I don't recall having this issue on any of my other phones, but I unintentially missed quite few important calls while using GPRS.
Is it supposed to be like this?
no sms and calls are suppose to disable grps unless they are finshed
wow, that was a quick response.
So, how do I fix this?
You can not fix it.
Interrupting a GPRS session to accept a voice call is a feature that some operators have chosen not to implement.

Hi folks:
I cannot be totally sure if this is the cause of this, but after loading the v1.2 ROM, I am missing calls while I am transferring data on GPRS. The weird thing is that while GPRS is on and I am not transferring data, I get calls in, but if I am browsing on sending/receiving email, I miss the calls.
Can this be related to the ROM update, or is it that I have a setting that needs to be adjusted ?
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Fernando
What did you have before the 1.2? We did not change much in the way GPRS connections are handled relative to 1.1.
Hello:
I had the current T-Mobile ROM before upgrading it to ver 1.2. I like this ROM a lot, but I noticed this little snag that makes me miss calls every so often.
Thanks in advance,
Fernando
This is exactly how it has ALWYAYS worked. The XDA uses a subset of the GSM spec which does not allow for simultaneous voice/data, and you cannot receive a call while ACTIVELY passing data. With the connection open but not actually sending data, the phone will ring. If you answer, there is a delay while GPRS is dropped and the call is picked up.
There is a spec for simultaneous voice/data, and also a spec for getting calls and suspending GPRS temporarily (leaving your internet connection just where you left it once you hang up the voice call). The XDA supports neither, and actually most carriers are not able to support simultaneous yet either (at least the US carriers cannot). They do support suspend, which works with phones like the T68.
Hola Carlos:
This makes sense, and it is actually the way it is happening for me. It seems I only noticed it now. I actually notice the delay in answering the incoming calls while GPRS is dropped.
Thanks for your wisdom and help.
Cheers,
Fernando
I'm sure I've read about this problem in the past but I can't figure out whether there is a way around it. My model is an MDA Vario II in the UK. Is there any way to avoid missing calls when the phone is connected to the internet?
It's great having a phone with internet access, but not so great that it doesn't seem capable of functioning as a phone at the same time!
thanks
Can anyone help with this please?
thanks.
Am I really the only person with this problem, or am I just being really dumb with my forum searches?
thanks
I think there is a difference between GPRS and UMTS. When a GPRS connection is active (at least, when data is sent or received) you are not able to receive calls. When UMTS is active, calls should get through. The standard way should be that the device detects an incoming call, shuts down the GPRS connection and restarts it after the call is ended. With UMTS, the device can receive and send data and answer the call at the same time. I have actually never had any problems with unanswered calls while browsing, but I use UMTS all the time (or perhaps no-one is calling me while browsing).
I have no idea what fault in your phone could cause your problem. Try searching with better keywords perhaps in the future, I found several threads relating to this problem by using the words "data connection missed calls". Use the same words for a search and I am sure you'll find lots of threads about this.
This will always happen with any handset. if you are sat there reading a page and not loading any data then the call will interupt the GPRS connection then reconnect once the call has finished. If you are sending or receiving data then the person will get a busy tone. Sorry this is just how all the UK networks work.
I'm wondering if it's true that, we wizard user can't surf or transfer data and also have calls come in. Also cause this phone isn't 3g?
If so is there a tweak or program that will boot you off wifi or internet that you are doing, and have the call come in. I mean it's a phone no point have a phone if calls can't come in.
thanxs would like to know if anyone have an answer for this.

The fact that you cannot talk and surf at the same time has nothing to do with 3G. GSM/GPRS is capable of being able to talk on the phone and have a data connection. You have to have a GSM Class A device to do both at the same time. The Wizard is a Class B device. You can read more about this here http://www.gsmworld.com/technology/gprs/class.shtml Scroll down to the bottom.
If you are missing calls, it might have something to do with your provider. I have T-Mobile USA, and my phone is connected to GPRS/EDGE almost constantly. I don't miss calls. When you have an incoming call, your provider should suspend the data session to allow the voice call to come though.
Understood.
Thanxs d0ug for straighten all the question I had about it.
I searched around and was unable to find an answer to this.
When listening to streaming radio either through Last.fm or streamfurious I can not receive phone calls? If anyone calls me it goes directly to voice mail. As soon as I stop internet radio calls come through again.
Does anyone know of a way to fix this?
Thanks in advance.
Doug
If your not on 3G then it is because you are using all of your 2G service. If you use 3G then you can use it for data and internet and 2G for texts and calls.
Someone correct me if I am wrong.
Bleh, wrong thread. Delete plz!

Not knowing exactly how our phones carry the signal for internet and voice calls that seems like a logical answer to me. Huge drag for me though I love turning on internet radio in the car and piping it through my system. Even on 2g it sounds and streams great. But the lack of not receiving calls I suppose I will have to stop that habit lol. Who knows when 3g will roll out in my area...
oh well. Thanks for the info.
Doug
It's true that it's impossible to use data and voice at the same time on 2g, but it's the app that should pauze itself for an incoming call. Or Android should have been able to do this! Atleast that was the case with my last phone. While checking something on internet, call display appeared on incoming calls and browser disappeared. Call ends, browser reappears.

Well maybe it is something that just has to be change with the current internet music streaming software. I have tried three different ones and they all do this so it doesn't look good for a pause feature when a call comes through.
I have no idea how hard that would be to add to the current software. I suppose if you had 3g you wouldn't worry about this but as we all know, T-Mobiles 3g coverage is lacking.

My transfers suddenly went up to 1 GB/month. It was below 200 MB normally.
I compared my GPRS data transfer list with the speaking details and it turned out that some times GPRS got connected while I was talking on the phone.
Is this possible?
I really don't want to pay for a billing mismatch of my carrier... and it's a loooot of money, I tell ya!
"If I am connected to the Internet (e.g. via GPRS ), can I still receive calls?
If you are Sending or Receiving Data via GPRS at the moment the voice call arrives, you will not receive the voice call. Otherwise your phone will ring and you will have the choice to Answer or Ignore the voice call. If you answer the voice call the GPRS data session will be suspended. In the future, some GSM networks may deploy functionality which allows incoming voice notifications to be received during the sending or receiving of the GPRS data. Answering the voice call will suspend the transfer of data."

Is this true, is this half-true, it depends, or please somebody explain it to me!
Thanks in advance
You get either data connection or voice. If the Wizard had a 3G radio, then you could have both as long as 3G was available where you were.
Yeppeee! That's what I supposed to hear!
Now I can deny to pay those false bills.
Thank you very much!
I'm not sure if your provider will accept my comment as expert testimony!
That's just for me to be sure about my truth
They said I must ask HTC an authentication of that my phone is unable to do that. Then they revoke their bills.
Thanks again!
