I would say either t-mobile or Orange as they use each others network if you lose signal and at no extra cost.

exchanging the signals. is it for calls and messages only, or is it for gprs & 3g also.

GPRS & 3g also as far as i can tell.....
The reason they did this is 'i suspect' because there coverage is crap.
They don't seem to like investing in signal stations, even with the T-Mobile deal my experience of coverage with Orange is not good, but they are cheaper then most.
I will be dropping the Orange plan like a stone as soon as the contract is up, and am switching to 3-Net.
This because no matter where i, or people known to me go with an Orange phone there never quite seems to be a strong or stable signal, this T-Mobile Orange interchanging, to me seems to have made little or no difference, i think they were broadly sharing the same stations anyway, to me it just looks like marketing, 'we have more coverage because we work together' rubbish, in fact the opposite seems true.
It works with everything. Can't fault it tbh. If you choose t-mobile, you just text yes to 2121 and wait for text reply and phone auto changes network when needed. I'm on T-Mobile but have phone set to use t-mobile_Orange manually as it better signal and get full 3g coverage all time at no extra cost.
I was with 3 but signal started dropping off every so often then nothing. Called up to query it and was told that 3 stopped paying orange to use their network when weak signal so managed to get out of contract .
This won't happen with t-mobile orange as the 2 firms merged in Sept 2010.

Whereabouts in the Lake District are you? My experience is that Orange seem to be the best network in the Lakes. I'm from Preston btw so this is only experience from the many visits I have made.

Asda Mobile (vodafone based network) is the best so far. In area's where i live is loads of black spots and i can still use my phone, its funny watching people on a train going HELLO HELLO f**k and i am still chatting away they are cheap too 8p per minute to all phones and 4p a text.
I'm with T-mobile, they give me a generous 1GB internet buffer, and ACTUAL unlimited texts. Signal's usually fine, as people have said, you can share Orange's signal. It is 2G ONLY though, so no 3G. Although you can still get EDGE or something like that for 2G data, it's really slow though.
The problem with o2 is you pay x pounds a month for 500mb or 1gb of data and if you go over it it is 3 pounds (can't find the icon on this gingerbread Keyboard - anyone want to port the HTC one to a galaxy tab?) Per MB whilst on T-Mobile you get unlimited web browsing but there is a 500 MB fair usage for streaming video (YouTube) and downloading. Files (you can wait until you are on wifi) and they stop you streaming and downloading when you reach 500mb and don't charge you from what I read on their site. Try getting a payg. Sim and seeing which network. Has best coverage

if i remember it should be for calls and texts only, i think you may be charged for data usage, mind you that was at the beginning of the year and knowing t-mobile they like to change there T&Cs with out telling people so i could be wrong
hey guys over UK.
have u got any 3G networks with unlimited data usage (download).
if so, can u add a note of cost per month.
T-mobile is deffo 3g and no charge for data when on orange network. I queried this. Was 2g only to start but now 3g and data included. Been in since Jan and never charged any extra. I'm contracted T-Mobile and use orange most of time as its better signal out in the sticks

I can also confirm this.
3s one plan is unlimited data for 20 a month sim only

I`m on T mobile payg and got a"Booster" which is unlimited internet for £20 for 6 months, and as previous posters have said there is no problem anywhere I`ve been with the signal.Just switch on roaming and the phone picks up the strongest signal, although by default it goes for the T mobile one.
And as mentioned before there is a fair usage policy for the data, but I think you would have to be using youTube heavily or something similar to get a problem. In my local T mobile shop they said they send you a polite letter asking you to cut down first, but if you persist using heavily they would then limit you,but as i only do the occasional browsing and e-mails it has not bothered me
any VODAFONE UK members.
how is the network. is there 3G and what about data plans.
I'm on t mob and for me the signals always fine check out the company's websites for covrerage checkers...
I get (for £10 a month)
100 free texts - although its always unlimited cos of flexible booster!
100 min
Unlimited data
That's a win right?

Update: for 2 years.
Anyone using the Atrix on Roshan? Their data is crazy expensive so I want to make sure I never use it. I will be using an unlocked ATT Atrix.
Chances are you wont find hardly anyone on this forum from there, just disable data and you should be fine

Hi there, if you delete all the apn's in your Atrix, there is no way you gonna accidentally use data. You need to register your imei for gprs access anyway. If you don't register, you won't have access. They don't even have EDGE ...
You don't want to do that anyway, it's down half of the time and super slow, more so than satellite. The other provider (AWS ??) is not better I heard ...
Not there right now, but I was in KAF a few months ago.
[Edit]: Since you won't need 3g and the only things to do with your phone over there is text messaging and listening to music/Radio (there is a lot of FM stations from UK, CAN, AUS around camps) I suggest you get a "disposable" phone with a FM radio.
You might find APNdroid useful.
I am in Bagram. Really don't care for IOGlobal and was hoping there was a 3g carrier here to replace the AWCC folks and their funky Edge stuff. No such luck so I will be stuck with IOGlobal. Looks like you can't buy a AWCC SIM on BAF anyways so doesn't really matter.

Any new news on using the Atrix in Afghanistan? Going there soon, I want to use it for everything else but a phone. I seems like I can put it on airplane mode and wifi at the same time. Has anyone tried this?

I have, you have to put it into Airplane mode first, let it disable everything and then enable Wi-Fi, I do this when I stream netflix on my phone just so I don't accidentally sell my soul to AT&T.
Nope I have you beat by a year. But yeah I just used roshan and edge. I was in kaf as well and used the Canadian free wifi when I needed skype.

Has anyone got a Xoom on this? It's the carphonewarehouse Vodafone network, it's significantly cheaper but wanted to know if you get the full service as if you'd gone direct to Vodafone?
Comparisons here:
http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/mo...OTOROLA-XOOM-3G-PLUS-WI-FI-TABLET/MONTHLY/NEW
I've had no issues with signal compared to my 2 proper vodafone devices.
I too have my xoom on this network and find the internet experience to be equal to the true vodafone network

Its good here. I may ditch orange on my desire soon too!
Another happy customer here, never heard of them before I bought the Xoom, but no problems
I went for the unlimited data plan for £25 and have to say very happy with covetage. The xoom seems to pickup a good 3g signal even when my Vodafone hand set jumps in and out. Coverage map is useless on their website though, been around south wales and all down the south coast with no signal problems.
Location by network gave me one issue by St Ives putting me 10 miles away from gps location (didn't check my phone against it). Google account sees the device on Vodafone network. Only wish I could use my vodafone sure signal with it as it covers more of my place than my wifi.
Only thing I would say is be sure you want a xoom, not tried anything else but an ipad and I'm happy, my concerns are life expectancy of the xoom over other tablets. With lack of support and information regarding updates worries me somewhat now. Don't know if I'd been better with the htc flyer or even waiting for the Sony tablet due soon.

Thanks everyone - seems like it's an ok option.
Agree about deciding on the Xoom, not really an Apple person though and have been waiting too long for the new Galaxys.
Me too great service good price with talkmobile

I was very happy with Talkmobile, as I'd had no issues til a few days ago. Lost internet connection completely, yesterday my Xoom was back on the network but still no internet. Would be nice to have an explanation at least!
ive been getting fantastic hsdpa speeds of 6mb while I barely get an O2 signal on my Desire! I just wish they would hurry up and push the 3.1 update!

yes
carphones talk mobile xoom deal is great.
voda network is by far the best 3g-H in my part of the uk
FTW !
works great here on unlimited option which I use to connect to my slingbox. Habe also rooted and updated to 3.1 and over clocked tiamat kernel.
Talkmobile +/-
With talkmobile i had to pay £229 deposit.... and they asked me to fork over another £150 to remove the content lock...
I find there CS is quite pushy towards direct debits... on 8 occasions they have asked me to set one up yet I declined (ha ha), never missed a payment with any company XD
But on the other hand there CS is good at resolving queries and work a charm. The device is unlocked which is great and I can pop my 3 SIM card in there with 15 Gb access all areas internet.
What are your thoughts on this Talkmobile?
Talk Talk are gash

Dude, phone Talk Talk now! My friend had this, and after a load of investigation it turned out that despite having an unlimited data package, talk talk were actually billing him for data, and he had a bill for £281 which in turn had led to his sim being blocked! If he hadn't phoned up they would have automatically debited him in a few days, and then probably would have had a major battle to get that cash back.
Number is 0800 049 4401 for Pay Monthly queries.
Ok, so I put android on my brothers HD2 back in April and everything has been great up until two nights ago.
While using his phone as a router to play Xbox live (as he often does), we could no longer connect to the phone. After rebooting the phone we could connect to the wireless but not to Xbox live.
Well, ran a speed test and came back horrendous. Ping in the 700's, dl at 8 KB/s. The tests haven't been any better the last two days no matter where he goes.
I've tried a bunch of fixes I found here on xda, with the apns, *#*#4636#*#*, etc all to no avail.
Do you guys have any other ideas on what I can do? Thanks for help

what network provider? do they allow tethering? its possible if they dont they have found out and blocked a data connection
He's on T-Mobile. But could they even tell? He's only been using it for the last weekend, so I don't think he's in the top tier of data users yet.

Hi all, great site! I have used the search facility and viewed dozens of threads ( as well as searching google) and can't find an answer, so my first post is going to be a question.
I was given the Verizon Samsung 7.7 4G LTE as a gift, but was hoping to be able to use it as wireless only as I am in the UK and we don't have 4G and I don't actually want to use any Sims with it.

You'll have no issues using it as wifi only! I do it with mine.
Do get a VZW sim (free in store US or 3-5 dollars online ebay) so you can disable mobile data (Packet Data). This'll help you get battery life almost inline with the wifi P6810. There are ways to disable the com services but you'll get 2 FC's anytime you reboot which are annoying.
And enjoy the 7.7, easily the best tablet out there as far as im concerned.
If this helps, I can disable cellular packet data separately from wifi, just leave that off, tablet doesn't care.

One could:
1) Remove the sim
2) Reset the tablet
3) During the startup wizard specify wi-fi only
