What is the best XDA2 cradle for the car? - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

Im looking at getting a cradle for my XDA2 so that i can view it in the car. i would prefer one that i could attach an optional charge cable too but dont want to have it trailing around my car permanently. i was wondering what all you enlightened peeps would recommend for use. are there any to avoid?
Cheers

I have just got this week a perfect mount for the XDA II, but it is a mount only - you need to sort out your own cables..
It's a slightly modified magnetic mount: It has a goosneck , a sucker at one end and a magnet with soft bed a the other. You attach the sucker to your windscreen.
The idea is you attach a steel pad to the back of your unit, and then it will stick to the magnetic soft bed; but I didn't do this... I got a 50mm sqaure piece of thin magetic metal (0.5 mm). this fits snugly on the inside of the unit between the back case and the battery! It still sticks to the magnetic bed, but my unit looks the same as it always did! Looks really tidy in the car (no chunky levers and arms) My XDA- looks the same, it holds it very well. and it only cost me £15
The magnet nor the metal plate have any noticable effect on the XDA.
I bought the magnetic mount from eBay
the metal came from a friend, but there various sources...

I use a Brodit carholder for my XDA 2 (Qtek 2020). It works great!!!
http://www.brodit.com/
http://w3.easytrade.net/brodit_shop/product.dip?item=1216061&fid=1216452
They also have ProClip which is designed for each car model, where you mount the carholder.

I use a Carcomm XDAII holder, it also has RS232 Serial & PS/2 ports on the cradle, great for a GPS mouse, www.carcomm.nl .

I think the perfect for XDA is this
there are millons of good car mount solutions for PDAs, but for XDA in perticualr, i think this is the best, becuase it gives your the maximum view on xda's LCD, especailly when you use your XDA as in Car GPS navigator.
it's on SALE here at Ebay together with GPS Kit for all you need for a trable free in-Car Navigation system.

thanks

If you use the forum search feature with "car kits" you will find other options including photos of the unit I have as well as others.

I'd love to buy the Carcomm unit, but who sells it? Their site doesn't let you buy. Any ideas on a vendor in the US, or one that will ship here?
Also, does that unit have a speaker, or just power and GPS? What's the GPS interface (PS/2, DB9, etc)?

TotalPDA www.totalpda.co.uk sell them here in the UK, see here, and they do offer an international order facility. The unit doesn't have a built-in speaker but the interfaces are:
12vpower
1 x RS232 DB9
1 x PS/2
They also sell PS/2 adapter leads for the most popular GPS Mice such as Leadtek, Holux etc. I have a review of the iPAQ version on-line here. They're very high quality cradles, coupled with a Safety Clip you can mount the cradle in-car without needing to drill any holes.
I'm also a big fan of Brodit Cradles, they have an XDAII model and have ProClip mount solutions for most vehicles, the US Website is www.proclipusa.com and the EU one is www.brodit.com .

Very helpful, thanks! The Carcomm looks great, just wish it had audio. It's down to that or the "official" car kit, but... Anyone know if the i-mate Car Kit has provision for GPS? I called Expansys, and they said they *think* it does not, but weren't sure. Also, any provision for radio mute on any of these?
Also, are all the PS/2 style GPS connectors the same? I have a Deluo unit, which doesn't seem to be listed on any of the compatibility lists.

I can't answer the question re I-Mate Car-kits GPS connector but I believe they do offer a radio mute. However the audio output only works for the Phone Side so GPS Nav Instructions and other PDA audio is not sent through the audio output
AFAIK, PS/2 is a standard but you'd ned to confirm the Deluo's suitability with Carcomm.

bij brodit zijn er verschillende mogelijkheden
Belgen kunnen hiervoor altijd terecht op xanthes.com

The Brodit site doesn't seem to contain any info re prices, that I can see...
I want one for my Mini Cooper, and I presume that if you select the model number for the mini mount and then the xda2 cradle, you're away.
Does anyone have any price info?
Cheers
Anthony

I should charge Brodit commission , in the UK the appointed reseller is Handnav www.handnav.co.uk, theor website has pricing for the different types.

Thank you.
Very informative peeps. just need to make the decision on which one to get now .

My kingdom for a proper cradle...
I want GPS input, a speaker/mic, and drop-in simplicity. Too much to ask for, apparently. I can either wait for one of the upcoming models, or buy one now which is missing one of those features.

The best carkit for the QT2020 or MDAII is now being sold at Yeti; Site is in Dutch, but with pics.
Url:
http://www.yeti.nl/nieuws_040622_01carkit2020.htm
ALthough it is in The Netherlands it's worth a try to contact them if they ship to the UK.
€185 ex VAT.
Some features:
A total solution for the QTek 2020;
handsfree
Plays navigation intructions
Plays from the Windows Media Player
stereo line out
mute-signal for radio/cd-player
12 volts switches off after 1 hour; handy for GPS
one click to attach and de-attach
GPS connector
External antenna connector
Comes with a high quality speaker and mic
audio connector; plays telephonecalls, instructions and MP3 over your carspeakers (if radio has an audio in)

Sounds like exactly what I want! Now, does it really exist, and how the hell do you buy it? I didn't see a purchase button.

Look for the sentence: Klik hier om de carkit te bestellen. Just above the picture.
Translated: press here to order the carkit. And click on the word: "hier" in the sentence.

Hmm, it's a "contact" link, not actually a purchase button. Bet this thing doesn't actually exist... But I'm giving it a try, hopefully someone there speaks English.

Not that I don't trust you matey, but has anyone else got something similar and does it work well? Seems a bit cheap considering.
Also, would such a setup constitute a cradle and therefore deemed safe and legal under UK law. I heard somewhere that if the phone is not in what is designated a cradle then it's not classed as a hands free unit??
Thoughts? Ideas?

Quality stereo headphones & headset, without switching?

I've seen a number of threads that seem to deal with the subject of "headphones" and "headsets" and finding an all-in-one solution, but I couldn't seem to find one where the solution allowed a user to use any 3rd party stereo headphones and answer the phone without switching to a mic enabled headset (like using this adapter with two sets plugged in, one headset and one stereo headphone: http://www.expansys-usa.com/zoompic.asp?type=item&code=104840

Or does anyone know of a stereo headset that is of decent quality for listening to hi-fidelity music (I don't own a pair of the default but I can only presume the quality is adequate but not great, and the buds don't look that comfortable for long term music listening):
http://www.expansys-usa.com/product.asp?code=108738
the best option is to take the standard xdaII headset and about 4cm after the mic/control bit between it and the headphones , cut and fit a a normal headphone socket, this allows you to use any headphones and still have full headset functions ,
thanks
ian
Well that's definitely an option... (sure wouldn't want to do that to an expense pair of headphones, but it is an option).
It's hard to believe that in this age of convergence there isn't a decent headset that's designed for audio playback too.
Thanks for the idea, indeed I think I saw a number of "slice and splice" comments in some of the other threads, I just wouldn't want to find myself ruining a good pair of headphones trying to expose the thin wires and join them back up. I guess I'll need to stop thinking of it as an MP3 player and wait until I get the Archos AV420! ;-)
You're quite right with regard to the headphones not being very comfortable and I too was searching for a solution to this very problem until I turned the problem on it's head and came up with another solution...
I popped into my local Maplin's shop and bought a pair of foam earphone pads, put them over the supplied earphones and they are infinitely more comfortable and also stay in place. The audio reproduction on them is actually quite good.
Give that a try.
I decided to replace the ear phones and connect my Sonys to the stock switch/mic dongle.
Having removed the old ones successfuly and cut up my fantastic Sony ear buds I can't get it to solder as the wires are varnished. I have tried all sorts of ways to remove the varnish without success - including nail varnish remover.
Any ideas anyone?
Fire!!!
I was able to remove the varnish by briefly putting a flame to it. Then gently scraping the filamints with my finger nails.
Good luck.
Josh
Thanks, I tried that with limited success.
I'll give it another go.
hmm, maybe I've been overlooking an obvious solution (or am I missing something?), but wouldn't a headphone/mic combo like this: http://www.cooltechzone.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=574&Itemid=0
..in conjunction with the adapter I listed earlier ( http://www.expansys-usa.com/zoompic.asp?type=item&code=104840),
..do what I'm looking for? It sure seems like it is the answer, and I now realize there are a LOT of these headphone/mic combos out there at all different price levels! I'm going to order the adapter and maybe one of the Altec Lansing sets, I'll let you all know how it goes.
hi all, I use these
Bluetooth headset their true stereo and can play many types of music formats + voice commands for dialling + i can stream music to them + use them to chat while using Microsoft portrait, But they are not cheap, i first bought them to use with my spv c200 did a good job on them having same good luck on my M1000. here,s a link to the site where i got them
http://www.sonorix.com/~tven/eng/product/product_bap.php
Do these work with xda 2 for mp3 and voice dialling?
yes they do m8 i use them myself, on my M1000 ( which is the same as the xda2) mp3 sound brill on them I have a Bang&Olufsen 5.1 surround system ( which cost me £2.799 ) in my home here, and these headset come very close to completing with them. these headset are the creame da la creame of all headsets. Highly recomended worth every penny i paid for them which was about $263.00 dollors + import taxes which was £57 bucks
Here's a thread that has some additional info and reviews regarding adapters and the like, perhaps this info could be placed elsewhere in the forum, but this seemed relevant to this thread:

PLz recomend Bluetooth GPS and Cradles for jasjar ?

I notice a lot of you seem to have GPS up and running on jasjar.
I had tottom running on my xda2 with backpack and CF GPS receiver, but as I could not use the CF GPS with JJ, I sold it with my xda along with my car cradle which was a window mount and I am hoping to find/install something a little sturdier (worried about the weight).
So please give me some ideas on a GPS receiver working with JJ and any thoughts on car cradles.
Cheers, Numb
Your best bet would be to purchase a Bluetooth GPS receiver. There are plenty of them going around but the best one imo is the HOLUX GPSlim-236. It is based on the SIRFstar III chip which means it picks up more satellites and has a better connectivity. There are other SIRFstar III compliant BT GPS like Globalsat and the likes but the GPSlim-236 is the smallest and the lightest.
Regarding cradles for the JJ, there are many options again, but since it is rather "weighty", i suggest you buy a cradle that can be stuck or screwed onto your dashboard. I have seen the Dicota cradle which has this option and is pretty cheap too, about 15 quid if i am not mistaken.
Have fun searching!

Actually, there are probably less than one might think. The HTC Universal has it's USB/Power connector on it's SIDE, which is where the left "arm" of most cradles grip onto it. This means you're going to have issues powering the device from the car cigarette ligher socket. I'm looking for a cradle at the moment with "arms" that are quite high up...
Oh right! I completely forgot about that. My bad! I guess we will just haveta wait and see. Maybe you can email Arkon or Dicota and see if they can come up with something.

TT BT GPS works fine
You can use it with Arkon support, I did, you just have to put the power cord side up.

But if you rotated the JJ 90degrees so the usb connector is at the bottom that orientation would be nice to drop/slot into a dash mounted, basestation, that above the steeringwheel would be below my windscreen and be quite tasty for TT5, only issue then would be landscape map, which imo is slightly less revealing for the road ahead.
It could simply be velcro attached onto the dash reducing mounting issues, and you can easily make it cableless by making a hole in the dash underneath for the cable to pass through before arriving at the ciggly socket.
The destinator 3 with Globalsat BT 338 bluetooth gps receiver works well with the jasjar.....as for the cradle i bought mine from ebay and modified the two arms that olds the jasjar in place so it sits in place safely without falling off just incase i hit a big bump on the road and suddenly jumps out....i'll post a pic soon...its also a suction type holder and does not vibrate like the other pda holders.....it works well on portrait and also when the pda is on the landscape mode as the holder is adjustable.....as for the usb port, this is exactly placed under the arms of the holder so its not obstructing at all...
ok here are the pics for my jasjar cradle....

I too have a Holux Slim 236 and it is very good. I would definitely recommend it.
I have not yet bought a car mount cradle for my JasJar. Until now I've been using a powered mount with built in amplified speaker for my BlueAngel from Silver Shield. I am that they will produce a similar one for the JasJar.
I think it would be brilliant if they came up with a cradle that can hold the JasJar with the flip open so you can actually use the keyboard on it with TomTom if you want to.
Hi irv777
Could you specify what is the make of the holder you used and maybe also where on ebay you bought it ??
Cheers
i had to modify part of the arms to hold the jasjar in place as per shown in the above pics..... but u can get them on ebay or on the website www.online-electronics.com.au also try looking at this other holder i came accross as it might be a little bit better..... http://www.thepocketsolution.com/Me...egory_Code=jasjar_accessories&Product_Count=7
The holder from pocketpcsolutions.com looks like side arms will cover usb socket & therefor you wont be able to charge it.
Regards
Colin Bate
I use an Arkon powered mount, its really good because it uses stanadard USB ports to power everything, so all you need is the standard USB cable, it also has an additional output for charging almost any BT GPS adaptor.
PS it also has a built in amp and speaker
and it fits perfectly
http://www.arkon.com/imgs_site/thumb_cm720.jpg
ice_coffee,
Are you using HTC Universal with that Arcon holder? Because if I ook at the pic it looks like the side grips will cover the USB port since it is on the side of the HTC Universal
irv777,
Thanx for the links looks good, I think it is going to be one of those two.
Although on the site of Arkon http://www.arkon.com/
Look at the Car holder for PSP it is horisontal and looks pretty steady, Question is if the Universal will fit in it ?
Yes I have a universal, these pics I have uploaded should answer all your questions, I originally bought mine for my HP2110 but it fits perfectly. However if you do get one you will have to get your own standard USB sync and charge cable or wait for arcon to officially release it.
PS I forgot to mention I have a window sucker but its fine (ie it does not fall off ~ especially if the sucker is a bit wet)
Thanx mate...
I have just realised that I can also use the Landskape Left Hnaded and then all is good with my existing holder.
You just saved me aroung 25-30 Euros
Cheers

Prophet and headphones?

Hello.. Anyone in here who has managed to find a solution to this problem?
The stock headset is very anoying IMO (The ones that came with the Qtek S200 package).
Therefore I bought a small microjack(male)-to-minijack(famle) adapter.
But when I tried to use this together with my old headphones (which use minijack) I only got sound in my left side.
Im guesing that it has to do with the fact that there is both R,L and Mic channels in the microjack port, and that they are placed in an order, in which the normal R,L microjack, will not connect to the R and L in the port!
Is this correct? And what to do about it?
Thanks
Reef, there are lots of problems with using these adapters, the connection is not steady.
It is suggested to use an adapter that has a wire between the input and output.
I use one without any problems and I get sound in bothe L and R. I am using Radio Shack adapter.

I got two

2) I mod the XDAiis ones, strangely, it works with my Cassette adapter full stereo. When I use my earphones, it only has right side.

I have several different adapters. Some of them don't make a good connection and I only get one channel (off and on). I ordered this one to use with my navigation system in the car...it has a rock solid connection and a mic! I might add that they sell Martin Fields screen protectors too. http://doml.com/productdec.asp?pid=2149&model=818p&modeln=i-Mate JAMin

I'm guessing Reef has the compact ones, without a wire between the male and female.

Exactly.. But the thing is that it works perfectly when i pull i 1mm out and bend it a bit to the left.. Then there is sound in both channals..
I also bought a microjack male with no wires on it, so I gues i can try to make my own.. Just need some wire, some tools and a female minijack..
But did anyone of you know which band is the mic band? The top, middle or bottom? Cause I don't wanna waste any more money..
This is the one I have:

Headset
I smashed the headset that came with my 818 Pro in a car door and ruined it. I have been trying to find a replacement that is a better design (that stays on when I run), but have had no luck. I thought I had it in the Jabra C220s. This is a horribly designed product. They actually went out of their way to make it so that it will only play in the left ear when plugged into the PPC / phone. If you use the included adapter it works in stereo, but then the plug is 3.5 mm.
Has anybody found a decent pair of headphones with the microphone to work with the prophet? I imagine any 2.5 mm jacked PPC / Smartphone would be the same.
Thank you.

Dopod makes a nice pair of earbuds made to work with all HTC devices and includes a mic. Sold separately, of course.
Perhaps you can find them where you got your 818pro?
The ideal solution is to dismantle the mic piece (where there's the mic and the headphone wires coming out), unsolder the stock headphones and solder a pair of headphones of your choice. There's a lot of info about this in the Magician forum.
The second option, as Acer mentioned, would be to use the ones with the wire between the 2.5mm male and the 3.5mm female.
i use one without wire and there are no problem at all
I use an adaptor similar to stories, and it works great.
have to say tho, the socket in the Prophet is a bit loose. No big deal tho.
yup...the headset port @ HTC Prophet is a _bit_ loose, so you've got a chance to unplug by accident...
anyway, i also use a 2.5 to 3.5mm adapter, and connected into Senheiser PX100. it's sound good!!!

Inexpensive TMC Reciever or alternative

Hey does anyone know where i can find a tmc reciever for our phones that work with igo 8 I've been searching google for the last 3 hours and i'm tired of looking so if someone could give me a hand i would appreciate it. most of the tmc receivers i've seen are combined with gps which i dont need especially for the 150 bucks they want for them.
GNS are advertising a launch of TMC only receivers.
http://www.gns-gmbh.com/index.php?id=72&L=1
Hi,
I have baught one TMC Bluetooth from GNS and it works fine with Igo8!! The only problem, is that for the moment, Igo8 doesn't decode TMC Premium but only free TMC.
The bluetooth one is very good because, it's hidden in the car and you don't need to unplug it when you leave the car! Exept if you want to keep it with you...

Very interesting, do you mean you got this version, looped in the car radio antenna coax cable? I think it's useful to mount it hidden in the dashboard, in the end, I'd only need TMC while driving, not when using GPS apps on the Kaiser elsewhere...
How does this receiver get powered, is it supposed to be always on, and as soon as you approach with the Kaiser you can pair it?
Hi,
It isn't exactly this one, mine is the same but with different antenna connector. The connector are fakra, your link is for iso connector. But the device is the same, so you have to check your antenna connector before buying. I baught directly from germany but I don't know if they send out of europe...
For the power connector, you just have to plug the red cable to the 12v of your car. To prevent decharging the battery, I have plug it to a non permanent 12v (swithed with the key), and so you can also reset the tmc receiver.
After it's bluetooth, so you can connect near and in the car...
When you have made a bluetooth association,, you just have to create a serial port to be recognised is your gps software...
Hope it's help you.

Thanks for the tip with the switched 12v line, didn't know from their on line pictures what's the red wire for. I'm living in Germany anyway, so shipment will be ok. Damned, I mounted the car stereo myself last year, and now I don't exactly remember if it has the ISO antenna plug, albeit the stereo has a DIN connector, which is coaxial, too but larger, and I think there might be a ISO-to-DIN adapter in my Mazda Tribute, (sibling of the US Ford Escape), then I'm in luck, otherwise I'd have to order such an adapter, too. The Haynes manual or some internet research might reveal the connector type before extracting the unit again...
Heres a question, as the Kaiser doesnt have an inbuilt FM radio, but the Rapheal will do, do you think it will be possible to use the inbuild Fm radio to pickup TMC instead of using a BT dongle?
For Zoolooc:
The Red wire, is for the 12v power, the ground is made by the antenna connector.
And yes, there are adaptators for antenna connector!!
For leaskovski:
only if it can read RDS on fm radio!
I bought a TMC receiver of that company. it is built in a car power cable...
long story short: it doesn't work on the kaiser with IGO8
With my kaiser, it works... but only with free tmc...
I will try the 8.0.0.29000 witch works with Premium tmc... I'll tell you when i'll have repaired my kaiser!

Hi,
I have baught one TMC Bluetooth from GNS and it works fine with Igo8!! The only problem, is that for the moment, Igo8 doesn't decode TMC Premium but only free TMC.
The bluetooth one is very good because, it's hidden in the car and you don't need to unplug it when you leave the car! Exept if you want to keep it with you...

TMC Premium works with igo 8.0.0.41506!!!
Do these receivers work in USA? Thanks!
I think so...
Gns Products are compatible with most TMC Services (Premium):

Could you give us a picture of your TMC device ?

HTC Universal Qtek 9000 for sale - Low Price

I am selling my beloved HTC Universal, which has been a trustworthy companion even after I got my TyTN II. It served me well two times when my TyTN II had to go back for repairs; my Universal stayed reliable.
• It is a Qtek 9000, unlocked.
• It is currently flashed with Jwrightmcps Crossbow ROM Update 2.12.08 WWE from XDA-developers. This is a WM 6.0 ROM, which runs well on the Universal.
• It operates flawlessly. This device has been a reliable companion for me for the last 2 years, and I wish I didn’t have to part with it. The screen has had a screen protector on it from day 1. The speakers are in excellent condition. All of the buttons and ports are in working order. This device is functionally as good as new.
• Battery life is still very good because I took good care of the battery. I am able to use the device a lot (20-30min talk time, moderate WiFi and GPRS usage, games, Word and Excel) and still have about a 10%-20% charge at the end of the day. This is great considering the screen is VGA. Your usage and results may vary.
• Since I’ve used this phone as my daily workhorse, the exterior does show signs of wear. There are scratches on the outside of the swiveling screen where the logo is. There are also some scratches around the sides and base of the device. These are purely cosmetic defects only and have no effect on the functionality of the device.
I am selling the Qtek 9000 with everything that originally came with it. The only thing missing are the headphones, but the Qtek 9000 has a 3.5 mm headphone jack that fits most standard headphones. I am also throwing in at no extra charge some extra aftermarket styluses (styli) that have an ink pen hidden inside. This is a great feature for when you forgot to bring a pen with you. I will also include at no extra charge a 2 GB SanDisk Ultra II SD card. Lastly, I will leave the Write Shield screen protector from PPCTechs on the screen since it is still in great condition. To recap, the following are included:
• Qtek 9000
• Quick Start Guide & User Manual
• Original Qtek WM 5.0 software CD + Application CD (GPRS monitor)
• AC Adapter with USA plug adapter
• USB to mini USB cable
• Battery
• OEM Leather case
• Original factory box
• 2 aftermarket styli with ink pen
• 2 GB SanDisk Ultra II SD card
• Write Shield screen protector (already applied to screen)
I also have a Plantronics Voyager 510 Bluetooth headset that I will include at no extra charge if you like. The earbud is loose but could possibly be repaired. Other than that the headset is in perfect working condition and works well with the Qtek 9000.
The total value of the device + accessories when purchased new was about USD $1,300. I was originally selling this package for USD $250 + shipping. However, right now I will be willing to let this go for USD $199.95 + shipping. I will ship only to North America or the UK, and I can’t be responsible for any taxes or customs duties. Those will be paid by the buyer if there are any. I will accept Paypal (verified address) or postal money order only. No personal checks, please. I will also accept cash with local pickup only. I am located in Orange County, CA, USA. Lastly, because I am not a retailer, I am selling the device AS-IS with no warranties or returns. Again, there shouldn't be anything wrong with the device but I cannot offer any type of support.
Thank you for your interest in my (soon to be yours) Qtek 9000 and good luck with your new device!
