Before you attempt to run an upgrade that is executable....make sure Active Sync has stopped sync'ing. I ran the upgrade while Active Snyc was still running; this appears to have caused my XDA to lose connection during upgrade. Consequently it became inoperable and I had to jump through hopes to resolve and restore.
On a lighter note.....thank the PDA Gods for all of you and the wealth of information you freely share.
Because of you I now am operating my Siemens SX56 on ATTWS USA with a brand new PPC2003 OS......all is well and the enhancements to the phone are more then welcomed. I have not lost connection once today!!!!
Where and How
Where did you get and how is it that you were able to do the PPC2003 Mobile upgrade on the SX56 on ATTWS USA.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
OK, so now that I know about what's out there for my T-Mobile PPCPE (USA), I am now looking for some advise. I have a 'stock' T-Mobile (ROM 3.14.40 ENG), and I'd love to be able to take advantage of 'Wireless Modem' and possibly 'Always On GPRS'. T-Mobile is really slow with coming out with any updates at all, so I think I may be on my own. Could I get some honest advise?
1) Should I upgrade to a new ROM? If so, do I use the 2002 'special edition' ROM, or one of the various WM 2003 versions? I am very happy with my PPCPE as it is (except for the poor T-Mobile coverage), but I'd really like to be able to use it as a Wireless GPRS connection for my laptop.
2) Can someone point me to a 'ready-to-go' ROM, along with fail safe instructions on how to install it?
3) I have purchased a USB - to - IrDA port for my laptop in hopes of connecting using 'Wireless Modem', or 'wmodem.exe' (which ever I'm supposed to be using). Can someone explain more on how to actually initiate a connection using it? OK, so I'm jumping the gun a bit!
I'd also like to save my current ROM so that I can put it back the way it was, in case I need to deal with T-Mobile on warranty issues.
Thanks for your help.
Steve
You won't be able to use your device as a wireless modem with any of the new roms. They don't have the wmodem program that some of the European roms came with. So that is out. To back up your rom prior to updating is not only simple, it is a great idea. Just go here, read the forum, and grab the tools...easy... http://www.xda-developers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2189
I thought I was beginning to understand. Looks like I'm still more in the dark though.
First, thanks for the link to XDATools.exe program. I have downloaded it, but it appeared to use a bunch of scripts to tell it how to work, so I didn't try to run it. From the link provided, it looks like if I simply double-click on the executable on my Win XP PC, it will bring up a wizard. I'll give it a try.
As for the wireless modem, I am totally deflated! I saw a number of posts regarding the fact that it is not in any of the WM 2003 ROMS, but I thought I could install the 'special edition' ROM from this site and get the wireless modem feature to work. Is this not the case for USA users?
I can give up if I must. But, I was hoping there would be some fruit on this vine.
Thanks again,
Steve
from what i understand then there is no specielt edition of 2003 on this site
there is however a special edition of some old 2002
Call siemens customer support for the failed radio stack 1% or other failed error message users
Siemens will fix/flash the xda for free all u pay is for shipping it to them the will flash it and send it back USPS priority mail...
make the call !!! i did , shipped today (no waiting on the return)
Siemens rebuild after pc2003 upgrade 1% failure
I too had the failure. I sent my SX56 to Siemens. they promised 10 working days. it turned into 18 working days. Their reason was they are having a flood of failed sx56 pc2003 upgrades.
I do not know if they are looking into the problem. I would hope they would place better controls for the upgrade if it has known failures. Such as: You must have rom version xx.xx, radio version A.xx.xx etc.
I see others attempting to load via an sd load. I am very much a novice and I do not yet know how all that works.
Russ
currently siems seems to suck... they gave me high hopes too mine was received by them on the 16 od feb and still waiting...
i am not sure if the radio stack can be upgraded by SD card... i beleiv e the only possible soln is SERIAL flashing which needs more than he cable... so we kindof have no other options yet
I saw on the xda site that special rom can be loaded which whould allow me to unlock sim. But I also saw people saying that they could not upgrade to PC2003 which the Special Rom.
I think after you get your Seimens back you may want to hold tight. I am going to wait and see what Cingular offers when the smoke clears.
They may offer a free upgrade and help.
Russ
I think Siemens are being very favourable toward people with failed upgrades, after all it is a FREE upgrade to the latest operating system, they would have been in their rights, having warned about flashing roms being a dangerous process whereby it could render the xda useless, to tell you to pay to rectify the problem. They should be commended on their willingness to help people despite the fact that it will cost them money to do so, so give credit where credit is due please.
I agree, we should not look unfavorably to a free upgrade. It is odd that so many sx56 units are showing up as failed upgrades however.
I suspect there is some issue with the rom update they offered some time ago. Hopefully, they will do further testing and revise the download version.
I will hold off trying again until I have spoken live with them to discuss potential causes.
I will pass along all that I find out.

Oh sure i am willing to give them credit that is why when i found out they were being so good and offered to fix it for free i came back here and told the rest of the folks... but the issue is ever since they wont give me an update or an ETA is why i say they suck... i am still looking forward to a fixed ph... try call them and they say one more week (every week) i even asked them to send it back without fixing so i can do whatever they said they can initiate it but dont know how long it will take to do that either
that is why the frustration....
update Siemens web site says shipped today...
awaiting to see what they have done on it...
After the phone was returned, then what?
Just curious if anyone who had their XDAs flashed back to PocketPC 2002 at the Siemens service center was able to try the Windows Mobile 2003 upgrade again (and have it successful).
I'd like to try to upgrade to WM2003 again -- anyone have advice for avoiding the radiostack upgrade failure that screwed my unit in the first place? My failure occured when the handset received a phone call just after I started the upgrade process.
Thanks --
Sean
got the ph back yest (overnight though they mailed it usps priority) must day am a happy camper again thanks to siemens
update:
what they did is probabbly replace the radio part of the phone,(ph has a new IMEI # and call timers were at 0) either that or they replaced the mother board and restored to ppc2002 with radio 20.10 (locked to ATT)
i went to 3.17 unlocked it again
upgraded to 2003 rom from lumpi's web site and left the radio there this time. actually getting a better signal strewngth then the new radio stack....
so there is the current status.
Siemens turnaround quote is now 30 days
I just talked to Siemens as they have had my phone for two weeks. It is still in queue to be reflashed. They also told me that they will NOT flash to WM2003 or the new radio stack. I will get it back with PPC2002 and the original AT&T radio stack. They indicated that the upgrade was the users responsibility. They also acknowledged that it may fail again leaving the phone unusable. You get the feeling that both Siemens and AT&T just wish they could forget the SX-56.
BTW, I don't consider the fact that Siemens is doing the reflash at no cost something to brag about. They would not have been in this mess if the upgrade had been more thoroughly tested.
I had planned to have the PPC Tech guys upgrade the Ram and battery in my SX-56, but I wonder if it makes any sense to further invest in this idea of a combo PDA/Phone.
david
They would have been within their rights to have never released an upgrade so how you can fault them for giving a free upgrade is beyond me, by the way I have upgraded several xda's with the wm2003 official flash and had zero problems, its the radio stack that causes all the trouble, if your radio stack isnt broken its best to leave it alone, I was very happy to get a free official wm2003 upgrade. I have a Toshiba e740 and have been told by the makers that an upgrade to wm2003 is not an option but if it was it would cost a fair bit of cash so I have a flash upgradable pocket pc that will forever be stuck on wm2002 unlike xda owners who got it free from Siemens/ATT
Can anyone tell me where they called? My 2003 upgrade failed and my PPC has failed!! I am completely lost without it!!
PS ATT has forgotten the SX56 as they no longer carry it or sell it.
Which has pretty much been the case since the begining. The ONLY support I have ever recieved has been from this site.
Work around the RSU issue to upgrade to WM2003
I used the OSImage tool from this Web site to manually upgrade to WM2003 (after I had to send my SX56 back to Siemens for a re-flash to PPC2002). I didn't upgrade the radio stack -- really just wanted WM2003 so that I could get a mute buttom.
No problems since the upgrade, for what it's worth.

I fix all dead Radio stack failure, no need to wait , same day service!

I have gone from the original AT&T ROM to the Siemens 2003 Update to the XDA 2002 SE back to the original AT&T ROM and so on and so forth...the radio stack on any of them are just down right horrible. ALL OF THEM ARE CRAP. I had to go back to using my PALM TUNGSTEN W in order to make and receive phone calls, the main reason for getting a phone right.
Its just so disappointing. SO SO Disappointing. And no one should blame Microsoft, this isn't a Microsoft issue. I have another PDA/GSM Phone that doesn't fustrate me the way this one does.
Just sickening.
One of the major issues facing with with the Wizard is no BB client so I connect to my works Bes server. Anyway - wondering - has anyone downgraded to WM2003 and installed the BB client and seen if that works?
Then - when BB for WM2005 comes out - I can then upgrade it.
Is this possible, any driver issues etc or anyone care to try it?
Scott
AFAIK, since Wizard was designed from the start as a WM5 device, there is no WM2003SE ROM available for it.
Fin
Yeah, you won't find a WM2003SE ROM for the Wizard.
If a BB client was availble I'd buy a Wizard tomorrow. But it isn't, so I won't! Waiting for thr RIM 8700 to come out on O2 early next year and will go for that I think.
Ive done some combing around the forum to try to pinpoint an answer here. But i have mixed feelings!
Ive got the cingular 8125, right out of the box. Not much done to it yet.
What ROM would you more expierenced guys recommend for it?
(cingular 8125 and AT&T simcard)
Thanks!
I just loaded the new imate one onto mine, works pretty good so far
any problems.. it will ldefinitely wipe out cingular stuff. Also is there a tool to copy the Existing ROM and reinstall it in case of issues. I too have the 8125 with ATT card and the problem is that Cingular itself doesn't support it if we have problems. I just wanted to be sure that its the rite way.. or maybe Cingular with comeup with a ROM upgrade soon.. u never know. plzz share your views..
If I were a betting man... and I am... I would say that the chances of Cingular releasing a ROM are VERY slim. They don't seam to support their branded phones. Just my thought.
Later; Lew
So you are saying that if we are hoping to get an updated ROM for Cingular, that we should probably give up that hope?
I just took a chance, yes it does clear out the cingular rom, but you get some nice extras, like microsoft pushmail, and skype preinstalled
I foolishly expected that when I bought a 8125 in March, it would have the True Push email pack that Microsoft released in in October. So I was very disappointed when it didn't have it. I did the research and found that Cingular was committed to a "first half" of 2006 for that update. They have the motivation in that I think a lot of businesses are waiting for true push before they will go with WM 5.

They do have true push email, however they appear to have partnered with Goodlink to provide push mail service.... IE.. they are pulling a verizon stunt and trying to squeeze every cent they can get out of you. If you want push mail, you will have to pay for it, they do offer a decent price on the client.
I ran the rom upgrade to the aku2 rom, works well, now if only I could figure out how to setup funobal (used to be sync4j), a suite of stuff to link to any mail server to support push mail and syncing, rather then using exchange.
