I installed a few softwares on my PDA (imate a.k.a. XDA II) yesterday. Some of them had today plugins so they created entries in the today plugin list.
One strange thing that happened is that my Inbox today plugin has disappeared from the today plugin list.
Any idea where it went and how to get it back? And what controls what shows up on the today plugin list?
Limited number of today plugins
First off, I am assuming that you have gone to your settings - Today and made sure that it's not just a problem with checking/unchecking the plug-ins listed. Secondly you will need a registry editing program like PHM RegEdit or Resco Explorer Registration add-in. Find your way to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE then SOFTWARE then Microsoft then Today then Items. Delete any keys you are not currently using to bring the list below 13 (If memory serves me it's 13). Whether or not you actually are displaying the plugin or even use the software, as soon as the key is loaded it takes a "slot" on the list and once you reash the limit the OS just remove one to make room for another on the Today screen. To make matters more annoying, it seems that, at least for me, the inbox is the first to go instead of 3rd party plugins. Hope this solves your problem - if not post more details and we'll see where to go next.
Yes an OS problem that a few of us have faced and discussed previously.
If you install too many today plug ins for the OS to handle the InBox is the first to disappear.
If you require additional info there are existing threads dealing with the same issue.

Hi,
I have a limitation on 13 today plugins.
Some come with the rom so I can not get rid of these.
Is there a registry hack, that lets me increase the number of plugins?

Unlucky 13 can't be changed (to my knowledge)
As far as I know, the restriction is built into the operating system so the only answer I know of is to delete the "default" ones that you might not want. I have successfully deleted a number of the entries included with the ROM to make space for 3rd party ones. I'll assume that since you ask for a registry hack you have the software to perform it. Find the path: \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Today\Items
Delete whichever complete entries you don't want to use to take the list below 13. Also, as far as I can tell, even if you don't have the plugin currently displayed, if the software has registered the plugin it takes up one of your "slots" of allocated today plugins. It took me weeks to figure out why my Inbox kept disappearing as I added my 3rd party software but my today screen remained minimal .

This is quite annoying, some today plugins are not getting refreshed properly and simply dissapear. I remeber somewhere reading about registry trick, but can't seem to find it. Any suggestions?

I found this and tried it, but I still have the problem with part of the Today Plugin dissapearing...
What I did is increase the Glyph cache (fonts) to 32768, the memory used to cache fonts glyphs, this allows you to use more memory to speed up the display.
Sometimes there is still a delay in plug-ins appearing, but now at least they always appear.
Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\GDI\GLYPHCACHE\
You can change the "limit" value from 4096 (slow) to 32768 (fast)
32768 will speed up the display noticeably, but uses more memory. I believe that 32768 is the max. value.

The code for the sample Today Screen plugin that ships with the Pocket
PC 2003 SDK does not behave as it should do. The code calls
DefWindowProc after handling WM_PAINT, which it should not do. It
should simply return zero after doing its painting.
This bug can result in incorrect painting; specifically, you will get
a WM_ERASEBACKGROUND without a subsequent WM_PAINT, which will cause
your plugin to disappear.

i think the software maker should write some more stuff in their code (see my post above) so that the today plugin will be 100% compatible with the OS, maybe you could drop the developer an email and point them to the MSDN link so they could improve their application.
Greg has fixed this problem in his free taskplus plugin in version 1.41. Great tool to show you task list in Today's page.
I tried the registry fix posted earlier in this thread and it worked for my WorldMate plugin. After a reset the Worldmate plugin used to load only about half way and I'd have to unselect all of the plugins and reselect to put it right. So finally I just stopped using it, now it loads great everytime...Thanks.
Also I tried Task plus again and it now works nicely on my Jam. The older version had refresh problems, but now it is working great. Oh happy days!

Doesn't work on mine... I set it to 32768.
But anytime after reset, the WorldMate plugin overlaps the others..
TaskPlus still not working
I'm using TaskPlus 1.41 and had already increased the glyph cache size to max, but TaskPlus still disappears from my Today screen--a lot.
Same here, Taskplus randomly disappears, soft-resetting does not always help, nor does ticking and un-ticking the box in the today settings.
Ok after upgrading to 1.11
I faced that in 1.03 as well after a few days of usage. I have just upgraded to 1.11 and noticed that it stays on after reboot. Will monitor it for a few more days to see if it is ok...

Hmm.. I reviving this threat after 'discovering' something called 'TodayPlus'. I did a google to it and it seems to be a very powerful program. From the looks of it, it seems to have the potential to cover both PocketBreeze and PocketPlus.. and yet it seems to be not often being discussed here. It seems to be able to do everything, by scripting (feels to be like the PPC version of Samurize.com)
I'm bound to give it a go this weekend.

Todayplus is/was the best plugin I found. It worked perfectly on my WM2003 Ipaq2210 and works on my WM5 Wizard. It was designed for WM2003 and does not support landscape correctly. There is no support available from the author but remains for me the most adaptable today screen plugin.

On your PPC turn off the TodayPlus plugin (uncheck in the Settings/Today screen), soft reset, and move “todayplus.dll” from \Program Files\TodayPlus to \My Documents. On your PC use a hexeditor to open the “todayplus.dll” and search for “7D 1E A0 E3 03 08 A0 E1”; replace “7D” with “8D”; save the edited “todayplus .dll” and copy it back to \Program Files\TodayPlus on your PPC. Delete” todayplus.dll” from \My Documents and reset your PPC. On your PPC turn on the TodayPlus plugin (check in the Settings/Today screen) and soft reset.

The above fix is permanent. Save the new todayplus.dll in a safe place so that if you have to reinstall (e.g., after a hard reset) all you need do is install, disable, and replace as per above. There is a great debate as to whether the fix should be shared--somewhat hypocritical in my estimation, since those who were lucky enough to get it before it disappeared are using it.

Ok, I found it! I was missing the .net!
Very nice application with beautifull skins! Only drawback is that it does not auto refresh when you add a new apointment or task!
Apart from that its a really nice application!

Reinstalled on my Wizard after upgrading to Molski's ROM. I can get it working as a plugin rather than as a stand alone program, which previously was my stumbling block. Now I can't get the config utility to remember my location or get weather and rss feeds updated. This did work on my old ROM. I think it is just some reg settings that need creating but why it worked before and not now I do not know.

Im a newbie to this plugin but so far I understand that its able to make short cuts on the "desktop" just like a normal pc....and thats what Im looking for.
Ive followed the instructions carefully and the first time it went okay....i.e I got the slider.txt in the skin box. However I didnt find the "okay" button on the top.
Well I followed the instructions but it didnt show up on my desktop....strange so I uninstalled.
Now Ive been reading a bit further and read that the reason why it might not have workd could be the date so I decided to set back the clock 2 years and reinstall it.
2nd time around I dont get the slider.txt option, it has saved my settings from my first install....and it still doesnt work.

Well after som struggle I managed to get the slider.txt into the "Select Skin (DLL)"
But its still not working on my today screen. I can choose it as the only item on the today screen however its just blank.
Is this because I use a special black screen (tsk file) for my back ground ?
Also its seems to forget my location (Lat/Long)
Any help so that I can get it working ??

I finally got Todayplus running properly again. Weather and RSS are updating correctly.
This is what I did.
1 install Todayplus cab
2 Disable Todayplus from Settings/Today/items
3 Soft reset. Or power cycle the phone.
4 Overwrite todayplus.dll with the modded one
5 create directory \program files\todayplus\Buffer
6 Connect to internet and verify connection with PIE, minimise
7 Run todayplus config
6 Tab to Weather/RSS add new weather cities and rss feeds
7 Tab to Time/Storage add new timezone and set storage path to \Storage Card (case sensitive and device specific for Wizard?
8 Close Todayplus config
The config utility would not save my location coordinates on the owner info tab so I manually entered the values into HKCU\Software\SRSSoft\TodayPlus\coords\1 (string value of the form 53.483,-2.053) You can get your city coords from http://www.heavens-above.com/
9 Disable all other today screen plugins and enable todayplus. Close the settings program.
On returning to the today screen after a short wait Todayplus should be working. This worked for me but there is loads of information at http://forums.jhollin1138.com/viewtopic.php?t=1292 if you need further help.
Hey everybody, I've got a HTC Wizard phone running Wm5 and I would like to write a different today screen application (not a new plugin, but replace entirely the today app - plugins host).
I search the net for informations about the application, but I could only find out that is called host.exe.
Does any one know what kind of restrictions are for this type of application?
Does it need to respond to some specific things?
And how can I replace it with my exe?
Or at least where can I find such information?

It seems to me that the today app doesn't need to meet any special requirements. You can replace it with any app. However you will lose the start menu and the clock bar if the new application doesn't provide such functionality.
There is one thing I could not find: how can you specify the application that will be started as today screen.. I assume this would be a reg key but i could not find it yet.
I developed application I was always missing on WindowsMobile - one that shows time remaining to next appointment or time left to current appointment. It's still in beta phase, I hope you will help me find bugs and problems.

been looking for something like this. using the today plug in, the only thing that seems to be happening is the keyboard icon comes up on main screen and I lose the soft buttons at the bottom but after opening and closing random programs it sorts itself out. cheers. I'm have kjam running wm5.

I have something like this. Softkeys are functional then. It happens mostly after first loading plugin (after activating or soft reset). Best cure is to launch anything and go back to today screen - everything should be normal again (as you said). I think the reason is that this plugin is in fact windows form (not window in native code).
I'm glad it works with WM5, not only WM6
Does this work for alarm? Spb Shell has a nice "Time remaining for next alarm" on the main screen. neXt has this feature?
Does not display properly on a Diamond VGA device. Plugin 2nd line is cut in half [cannot read] and the main program does not resize for VGA [stays in QVGA size, about 1/4 of screen].
Otherwise it does appear to be working properly.
