Hi everyone I'm new here. I would like to downgrade my bootloader from 5.17 to 5.15 but am having some problems with the Wallaby patch. First let me tell you what I'm running:
Australian O2 XDA
Rom upgraded to 4.00.01
RSU upgraded to 4.21
Protocol 32S54
Using the XDA Rom image tool I have written the Wallaby patch to a pretech 128 mb card using the 1k header and diagnostics method (I have tried the 3.5k header as well) the program reports that it was succesfull although I can't see the file under file explorer. When I start the bootloader I don't get any message about upgrading and the bootloader reports Card Key Invalid. When I exit the bootloader it Hard Resets the XDA. I have tried reverting to the XDA Developers Rom and interestingly although I get the same invalid key error on exiting the bootloader it only Soft Resets. I am waiting for a serial cable to be delivered and then will be able to upload the previous version via Hyperterminal (I Hope ?) but it would be interesting to know if anyone else has managed to do this and how they did it.
Great Site
Richard
Hi there Richard - I am also in Australia (which might be of significance too??) and am also experiencing the EXACT same problems as you!!!
I cannot get the Wallaby Bootloader (v5.17) to recognise the ROM Image (via xdarit) and provide the alternate menu options necessary to flash the bootloader?!
Is it perhaps a region specific issue that we Aussies are unlucky enough to have??
I would REALLY appreciate ANYONE who has some suggestions for Richard and I to provide an alternative means of downgrading 5.17 so that we can uninstall PPC2003 (which is way to buggy IMHO) and go back to PPC2002. Thanks in advance guys and keep up the EXCELLENT site!!!!
Hi Mike
If all you want to do is get rid of PPC2003 you could just run the developers V1.2 Rom setup (I have gone backwards and forwards a couple of times) Personaly I prefer PPC2003. I want to get back to bootloader 5.15 so that I have an alternative backup routine in case I crash the device as obviously in order to run a Program A update the device needs to be working. Having said that there is a USB flash program in the bootloader which might allow the Program A to work I just havn't been brave enough to try it yet. Any one else out there tried it ?
Richard
Hey - thanks for that info Richard - okay, so now I can in fact go back to "bog standard" PPC2002 right? Or will it still be running a non-standard ROM?
What I am worried about is that if I need to send this sucker back to Optus(?) for warranty repairs etc. then they may not be too happy to do anything under warranty if they detect that I have installed a "non-authorised" ROM upgrade (if you know what I mean)?!
So you reckon PPC2003 is okay huh? Are you with Optus or Telstra?
Last question - what is the most efficient (and straightforward) way to back up the XDA if A) I keep PPC2003 a little longer and/or B) if I go back to PPC2002? FYI - I have a 128MB SD card and reader (integrated into my Toshiba notebook as well as cradle (obviously) and the USB Sync cable.
Thanks for your help Rickard (and anyone else that cares to offer any advice) :?
Mike
The Developers Rom is based on the latest O2 UK Rom update 3.17.03 (I think) and basicaly they have crammed all sorts of software into the Rom (Survives hard reset and makes better use of the systems memory) In order to go back to standard you would need a "Asian" image (there on a previous version to UK?) which includes "local" configuerators for GPRS etc. I beleive an update is due out soon so once it is you can install this and Optus will be none the wiser.
Yea I realy like PPC2003 much nicer all round but a bit of shame that some software won't run on it. I'm planning to have a go at a "speical" Rom myself based on the 4.00.01 image.
I'm with Telstra but can't see why Optus would be any different apart from the auto configureration.
Assuming no fix for the bootloader arrives (This is by far the easiest) you can back up you're Rom via Hyperterminal you will need a serial cable to do this. By and large unless you're planning to mess around with you're system there isn't much point in doing anything other than backing up you're Ram (As apposed to Rom) with the SD card backup program included on the XDA
Richard
Hi, I've just recently got my self a T-Mobile MDA Vario. This is also known as Qtek 9100, Imate K-JAM, O2 XDA Mini S. The first thing I did was to find out whether there is a newer rom to upgrade to and I landed on this forum. The wiki was informative but still lacking a lot of information which only resides on this forum. After digging the forum for the whole day, here is my summary.
The first thing you do when get your phone is to SIM unlock and CID unlock your phone. SIM unlock allows you to use different service provider on your phone. CID unlock allows you to upgrade your OS rom, radio rom and extended rom. The OS rom is where the Windows Mobile OS resides at, radio rom is where it controls your GSM or CDMA radio protocol. The extended rom is where your service provider does their own customization, like adding their own software, logos etc. You can customize your own extended rom too once its unlock, like adding and removing application.
To SIM unlock and CID unlock your phone, currently I only know of 2 free programs that can do that for you. You only need to do this once since the unlocking info is stored in a different part of the memory then the roms. I must stress that CID unlock will *VOID* your warranty with your service provider.
1) The first one is lokiwiz - HTC Wizard Unlocker UPDATE Version 0.2b. This utility can SIM unlock and CID unlock. It also allows you to lock it back. Thank you very much machinagod! You can get it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=33796
If you can follow intructions its a piece of cake.
2) The second util is aWizard ROM Utils. This ultility can *ONLY* CID unlock your phone and *NOT* SIM unlock. However this tool also allows you to change the splash logo easily. It also can backup and restore your OS rom, radio rom and extended rom independently of each other. Thanks ahlok_hk! Get this here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=37386
After you are done with the unlocking, it is advisable to backup your rom before you do anything upgrades. This is because most of the people here are on contract with their service provider. If your phone breaks and wants to send it for service, it is better to restore it to the original roms it came with otherwise they might say you have void your warranty by flashing third party roms and then you are stuffed.
I have found a few threads that deal with backing up the roms.
1) This thread explains how you can use romupdate.exe and ntrw.exe to dump raw data from the roms to your SD card. This will *WIPE* out all existing data on the SD card so becarefull. You can keep this SD card safe somewhere until you want to restore but then you won't be able to use it. You can use ntrw.exe to copy the raw binary from the SD into a file. You can then keep this file somewhere safe and then format your SD and carry on using the SD as before. To restore just use ntrw.exe to write from the restore file to the SD card and follow the instructions to restore. Thanks arnoldl!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=32866
2) This method is pretty much the same as above except that it uses different programs. This uses a terminal program (terraterm) to get into the phone and use "r2sd" to dump Rom to SD. It also uses psdread and psdwrite to read and write raw data to and from the SD. This also tells you how to be able to reformat your SD after you use it to backup. Thanks Genesis3! http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=43399
3) You can use the aWizard program to backup your roms. Follow the intructions.
4) Button is kind enough to write a program to backup all your IPL/SPL, OS rom, Radio rom and Extended rom. This program is easy to use. You will still need a SD card for this.
Read this thread for more info:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=40347
You can grab the tool from:
http://buttonwashere.narod.ru/
I think this method will backup your OS rom, Radio rom and Extended rom. I'm not sure whether it backs up your IPL and SPL. There is a bug in SPL 1.06(bootloader) *thanks Button for the hint* it will give you an error if you try to restore from the SD using the ntrw.exe/psdwrite method. The workaround is to install an older rom with SPL 1.01 such as the first Qtek Prodigy rom. Then you can restore your rom. Using the method where you backup your rom to SD and keep it there until restore is not affected. I recommend getting a 128MB SD since its relatively cheap. Its worth buying one just for rom backup.
Now that you have unlock and backup your roms. You can start flashing new roms to try out!
ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/Wizard
You can find many different roms under the Roms directory. This roms usually are all in one packages from the OEM such as Qtek, I-mate, O2, T-Mobile etc. The ODM is obviously HTC. If you want localization for your language just choose a rom your language eg:- RUU_Prodigy_2080702_102_11310_QTEK_FRA_Test.exe for french.
These all in one packages comes as an executable which includes the flash program and the OS rom, Radio rom and Extended rom. Just click and install. To get your settings for your network GPRS settings, you might be able to find a *.cab file which has the settings in your original extended rom and copy over to the new extended rom. This only work for 1.x roms, read below for more info. You can get UK network operator settings here
http://www.htcclub.net/en/settings.php
It seems that the most popular roms are from Qtek and I-mate. This RUU_Prodigy_1060701_101_11310_QTEK_WWE_Ship.exe seems to be recommended by most. This rom is the 1.x series. There is a newer 2.x series of roms just recently released which includes the AKU2. From what I understand AKU2 is like a service patch for windows. It includes DIRECT PUSH email functionality (similar to RIM's Blackberry) and AD2P which is stereo bluetooth support.
At the moment non of the final released AKU2 roms have AD2P. If you need it, the Qtek 2.x beta testing rom does include this functionality. You can find this on the ftp. Another downside to this newer roms is that the Extended rom seems to be locked and you won't be able to access it. No one has yet found a way to crack it. These newer AKU2 roms have fixed the wifi bug which showed when using WiFIFoFum wifi scanning program.
Linux
I just had a chat with the linux developers for HTC devices on irc. It seems the wizard running with the OMAP750 processor does not have enough documentation and is not well supported in the kernel yet. But the development on the HTC Universal seems to be going well. As for syncing with windows mobile 5 and linux, the synce project currently do not support WM5 yet, they just started a new mailing list for it. If you have any experience in reverse engineering please help. The only solution now for me is to install windows xp on vmware and sync from there. Then you can export your outlook as a file to be imported into your favourite Linux app. Linux cannot read the mini SD in your device, so you will need a card reader to read and write files to it.
This is what I've found out so far after spending the whole day digging the forum. I shall add them to the wiki so other ppl who don't have that much time to spare can benifit from it.
I have a few unanswered questions. What is IPL? What is SPL? I sort know its something to do with the bootloader. Does using "r2sd" backup my IPL and SPL? It not how do I backup my IPL and SPL? If I upgrade to the 2.x series roms, will I be able to restore back to the 1.x series? From what I've read, you can restore from 2.x back to 1.x but the IPL and SPL will still be 2.x, is that correct? Thanks!
Hope this helps someone. Those threads above should really be made sticky. The search never turn up what I need. I had to slow dig my way thru.
regards,
vaxen
I was considering starting a 8125 Standardization Project, much like the SX-66 Standardisation Project. I'm am just not sure I have the time.
Nice walk through BTW. You sum it up rather well
I wish you posted this 2 days ago, then I wouldn't have had to do all that digging to figure it out. It is easy once you see the BIG picture though eh?

great overview. Thanks a lot !!
Really great overview! Posted the URL to my Expert Blog at http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&title=great_tips_for_htc_wizard_users&more=1 for even more exposure.
will a 512mb minisd be enough to back up everything before flashing to a new rom?
Thank you
Excellent timing just started the process myself.
oo3: Yes, 512MB is more than enough for backing up your rom. If you use a 512MB to backup your rom and write the raw data to a file. When you restore, you need a 512MB card to write the raw data back to the card. I personally bought a 128MB card just for backing up the rom. It only cost me £10 to buy it online. Its worth the investment.
good overview.
Might be worth to put it on the wiki
One flaw: ExtROm of all ROMs 1.6.x and above are locked with no real solution yet.
For the 1.6.x roms you could try to fiddle with versions in order to (one time right) make the ExtROm you want.
For the 2.x ROMs even this is not possble until now.
The aWizard tools are said NOT to be working on the 2.16.x (final aku2) ROMs they do work on the 2.8.x (beta aku2) ROM from QTek.
At this moment buzz_lightyear is fiddling with my spl to try to get the EXTRom unlocked.
The SD backup/restore process works really well btw.... I just tried a restore of the original Cingular Rom on another demo 8125 and it turned it back into a pristine stock device.... Cingular will never know we "had our way" with so many of their demos now
Backup Restore and Upgrade Rom!
What a summary. Thank you for your effort.
Upgrade question
I've just backed up the existing ROM on my new O2 Mini S, thanks to this wonderful post. Before I proceed to an upgrade, could someone please tell me if I should leave the SIM card inside the wizard, remove it, or it just doesn't matter during the upgrade? I'm planning to go for the O2 AKU2 rom. Thanks.
Blokade
It just doesn't matter during the upgrade
Um. The OMAP can run linux. Linux is a supported OS for the OMAP. The problem is the rest of the hardware (lcd, etc).
i SO want linux on the wizard. 4x6 font and console :d
ftp a no go
can someone please help as i can't get into the ftp via the link provided
Re: ftp a no go
This overview should updated : the latest lockwiz 3a can also do the latest Tmobile-NL ROM with IPL/SPL 2.21 !!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=50768&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
A more detailed instruction to unlock can also be found at http://www.mdahacks.com/item/2006/6/7/unlock-your-htc-wizard-mda-8125-phone-using-lokiwiz
Does this also work for the CIngular 8525 or Dopod 838 Pro?
Does this upgrade also work for the Cingular 8525 also known in South Asia as the Dopod 838pro?
No. Look inside of the Hermes section for that device.
--eluth.
Great overview, I would hope that future visitors or registered users read through it and save themselves and others a lot of headaches. On that note any reason this isn't getting stickied?
@The SOundshark
If your running peerguardian you might want to dissable it, or if your running any other type of firewall. For the life of me I can't configure peerguardian to allow FTP access, so try that and hope it helps.
Hi all,
Im new to this Universal forum since i recently got my MDA PRO ( Universal or JASJAR) from ERA mobiles-Poland. I have a few questions and would appreciate if anyone of you masters could answer them for me.
1. Firstly why do all the programs work so slowly??? I assumed that adding some new softwares slowed the system down but did a hard reset and found that there was hardly any improvement. i previously owned a Himalaya and it was much faster with the same software as in the MDA PRO. How can i change this and make more memory for running applications??
2. Is there an option where i could answer a call via the speakers by just lifting the screen of the phone?? i often answer a call with the hood closed and have to open the hood and press the "Speaker On" function before i can use the function. Im not sure if anyone has had this thought and a solution has been found.
3. I managed to download the new ROM from this forum and tried to update it on my machine but got an error " Invalid device" - Kindly contact your operator for the right update. my question is how can I update to a new ROM when running the maching with an excisting one? my device is from an operator in Poland but i would like to upgrade to a new ROM.
4. Lastly is it true that updating the device to a new ROM will increase memory and effeciency of the device or is a ROM update only developed for certain regional functions and software setting??
5. My last question is on my device desktop i can see 8 unread emails. when i select this the machine totally hangs and i have to do a soft reset. is there some way i can change this and reset the problem. Also can anyone tell me how to uninstall a email account once it is created?
my device information is :
ROM Version : 1.20.37 WWE
ROM Date : 12/04/05
Radio Version : ------ ( No information)
Protocol Version : ------ ( No Information)
ExtROM Version : 1.20.129 WWE
Hope to hear a reply soon as i am dying to make a few changes.
Venk
1. to fix most of your problems, upgrade your ROM.
2. Might be better to get a bluetooth headset. Preferably stereo one if you listen to music.
3. If it doesn't belong to the maker of your device (like you bought a QTEK and wanna flash an IMATE ROM) go to the wiki.xda-developers.com It is all explained there.
4. Increased efficiency. Maybe better memory handling but not necessarily more memory.
5. Upgrade the ROM and it will erase everything, even the 8 emails. Just make sure they are not there when you synchronize. Maybe the rom update will help.
P.S. Your ROM is almost 1 YEAR OLD!!!!! Pls. upgrade.
I keep on getting a country error when trying to do it, even though I've used the unlocking program on the XDA. What do I do?

What Unlocking program? For Country ID Errors, there is a topic on this, PLEASE USE THE SEARCH BUTTON!
Hint: Use MaUpgradeUT_NoID.exe
The guys at :
http://buzzdev.net/index.php?option=com_simpleboard&Itemid=59&func=view&id=19287&catid=45
have this file:
http://buzzdev.net/components/com_simpleboard/uploaded/files/Prophet_ext_rom_unlock.rar
- unpack
- copy it over to your device
- run it
This will make your ExtendedROM writable, NOT visible.
Use TotalCommander CE to display content of your ExtendedROM for now (by entering "\Extended_Rom")
Sometimes, files in ExtendedROM are marked as READONLY and you have to clear that bit.
Does anybody has a good description of each file present in the Extended_Rom and if we can delete it or not?????
After readin that whole thread it seems some say it works some say it does not.
Can anyone confirm it works with the latest Submitter Cingular Rom? I do not want to have to reinstall everything again
I just got things perfect from the last Hard Reset I did.
I tried it on my 2.08 Qtek rom. Does not work (YET as Buzz is still trying!)
This was merely a test version btw.
I flashed my Qtek s200 with the lastest dopod rom (from the ftp page) then did a soft reset just before customisation begins (preventing the extrom files from loading - I don't use MMS or smartdialing).
Copy buzznet's prophet extrom exe onto your device and run it (You should get a little popup saying "success"). I can't view the extrom files and the memory settings are still the same but my system runs a lot faster and I've gone from having to do a soft reset almost twice a day to once every 5 or 6 days!! (I run a large program thats eats up RAM).
It seems so much more stable, reponsive and quicker
Hope this helps......

This is why this stuff gets dangerous. The s200 is not the same as the Wizard from what I understand. Folks read things like this in what is a Wizard specific forum and think it's really working. On the buzzdev forums they seem to say it works on Prophet based devices and not on wizards.
That is why I asked here on a wizard specific forum about anyone having success.
From Bootloader / ROM structure perpective the Prophet and Wizard are said to be similar.
Buzz has developed his tool without any of these devices so hes still in a test phase.
Worked For me
with the last RRU Qtek IPL 2.15 Radio 2.30
Thanks

XDA II
Hi guys
I tried it but it gives me message that it is not a valied Pocket PC application
the ExtROM version is 2.06 from PDAMobiz.com
Hello,
I flashed back to Windows Mobile 2003 SE after having windows mobile 6 installed.
The only problem is the camera does not work, There is no camera option in the menu, and when I press the camera button nothing happens.
The OS I flashed with is WM2003SE 2.06.00WWE XDA2 from the buzzdev website.
Any help?
Thanks.
sounds like you dident put in a new extended rom where the cam software autoinstall from
I searched on the forums for extended rom and found this :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=221732
So I put contents in my STORAGE, as per instructions, and now I am flashing, is this the correct way?
One Question, is there any newer WM2003 SE ROM avaliable for himalaya than WM2003SE 2.06.00WWE?
Edit : Nothing happened I still do not have camera, and I also notice My XDA II splashscreen is not showing up, instead it is a blank screen, probably some firmwares I flashed with earlier messed everything up on my himalaya.
Edit 2 : I manually looked through the extended rom contents and found the camera and installed it and a few other programs, but I get error "the program you have installed may not display properly because it was designed for a previous version of Windows Mobile software" nonetheless it works
extended rom is a nbf file like a real rom it include a list of cab files and a text file which list the cabs
after a hardreset it auto install all the cabs
you dont need to flash a nbf file (it's don the same way as a normal rom buzzdev prob got some)
about 2003SE then it's a bit of a bastard rom
it was never released (as far as i know) as WWE (world wide english)
but only as chineese and was manualy translated to english by fans (heard that there are still chineese bits around in the rom which display as garbage chars)
about a later 2003SE then there was another chineese rom 2.11 or something like that
but it was pretty unstable so never translated to english
personaly i were to drop wm6 wm6.1 or wm5 and go back i would go to wm2003 not se
version 1.77 as it's more stable so unless one need the rotate without a softreset (which is pretty much the only thing i recall SE offering )
About the EXTrom, i was never able to get it to install after Hard Reset, I have to manually install the cabs myself, ussually I remember my pocket PC would say "Please wait until your device is configuired" , then it would install a few things. But since I have began flashing with all sorts of firmwares I cant get the extrom contents to auto-install after hard reset, so i have to manually install them myself. And you are right, I am seeing weird garbage characters already after instaling the MMS programs from the extended rom contents.
But I do remember the first time i went to WM 2003 SE, which was a few years ago, I got the ROM from the offical o2 xda website, and it was perfect. But thats not longer available.
As for WM2003SE, I always thought it was an upgrade to 2003, I thought that SE (Second Edition) should be more stable.
I might just flash to WM2003, not second edition, do you know where I could find the ROM + Extended Rom contents for it ?
yeah it's 2th eddition
but wm is not more stable then the drivers and 3th party stuff
the rom have in them
also heard about a wwe 2003SE but never confirmed that it was around
maybe if you google deep and long enough you can find it
about official 2003 roms for himalaya then first place i would look would be
the ftp of this site they may still be there
2th would be around at buzzdev
3th would be on the sites or ftp's of o2 / tmobile/ imate and the likes
4th would be googling around
Ah the problem is the XDA Developers ftp site is not working. I looked over at buzzdev and they have no WM2003 Roms for the Himalaya, only WM2003 SE
Ok from XDA Developers ftp I find the following :
1.60.36 T-Mobile_NL_Shipped
Himalaya_T-Mobile_NL_1.72.903_eDsuBsofT
Himalaya_T-Mobile_NL_1.72.90_Shipped
Himalaya_T-Mobile_NL_1.75.903_eDsuBsofT
Qtekk_1.75_Converted
I believe they are all WM2003 (not se)
Which one to use?
