Upgrading my Qtek 1010 - MDA, XDA, 1010 Software Upgrading

Hello ppls!
This would be my first post here @ xda-developers
A very informative site i must say.
As the topic says, I got myself a Qtek 1010 a while ago. I know the model is old. But my unit is brand new and I got it very cheap
ROM version: 3.16.13 ENG
ROM date: 01/09/03
Radio version: 3.19.01
Protocol version: 32S54
Pocket PC 2002
There are a few things i would like to "adjust"
I want to able to read the name of the contact, when reciving an sms. not only the number (important)
I wan't to be able to send mms.
I wanna have mp3 wma or any other funny sounds as a dialingsignal.
Of what I've read on this forum, I need to update to PPC2003 to solve these issues, is that correct?
Currently I have no SDcard. But I will purchase this any day soon.
Can I update the unit, without a sdcard..?
How do I succeed with this?
Many thanks in advance.
//Kristoffer.

Anyone?

mms and 2003 are 2 different things you can install a mms sending and recieving program just fine on 2002
if you dont want to bother with installing 2003 to get the right name when getting an sms www.yorch.net have a program which change so 2002 display it correct aswell
about ring tones then changing to 2003 will let you use wma as ringtones but not mp3 ms dont really like mp3 and wma is their own format

But how? Where?
Where can I get the windows 2003? Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

xda2 already have 2003
here you can cook roms for XDA1!! only
http://lumpistefan.dyndns.org/
here is how you sd flash
Ok here you go, its a little outdated but its what I still use:
Qman's how to use XDArit to write nk.nb1 or nk.nbf to your SD card aka the Bootloader Method!
1. Place XDArit and the nk.nb1 or nk.nbf file in the same folder and start XDArit.
2. Select your SD card (disk drive) from the drop down menu.
3. Select Write to SD
Notice that the Windows CE box is already checked so just click the browse button at the end of that window.
4. Select your (nk.nb1 or nk.nbf) image and then Open
Notice by default XDArit will open looking for a *.nb1 file but if you're going to use a .nbf file you'll have to manually change the "Files of Type" to *.nbf
Notice that nk.nbo / nk.nbo was automatically added as your boot-loader and its check box is unchecked so leave it that way and click OK. XDArit should start writing to the card.
When XDArit has finished writing the image put the SD-card into the XDA and hold the power button and soft reset. You'll be taken to the below screen:
SD DOWNLOAD
Card Type:
CE OS & BOOT
Press action to Download
Or
Press REC to Exit
Press action to download and it will start the download/restore from the SD card.
Follow the on screen instructions once its "Completed" which will consist of a "Soft Boot/Reset".

Many many thanks!
Almost love ya already
Are there any real benefits of using 2003 then?
What are the things I need to do to make my unit mms capable then?
Thanks in advance

as long as it's in a brotherly fasion
2003 have an butt ugly background in contacts
2003 have that show the sms as contact name
2003 support some more network and bluetooth stuff which xda1's dont really need
2003 well some software only works with 2003
2003 also add 2 volume sliders one for phone and one for pda
and i think it support midi and wma ring tones aswell where 2002 only support wav
mms program
1 mms composer == better imho http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=8511&highlight=mms+composer
2 ezwap == less good imho http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=685&highlight=ezwap
and of cause you need the different settings from the cellphone company
here is a pdf that you should be able to read and just put in the settings from your cellphone company
at least if it were in swedish i would be able to read it ...

Thanks again!
danish or norweigan is no problem
I will look into this right now.

Hi!
I bought a Qtek 1010 too with a very low price.
It is very old!
Radio: 3.07
OS upgraded to 3.17.03 (from 3.14.06)
I know, Radio upgrade has a very big risk.
My question is that I can install OS 4.01.16 without a 4.21 Radio upgrade?
If not, which Radio upgrade is the best? There are many files on the internet, with the name 4.21 but they aren't seems identical.
The romkitchen 3.17.03 OS rom is ideal for a radio upgrade?

my guide to upgrade dont mess with the radiostack whatsoever!

Thank you, I tryed.
The oldest radio: 3.07 works with WM2003 (4.01.12 ENG)
I can initiate and receive calls. I not tested the GPRS connetction yet.

Now, I use 3.07 radio with 4.01.12 OS.
I tryed the GPRS it works.
Earlyer, I used another Wallaby that I sold. This was a 4.21 Radio rom with 4.01.16 OS.
Differences beetwen the two device: (things with 3.07 radio)
- GPRS suspend sometimes don't work
- If the unit lost radio signal, I must to reset it otherwise it never connect back to the GSM network.

Will there be a WM2003 upgrade for Qtek 1010?

Hi- i have tried to contact my local dealer in Denmark, but nobody seems to know whether there will be an upgrade or not. Any clues ?????
You don't have to wait since you can use O2's WM2003 rom.
Sounds good, but what happens with my qtek ??What about the radio upgrade, and can i go back to the previus version ???
Your qtek's rom will simply overwrited by O2's rom. It just like install a difference version of Windows to your computer (May be it's not a good example...). Except the boot up screen, there is no major different.
I think you should upgrade your qtek's radio to Qtek 3.23 or O2 4.21, because these two version were reported working great on the WM2003 rom.
You can go back to the previous version, but you should have a 64m+ SD Card and a XDArit compatible SD Reader (most stand-alone SD reader should work), because the windows flashing utility (program a) is not working under WM2003, you must use a SD card to downgrade the rom.
Hi,
Any links to get the Qtek Radio [email protected]?

German ROM for XDA or MDA

I own a T-Mobile MDA and installed the Special ROM V1.2. Stupid enough, I didn´t backup the original ROM.
Since I am not very satisfied with all the new features, I wanna downgrade to the old ROM. Does anybody have a german version of either the ROM Image for the XDA or the MDA (well, i guess MDA is the better one for me, since I own an a O2-SimCard but a T-Mobile MDA)
Can anybody helpme out with this image?
Cheers
Tom
The two devices (xda and mda) are the same. So the better one for you will be the one from O2. The configuration for GPRS and all will be done automaticly.
You can get it from the O2 Web-site..
http://www.o2online.de/o2/business/datenloesungen/xda/downloads/index.html
Regards
Stefan
Hy Stefan,
they only offer an UPDATE there and not the original ROM-Image......but thanks for the information anyway, even O2 Hotline couldn´t give me at least this link
Rgds
Tom
The Update is the complete ROM.
It´s not like the normal windows update.
This is the ROM-Version that O2 ships with the new buyed xda´s.
Since all the os-data are on the rom, there is no possibility to change files of the os to make a update.

Well, actually there is, but the makers of the XDA never used it.
Pocket PC/Windows Mobile ROMs are divided in different regions, called XIP blocks. And there's a mechanism called updateXIP, which lets you update only one such region. iPAQs use the mechanism. But then they don't have this jungle of cellular providers each wanting their own version.
But since it's never used on the XDA, and only entire ROM images are ever distributed for it, you are completely right for the purpose of this discussion, ofcourse.
Well, every time i try to execute that "programm_a.exe" downloaded @O2, i receive this error message: "FEHLER 007: KEINE ROM BILDDATEI! ROM-Bild zum Upgrade des Pocket-PC nicht auffindbar. Downloaden Sie und machen Sie einen neuen Versuch"
Any Idea, what to do....please
Tom
Step 1:
Download „programm_a.exe“ from http://www.o2online.de/o2/business/datenloesungen/xda/downloads/index.html (the link is at the bottom of the page „Download Software Update“)
Step 2:
Run „programm_a.exe“ till the point where the Rom-Upgrade Program starts, then click „Abbrechen“
Step 3:
Install „XDAtools-Jeff.exe“ from http://cuba.calyx.nl/~jsummers/XDA/XDAtools-Jeff.exe
Note: Programm must be installed into „C:\Program Files“ and NOT into „C:\Programme“, otherwise doesn´t work
Step 4:
Open a Command Window, Start the Comand line Interpreter with „CMD“
Step 5
Run „C:\Program Files\XDAtools\binaries\OSImageTool.exe --Register“
Step 6:
Copy the file „NK.nbf“ from „C:\Programme\PROGRAMM A\German“ to „C:\Program Files\XDATools\\binaries\English“
Step 7:
Run „Start.bat“ from „C:\Program Files\binaries“ and follow the instructions. After doing so, you should have the german O2-Image on your XDA (O2) or MDA (T-Mobile, and it works perfect with the mda too)
Step 8 (optional, this is the O2-Update for the Radio Stack):
Download „programm_b.exe“ from http://www.o2online.de/o2/business/datenloesungen/xda/downloads/index.html (the link is at the bottom of the page „Download Software Update“)
Step 9:
Start „programm_b.exe“ and follow the instructions
If you did everything the way described here, you will have an O2-XDA with the latest O2-Software, even if you own a T-Mobile MDA ;-)
I did so, ´cause my Company gave me a T-Mobile MDA (it simply was cheaper than the XDA) and en E-Plus SIMCard, but my own Card is a O2-de Card and i was ****ed up with not having any indicator for my home zone.
Take the original T-Mobile
You find it here:

QTEK and 2003

I cannot find a good 2003 for my QTEK. I tried the 4.00.5, 4.00.10, 4.00.11 and 4.00.16 on my QTEK, and had the SD Card erasure problem with one of them, and with others after a few hours, radio buttons and checkboxes on dialog disappear.
Anyone can help ?
Just out of curiosity what radio stack are you running?
I use radio 3.19.01.
I used to have to radio dead signal, and I broke my screen. when the device returned from repair (EUR 140, incl taxes), I had this version on it, and I have no more problem since then
Take care (of your device!).
Hi ..
How did u manage the upgrade ... EXE file or SD and boot loader ??
I couldn't do it with the EXE method till now, and have no budget for SD and reader
I also have the QTek 1010, rom 3.18.04, radio 3.23.01. Im also keen on upgrading to 2003. Would like to know which version to use and should I upgrade my radiostack to any specific version, eg. o2's 4.21?.

I use the SD card method. Fortunately, I made a Backup of my rom on a sd before, and a backup of all the content, so I've been able to rollback to 3.16.13 with no problem.

I read alot about avoiding playing with the Radio stack and specialu with the 4.21 one since you can't roll it back. may be you should check with your local providor.

Upgrade XDA II / i-Mate Pocket PC / 2020 from 2003 to 2005

Hi there guys
Is there any way that you can upgrade from Windows Mobile 2003 to Windows Mobile 2005?
I have a i-Mate Pocket PC / XDA II. Here in South Africa no-one can help you with that. They can't even tell you if it is possible. Even the guys specialising in the i-Mate phones/PDA's don't have a clue.
They don't even know how to upgrade from 2003 to 2003SE. They can't even help me with that.
Please help.
Thanks guys
a quick look around the forum goes a long way
2005 http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=18584
2003SE http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=16916
Thats the problem. The links are there and you can go and read alot about it, but if you click on a link to download a file and it doesn't work it's not that nice.
I am not that clued up when it comes to PDA's. I would like to go somewhere where I can get the file, run the setup and everything works fine.
Hi, Piesang.
Used the Diamond 1.2 pack WM2003SE upgrade (need to search for the link in this forum) and used the original ext ROM from iMate. Worked first time. Been running it for over a month now, and very happy with it. Only issue picked up so far is that you can't sync via bluetooth, but still works via the cradle.
ROM version : 2.06.00WWE
ROM date: 06/14/04
Radio version: 1.180.00
Protocol version: 1337.38
ExtROM version: 1.72.800

5 questions about the Universal

I know that this question has been asked before but I cannot find a answer.
Tomorrow I get my MDA Pro and want to upgrade this smartphone:
1. Which ROM do I have to use? What do you prefer?
2. There are 3 types of ROMs : ExtendedROM, CE ROM and Radio ROM can someone tell me what these are?
3. I’m living in The Netherlands, do i have change some settings? If so what are these settings?
4. If the ROM of T-Mobile UK is good, how can I remove the T-mobile stuff?
5. On the MDA Pro in The Netherlands there is no MSN Messenger. Is this also on the other ROMs? If not why would T-Mobile NL do this?
Yours sincerely,
Mento

Do You think it is possible for anybody who reads this to just answer.
It depends on your needs, what language do You want, what provider do You use, is your device unlocked and a lot of other questions.

CE Rom is the OS provided in the device. If You do a hard-reset, this CE Rom will re-install.
Radio Rom is the firmware for the GSM / GPRS part of the phone.
ExtRom is provided by the provider You bought your phone from and this Rom (if You allow it) will additionally install some programs after Hard-Reset. One of the things installed additionally might be settings for your provider, like how to get into the internet via GPRS via his/her system.
3. I’m living in The Netherlands, do i have change some settings? If so what are these settings?

What do You refer to. If You buy it there, it will talk Dutch to You, the OS is Dutch and the settings are for your provider.
Until You eventually re-flash your device, all will be like this, even if You decide to do a hard-reset.
4. If the ROM of T-Mobile UK is good, how can I remove the T-mobile stuff?

You can remove a lot, but probably not all without great efforts.
If You refer to the boot-splash screen, search for this in this forum.
If You refer to phone-background, ring-tones, settings etc. All is possible, just take some time and read through the threads in this forum, You will get a lot of helpful information.
5. On the MDA Pro in The Netherlands there is no MSN Messenger. Is this also on the other ROMs? If not why would T-Mobile NL do this? [

I would guess for financial reasons. T-Mobile will have to pay for providing additional software than the simple standard which comes with the WM5 OS. If they decide to include or exclude some software, it will change their price for licensing the software they provide.
I hope this helped You a little. If not, please be more precise in your question.

Ruud
I bought my MDA Pro in the netherlands and I will use it in NL. If it is possible I want the MDA Pro in English.
Answer 3, I`m sorry but I do not full uderstand you
I want English but call in The nederlands so do I need to change any settings? (For example SMS MMS) If so where can I find this?
In wicht ROM are these settings?
Sorry for:
My bad english

Aha, that's something new. You have a device already. Now if You want to use it in english, I understand You want the Operation System language to be english. (Aren't we Dutch all the same / Zijn wij Nederlanders niet overal hetzelfde)
I wanted this too. For this I am afraid You have to flash the device with another ROM, something possible, explained a lot here, but also something which might effect your warrenty.
Do a few things before You do. It might be too easy to just say "dump the registry" or "backup the OS" because I do not know how-to do this myself.
What I know You will want to have for later is :
-the sys.txt file in the \windows directory as it is used for the keyboard symbols You get now, if touching the SYM-Button on your keyboard
-the number in the Registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\OEM\Querty\Layout
Write it down, as it will change whilst flashing and You might want to return to your "keyboard-layout".
(Ik heb een Duits toetsenbord en gebruik een engelse rom, dit getal zet het toetsenbord terug op Duits, nadat je de rom op Engels hebt gezet, in jou geval dus terug op nederlands)
-check all settings which seem important for connecting to Dutch internet GPRS, mail etc. as You might loose them too
-make a backup copy of your system as far as You can, even if You will never use them again, just in case.
Now for better understanding, what is your actual Rom version ?
What is your actual Radio-Rom version ?
Answer 3, I`m sorry but I do not full uderstand you

I will try my best to answer more better. The English CE-Rom provided around here is conneted to a provider in the UK. They expect You to use the device with their SIM-card and within their country.
First things first, is your device SIM-locked. If yes, it means it can only be used with a SIM-card from T-Mobile NL. If You flash to a T-Mobile UK they will eventually not allow You to use T-Mobil NL SIM-cards inside. I do not know this. (I had to buy an unlock code to use the device in Russia)
Check this before You flash.
If You change to a CE-Rom from TM-UK You loose your settings for MMS, Mail (if You entered something) GPRS connection point eventual UMTS settings etc.
SMS should be no difference I guess.
But all the other, go throuhgh the menues and write down whatever seems important, so You can always install such settings in the new rom the next time.
In wicht ROM are these settings?
Click to collapse
Most (if not all) is in the ExtRom. But I would not be able to simply say "do not re-flash the ExtRom and install such old ExtRom on the new CE-Rom" because I am afraid it might simply not work.
If You have the time and are not afraid to flash try the following order :
-unlock your ext-rom (check Buzz's method for this) and make a simply copy of all the files in your actual ext-rom.
-make a backup of ALL You have (check Buzz's method for this, search around for it) Cannot really comment on this, as I was too "stupid" to understand how to do it, or to eager to start flashing the new, so I have only a file-dump.
-flash the CE-ROM only to a new one (no radio or ext-rom yet)
-let your old ExtRom install on top of the new CE-Rom. If this works : fine for You. If not : choose from the following :
a) hard-reset (keeping your new CE Rom) and do a soft-reset (stylus) before the ExtRom installs
b) flash the new ExtRom which came with the new CE Rom as well
Without any ExtRom (a) or with the new ExtRom (b) You will not have any of the settings we were talking about, so You will have to install them by hand.
Hope this was more helpful,
regards,
Ruud
