After I picked up the MDA I noticed that occasionally, while attempting an EDGE connection, the radio would appear to reset. Signal bars would disappear and the dots under the antenna would appear. The data connection would never take place and as far as I could tell the radio reset. This occurred several times in the course of a day. So did a hard reset on the phone which I hadn't done since picking it up. Now the symptom appears to have changed. Instead of it appearing to reset, it appears to "stick". Indicated signal strength never changes, the data connection is never actually made and eventually I turn the radio off and back on again via flight mode. Again, this only seems to happen while attempting a data connection, either EDGE or GPRS.
I've written Tmo support but I'm curious if this has happened to anyone else or if it may be a problem with my specific phone. And never having had a problem like this before, should I take the phone back to the store and ask for a replacement or do I need to hear that from Tmo?
Thanks!
I have a Cingular 8125 on TMO network and have the basically the same problem. GPRS/EDGE would occasionally stop working. Once it begins to "hang", I would notice the radio icon lose the bars and the dots would appear. However, It would reset on its own after a minute or two. This happens a number of times a day. Annoying the crap outta me.
The MDA ships with an older version of the radio rom. Maybe it would help if you updated it.

yeah, that's the one. I'll see what Tmo has to say, I'm sure as hell not flashing a phone that's days old and well within the warranty period. In the off chance it's software, I did another hard reset and prevented it from installing the extrom stuff.
update: Customer support asked me to try another SIM, which I did. When that didn't help, they told me to bring it back and they'd give me another one. Hopefully that'll be the end of it.
hi,
have the same problem. I just "loose" the signal and it searches, searches .... and again. SR or flight mode on/off usually helps. but its really getting annoying. I have feeling it is in places where there is a weak signal (but just opinio, not a proven fact). Sometimes happens, sometimes not at all. Dont know what to do about it.
I've noticed the same with the Cingular 8125 on Cingular's network. The radio version is 1.09.11. I am wondering if the later radio version would make a difference?

I upgraded the Radio rom on my 8125 to 1.13.10. I *think* it helped, but to be honest, it still happens. I also now, as a habit, turn off GPRS by pressing the red button for 5 seconds. This seems to help a bit too.
It's really a crapshoot. There are times when I can stay connected to GPRS for hours and hours, while other days i would get kicked within minutes. When the 2.8.7.102 rom is officially released, I will load that in hopes of fixing this problem.
I've had this same problem for months no matter device I use. At first I thought it was because I was using non T-mobile branded phones, but since using devices like the T809 as a modem and the MDA I get the same problem, edge/gprs would connect and stop working/hang after while. Most likely its a network issue, and this didn't start happening to me until T-mobile released edge data service. I'm actually a sales rep for tmo and haven't heard anything from tech support.
I've not had it happen with 1.12.10 (I think) - NOT the 1.13 version, but the one before it. Flashed it the other day - perfect since. The stock T-Mo radio ROM did it once in a while, usually in a poor signal area.
Old Problem
This happened on my Treo 600 on T-Mobile. The problem seems to be city-specific, so it happened in Pasadena frequently but not in DC.
hi, i just got the tmobile MDA and everything works perfect, i dont seem to have the problem of the GPRS, the only problem i have is that the sound of the phone is too low. any suggestions?
P.S. whats the website to download updates and softwares for it?
thanks

Yep, that was my experience exactly, I haven't had a problem even once since flashing 1.12. Thought about trying 1.13 but didn't want to push my luck. The phone seems to be 100% now.
Hi,
I have a big problem with my Tytn (sorry if this is already been posted). Quite often the phone freezes, making it impossible to turn on again. The only thing that works is a soft-reset. What is worse, is that when the phone is in this state, although the green light is regularly flashing, it is unable to get phone calls even if the caller gets the normal ringing signal. No trace is left of the call, neither in calls list! This is a really serious issue: please, let me know if you have an idea of how to solve the problem.
Thanks!
I am having the same issue. I haven't been able to isolate it. I was havign to0 restart 1-2 times a day. Same systems press the power button nothing. Lights blinking everything looks ok. but nothing on the screen. and i miss calls. really pain in the ass. I loaded mobile secretary and it hasn;t locked in a day or two which is odd.
I also sometimes have to rpess the power button two times for it to wake
me too
It's happening to me too. I will lose service and the phone doesn't go out and poll automatically when service should be good. It may show 1, 2, 3 bars then when I try to make a call it hangs, and then get an x and a Y!, then searches for service. I have the GSM only hack installed and the activesync workaround and it still does this. It is not useable as a phone.

With all due respect, there is no solution where the link leads to.
I am having the GSM problem also. Just from time to time I am noticing an exclamation mark near the 'antennae' icon in the top bar. When I tap it, I read 'Service unavailable' in the balloon. From that point I may either soft-reset, or switch GSM flight mode on and off, which brings the PIN code keyboard and the phone works again.
I really don't think it is related to power saving, as it happened a few times in the car with TyTN on external power.

I think warmkiwi's link may be relevant to jimwormold's original post, which may not be related to your and angled1's problem of failing to poll correctly after dropping it's signal.
Mike
yes, it was. sorry, i should have quoted the original author (jimwormold)
well, sorry for being so picky on you :|
Now when we have defragmented the conversation I wonder if the GSM problem is reported more widely? and what is supposed to do in order to isolate the problem and fix it...?

Sorry to do a "me too" posting, but I experience the exact same symptoms. There is no obvious pattern to when this happens, but it is a major problem, as there is no way (other than trying to switch it on) to distinguish whether the phone is working or not at any given moment.
I am running the latest (South African) ROM on my Vario II.

Given this thread now appears to have two distinct issues running together I better be clear that I am referring to the lock-up/freezing issue not the dropped GSM signal issue!!
To be honest there are quite a few possible causes for the freezing issue(s). I would suggest searches and the wiki on such things as (and you may or may not have tried some already):
1. Use of a Task Manager to properly shut running programmes otherwise they contiue to run in the background
2. Proper shutting down of Active Sync in addition to any task manager you may have, as it can re-start itself automatically (particularly overnight. Look for the "Fake Server Trick")
3. Always shut down Wifi when not in use (vital particularly overnight but also good practice to avoid lock ups)
4 For overnight and possibly other quiet times you can consider having your device automatically perform a soft reset to clear any running programmes that may block alarms/receipt of mail etc. Look for such things as xbar or SK schema

Yes indeed, although I think that both: a Phone App problem, and a GSM signal problem, are indeed the same, maybe only differently percepted and described by users affected.
I need ActiveSync to be running in order for DirectPush to work. If it conflicts with the phone, it makes the device unusable concerning push email functionality.

I agree they may be cause and effect for some folks. Although I don't believe we can say that all the freezing and lock-ups are due to dropped GSM signal and freezing when failing to re-establish it. The items I list either taken together or individually have been found by others to work in some cases.
I appreciate that if you require Active Sync running then this is not a solution for you. I think the issue of crashing on loss of signal requires more analysis and I'm not aware of much discussion of it - though I could be wrong!!

I was fiddling with the phone yesterday and today, and I have a hypothesis that my problem is related to PIN entry screen that won't pop up but is silently awaiting a PIN underneath.
I was trying to ucheck the "Require PIN when phone is used" box in Settings but with no luck, my PIN is then refused with "Unknown SIM Error" message. Maybe it wants a PUK but I don't have it on hand to try.
My plan now is to:
- uninstall all Phone-related applications (PhonePlus, Dark_Blue Buttons, EZDial),
- request PUK from my office and try to uncheck the box,
- try prepaid SIM card which has no PIN
To observe symptoms I need two-three days, so I will rather not be posting until solid data is collected.
ps Mike, it is a pleasure to be on a board with people like you.

new phone
I'm on day 2 of my replacement phone from Cingular and the problem with losing gsm signal is non existent. The problem was hardware and fixed by calling and getting a warranty replacement phone. I'll let you know if the problem returns. Oh, and I have not been using the gsm only hack. I'm trying to see if the phone will work as designed first.

Good news - hope it continues to work well.

I am reporting from the test field that my problem persists, despite uninstalling all phone-related extenders.
I have noticed that freezing is paired with disabling Bluetooth. So after switching the phone off (flight mode on) and back on (flight mode off), I also have to turn on Bluetooth.
EDIT: I was grounded for last few days at home and freezing problem was not occuring. I am now thinking that it may be related to switching band between GPRS and UMTS. My next step will be disabling UMTS for good. It saves a whole lotta battery, by the way. I am for the third day mostly on standby, with a few calls made, and I am still on 70%! (no 3G in the area)
I have contacted my vendor and asked about replacement policy, they are "checking this with the importer". It's a beauty of living in not-so-western country. Poland is the name.

I'm having exactly the same problem, very annoying because the staus LEDs keep blinking as normal. I too think the problem is UMST-GPRS switching related, as I also have problems when phoning while I drive with my car from a UMTS enabled into a GPRS only zone. The voice call is interupted and I get a loud noise, sounding like a scrambled voice, on both sides of the connection. At home my UMTS signal is very weak, so I think it happens when I move around the house to a place where the TyTN switches to GPRS.
I've put my TyTN to "GSM network" only now to see if this helps, but I use UMTS frequently so this is no long term solution for me.

same problem here, only gsm wil not help, new sim cards wont help either even other provider wont help

treid several different roms nothing will help
good luck
Hi,
mine was siffering of freezing issue, I sent a mail to HTC support, they don't know about it but the guy said me that I must to hard reset my device. Then no more freezes, I will keep testing it.
Regards,
Taguapire.
BTW: I changed my old and almost destroyed SIM card by a new one.
I've had my wizard (cingular 8125) for just a little but over a year, but this past month I've had some abnormal issues with it.
I've dropped this phone a few times, but randomly this past month I have noticed a severe amount of service dropping in different forms.
Sometimes I'll be on the phone and it will randomly drop and start searching for a signal, in a well serviced area. Sometimes I'll be texting, and it will have service(2-6bars, enough for texting) but it will refuse to send the message, and when I try to call, it says invalid sim, and I have to reboot.
Sometimes If I am lucky, when the service drops it will pick it up within 20 seconds, it can take up to 5min, and sometimes I have to restart it.
This phone has been stock up untill this problem started (no rom flashing/anything) I tried unlocking it and trying different roms on it recently as a last ditch effort to fix this annoying problem. If anyone knows of a solution to this problem, I'd be really appreciative of it, otherwise im getting a new phone
While my first instinct is to convince you to sell me your otherwise functioning phone on the cheap, I must resort to being the good guy (or else get spanked by the mods...)
There is a registry fix for the kind of signal dropping you're describing. I'm surprised you went for so long without experiencing the problem. I did almost right away when I got mine last year. You should try it first, if you haven't already...
I think this is the one I used:
http://www.pocketpctweaks.com/pocketpc_tweaks/fix_drop_calls
i don't think its a Rom problem,as signal reception is not depended on the Rom,its an OS,rather its more depended on the Radio Rom (GSM) of the phone.Usually,by upgrading the Radio Rom improves the signal reception quality.Instead of flashing different roms, try to flash different Radio Roms and check if it improves the signal quality.
But,here,I think, perhaps, the problem lies more on the hardware part then the Radio Rom. as you say,it has been dropped a couple of times,it may be the the External Antenna cover has lost proper connection with the Internal antenna connection.Check the fastening clips which snap in to secure the External antenna cover to the internal are properly secured in and have not come off, are not loose or broken, which might be causing it to not having proper connection.
Cheers!
Well i tweaked those settings and tore this baby apart, and honestly the service was dramatically improved for this entire week, untill thursday, when service began dropping and it began to start telling me my sim was invalid. So I'm kinda lost here, it seems no one else has had this type of issue....
And on a sidenote I am unable to connect to gprs or edge to send pictures via mms. I noticed this after I started flashing different roms, so I think its software related. I did however download that .cab package floating around that has all the cingular media net settings. But when I try to send a picture my phone just seems kinda lost lol
bump!
I reflashed the rom to the official htc cingular rom, and that fixed the edge/gprs issue, but service is still bad.... Id like to try some different radio roms before totally giving up hope on this thing, but this site has seem to take down its ftp.... anyone have any wizard radio roms uploaded? preferably ones that work well with cingular/ at&t here in the US.... thanks
bump... guess no one has any ideas=(..... but since the ftp is back up ill try some radio roms
I am really sorry to say that i face a strange problem with my HTC TOUCH with original rom during the past 20 days. The FM radio reception got very bad having as a result to receive 2-3 weak signals instead of the full list of nearly 50 stations before (we are always talking about the same place and with the reception double-checked with other devices too) Additionally, the signal strength bars are often moving like crazy or blinking like disco lights even in "no FM signal" cases!! I did not install any new software or made any change to the rom. I tried to fix the problem with the "HD tweak"'s option for radio improvement, BUT WITHOUT ANY LUCK!! What is going on? Is there an FM radio hardware problem that leads to phone's replacement (telephone and GPS are working fine, though)? Should i do a hard reset? What would you recommend? Thank you in advance for your reply!!
same thing happened to me too last couple of days. Did you fix it?
Hi all,
Having a bit of trouble with my rooted 32b HTC magic, my phone constantly loses all signal despite being in areas with great coverage. On occasion, it will gain a slight (one or two bars) amount of signal, however this generally disappears before I have time to make use of it. I have searched the forums and discovered this appears to have happened to a few other people, however i could not find a solution. I have tried rebooting, switching airplane mode on and off, and did a factory reset, all to no avail. However, interestingly, after my factory reset I did manage to gain almost perfect signal for roughly 10 mins, before it slowly degrading to nothing after about 30 mins. My specs are:
32b Vodafone Magic
CyanogenMod-6.1.0-DS
Baseband Version 62.505.20.17U-2.22.19.261
Kernel Version 2.6.35.9-cyanogenmod shade toxygene #2
Thanks heaps to anyone who helps with this really frustrating problem

I had a similar problem with the 32A. I had changed the radio and ROM when my issues started. I eventually reverted back to a know working ROM & Radio. Eventually, I waited from a newer Cyanogen ROM to be released. I would suggest to try and experiment with different radio and ROM if you have the time.
When I do flash, I always do a full wipe. Another xda member posted a flashable wipe that works extremely well. I would recommend that method to wipe.
Thanks heaps for the reply, yea i'd considered changing the radio, but couldn't find a download for a 32b device, and i'm not super experienced so i was worried about bricking the device as i understand I would potentially need to flash a new spl as well?.
The problem, however, appears to have remedied itself. I'd temporarily fixed the problem by selecting use 2g only network, (settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile networks ), this would allow strong Edge reception, but as soon it was switched off, i would lose it again. After leaving this setting enabled for the duration of the day, i decided to have another go at switching 3g back on and for some reason i've regained strong 3g reception for the last 3 hours, Ill report back if i lose it any time soon, however if anyone is experiencing the same problem, have a go at this before flashing a new radio.
