I know a few people around here are carrying Tabs around on a day-to-day basis and I was wondering what people's opinions were of the practicality of using the Tab as a primary device, to replace a phone as opposed to complementing it.
I'm not looking to carry two devices or to pay for a second data SIM, so without being rude I'm not particularly interested in how well the Tab complements other devices, only in how sensible an idea it is to use the Tab as my main phone.
I mean, I know that if I were to get the Tab, I'd probably need a spare handset to use on the odd occasion when I didn't want to or couldn't take the Tab with me but when I could take the Tab, I wouldn't be looking to carry a second device at the same time.
This all ties in to a thread I started in the 'General' section addressing the general issue of what phone to get.
I think of the options I mentioned in that thread, that I'm drawn most to the Tab because it would best suit my needs/use but the size/practicality is, understandably I feel, a concern.
Anyway, any/all feedback will be greatly appreciated.

I use it as a phone every day with a BT headset and have no problem whatsoever .
The only occasion I will not use it as a phone is when I go out and I need something that fits in my pocket without sticking out.

You're not alone. It's reasonable to use a bluetooth headset 1st, speakerphone 2nd and holding up to your ear 3rd. I predict 7" will be the new trend, large enough to make it easier to read but still pocketable in a man's jacket or lady's purse.
You can't hold again your head FYI. the earpiece isn't there on the tab.
clubtech... where did you get your unlocked phone and what did you pay if you don't mind sharing...
I'm looking for the least expensive unlocked quadband phone and so far the lowest price is ~$900 US.

I use it is my primary phone and though it.is a bit cumbersome i dont mind it.

You can hold it to your head, you just need to put it upsidedown as the speakers are on the bottom of the phone, and when you use it that way the microphone will be right next your mouth.
I used it in this way a pair of time, you just need to lower the volume as the tab will automatically go in speaker phone mode when you don't have a paired bluetooth or wired headphone.

I just wonder how are you using it as a phone!
I live in the U.S.A, California. And my understanding that the Galaxy tab can't be used as a phone! The Galaxy tab is being release here with in 2 weeks!

US models can't be used as a phone, EU ones can.
It's unclear whether the difference is hardware- or software-related.
So it's maybe possible that a US unti could be modded to make/receive calls or it may be impossible. Alternatively, you could procure an unlocked EU unit but you may have issues regarding network compatibility depending on your provider.

The short answer is: Yes. You should use it with a wireless/Bluetooth headset.

i got mine today, hopefully can use it soon enough since i'm on a remote area now
Devices with phone capabilities and multitasking will change the world.
Now, I can have Skype, Nimbus, Fring or whatever, running in background and ACTICE.
That means i can also receive calls without while the application is in the background.
From now, my availability on the VOIP equals the availability on the phone and the answering method is the same (Skype on the computer requires headset)
This means i will use VOIP more and more.
The idea of paying a voice call depending of distance is so obsolete !!!
Traditional telephony will decline.
I hope, in 5 years, the traditional telephony will be like analog telephony today
I believe that in few yeas will pay only a data plan, and telephony and TV will be over IP.

I live in the U.S.A, California. I'm waiting to see if ATT or T-Mobile Galaxy tablet can be used as a phone!
I hope there's a APP that can be added ( like a VOIP app )can be used to work as a phone! I want to purchase the Galaxy tab , but I needed to work as a phone also! I know there's many people that need this also.
I just don't why !!! Samsung didn't allow the tablet to be used as cell phone here in the U.S.A.!
There is, apparently, an unlocked North American model that will arrive early next year which should, I think, allow calls.
The reason why none of the ones being sold by the various US networks will make calls is that the networks do not allow it.
If you want to apportion blame, then the bulk of it should fall upon the networks.
It's hard to see the logic behind that decision. Voice and data plans tend to pull in more revenue than data only plans, I can only imagine that the networks think you need to be forced into carrying both a phone and a tablet, when in reality most would choose that anyway.

Hi, I'm not really sure how the GT works. Can I for example put a normal phone sim in it and use the data allowance on that sim?
I use internet, games and multi media first on my devices and calls way, way second so I think the Tab would be good for me as an all in one device but I cant get it on a normal phone monthly contract just a stupid data one. My plan would be to buy it off contract and then get a "3" sim that comes with unlimited data and free minutes and txt. Would this work ok or is there another device better?

Hi,
It is possible to use it as phone but it's not very handy because of the bigness -> not comfortable to hold while phoning. But for games and movies it would be no bad solution.
But I would buy a netbook, you can do much more with it...

I understand what you mean but the most important thing for me is all in one device. Even if its crappy as a phone that's fine as long as i can use it. The way i see it is with a simple blue tooth head set it doesn't really matter what size the device is.
The Galaxy Tab is the perfect all-in-one device at the moment. I'm enjoying mine too much, actually.

Pretty much everywhere outside North America, the Tab ships with phone functionality enabled and no carrier restrictions except for SIM locks when bought under contract.
I presume the OP is in the UK, in which case they'll have no issues doing as they plan. I travel frequently in Europe, and tend to swap prepaid data and voice SIMs in and out of the Tab regularly without issue.

Hello!
I am from Germany and am using the Galaxy Tab as a full mobile phone and mp3Player replacement for 4 Month now! The only Point is, that i have to choose jeans with enough big pockets to fit the tab in!
So when you say, that calling is at second priority, then i really can recommend it to you!
I just love this over sized phone. Lol. When I bought my tab, I had to buy a sling bag so that I can carry it around and with bluetooth, I had no problem taking my calls. Emails and messaging on the go is now normal to me. Anything that I will need on the go, tab works fine for me.
Of course if you think 7" is a bit large, go for smaller phone like galaxy s. Comparatively, if you need better power, go for laptop or netbook but as you know it, they are heavier.

The battery life of the GT is even a lot better than some laptops.
Bluetooth headset with screen is fine, but it's kinda big to carry around all the time.

i hesitated at start if to replace my Nexus one with the tab, and after doing so i don't regret it one bit.
it is by far the best device i had in terms of usability, the big screen allows me to see clearly and quickly without having to concentrate on what i'm searching for.
have an A2DP bluetooth headset, wearing Jeans most of the time so have no problem putting it in my back pocket.
I am so happy with my purchase. A friend of mine grabbed one off craigslist for me in Ohio and mailed it down. The screen size is stupendous! I am just enamored by the amount of real estate I have. I was worried about the picture quality in comparison to my Vibrant, but it doesn't seem as drastic as I thought it would be.

If you dont know how you can use multirecoveryflasher in the android dev forum to easily install streakmod to do that

Oh simple streak is already installed on top of it?
It's one of the functions of a custom recovery, lets you restore to a previously working copy that you made earlier if something breaks.
If you have simple streak installed you prob already have streakmod installed
I bought it off someone on craigslist so it's possible. Is this good or bad?

It's simply a custom rom, for the charging part are you sure the cable is snug? Does it look damaged?
It is not an easy slide in kind of friction, but nothing obstructs entry; firm.
How do the pins look inside your streaks? Some of mine seem recessed at odd intervals

I'm having the same problem with my streak. It will only charge to 75% maybe and will constantly flash charge/discharge while plugged in to my wall, computer, or car charger. I have four different cables so its not the cable and I have two different batteries. good thing I bought a external charger with a second battery. I think my problem is with Simply Streak... it could be yours to.

Long of it short. Dell got me a battery and cable in 2 days. It did not fix the problem so a new replacement Cincy Bell phone is en-route to my place. I ve heard they have poor customer service, but it seems fine to me.
EDIT: Problem solved it wasn't locked again.

could you hold off on flashing stuff to it when it arrives? I'm still curious about the rom on it.

Yes I can. They are sending me another Cincy bell model. I refuse to accept an ATT one and run Edge. I could've bought one new for next to nothing if thats what I wanted.
In re: Recharging problem; I found out that in order to recharge my Streak I had to use only the Dell OEM USB AC adapter. In addition to the Dell OEM I have several AC adapters/USB cables (Blackberry, Motorola, Apple) none of which will supply the correct voltage/amperage for the Streak.

I have found this phone on amazon for 150 dollars and have decided I want it. However, I cannot afford a data plan nor do I need one. So I was wondering if there is a crack or bypass with the activation screen and can just use wifi? Any help is appreciated, thanks!

I originally bought my DVP from Dell (without a contract) and happily used it on Wi-Fi only for several months, so you should be able to use the Wi-Fi without a data plan. Just slip your current SIM card and go to work.

I'm guessing this is a question specifically about AT&T forcing a data plan on you otherwise this wouldn't be an issue. Either that or shirtlessrabbit4 had a Palm webOS device, which is the last handset I remember which required a data plan to activate.
I don't know how AT&T checks if your using a proper smartphone, unless they just reference it against a database of IMEI numbers of AT&T branded phones. If that is the case, maybe you should buy a T-Mobile Dell Venue Pro, having a IMEI on record with only T-Mobile?
T-Mobile will require you to have a data plan, too... a pay-as-you-go $1.99/MB data plan. If you switch your data connections off in the settings, you won't have to worry about these insane charges, but you also won't be able to send MMS messages, even though MMS data is not metered.
The best option may be Simple Mobile or Straight Talk which have prepaid $40 and $45/mo monthly unlimited plans, respectively. Each "unlimited" plan has an actual data cap of around 2.5GB/mo. I don't think you even need to have your phone carrier-unlocked to use it on either MVNO, but DVP unlock codes are essentially free now anyway.
I noticed that there are a number of ebay sellers with "buy-it-now / or best offer" listings around $150 for condition new DVP handsets, so you could potentially score a lower price. Keep in mind that ebay buyer protection ensures your satisfaction, even if the seller does not accept returns as a policy.

So I meant more like no activations at all and no plan, just the device and on a wifi network. I guess in the open I should've said I can't afford ANOTHER data plan, and I surely don't need another phone number, just want to use a dvp without charges

You might want to consider getting an HTC HD2 or a Samsung Focus. Seems like all the custom ROM development are on those devices. With the HTC HD2 you can dual boot Android ICS and WP7.5 Tango (with sideloadability, lots of mods, or non at all if you prefer.) The Focus is a standard Galaxy S handset with Windows Phone on it, and is easy to sideload apps on using WindowBreak.
Unless the keyboard is the draw to the DVP, I'd go with one of them.

Well the dell is cheaper and has the keyboard and a decent sized amoled display, so that's what caught my eye as well as price. BUT..... I will go for either of those if thats what it takes to get wp7 without a plan of any kind. I also saw the HTC arrive but more expensive........ could that work for what I want?

You can use any WP7 handset without any kind of voice or data plan. As far as price of the Samsung Focus, you might want to check used ones on ebay. I once bought a used Samsung Focus for $60 in perfect condition except for the broken SIM card reader. That kind of thing would be perfect for you. The Super AMOLED screen of the Focus is better than the AMOLED screen on the DVP, too.
Since you're interested in the Arrive and the Dell Venue Pro, I assume you're dead-set on a keyboard. All I can say is that if I didn't use my keyboard for text messaging so much, I'd definitely abandon the DVP in favor of a thinner phone.
Hey, so I'm a sales rep for a large mobility provider in canada. I have a Nexus 4, but because we do not carry this phone, I'm not allowed to demo the phone in store (duh), and requires me to have one of our carried phones active during selling hours.
I don't really want to have to swap my simcard twice every day I work, and was wondering if there was any guides or info on cloning a Version 3 sim. Ideally, I'd like to shut down my Nexus 4 at work and then turn on another phone (probably will use my old HTC One S during selling hours), go about my day, and then after work shut down the One S and boot up the ol' Nexus 4.
Some people might say I can just use the One S in airplane mode and use wifi, but then I miss out on texts and stuff (allowed to text/go online during work hours if no one else is in the store). And I can't really have my nexus 4 on the sales floor.
I know that my company probably would can me if they found out I cloned a sim, but the way I see it is if I never have them both online at the same time, it's exactly the same as me just switching the single sim between phones.
If that doesn't work/isnt currently possible (i've googled a lot, haven't found many things that look like theyd even have a 10% chance of working), i was considering changing my Nexus 4 IMEI to my HTC One S, so on the account level it looks like I'm using my HTC One S, and I'd talk to my boss and see if that is enough and I can just use my Nexus 4 on the floor when no one is around. Is that possible? Would that gimp my Nexus from receiving updates? (it's currently stock rooted, if that helps.)
I understand these questions are sort of shady, but I am by no means using them for shady purposes, and I can provide a paystub to verify my employment if that would help, or if someone wanted to just PM me info on this, i would be greatful and send some money your way for a beer (paypal).

You're right. SIM and IMEI mods discussions are prohibited at XDA, but you should have no difficulty finding other info sources. I always recommend the Sysmocom site, as the money goes back into research. They are some of the guys behind OsmocomBB etc... Good luck.
