did a backup to SD and files are missing (Pix Mp3 etc...) now the only folders are the recycle bin (advanced explorer) Backup file 20Mb and "ignore mydocs" which is 0kb. The properties still says the space is taken up with stuff on the card but i can't get at the files. Any ideas or do i have to format the card.
I know SD card erasures has been thread before but I didn't know if the XDA2 problem was new. I'm using windows default theme, no-name 256Mb SD card.
Thanks
This is the first that hear about lost SD files on the XDAII. This has been bothering me a lot on XDA1 and WM2003 and there is no OS documentation on the Phone Edition of WM2003.
The interesting thing is that you do have some folders remaining in the card. Is the backup functional(Were you able to restore from it?) Most erasures completely erase the card and all the directories therein.
I did some research on the Radio Interface layer and the specific DLL's interaction with the OS. As a continuation to the following:
http://xda-developers.com/RIL/
I feel the problem lies in how the Radio Stack conflicts programatically with how SD cards are recognized by the device. So I wrote a few apps to trace how files are written to the card and when there is a new card ID generated by the device.
The erasures coincide with the new SD card ID in the OS and port/ layer. However, since the RIL and stack are built in and not documented I have not been able to isolate and resolve the problem.
How long have you had this card?
what apps do you have installed in the XDA II?
Has the erasure occurred before?
I've had this happen once and only once after uninstalling some software. I have a "viking 512MB" sd card.
I ejected it then put it back in then pointed the file explorer to it and all was back to normal.
once..
It happened to me once (i had xda 2 now for a month)...
I lost data which has no backups.. since I had this 512MB panasonic on all my Ipaq 3970,5450,550,2210,1910, and 4150 and it never fails ...
Now this xda 2 erased it all ... been 2 weeks now and still holding... but I am backung up my SD now once for while..
- my new problem, if my phone portion hangs, and softreset, I got stuck on O2 blue screen and need to hard reset.. last night it happened again and the pda portion still working , so backed up and hard reset...
I still has the 13Q protocol version, I heard someone fix this problem upgarding to 14 ?

I suggest if you can place the card in a Laptop or PC and run Scandisk.
There may even be a Pocket PC program that can do the same thing so you might try doing a web search for one.
Flash Format comes to mind:
http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=851
HTH
tried all..
:x
I tried all in my laptop, even Norton etc... really nothing left !!
I had the PCMCIA adpter for MS/SD/MMC/Smartmedia..
the FILES ARE there!!
Hi all, please be carefull the files are not ERASED they are there but somehow hidden!!! :!: :?: :!: , it happened to me on my Sandisk 256MB and after a week, things went back to normal and i had all my files accessable, i copied them to my PC and now after a month , the files disapeared again on my SD Card but if you check the CARD you can see that some files are taking space which mean again they are there but not accessable.
a week ??
I dont think I can last a week to wait until my sd files come up again ...
DO you have any quick fix on this issue like rewriting the FAT thru norton or other SW ?
I had checked with my laptop last time and my files really disappeared..
HI
the files are there on the card and they are hidden. They appear to be broken up into 12k chunks... is there any way to recover them?? I'm using a no name 256k sd card and the problem occured after doing a full back up. Incidentally the recovery file is faulty and will no work. I'm not too bothered but i lost loads of photos....
thanks
I have a 256Mb SD card that suddenly reported itself as having only 40Mb free when the total of stored files was only 16Mb.
I had to reformat to reclaim the lost space.
Has anyone else experienced this with SD cards and, if so, what it the likely cause?
well file explore dont really display hiddenfiles so the card could have all kinds of those
other file managers like total commander display all files
hi. I don't have XDA 2 but I think it happen to most most ppc 2003 OS because you are install some software that do not fully support or not support wm 2003. ( it happen to me on h5555, h5400,e405) So you need to hard reset a few times.
Sd problems continued....
High
Well i have a similar problem, but could solve it with a soft reset.
Now i have another problem..... I dont know how, but my card is.... i dont know how to explain. let me start from the beginning.
When i got my SPV M1000, i also got a new SanDisc SD 256 MB.
I installed cuple o programs :
PHM ( Pocket Hack Master ) main memory
Pocket Mechanic Main Memory
Stuntman Evolution Sd Card
Crazy Cart Sd Card
just to give you some exaples.
I then copyed the exe files and a X back up on my card. to have them with me if needed.
After biing happy for a half week ( experimenting with PHM and Pocket Mechanic) and a lot of playing with my device, all of a sudden, my SD card was wiped out!!!
It was all gone!!!!!
I tryed to repair/reformat/restor with pocketmechanic but nothing.
Everythin was simply not there anymore ( im talkin about 30 meg of data!!!
Active sync tells me " unavailiable " when i try to install to the SD card, and when i chose to do it anyway.... it works.
Files get istalled just fine on my card.
Now for the interessting part.
Crazy Cart just stopped working!!!
" Cannot find "crazycart" or one of its components.
Make sure the path and filename are correct and all the required libraries are availiable"
is the text i get when i try to start it.
Its happenig again...... its starting to ,lose files??
has anybody expirienced the same or similar ?
is my card broken eaven though POCKETMECHANIC TELLS ME ALL IS FINE?
Any help would be coooooooool
thanx
peace
Guys,
I've just been doing some optimisations on my XDA when I came across the following. When I have no SD card plugged in I have 24.53MB of RAM free. When I plug my 1GB SD card in I have 16.21MB Free. If I install the ROM unlocker I go down to 7.83MB. This is a lot of RAM just to access the external storage cards. (Yes the Extended ROM is treated like a storage card) What RAM usage is everyone else seeing for memory card mounting?
It would be great if some of the gurus could look at this and give their opinions.
Regards,
Tim

Be interesting to see others results, but (bearing in mind i havent soft reset)
Using a 2GB SD card, my current program memory available is 20.25MB, taking it out for about one minute my memory went to 20.30MB.
Putting it back in memory went down to 20.19MB then back to 20.25MB.
Matt
Have you been messing about in the registry to try and speed up your phone? If so that's where all your memory is disappearing to. When I plug in my SD card the memory drops by about 500k, not 8 MB.
Thanks for the quick feedback. So far the only hacks I've used are the Highresources cab file and the ones found in Tweaks2K2. I may need to do a hard reset to verify the results on a clean install and take it from there.
BTW I'm using the latest imate ROM 1.30.76 WWE on the XDA Exec.
4gb transcend SD in --> 19,33mb ram
4gb transcend SD out --> 21,64mb ram
512 SanDisk miniSD in --> 19,52mb ram
(with the 4096kb cache enabled)
It's just 0.4 MB drop for my 2GB Sd Card.

These tweaks will probably have enabled the storage manager\FATFS\cachesize and set it to 4096 ie 4MB.
They may have also activated the fsreplxfilt filter (In the same storage manager registry branch) also setting the ReplStoreCacheSize to 4096.
I used to have them active and my program memory starting at 20MB would frequently go down to 12mb - now i have about 26MB and after alot of use stays around 17-20MB.
Matt
Here's a link to the Windows Mobile Team Blog which explains where all the memory goes when you fiddle with the registry (either manually or through tweaking programs)
Dear Fellow friends,
Yesterday there was some unexpected error on my HTC MOGUL, and, i had to hard reset my mogul. Then after that i am unable unbale access data storged on my Stroage Card.
When i go to Setting>System>Memory/ In that Storage Card it shows
Total Storage Card Memory: 7592 MB
In Use: 3522.09MB Free: 4069.91MB
also one more thing
When i open storage card through FILE EXPLORER one file naming
EncFiltLog.menc
ANYBODY OUT THERE PLEASE HELP, AS I HAVEN'T TAKEN BACKUP AND ALL THE DATA'S ARE VERY IMPORTANT.
Waiting for valued reply with solution.
try reading it in a computer, just don't format it till you get what you want off it.
sounds like something in the file system got messed when the card was being written too. Had this happen two or three times. Once a battery died when I was doing something, the other time I dropped the phone an it reset.
so backup!!! use microsoft myphone!!! use something!!!!
good luck though - sucks to loose 4gigs of info.......................
I have just got a 16gb sd card which is recognised by my HD2 but copying my files straight to the card from both the pc and via pc cable meant that I have several issues with programs installed, such as jwmd icon changer, my icons all return back to the old ones...
I have formatted the sd card several times...
as soon as I replace the sd card and soft reset it works fine... just not with the 16gb card.
any suggestions?
Thanks
I have searched and tried the suggestions on a couple of the threads...

When you copy the files from the 8gb card, select on your pc to show all files (enable hidden files) from the maps that are in the 8gb card.
Thanks for the advice, unfortunately I had already done that....
I'm wondering if the card is faulty...
I am currently in the middle of a full format rather than a quick format...

Maybe you can test your card with H2testw to see if it's faulty.
I'll try that, thanks
The full format didnt make any difference........
to test the 16gb sandisk I got from a foreign seller on ebay, I used dd under linux, wrote several 4GB size files filled with zeroes, until it was full, and then copied them back to the HD.
Write and read operations went fine, so I suppose the card works alright, and is really a 16GB card (14.83GB really on it due to difference between GB and GiB), and I tested it for max 7.5MB/s write speed, and 7MB/s read speed.
So you could do the same write/read tests to see if all the data put on the card is really there, or if it's a fake/damaged 16GB card
Make Sure to also uncheck 'Hide Protected operationg system files' before copying
Er, I may be missing something here, but, all previously installed app associations will be unusable when you change mem card and you will need to reinstall everything.
My advice would be to install everything you can to phone mem and it will run more quickly and be more stable into the bargain, use less battery and run cooler!

I thought this maybe the case, but having read other threads, other people seem to have been able to do it... also, with previous other phones I have done it...
Hi. have you tested a clone software like DriveSnaphot. Thats the best method.

well... no problem here, I've switched from 8 to 16gb sd on my previous ipaq, simply mirrored the file structure, and all the .lnk files in the menu worked alright.... I do not really see the reason why those shortcuts shouldn't work anymore.

how did you do it? I tried the snap shot idea... no luck.....
I just had a look at the copied folders on the 16gb sd card via my pc, at the top level they seem ok, but once I look into each folder they all have crazy symbols instead of folder names.... this is obviously the problem... but what is causing it?
They are all normal on the original 8gb
Juat to add that they are ok on the 16gb card also until i put them into the hd2....

test the files.
It may be possible that the card is a fake 16gb or defective.
Copy 15gb to it from PC (prferably movies), then copy them back to hard disk on another folder. See if you can still watch all 15gb of movies. If you get errors, card is defective/fake.
There's no reason why a snapshot shouldn't work otherwise.

It's not a matter that they shouldn't work. It's that they often don't.
Some will have no problem and some will. Especially when attempting usage after a flash of ROM or any alteration of registry (dirrectly or indirrectly).
The OS knows the location of associated files and when a straight copy of files is made from one card to another there can be no certainty that the integrity of the file system will be maintained.
You wouldn't rely on your PC to acknowledge a new second Hard drive in exactly the same way as an older one was just by copying the files. There's fat and boot sector implications.
I'm currently testing the sd card with a program called h2testw which writes data to the card to test the capacity etc to see if its been hacked to show a fake capacity... its going to take 90 mins...so fingers crossed its not fake....

ehm, I'm sorry, but that doesn't make much sense
We are talking about file paths here, and nothing more; as long as the memory card is still named "Storage Card" in the device, you just need to copy the file structure over, everything will work. Or maybe everything except those registered programs that check the idenitification number of the memory card to see if they are installed on the correct media.
And in fact, if you mirror your hard drive to another, bigger one, you will have a copy of your previous system...
If you experienced something different, please make an example. Did you mirror the file structure from an old microsd to a new microsd and the system didn't work?
The other user here was having a problem with the file structure being corrupted, that makes sense, but just that...
This was the result.... can anyone tell me what this actually means?...

faaaaaaaaaaaake!
Sue your vendor, he probably sold you a very small microsd card which has been hacked to look like it's a 16gb one.
Either that, or the card is severely defective; anyway, sue your vendor
I got it on ebay for £10... but got the £10 refunded by paypal as it hadnt arrived... then a few weeks later it arrived... so its no loss... just annoying!
