GlobalSat SD-501 GPS will not work with S100, please help me - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

Hi guys!
Just learned of this forum, it might be my last chance.
I bought the GlobalSat SD-501 GPS secure digital receiver in Hong Kong. It was a big gamble and it turned out to a headache.
After installing the thing you are supposed to be able to see which comport it has received using the nifty utility "GPSInfo" from GlobalSat.
It is supposed to identify itself as COMX: MANF-0501-CARDID or something similar.
... but after loading the program I see the following:
COM1: Serial
COM2: Serial_Cmd
COM3: IrCOMM
COM4: BTIBserial
COM5: BTOBserial
COM9: Serial_Data
That is, nothing that resembles anything what I want. I tried to force select one of the following ports but of course that didn't work. There are also 3 different drivers to test, the one supplied on the cd and two on the developers site, found here:
http://www.globalsat.com.tw/english/download.php?level_id=3
I have tried all three drivers with no effect. I have also tried soft resetting after install and even a hard reset to see if that would solve any issues.Along with the drivers there is also a program called COMKiller that disables comports (after surfing found out that most IPAQ's tie up all comports leaving nothing for the GPS), I tried this as well with no success.
The LED on the GPS is supposed to blink when it has your location fixed, the device actually does that after a while so it seems to have a working hardware anyway - it just won't talk to the phone.
From looking at other forums it seems as this device work for people running the S2020 (the Himalaya) so maybe there is hope.
In summary this is what I have tried:
1. Tried all three drivers available from maker.
2. Soft resetting.
3. Hard resetting.
4. Upgraded ROM to the version described below.
5. Disabled IR (incoming beam).
This is what I have:
Qtek S100
ROM: 1.06.00 WWE
ROM date 01/06/05
Radio version: 1.05.00
Protocol version: 1337.39
ExtROM version: 1.06.115 WWE
Model NO.: PM10A
Maybe there is something in the driver that is trying to access the S100 in the wrong way, maybe it is trying to force select a busy comport. I don't know. Please you kind devs and others, can you maybe take a look at this?
best regards
Kristian

I querried this forum about this about a month ago and had no luck.
I have an o2 mini. When i plug the sd501 into the mini The light doesnt come on. My friend has JAM. When I plug it into the jam the light comes on but still i have not been able to get it to work,
If you find a solution please post

Could any of you smart devs please take a look at this, I would be eternally grateful!

Hi Kris,
did you already try on the forums you can find at www.pocketgps.co.uk ???
IMHO that is the best-gps-experts website; if nobody can help you there, you can put your receiver in the recycle bin
Sorry I cannot help you some more

Hi,
yes I have posted in that forum too - awaiting response. But I am sure this is solvable, it's not rocket science. Well, for me it might be but I know there are some seriously smart people here eager to give support
/Kris

being a bit a GPS expert myself as well as an S100 owner I have not found a solution so far to get this combo to work, which I guess is not that bad at the end of the day considering you lose the SD slot for storage unlike with say a Bluetooth GPS. I will certainly revisit when they send me the SD-502 with its 512mb RAM, small helix antenna and SIRFIII chipset for testing in a few weeks ;-)

GpsPassion -> Do you have some kind of relation with GlobalSat? If so, have you had any comments from them if they will try to make this combo to work or not?
I mean, I like the device and it would suit my needs quite well - and I bought mine so I must decide if I should sell it or if there might bew a solution sometime. Do you have any contacts?`
best regards

Hello Sd 501 "victims",
searching through the net I ended up at this thread. I also would like to run my sd-501 with my magigian. Is there really no solution to that problem?
Stefan

hi
the drivers arent installed properly you should have on there manufactors card under the com ports. reinstall the drivers andf it will work are you using the disk that came with it as the drivers you down load dont seem to work.

Nice to see an old thread coming back to life. I for one never managed to get the 501 to work on an S100 and the 502 is following the same fate, looks like some SDIO issues at HTC...http://www.gpspassion.com/fr/news.asp?id=410

just signed up today and this is my first post! anyway i am having the same problem. i have been trying to get the globalsat sd-502 to talk to my Qtek s110 without any joy depsite expansys saying it is compatible.
i have tried the drivers supplied and those on the globalsat website. it cannot see any com ports other than those mentioned earlier in this thread.
i do know from a local guy who tried to help me out that he managed to get it working with his xdaii which was not comaptible but he failed to help me out on with the qtek. i think this is one that globalsat will need to look at.
its a shame because it locks on to satellites just as quick as my globalsat bt-338 but wont suck the battery dry as quickly the bluetooth does. i will be interested to here if someone comes up with a solution.

Sorry to hear about your problems - but, what software are you trying? A good freebie is VisualGPS CE, and does work with the SD-501 (i use said GPS reciever with my Blue Angel).
But unfortunatly, I think this problem is purely a HTC problem, not global sat. Remember, they made thier device compatible to the BSquare SDIO Now protocalls - if HTC decides not to follow that , then it is not GS's fault (though, it is odd that they would support the SDIO on devices like the II, IIs, III, but not on other devices..)

Divine im using tom tom 5 but as far as gps programs ive used both gpsinfo and winfast as someone on the pocketgps site suggested. yeh it probably is something that htc need to look at.
thanks to a bit of browsing on here ive downloaded a trial verison of phone alarm which allows me to use a single press of tghe tom tom icon to activate the bluetooth and tom tom in one go. exiting tom tom switches the bluetooth off and the phone so i can power the device down. this will keep me happy till someone comes up with a solution.i am going to return the sd-502 to expansys and ask them to remove the qteks110 compatiblity reference on their site

Help with Com-Ports / GPS Device

Hello everybody !!
I am a newbie with my 02 XDA II device and also new to this (great)forum. I've learned quite a lot about my PPC on this site but now I've got a problem I wasn't able to solve yet:
I recently bought a Royaltek 2000 Sapphire GPS Device (Sirf II chipset) which connects by wire to the serial port of my XDA II.
When I first connected both devices it all worked out with the Software I installed for testing (GPS Dash/VisualGPSce).
Due to problems with my car cigarette lighter (from which I get the power to operate both devices) which I tried to fix - I might have damaged or destroyed my GPS device.
I always get the message that com port 1 cannot be opened.
Now I wonder whether this is because I might have destroyed my gps device or because some other program is blocking the com-port (as the software suggests).
My question therefore is: How can I find out whether or not any other programs are blocking my com-ports. Is there software out there to check on the Com-Port status ?
I just wanna make sure that the problem lies within my GPS Device before I throw it away. If you know of any method to test the GPS Device's functionality itself - I'm certainly interested in that as well.
Thanks in advance for any advice on my problem.
Go to settings/connections/beams and make sure the incoming beams box is UNCHECKED.
Thanks for helping me with my problem. Your advice worked out fine. I didn't expect this problem to be solved that easily. Thanks folks !

Holux GR-230 + Destinator 3.075

To All
I’ve been using the HOLUX gr 230 for more than a year in my XDA II using Windows Mobile 2003 and Windows Mobile 5.0 with Destinator 3.075.
I never had any problems using it.
Last month I bought an i-mate JasJar that comes with original Mobile 5.0.
The Bluetooth seems to work fine because I’m using a Jabra 250V and if I turn it off and turn it on again, Windows recognize that the Jabra is on and work fine.
As you see in “display_2.bmp”, HOLUX work fine in the JasJar, with Destinator 3.075 see on “display_5.bmp”.
But, if I turn off and on again, It appears a message on the display: Cannot open the COMPORT as you can see on “display_1.bmp”.
Why it appears a “?” on the left side of HOLUX? (as you can see on “display_3.bmp”).
It the “display_4.bmp” you can see the HOLUX is working in COM 4.
Have somebody already tested HOLUX GR 230 on a i-Mate JasJar, or similar product using Windows Mobile 5.0?
Best regards,
Jose
This might be a slightly 'dumb' question, but - how did u manage to work fine with WM5 for a year, when it only came out officially just a few weeks back?
IF u did actually use WM5, and not something else branded as such (and I am giving u the benefit of my doubts here) - then MAYBE it was an unofficial and/or unfinished product/version, which might explain your current problems.
I have just bought the Holux 236 which I assume uses the same drivers as the 230, and also had some troubles, but haven't really manged to find time to deal with it yet - If I have any solutions in the near future I will let you know.
Good Luck!

I'm sure I'm doing somethong wrong but I can't get my Exec to pair with my Globalsat 338 Bluetooth GPS receiver
I can detect the globalsat easy enough but thats about it
Any help would be much apprecaited
Many thanks
RON
Ron, have a read through the info on this link, there is also a link in the text back to this site where there is additional info. If you follow it you should be able to get it all to work, I managed - Mike
http://www.pocketgps.co.uk/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=28171
Would have helped (OOPs)
Mike
Hi Mike
Worked a treat it was the reg edit that sorted this out
I can't beleive that we had to go through this just to enable GPS
I suppose once I upgrade the rom I'll have to do the same again
Many thanks
RON
Ron, perhaps if enough of us complain to O2 about the missing link GPS ICON (and explain how to put it back on) then they might include it in the next ROM upgrade, so far there is no update avail from O2 - unless you are going to put something else on the device - Mike

Bluetooth GPS, T-Mobile MDA... May God Make This Thing Work

Ok I've pretty much tried everything, been browsing the boards for over 6 hours for solutions. I've tried everything and just flat out can not get my Bluetooth GPS to work with preetty much any software I've tried. Using the T-Mobile MDA USA model here with Windows Mobile 5.0.
I did the registry tweak and managed to get the GPS Icon in my connections section. Messed with all the settings there, no luck.
I'm using a Ambicom BT-GPS that I used to use with my IPAQ 6315. Worked flawlessly with IGuidance but no luck. The MDA see's the device, successfully pairs the device. But no matter what settings I try to use I just can't get anything good to happen here. Should I abandon the Ambicom GPS? Is it just not going to work with the MDA? Should I try other software? I'm not all about shelling out bucks for software that I'm not sure is going to work.
Is anybody out there using a working bluetooth GPS setup with the USA T-Mobile MDA? What are you using, what are you running and what hoops did you have to jump through to get it working? I don't mind spending a little bit of money if I know it's going to work.
You did not state which model ambicom gps receiver you have but have you tried the updated drivers here for wm5?
http://www.ambicom.com/support/installation/gps/index.htm
hope this helps
Sorry bout that, it's the basic 1.0 version, BT-GPS...
Apparantly they don't let me download it because I don't send them enough money. That only works with their version of the navigator which is basically the IGuidance software re-branded. I do however have the 2.1 version of IGuidance.
That may be your problem then - try to get wm5 drivers for your device - not sure where from.
I am not a gps expert but few of the readers have praised the holux 236 gps and works with the wizard - and has the new gps chip
see here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=44567&highlight=gps
For some reason, my first Holux GPSlim 236 did the same thing (Mapopolis this time). Surprisingly, an exchange did the trick. If you have a friend with a PDA, I'd suggest he try it too and see if it isn't a bad unit. That's the way I found out.

I have had a huge problem with getting GPS software to work with my MDA... the only marginal success I had was when i got Tomtom Navigator working with my Holux GPSlim 236. At first it didnt work, and I thought I hit a road block. But I switched the outgoing Com ports and got it working. But then I realized that I only had the Great Britain maps, so i downloaded the California maps, but the software wont work. I gave up on Tomtom and am going another route. I really cant get it working. Here is the link where I got the software for Tomtom. All other programs wouldnt work because there is an incompatability with Windows Mobile 5.0. This file works. http://thepiratebay.org/details.php?id=3410079 Good luck.
Going a bit off topic (and not very helpful), but i was amazed to find out the BT Handsfree and BT GPS works at the same time
I'm dead happy to be able to talk and use TomTom at the same time. Everyone i asked said you cant use to BT devices at the same time. Great stuff.
Yes I do enjoy the fact that BT handsfree and BT GPS work in conjunction on my Wizard... really nice.
As for the original poster's issues. I use iGuidance with my Wizard (8125) and it was a bit confusing to get going at first. This is what I had to do.
1. Pair the GPS and the Wizard
2. Select the Com Ports tab and set up a new OUTGOING port, it should default to com6. I would uncheck the secure connection box as I don't think you have to have a secure connection to your GPS, but thats just me. If it doesn't work try checking it.
3. In IGuidance select the tools, GPS options, COM Port, and set it to com 6 just like it defaulted to com 6 in the settings above.
4. Tap the GPS icon and see if you have data streaming over the BT GPS connection. Hopefully you do!
I find that iGuidance is a bit strange in that it wants to hit the GPS on the port so it actively goes to the GPS it just does not sit there and wait so that makes things a bit strange. Also you most likely need the 2.1.3.2NA version on your MDA. All other 2.1.3 versions have an issue and won't display the 3D view at all on QVGA devices... its a known issue that they have fixed in this version. Annoying as the DVD did not have this version on it and I ran into the problem and was annoyed until I went to their site and found the issue fixed.

MDA compact tomtom 5 cant see my GPS - please help

Have spent a long time trying to get my tomtom5 navigator working on my mda and now have it all going lovely - however I cant get my bluetooth reciever to be seen by tomtom. It is one of the BT-77 one that you see loads of on Ebay - did used to have it working with my old phone but not this one?
Any ideas - cant give up now!
Thanks
ROger
I have the same problem with an xdalls with a BT338 bluetooth gps.
I can get it to pair up. Tomtom5 does not see it though. Been thru all the settings that i can thing of.... i have the blue light flashing fast and then just logs off.
Paul
I have the BT-77 (also from ebay) and it works perfectly with the TomTom 5.21 software...
I had trouble with it initially too- it's to do with setting the right COM ports.
To get things working, I downloaded and installed Pocket Bluetooth Tools:
http://www.bluetooth.jazztel.es/ Download version 1.0.1.2
Delete any existing pair that you may have with the GPS receiver...
Re-pair the device with the above software installed, and now you will get an iconic menu, use the serial port option and select an available COM port. Complete pairing procedure as per on screen instruction.
Now start up TomTom and go to GPS options in preferences- select 'other bluetooth device' and now you should see the something called 'BT on COMx' x being the port you assigned earlier of course. Complete configuration.
Wait for the receiver to get a fix and you should be ready to go.
I've used the Pocket Bluetooth Tools many times on different variants of the Magician and has work everytime.
Hi
thanks for the info - but still nothing
cant cope anymore
will buy a whole new system i think!
Thanks anyway
Roger
HELLO!
Well at last it works - not really sure why?
But I dont care it works!
thanks for the help
Roger
Hi!
Just registered to try and find out how to get my MDA II working with a bluetooth GPS and I find this thread. Thank you for the link to the bluetooth tools it seems to have worked a treat.
Cool. Glad it is working for you guys.
The software also works well with using Bluetooth and ActiveSync.
