The instruction book tells me to attach the charging cradle to the A/C power source for charging the battery on my 2020. However, it 'appears' to charge without the A/C adapter. Is this an erroneous reading ? I mean, why attach the A/C adaptor unneccesarily ?

I think one trickle charges and the other rapid charges, I am not sure of this but making an educated guess.
it can charge using the 5volt 500mA that usb give
but not all pc's can give those 5volts from usb when they are turned off
plus i think it charge slower when it can only get 500mA

I'm off to Glastonbury and would like to be able to charge my Magician while I'm there. I've got shed loads of 2300mAh NiMh batteries and four connected together gives pretty much bang on 5V (5.2V no load).
So if I just stuff that in the USB hole on the bottom of my Magican will it charge OK? I know that USB is only 500mA but the mains charger claims 1A. I think I can get away without a voltage regulator since the voltage is so close but I don't want it drawing too much current.
Any thoughts? Anyone tried this?

I have a mini usb lead with me but not the exec charger. Can I just plug this into an IPOD or Blackberry charger and will this charge it?
I think you can without problem...
However, there is a small issue:
The usb standard specifies a maximum 500mA current for the usb supply (over 5V), but to charge the Universal in a reasonable amount of time more is necessary (The supplied one is 1A)
I succesfully charged the battery using a motorola psu, and in the same way you can charge it leaving it attached to the PC usb port.
I am pretty sure there is no risk for the phone but it is possible to overload the power supply - you better check it does not run too hot. Also, put the phone in flight mode and turn it off, to minimize the amount of total power used

Not sure which ipod charger you talking about, personally i use the original one from apple (white with the USB plug) and it wks fine. The original charger for universal also has the same current rating of 1A @ 5V so I guess it shouldn't overload it.
Yes, I charge my Universal with a BlackBerry charger from time-to-time.
Keep in mind what TheDayOfCondor said about the original charger putting out 1 amp while the BlackBerry charger is only rated for 0.5 although I haven't had any issues.

I bought a Himalaya from ebay that cannot be charged through mains charger...
Although it can be charged through the usb cable..
I tried to charge it with its cradle connected to the wall charger and it's not charging. If i remove the battery and put it on the cradle it's charging(the battery only). Also, i tried my blueangel's wall charger and it's also not working with this himalaya. (it should?..)
So...now i'm charging the device through usb...either with the cradle or just a capable usb cable.
I think that there's a problem with the connector of the device...but i wonder why it's charging on usb and not charging on mains charger.
The best solution that i can imagine is to open it...measure the pins with a multimeter and then short-circuit the usb charging pin with the 'faulty' one...
Any other ideas?

Thanks for the reply. I have already tried to alter the connections on the charger. I short-circuited pin 22 with pin 13 and it was charging. Altough...when i tried to solder the short-cirtuit i destroyed charger's connector So i'm afraid to solder something on the 2020's side.
Is there a way or special soldering iron for such jobs?.....
My conclusion about himalaya's charging system is that it's charging from pin 13 when connected on usb but it's charging from pins 20,21,22( not sure) when connected on a wall charger.
For now, i'm using a usb wall charger by connecting the usb cable on it.

Could you please give me screenshoot of that PIN connect to wall charger ? Which PIN in the himalaya mainboard .. connect to what Female PIN on wall charger ?
My Himalaya 22 pin choped so can not possible to charge on spot.
I can only charge the battery by remove the battery and charge on seperate charger.
So when my himalaya power is over I have to take the battery out on it and charge it on the general charger...

Ok I recently found my TF101 losing the quick charge capabilities, so I went on and on to find the rootcause, the charging cable at the end of the tablet has some tiny broken piece at the round plastic part and it's no way to defect the cable..
Another issue, my 15month son once time chewed the charging cable over the proprietary connector side while the plugged in the wall (no harm since it is 5v, 2.1A), it was wet but hair dryer did the job
After that I plugged the charging cable to the ac adapter, tablet...but now the thunderbolt charging icon won't show up but charging very very slow (called trickle charge) - 12hr for 100%...
Lucky for me, my co-worker uses TF101 too, so I borrowed his ac and charging cable to test...FINALLY, it was the charging cable
So everyone else,,, I guess if you suspect your AC Adapter fried or something, just try to charge your phone, if it works, it works - the charging cable can be defected and degraded so it will charge fast or slow depending the CHARGING CABLE as well - it's ironically found but I now had to believe CHARGING CABLE is also another factor in this equation rather only AC Adapter itself!

I wouldn't recommend plugging in any other usb rechargeable device into the Asus AC adapter because it outputs 10V if I remember correctly.
Unless you KNOW the device you are plugging in can handle the output voltage from the ac adapter, DO NOT PLUG IT IN because you run the risk of frying your device.

It uses a USB3 pin to detect the TF, and ups it to 15v at 1.2a. Unless it can detect the TF USB3 pin, it only outputs 5v at 1.x or 2.x amps (I forget the exact number).
I had JUST finished reading about that in some other thread and was coming here to correct myself. You beat me to it by a few minutes.

You let your 15 month old son crawl around unshielded power sockets and plugged-in power cables with little enough supervision that you couldn't stop him before he was already chewing on it?????
At home I have an iPhone 5 charger and a Blackberry Bold 9900 Charger along with a Cooler Master Battery Bank. The out put on the battery bank claimed 5 Volts 2.1 Amps but when hooked up to my HTC One it showed USB Charging. I hooked it up via my iPhone 5 charger which has an output of 5 Volts and 1A and also got USB Charging but when I hooked it up via Blackberry Charger with an output of 5V / 750 mA I got Charging (AC) on my HTC One. Looks like it won't accept any higher power input than what it needs for faster charging.

The maximum current is drawn when the battery is empty. The first phase of charging is constant current, where it will draw up to 1A from AC and 500ma from USB, then moves to constant voltage, where the current will drop off. Your battery is probably too charged to be drawing max current.
HTC phones switch to AC charging when the data pins on the USB are shorted, otherwise it's USB charging.

I need to double check which USB cable I had used. At work now but just saw that the USB cable I had at work was the Blackberry USB Cable and when I hooked that one up with my new HTC ONE I got AC Charging on my HTC ONE. A sales person had told me that the USB cable can make a difference at times. Will try messin around with a few wires along with my Cooler Master Battery Bank to see if the results change.

I find that the charger it came with charges it fastest. The other chargers I have used are my neuxs 4 and gs4.
The phone is looking for a 'short' across the two data wires, I believe. The HTC chargers have this so that the phone knows it's not a USB port that isn't able to deliver the current. I'm surprised the blackberry charger fooled the phone to think it's AC.
