Hello everybody.
Just question, maybe someone have answer to it. I am trying to use my XDA-II as modem for GPRS... well, why? First - i have unlimited unique package on my SIM (unlimited country calls, unlimited GPRS, unlimited everything inside country). Sure, i am not bad guy, and to not use only GPRS and overload network ( ), i did installation of satellite dish. So, now i have 100 Kb/s downloads. But there is few problems, and main of them -
XDA gives connection by GPRS to other PC's in network, only by using wmodem, what can emulate modem on IrDA, USB, Serial, Bluetooth.
1)When i have attached USB cable, and XDA II charged not 100%, slowly it will go to zero, and turn off GSM part finally. If it is charged 100%, and when i am using GPRS - light is turned off, it will stay 100% always. Very strange situtation, isn't it?
2)wmodem occupating GSM device totally. Means i cannot receive calls at same moment. Why so expensive device is have so ugly features?
Yes, well, it is unique - PDA and GSM in one case, but it is working worst on this case, than regular mobile + PDA!!!
3)And main problem for me, it is when GPRS disconnected by GSM operator (well, sometimes network overload, sometimes signal problems), wmodem is not replying, and i need to go and press Stop/Start (and sometimes mobile need reboot, cause it is not finding network or just stuck), i feel Windows style. I tried ROM's 1.66 and even I-Mate ROM 1.72 - all the same.
As solution i can buy GPRS PCMCIA or USB device, but i need remove each time when i come to home SIM-card, but that means it will be destroyed after 1-2 month, and it is not nice way.
Seems a GSM part XDA is very weak, and looks like Internet in Windows 3.11, like fifth leg for rabbit. Anybody have ideas, or maybe already fix this things?
And sorry for my so bad english
I have the same problem but not for GPRS. I want to use WModem for data enabled GSM. All you said happend for me.
Me is getting exactly the same stuff here
For problem with battery discharging, should be a solution somewhere in this forum, U should change the pins in USB Cable (some soldering involved)
For other problems I do not known solutions yet. ;(

For some reason - my QTEK 9100 fails to maintain the connection to my GPRS service. Once I connect, it holds the connection until I make/receive a phone call. Thereafter, the device shows the connection in place, but it fails to pass any more data through the connection. To keep using the data connection, I must either soft reset or switch flight mode on/off.
(Needless to say, I have been able to use my SIM in other GPRS-enabled phones).
ROM 1.1.7.5
Date 9/22/05
Radio 01.01.10
Protocol 4.0.13.16
ExtRom 1.1.7.105
Anyone have any ideas?
Is there a ROM upgrade or RegEdit that could do the trick?
Same **** with mine 9100 on MTS. We should get together to solve this issue. Let me know if you got the solution. My ICQ 2662731, phone no. 916 137 7540, Leonid.
Absolutely the same problem with my Qtek 9100 on MTS. Some people on the forums say it's operator's problem; others claim it's not. However, switching from MTS is not an option for me anyway (corporate cell phone number, etc.) so I would be very much obliged for any solutions, or at least hints towards what can be causing it.
One possible solution (haven't tested myself yet) is setting GPRS to 'always on' via the registry editor; however
a) Will it drain my battery much more than usual?
b) Won't GPRS get disconnected in standby mode?
hi
hi. try to initiate GPRS connection with the default inbox email. press send and receive to check email. let it connect GPRS. when someone call u. it still maitain but the during call, the other person must pick up the phone. if nobody pick up the phone. the GPRS will have problem and need to turon and turnoff radio again. this is the only to maintain gprs, that is, to initiate GPRS connection with the default inbox email.

One thing I know for sure:
it will not drain your battery any more that when connecting gprs on demand. I used to use the "grps always on" feature and can't tell the difference in battery life.
Regardless of the "gprs always on" setting I do sometimes have problems with the connection. The icons (gprs) say it's on but no data is transferred (no e-mail/www received) but it happens very rarely and I can't tell in what circumstances.
By the way: holding the red off-hook key for 5 secs closes the gprs connection - check if it doesn't make your problem easier to bare ;-)
Maybe you could try another operator's SIM - at leat you'd know if it's the Wizard or the operator.

Yes, I know about this one; however, since GPRS won't reconnect anyway, this doesn't solve anything for me.
Oh well, I'll keep experimenting and hopefully Qtek will release some ROM updates in the future to deal with the problem.
Update: After playing with the settings a bit, the problem indeed seems to be with phone calls; i.e. I can disconnect/reconnect GPRS manually without any problems, but once a phone call is made or received, GPRS stops reconnecting. I have a suspicion it's actually an operator issue but haven't had time to try some other SIM yet.

I called service today about this problem, they heard nothing about it, they said. Also they invited to flash rom, that was released month ago, they said. I asked them about version but call operator didn't know.
I'm afraid to do that because they could flash older verison than I have, and there are some roms that have troubles with incoming calls, I read in russian Qtek forum.
My version:
OS: 1.3.9.4 RUS
Date: 9/29/05
Radio: 01.01.10
Protocol: 4.0.13.16
ExtROM: 1.1.7.105
I read there are some utilities to save rom but I cannot find how to save rom to hard disk to restore it in future surely.
My version is:
ROM 1.1.7.9
Date 9/16/05
Radio 01.04.10
Protocol 4.0.13.17
ExtRom 1.1.7.111
(Russian OS)
Just read on some Russian forums that there were the same problems with s100 until the new radio version was released, so I guess we just have to wait.

Just tried it myself, didn't work for me either.
So far, the problem can be diagnosed as: regardless of GPRS status, a phone call (outbound or received) will screw up the existing GPRS connection and any future attempts to reconnect unless a soft reset/flight mode switch is made.
I hope to god a ROM update will be available in the near future; meanwhile, any and all suggestions are welcome.
Today I visited service, they flashed me the same rom I already had. Then they tried to solve problem at least 2 hours but with no success.
I advised them to be ready for crowd of users of 9100 who connect to MTS.
Technician said I have to wait new rom update, but he cannot say nothing about release date.
I want to beleave...
Some guy at Russian forums put forth an idea that our problem might in fact be an issue with lousy MTS implementation of EDGE.
So in theory it could be solved by turning EDGE off entirely (if it is indeed possible).
Same problem on my Qtek 9100 ... is there any updates available for the ROM?
I have this same problem on both my Kjam and Qtek 9100. I am in the United States and use Cingular. I suspect this is not a carrier problem.
I'm in the US on Cingular with a Qtek 9100. I think the issue is that the carrier drops the GPRS connection after time, or the signal is lost and WM5 doesn't react. Either way, seems like leaving GPRS in constant ON mode plays into the problem rather than help it. After installing GB-SOFT Tweak http://msmobiles.com/news.php/4714.html and setting it to release GPRS if unused for more than 10 or 15 minutes, I don't get the GPRS problem nearly as often. Furthermore, when a GPRS lockup does occur, turning flight mode on and then off again restores function without the long cycle time of a soft reset
Christian
I had the same problem on my IMate and it was fixed by turning off (2sec) and then turning on your device once the GPRS connection was established. Haven't tested on my jam yet
I have the same problem since upgrading to AKU2 ROM - before I never had that issue...
my wizard, stock tmobile rom, sometimes after sitting a long time, will play sounds about 10 percent faster and higher pitch. clearing the storage did not solve this. its happened twice to me now, any ideas or known workarounds / fixes?
Hi, yes I know this problem, if that happens it's also not possible to get a gprs connection. Happens to me with both HTC Charmer and HTC Prophet (o2 Xda Neo AKU2).
Solution is to switch of the phone part and again on. Maybe a hardware issue because of all the models have that problem, regardless of the firmware.

I wouldnt know about the GPRS since i dont subscribe to it (tmobile GPRS turned into a big RIPOFF after they stopped letting u use tzones to browse with a PDA and now want u to pay 30 instead of 20 for full internet) I still think its a driver issue because all of the models would have the same driver since it is the same hardware
I had this happen on my Cingular 8125 with the stock ROM - but after upgrading to Summiter's 2.16.7.2 ROM I haven't seen this again

go into my.tmobile.com select blackberry as your phone then select blackberry internet for 19.99... edge speed without hotspot.
I have an Xda Exec with:
JasJar
ROM 1.30.76
Radio 1.11.00
ExtRom 1.30.164
I keep getting error messages connecting to T-Mobile USA I reset and it works for a little while but then it drops again. The phone function is acting up too, sometimes it tells me either call failed or no service where I know there is service, usually a reset fixes it but it is very unrelialble.
Yep happens to me too. I started a thread on this subject matter two months ago I think Here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=46646
The Jas Jar (HTC 3G phone) has to switch from phone to data, data to phone. Sometimes it does not know if the phone is finished. If you get heaps of calls then using a PPC may not be your thing. But if you need PPC for the other PC features then it works great. I dont get a lot of calls so others may rebut this.
Having a poor signal doesnt help, getting adapters and antennas is the challenge see other threads on this forum. Currently they ( any manufacture ) are just starting to make adapters available, however no forum users have posted any success stories yet.
With skschema (http://s-k-tools.com/) , I wrote a script that checks data conection every hour, if the connection fails I force a reconnect, if reconnect fails, I turn GSM off then back on, if that fails I reset and reconnect GSM and internet . This script is like "Stay connected" software out there. I also have other maintence scripts, email checking, etc.
I was knew to PPC this year, I took me 3 months to get sorted, but I am happy now !
GoodLuck
I don't agree with your obversation about a PPC not being good for lots of phone calls I have a Wizard that is stable and does almost everything.
For the money of these phones I would expect to have both. I cannot believe that it has such a hard time with the simple things.
Fair enough, I use mine for data, emails, and internet.
I dont distribute the phone number, I use device as a mini laptop.
You are correct, it should handle all the calls you get.
However the Jas Jar is one of the first phones out there with phone to data on 2G and 3G. So maybe the next or future device/Operating system of this functionality will be better at switching between the two infomation types.
I thought 3G was not yet in USA ?
We have 3G but it works on the 1900 spectrum which make this phone useless execpt for GPRS.
I bought it for the larger screen and the keyboard I like how you don't have to press the function key to imput numbers while typing.
If I can't get this to work I will have to go back to my Wizard.
Hello,
I have just upgraded to the official GPS ROM and I am on the Swedish 3 operator. I have noticed since the upgrade that the network connection is switching from 3G to HSDPA when there is a demand of bandwidth or simply when there is data in either direction.
I can see that the purpose of this was to make it possible and more reliable to place and receive calls during data sessions. I have figured out though, that with the old ROM, there was no such switching (but there was no distinction with the icon, so you really had no idea) and the connection speed was always constantly 1Mbits/s when using Internet Sharing for example. Now with the HSDPA/3G switching/throttling, the connection often drops down to 3G speeds and Skype-calls are lacking quality from this a bit when using Skype in the car which i do quite regularly nowadays using my Jabra JX-10 headset.
I also realize that there is still a problem with outgoing and incoming calls during these automaticly switched-on HSDPA-sessions. That is probably why HTC has decided to keep the HSDPA sessions as short as possible, that's fine, but what boggles me is the algorithm used for the switching. It seems to always kick in HSDPA in the beginning of a new data session, and after a short time of inactivity (while pondering what favourite page to open this time) the connection drops down to 3G and it won't kick back to HSDPA even when you start browsing again, until a certain period of "non-HSDPA-ratio" has been reached and the phone thinks it would be OK to kick in the highspeed again for a little while.
I also noticed that using Skype would keep HSDPA alive once you place a call from a fresh started data session and keep talking ;-)
This is not a particular problem to me, I was just wondering of anyone else here has noticed and had an idea of what the programmers had in mind?
BTW: I am running TomTom 6.010 and Franson GpsGate on the machine now and it works absolutely like a dream. I used to have a Blue-I Bluetooth GPS in the car (Trimble based chipset, only 8 channels but quite OK piece of hardware) but this is far superior when it comes to HOLDING a persistent fix also when moving indoors. The TTFF is quite fast as long as you are outdoors, most of the time i have a fix before i leave the parking space. I noticed there being a dynamic number of satellites of the receiver, sometimes i see 7 out of 8 satellites, and then sometimes i see 10 out of 12! Anyone noticed?
Thanks in advance! Cheers...
It’s not your phone that decide to change from HSDPA mode to normal R99 (384kbits) mode and vice versa. Everything are always controlled by the network. The behaviors that you describe are normal. Besides the HSDPA is quit new for the operators and new parameters needs to be tuned for best performance for every users.
BTW, the degradation that you notice. You are not alone that use HSDPA.... Its finally the big success for 3G
I use Phone Alarm profiles and BandSwitch to control my connection based on business hours. I get a poor singal unless on 3G where my office is located. I force it to GPRS otherwise to save battery.
I have similar problems, cannot receive or start calls when HSDPA connected. Shouldn't that be possible anyway, calling and transferring data at the same time? Or is this a network provider problem?
I too am on the Swedish operator 3. I have an unlocked, non-operator distributed HTC TyTN that I had updated the radio to 1.40xxx and the ROM to Black Dymond 3.5 and was having the exact same problem. I could reproduce the incoming call not getting through error every single time I got the phone to go into HSDPA mode.
After some initial searching I read somewhere it was network dependent (Nokia switches vs Ericsson) and the only way to solve it was to disable the HSDPA using e.g. HTweakC, which I did and it solved the problem, but then of course I couldn't take advantage of the high-speed data access, which was the major reason I got this phone.
I recently noticed that 3 released a new extended ROM with instructions to update the ROM to the latest (as is available on the ftp here) then install their ExtROM. I went to the trouble to try and breakdown what was in this extended ROM, but being a newbie to pocketpc it was all hyroglyphics to me, so I went ahead and installed it over my old HTC ext ROM (which I saved for later use just in case).
When I get around to it I may mount this extended ROM here (I have it, but don't have too much time to put it up right now, so someone may beat me to it).
Anyway, Black Dymond 3.5 didn't install the Extended ROM after a hard reset (assuming that was the intention), so I did it myself afterwards. One initial bug that showed up quickly was the Comm Manager not wanting to start saying it would only manage a max of 7 items (whatever that means). So I installed Schaps latest Comm Manager and it worked fine.
Well, guess what, now there's a daemond that starts on boot and the phone app is different (another bug is that the text on the phone app buttons remain in the 3 theme although I changed back to black, but that's minor), but now I cannot replicate the no incoming calls during HSDPA error.
Apparently they've added something that makes the phone connect properly to their 3G/HSDPA network for call handling. Now I've got full HSDPA speed and no problem on incoming calls (plus still have Black Dymond's great VOIP/SIP WM6 solution).
Ok, as a noob I of course missed the fact that the daemon starting at boot is Voice Commander. Still the actual phone app/dll is somehow different with this ExtROM and it's solved my problems.
hey,
i'm using a htc artemis (o2 xda orbit) with windows mobile 6. there's a problem with the gprs-connection that really makes me mad. when i use the phone-attitutes gprs is disconnected automatically.
i'm booked 30 megabytes per month, per gprs-connection i loose 100 kilobytes. so i am very interested in keeping the gprs-connection stable for 24 hours.
can anyone tell me how i can force gprs NOT to disconnect? i'm thankful for any hint
There is no way to do that. You can either be on Data or on call. No way to do it together
my xdaII never had any problems running both data and call
it's typicaly an issue with old equipment of the operator rather then a phone issue
I have the same problem with hermes. I read in one of the threads that it is not possible. Here is the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=363787
please read through it, and it would give you more idea about why GPRS/EDGE would not work while you are on call. Correct me if I am wrong.
Alright, so i'm not the only one having this problem.
I wonder if the device or windows mobile causes the disconnection. In my opinion "usual" mobile phones are able to both connect to gsm an gprs. So, is it a problem of windows mobile, the network provider or the orbit?
Thanks for your replys!
I think i got the resolution: the gprs-connection remains stable in case of not using the hardware-buttons to answer incoming calls! Use the software-keys of windows mobile, displayed on your touchscreen! You'll see, after answering an incoming call, gprs is still active. I think that should work on other devices also.
will test and get back. good to know
