I have a xda 2 and everytime I try to fire up Tom Tom it comes up with GPS unstable....nothing has changed GPS is mounted behind the screen in the same place. cant seem to get it to recieve a signal
I will mention that I have uninstalled the software and also the bluetooth GPRS & it descovered it quickly with no problems but it will not connect to tom tom or indeed give me a GPRS postition!
Another thing is it possible to search tom tom by postcodes only as it gets well stressed if you dont have all the details
If you get an unstable signal message try clicking to navigation mode, this will sometimes lock on whereas it will not lock on the opening screen. Did it work correctly before? If not it maybe you have a metallic windscreen that is blocking the signal.

Sorry I have just updated the message....
As I say nothing has changed as regards the vechile ie its still used in my merc sprinter van and the wind screen is not an issue as its not been replaced......It was working fine till I installed a tom tom update from what I can remember
Have you tried clicking to navigation mode when you get the message, my xda 2 displays unstable signal until I do this, it then locks to my location and is fine afterwards.
reply
Yes I have the xda2 in the bedroom now with me and the gprs on the window sill......
In nav mode it says gps postition unreliable
found the problem in the gps settings it was setup as a serial port connection on com 1 not bluetooth!
thanks for the messages

I'm new to this forum, and learned a bit too.. Reading all sorts of posts.
Right now my ActiveSync drops connection when i connect the phone, and first now i realized there is a newer version.. So that's maybe a solution for that.
Well...
I am wondering about the GPS control panel icon... It's not there? Then @ HTC's site, i read they have a new ROM to fix that, so i tried.. it worked, the ROM update.. but no GPS icon still.. :-/ (It was the same image version, i remember, but i had a hope..)
Then...
I've been reading about the homemade ROM's. And something about the EXTENDED memory?
Is there a ROM that will give me the GPS icon, and maybe fix some things/bugs - optimize. And have some fancy pancy thingy programs and stuff? Danish would be preferred though..
My first post.. I will try to get better
------
Oh, and something to make the phone like a USB-drive.. If u know what i mean..
------
aaarh, when i would like to download some files, it just opens, and dont start downloading.. why? and maybe a fix?
------
The sync is still connected... the newer version helps..
Will TOM TOM 6 work fine??
aaand, when pushing the "messages" link on "today screen", sometimes i takes tome time to get in.. why?
I hope someone will answer some of my annoying questions
Nothing?
Did I ask TO newbish?
Yes ensure that you are running the latest activesync. Also are you using personal firewalling software, make sure that the network connection is allowed. ActiveSync connects using a virtual network adaptor, with a network of something like 169.254.2.X.
Make sure you have the most recent ROM from HTC installed on your unit, some of the older ROM's don't have GPS enabled.
GPS is automatically turned on by the unit, hence no off or on control. I personally use TomTom on my 3600i. To get it working make sure that your GPS port settings are the same for your device (Settings, System, External GSP, Programs) & TomTom (Check Preferences, Show GPS Status, Configure).
Ensure that you are standing outside for GPS to connect, it may take up to 6-8 minutes for a cold sync (however should only take ~2 minutes).
To check if your GPS is actually working, go to show GPS status, if you see the message "GPS Device Not Found" it's not working properly, check the above steps again. If you see "No valid GPS signal!" this means your GPS is working, however not yet locked on-to satelites (you might also notice the blue and yellow circle spinning).
I'd recommend you don't touch any other ROMs until you have more experience.
You can see your phone in explorer, look under \My Computer\Mobile Device
Messages taking a while to open, no idea, try a soft reset & see if the problem keeps on happening.
For your future posts, i'd recommend asking only a few questions at a time & make them clear.
PS - My settings for GPS that get TomTom working:
Device - Settings / System / External GPS
Programs tab / GPS program port: COM4
Hardware tab / GPS hardware port COM9 / Baud rate 115200
Access tab / Manage GPS automatically (enabled/selected)
TomTom - Change preferences / Show GPS Status / Configure
Other NMEA GPS receiver / GPS baud rate 115200 / GPS in COM9
Hi Steve
Ask less questions, got it... Maybe it was because I'm new and did not now all this existed and a lot got onto my mind at the same time.
Well, the ActiveSync 'problem' is solved. Newer version was the solution.
I checked the ROM date, and is was older than the date they gave on the HTC site, but when it checked the image version, it said it was the same, but i still updated. But still no GPS icon
- My GPS is working though, with TomTom 6
The "Today - Messages" link is still slow. Sometimes i have to tab several times to get it open - quite annoying.
I could choose COM port when TomTom got installed, and that was GPS on COM9, and baud rate was set up from 4800 to 9600. I will try 115200...
A BIG 'thank you' to you, Steve...
Now i only miss the GPS icon

To have the GPS Icon showing up, you'll find the registry tweak in the trinity's wiki.
You can also use trinity hack that can be downloaded in this forum too.
Both can do the trick.
Thx riri22
I'll try something out
I have HP ipaq 6915 Italian, WM5. I have updated the satellite data from quick gps connection. I go out, but the yellow gps icon never turns green. I use gpsgate 2.0 with Destinator PN. GPS is found, but myposition is never found, no matter how many satellites it locates (usually 5-7). What's wrong? Help!
Hi !
Try with this thread

Thats because the GPS need constant signals for it to get the 3D position. It may required a long start before getting the position for first time start up, mine around 30 minutes, after that getting position will be a drift
some tips
Try standing on a large field or something with no buildings in near sight to get maximum signals
Dont move while getting the signals
Make sure that the weather is not cloudy
I really liked the trick with the registry and the gps icon. I can't try tom tom because there is no map available for my area. I use DestinatorPN and gpsgate 2.0. Still the same problem. No position. I haven't tried to stay out more than 15 min. I'll try 30 min or more tomorrow. I hope it works.
Hi !
Did you try go to START menu then SETTINGS then CONNECTIONS and here is the icon QUICK GPS CONNECTION, tap on this icon and then download the newest drivers for internal GPS. I try now the GPS connection and the weather is cloudy and i have got the connection in less than a minute !
Try this, maybe it will work.
Best Regards,
Drahtman
I've downloaded the latest data with quick gps connection. It was the first thing to do. Nothing works. I'm desperate!
Hi again,
If you do the registry hack then you have an icon in your Start/setings/system folder is it wright. If so then you tap on GPS icon and set up your GPS. GPS "Programs" set to NONE, "Hardware" set to COM7 and baudrate set to 57600, "Access" untick the "Manage GPS automatically" thats mean you must disable this function. This is it. You can tray this last option.
Best regards,

Hi
I use TomTom6 with my X1, and it did works fine before. Since a view days I didn't got any GPS-Signal at all. Is there anyone who can help?
Thanks for your help.
Regards, Richard
Simple things to try first:
1. Switch off/on
2. Download the latest QuickGPS file
3. Stand outside for several minutes with Tomtom running
Open up the GPS monitor in Tomtom and you should see the bars move up and down as it acquires satellites. If you see that, just be patient until the bars turn blue which means you have a lock. If you see no bars at all, and maybe a message saying 'No GPS', use the configure option to select the built-in receiver.
Had the same problem and even the new QuickGPS load did not work.
I installed the HTC GPS tool and searched for the Satelites with the "Clear Memory" option. Took a bit longer ~15 Min to get the fix, but now it works fine as well in TomTom
try to disable assisted gps
generally it don't work indoors really try outside
Is there a way to set my Diamond to turn on the 3G connection when I use Tomtom? It turns on when I go into IE and Opera, but when i go to Tomtom it doesn't activate.
Thanks for the help
as far as I know, you dont need 3g or any internet connection for that matter when using TomTom. As long as you have TomTom and the proper maps installed, you can just get all the data you need via your internal GPS reciever.
Ive been connecting to 8-14 gps satellites with the nodata cab installed and all toggled to off, as well as schap's advanced config tool with all network settings to off.
im using 3g connection to get traffic update, you cant receive it with the internal gps receiver!
just try to do traffic update and be sure that the settings are correct ,wap or something instead of your isp
Tnanks for the replies. I could be wrong here and totally off my rocker, but I thought that I get faster signal lock when I have 3G on.
Again, could be way off and I was just seeing things.
djcedric is right about the traffic update. Cvrle1, as far as i know, you are wrong about the faster signal lock. If you use the QuickGPS app via 3G or wifi or whatever data connection you use, it downloads the newest satellite data to your phone, giving a very fast signal lock. After I have the QuickGPS settings it takes me about 1-3 seconds to find all the satellites.
Note that the quickGPS settings are only valid for a week, when it expires you have to run QuickGPS again, otherwise it takes considerably longer to find the satellites.
Hope this helps.
I wrote a program (TrackMe) that turns off the screen while the GPS keeps running. However, on this PDA the GPS disconnects. As far as I know this is the only PDA that shows this problem.
I have also tried with other programs and I still have the same problem.
As soon as the screen is off, the GPS also disconnects.
Do you guys know if there is registry hack or something to avoid this?
Thanks
Don't know about any way of disabling this but can confirm that if garmin xt is running and i lock the phone, it speaks "lost satellite reception" as well.
Thanks for replying.
Yes, I tested Garmin XT and Route66 and I got the same problem.
There has to be a setting or something on Windows Mobile to disable standby state when turning off the screen.
In case somebody in interested on this... if you use the GPS Intermediate Driver instead of a COM port directly, the GPS will not disconnect.
