Yes, by all the phone ghods, install HardSPL before attempting to flash the phone!
IF something goes wrong, your chances to recover the phone successfully increase a very large amount.
But PLEASE before starting to upgrade, read a little bit in the wiki about how to flash the phone, the dangers and what to do to decrease the risk. It will stop the homicidal rage building and being released in a mighty rush after hours of having to read and reread MORE information to try and find the answer to unbricking your Hermes. It would be a shame for you to destroy all you love (your hermes...... and anyone in the immediate vicinty) just because you hadn't read some of the useful knowledge gleaned and refined by the gurus of flashing. Any questions you have are probably answered in th posts but if you've looked, cant find an answer and need help, ask away. Happy upgrading and welcome...
As stated above read the WIKI and MrVanx's Hermes Upgrade Guide before doing anything
Hi all,
First time poster, but Ive been lurking for a few months, and joined up a few weeks back when researching a new phone.
Please indulge me. I have done some research, but want to make sure I am correct in my assumptions.
I received my Touch HD today to replace my lost Omnia.
It has an old stock ROM (1.18.723.3 (23358) WWE - dated 11/24/08). SPL is 1.14.0000
I want to update to the latest stock ROM that I downloaded from HTC (_HTC Touch HD_MR_2009_RUU_BlackStone_HTC_WWE_1.56.405.1_Radio_52.62.25.34_1.13.25.24_Ship.exe) using the serial code in the wiki because it wouldnt accept my actual serial number.
I tried to update it expecting an error and got an invalid Vendor ID.
Here is where the assumptions start. Do i need to update the USB drivers by looking at this thread Then use USPL following this thread. Then try running the RUU again?
Thanks in advance
Chris

No need to open new thread. Threads already exist on flashing new roms like this one. All help you require can be found in that thread. Any further queries can be posted in that thread.
Please try and abide by forum rules and post in relevent threads instead of creating new ones

Hello..I know that you said only to post new threads if it is a real problem, and this is!!!
I have my Touch HD for about 8-9 months and i would like to upgrade its ROM to WM 6.5...i've read everything, the wiki, many threads etc, and i have chosen quite a few cooked roms that i liked(about 10), but when i try to flash them i get the same msg: Error [262]: Update error - the ROM update utility has encountered communication problems during the process..
What am i doing wrong?? i dont know what else to do, im hopeless...am i missing any steps?? anything that i have to install before?? im a bit confused to tell the truth...
i would be very gratefull to anyone who can tell me 2-3 steps to do this one and for all..
Thank you very much
P.S: ROM version: 1.56.405.1(43972)WWE
ROM date: 03/06/09

You are being really impolite making a post like this. People here are eager to help, but reading the rules and picking a topic that actually says anything would probably get more responses. Instant support is a paid feature of the manufacturers for good reason. Pushing/Bumping like that here is just impolite and reduces the will for helping to zero.
My suggestion is to read all the stickies in the ROM Development thread about flashing and maybe doing a search on the error you get. RTFM basically. Helped me past all my troubles, but took some time. But that's flashing.
Somewhat proper spelling and punctuation also helps people massively in understanding your problem.
Admin please delete my post if you consider it rude or out of line. Can't judge myself in that respect too much atm.
A quick search for 262 in the ROM section brought me this. HTH. Telstra seemed to have some bad ID or something clancing over that thread. Good luck.
sorry i didnt mean to be impolite its just i grew up in the country and had to work instead of go to school so my spelling and punctuation is some what crap.... im not a dunce at computers or anything just confused by alot of this with not be able to use the hpsl with 1.66.000 and i have to downgrade to 1.44.000 thanks for replying also
haha ciddy u helped me out heaps downloading a old telstra rom back to 1.42.000 should be able to cook it now
hi there all, i`m new to this forum and am really enjoying reading the wealth of information on this site!!
However, i`m lost. i`ve got to the point wher i know that ive got to install hspl2, but after that all i want to do to my HD2 is put the latest, Non O2 variant onto it. i want to get rid of the current O2 ROM as it`s locked out some features that i find useful, eg wifi router.
as i said i`ve got halfway there by downloading HSPL2, but now just need some further direction and guidance.
many thanks all!!!

Read, that. It's a step by step guide. You're very likely to get no response at all from people if you post before you even look at the stickys in a fora. Just a word of advice.
