Siemens rebuild after pc2003 upgrade 1% failure
I too had the failure. I sent my SX56 to Siemens. they promised 10 working days. it turned into 18 working days. Their reason was they are having a flood of failed sx56 pc2003 upgrades.
I do not know if they are looking into the problem. I would hope they would place better controls for the upgrade if it has known failures. Such as: You must have rom version xx.xx, radio version A.xx.xx etc.
I see others attempting to load via an sd load. I am very much a novice and I do not yet know how all that works.
Russ

currently siems seems to suck... they gave me high hopes too mine was received by them on the 16 od feb and still waiting...
i am not sure if the radio stack can be upgraded by SD card... i beleiv e the only possible soln is SERIAL flashing which needs more than he cable... so we kindof have no other options yet

I saw on the xda site that special rom can be loaded which whould allow me to unlock sim. But I also saw people saying that they could not upgrade to PC2003 which the Special Rom.
I think after you get your Seimens back you may want to hold tight. I am going to wait and see what Cingular offers when the smoke clears.
They may offer a free upgrade and help.
Russ

I think Siemens are being very favourable toward people with failed upgrades, after all it is a FREE upgrade to the latest operating system, they would have been in their rights, having warned about flashing roms being a dangerous process whereby it could render the xda useless, to tell you to pay to rectify the problem. They should be commended on their willingness to help people despite the fact that it will cost them money to do so, so give credit where credit is due please.

I agree, we should not look unfavorably to a free upgrade. It is odd that so many sx56 units are showing up as failed upgrades however.
I suspect there is some issue with the rom update they offered some time ago. Hopefully, they will do further testing and revise the download version.
I will hold off trying again until I have spoken live with them to discuss potential causes.
I will pass along all that I find out.

Oh sure i am willing to give them credit that is why when i found out they were being so good and offered to fix it for free i came back here and told the rest of the folks... but the issue is ever since they wont give me an update or an ETA is why i say they suck... i am still looking forward to a fixed ph... try call them and they say one more week (every week) i even asked them to send it back without fixing so i can do whatever they said they can initiate it but dont know how long it will take to do that either
that is why the frustration....

update Siemens web site says shipped today...
awaiting to see what they have done on it...

After the phone was returned, then what?
Just curious if anyone who had their XDAs flashed back to PocketPC 2002 at the Siemens service center was able to try the Windows Mobile 2003 upgrade again (and have it successful).
I'd like to try to upgrade to WM2003 again -- anyone have advice for avoiding the radiostack upgrade failure that screwed my unit in the first place? My failure occured when the handset received a phone call just after I started the upgrade process.
Thanks --
Sean

got the ph back yest (overnight though they mailed it usps priority) must day am a happy camper again thanks to siemens
update:
what they did is probabbly replace the radio part of the phone,(ph has a new IMEI # and call timers were at 0) either that or they replaced the mother board and restored to ppc2002 with radio 20.10 (locked to ATT)
i went to 3.17 unlocked it again
upgraded to 2003 rom from lumpi's web site and left the radio there this time. actually getting a better signal strewngth then the new radio stack....
so there is the current status.

Siemens turnaround quote is now 30 days
I just talked to Siemens as they have had my phone for two weeks. It is still in queue to be reflashed. They also told me that they will NOT flash to WM2003 or the new radio stack. I will get it back with PPC2002 and the original AT&T radio stack. They indicated that the upgrade was the users responsibility. They also acknowledged that it may fail again leaving the phone unusable. You get the feeling that both Siemens and AT&T just wish they could forget the SX-56.
BTW, I don't consider the fact that Siemens is doing the reflash at no cost something to brag about. They would not have been in this mess if the upgrade had been more thoroughly tested.
I had planned to have the PPC Tech guys upgrade the Ram and battery in my SX-56, but I wonder if it makes any sense to further invest in this idea of a combo PDA/Phone.
david

They would have been within their rights to have never released an upgrade so how you can fault them for giving a free upgrade is beyond me, by the way I have upgraded several xda's with the wm2003 official flash and had zero problems, its the radio stack that causes all the trouble, if your radio stack isnt broken its best to leave it alone, I was very happy to get a free official wm2003 upgrade. I have a Toshiba e740 and have been told by the makers that an upgrade to wm2003 is not an option but if it was it would cost a fair bit of cash so I have a flash upgradable pocket pc that will forever be stuck on wm2002 unlike xda owners who got it free from Siemens/ATT

Can anyone tell me where they called? My 2003 upgrade failed and my PPC has failed!! I am completely lost without it!!
PS ATT has forgotten the SX56 as they no longer carry it or sell it.
Which has pretty much been the case since the begining. The ONLY support I have ever recieved has been from this site.

Work around the RSU issue to upgrade to WM2003
I used the OSImage tool from this Web site to manually upgrade to WM2003 (after I had to send my SX56 back to Siemens for a re-flash to PPC2002). I didn't upgrade the radio stack -- really just wanted WM2003 so that I could get a mute buttom.
No problems since the upgrade, for what it's worth.

I fix all dead Radio stack failure, no need to wait , same day service!

I have gone from the original AT&T ROM to the Siemens 2003 Update to the XDA 2002 SE back to the original AT&T ROM and so on and so forth...the radio stack on any of them are just down right horrible. ALL OF THEM ARE CRAP. I had to go back to using my PALM TUNGSTEN W in order to make and receive phone calls, the main reason for getting a phone right.
Its just so disappointing. SO SO Disappointing. And no one should blame Microsoft, this isn't a Microsoft issue. I have another PDA/GSM Phone that doesn't fustrate me the way this one does.
Just sickening.

Siemens will reflash radio stack for FREE

Just thought I would update the group on the issue of how to get the radio stack reinstalled once it decides otherwise (such as during the upgrade using the newest Siemens/ATT&T ROM). I first sent my SX-56 to the PPC Tech guys who thought that they would have a solution in short order, but the problem seems to be a mysterious program that is part of the radio stack and is required BEFORE the stack will upgrade or reinstall. No stack, no program. Microsoft seems to be the sourse of the program and the PPC Tech guys are hoping to get it from MS, but no timeline or promises.
So, we decided to see if AT&T or Siemens would help. AT&T was worthless (as expected), but Siemens stepped right up to the plate and told us to send it in and they would reflash the radio stack for free. They are aware of the problem, so regardless or whether your unit is in or out of warranty, the reflash is on-the-house. You have to call Siemens and get an RMA. They have to process the RMA rather than you doing it, otherwise it will wind up costing you $25 if you unit is over 1 year old, so make the call. Once Siemens returns the reflashed unit (I am having it sent back to PPC Techs, I am having the RAM upgraded along with the newer 1800mAH battery.
hey i figured the same out too.... but unfortunately they are bogged down. mine has been with them for over a week and they say will take another week maybe more
I posted the same one week ago

update 2weeks plus and still waiting for the to send it back...
No ETA when i call customer service.... sucks

Greedy greedy man...

Well lets just say I loved my SX56 when I first saw it, bought it, worked great upgraded it with the AT&T WM2003 ROM, now it is just a pretty PDA that can some times do phone.
The radio stack upgrade just destroyed what little signal I was alredy getting on my SX56. Now I GET NOTHING. IT IS DISCUSSTING.
If any one knows how I can get back a original 2002 ROM and radio stack??????
Anyone knows please email me at [email protected]

o2 XDA IIi Firmware Update Due May...

Just received an email direct from o2 saying that a update is due in May that will include Blackberry support.
They also confirmed that there is a known problem with the GPRS connections being lost when connecting peripherals to the connector, however they could not confirm if this will be fixed in the May update.
Care to name your source? The O2 guys I've been speaking to are insisting they have no timescale for a new rom release.
JD
I have also been told this by a company called welcom, they came in to fit car kits for all our sales reps for the XDA IIi (Andes). There was a problem with the microphone on the device and the micophone on the car kit both being on and causing a nasty echo. The man in the van told me it was a software issue and that there was a rom update due next month that will fix it.
For obvious reason I cannot give the name of the person but,
I work for a large corporate who deals with o2 for both voice and Blackberry functionallity, I had been told in January that there would be a Blackberry connect client for the XDA IIi. I therefore asked for an upadate regarding the Blackberry client and also if the bugs would be fixed and that is how I've found out about the May release.
I suspect that o2 corporate support have access & know far more than the standard customer support teams, and for this reason feel confident that there will be an update.
Well for OBVIOUS reasons you cant name your source....reason being they obviously arnt as reliable as you think because here we are and NO new ROM and NO Blackberry support.
Give your source my regards
erm, there's an image for it here on our very own FTP server!

I am also looking for a solution to this problem too...
Stevebristol, I don't know why people try to help when they receive posts like yours.....
But if it helps I've received a further update regarding the update, as you have nicely pointed out, its late...., and I have been told that it could be at least another six weeks, possibly longer.
No details as to what the update may include, but maybe the delay is due to a new OS update instead of a few bug fixes.
It would be nice if o2 included the new OS, Skype & Blackberry support, before I'm slated again, this has not been promised by o2, just my guess
I do think what was said regarding your source is a little harsh...not wishing to cast criticism myself but being involved in a MAJOR IT project for the Government means you're frequently exposed to delays in rollouts and Go-Lives...
I'm guilty of moaning regarding the release of o2 updates etc, but I have always known the reasons behind them based on my own experiences. Unforeseen errors during testing, new bugs found that crop up as a result of implementing fixes for others, etc, etc, the list goes on and on.
Cheers
Ant
Does anyone have any idea when the update will be available for the XDAIIi?
I keep checking the O2 website... and there is no mention of it. Could it be an urban myth?!
I've had my XDAIIi for three months now and I'm getting a little tired of the poor signal strength, freezing phone, unstable messaging software, poor camera picture quality, etc, etc. The XDAIIi does everything I want it to... but doesn't manage to do any of it well. I was really hoping that this update would solve at least some of my woes.
I'm even contemplating turning it into a paperweight, and reverting back to my trusty iPAQ, SD card camera and Nokia 6310i.
So I guess you are telling that it would simply be better iff Nokia buys HTC?
Hi guys
I actually work for O2 - I am a Device Specialist
I CAN confirm that there WILL be a ROM update released soon.
However there is no confirmed date for this. We cannot get any more infomation on when it will actually be released.
My advice is to just keep checking http://www.my-xda.com and if I find out anything more I will post on here
Hi Paul,
will this include Blackberry email support.
I used this on my XDA2 and went without it when I upgraded to a 2i on the promise it would be coming 'soon' that was back in March.

I won't abandon hope just yet, then.
Maybe you could try and find out what fixes the ROM update will include?
Probably the same as the i-mate ROM with O2 customisations lol.
Doubt it will be anything great.
I can comfirm that the update will include blackberry support - I think the manufacturers realised they kinda made a mistake not allowing blackberry in the updated handset!
As to other updates, were just as in the dark as you guys - you would be suprised how little we are actually involved with the manufacturer.
All I can say it watch this space
reboot and free youself!
Why not just do a hard reset and install as 'corporate'
(you'll need code 0506)
buy 'sbp pocket plus' and relax.....zzzz
Device is a lot more stable and no more annoying o2 menus
enjoy!

So how would you programatically default the install to Corporate and add in the GPRS settings at the same time?
Why not just install the i-mate ROM and never worry about O2 crap again

Hmmm.......(Xda software update released by O2)

I updated from http://www.my-xda.com/xda2i_soft2.html but didn't get the new radio version, and got the .169 rom version that is supposedly so bad.
Sooooo ummmm......What do you think is going on?
Is anyone else chaseing this, because due to major family problems I just don't have time at the moment! I can't afford to re-flash my Xda again, it can't be out of action!
**Edit - I did this yesterday. They could have fixed it since.
Not you going wrong, O2 have withdrawn the 1.11.170 ROM because of the connection and stability issues mentioned elsewhere on this site.
If you want stability and don't use Blackberry, use the ROM I made that can be found on this site. Have a look in the few recent threads here and you will find them.
Sorry to hear about your problems, hope they're sorted soon for the better.
Take care of yourself,
PUG.
I had got confused. I'll try it after christmas, once things have settled down. I'll just have to put up with no bluetooth for now
Will my warrenty/insurance be valid if I use an unoffical ROM?
Officially yes but there's always way around that.
O2 do state that only ROMs released by themselves are supported but those of us who have customised their 2i's know that most of the problems with the 2i are down to O2's software in the extended ROM causing the problems.
More often than not, most companies like that will not worry about what ROM is on the phone so long as it was released officially by a company for an Alpine device and it's not a cooked WM5 when it's never been released if you know what I mean.
Anyway, good luck and Merry Christmas.
Pug
I must say that after the last rom upgrade (69) was released and I had problems with it, o2 data support actually recomended that I install the rom from this site!! So that should tell us all something, should it not!?!?!?
Rom Updates...
Pug is spot on - .169 caused my BT headset to play up no end, but rather than re-flash to the vanilla .162 rom, I used Pug's with the 1.04 radio. This is the best of the available 02 roms, imho. BT fine, and the radio upgrade improves signal strength and clarity - nice one, Pug! BTW I also downgraded Caller ID, which solved my GPRS connection issues, and fitted a bigger battery. I am now happy to use my Alpine as my only phone, which was the plan in the first place...
Merry Xmas all

Then they say to people that to do so would invalidate their warranties. I just shout at them and tell them exactly what I want them to do for me, that sorted my last problem, didn't give them chance to read the script that said "hard reset". Wish they'd all sing from the same hymn sheet. Still, you pay peanuts you get monkies don't you.......
I actully got o2data support to send me a copy of 162 rom on a disk as they did not have it on their website, so I can always reflash back to that if I need to send the xda in for repair during it's warrenty. Thinking about it, is it worth me putting this (162) rom on the ftp site so anyone can reflash with it?
Please do, I am about to get a 2i and I plan to experiment as soon as I get it but I would like the .162 ROM to fall back on as it seems to be the most stable official release,
Thanks
Sorry it has taken a couple of days (but it is xmas   ) but I have put the 1.11.162 official o2 rom on the ftp site (ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/Uploads/Alpine/) I have uplaoded a .rar and the .exe versions hope they may be of some use to you.

I updated from this file aswell, and my Radio downgraded(?) to 1.00!
Not only this, but I applied the TomTom 5.21 upgrade at the same time, and TomTom stopped working - well, it started to lose the gps connection when i had the speaker cable for my GPS cradle plugged in and TomTom emitted a sound!
I reinstalled TomTom back to 5.1, and still got the problem, so I hard reset the XDA - same problem still!
I have now installed the .162 ExtRom with 1.04 Radio, and this seems to have solved the problem as far as TomTom is concerned, even with the latest 5.21 update. The real test will be tomorrow when I take her indoors to work in the morning, as so far (due to the snow!) I have only tested TomTom sat stationary outside the house!
Getting back to the point, though, I think I will be giving the .169 ExtRom a miss from now on!
UPDATE : I've finally gotten out and about in the car, and Installing the .162 ExtRom has solved my TTN5 problem

02 XDA Orbit

I want to get the ROM updated as my GPS is slow to load and I was told that updating the ROM will sort this out.
I haven't done this before on the XDA (have on HP iPac) so I get the idea. Having reading through many posts I am totally confused as to what I should be doing.
I have downloaded and installed Artemis_USPL and I get everything in order - however it doesn't report current ROM version and doesn't update (Active Sync seem to drop connection).
All I want to do is update the ROM to the latest version.
Therefore I want to know where I can get the latest O2 Rom for WM5, and what software I should be using to make the update.
Many thanks for any help
Eddie
(BTW - I am happy with WM5, however if I can kill 2 birds with one stone and get on to an English version of WM6 I would like to do that as well!)
losing sync
got the same problem here
Have you tried waiting the screen willgo either white or black for a period.
When using USPL it doesnt alter the device data or appearance just the CID status.
If you follow the idiots guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=311650
you should have no problems.
I have UK O2 Orbit and no problems at all as I said follow the guide and will work sometimes it seems to be taking ages and doing nothing but trust me for me it gets there.
o2 are doing WM6 updates - just take it to the store....
Thanks for the reply.
I did follow the idiots guide as mentioned, and having working in IT for 10 years found it simple enough to follow. Didn't change the fact that I couldn't get passed the "dropped" used connection and no update!
What I then did was ring o2 who did have a clue and then I rang the XDA (o2) dedicated service center.
The girl on the phone went and checked with the techs and rang me back to confirm they are installing WM6 on all XDA's that get sent back, and that the update is free!
With this information I went to my local o2 store who accepted the phone for software upgrade to WM6 and told me it will be back with me on Thursday of next week.
Problem sorted - let them do it......
Wishfull thinking....please check when they return the device...may have the SD Card with the flashed ROM on it hee hee hee...!

is your pc Vista by any chance
NO XP!
I did ask the service center direct - if you want to check give them a call on 01603 269901 - XDA2 warranty returns line.
Also I rang o2 twice on 0800 5874715 and on both occasions they confirmed they are supporting it from 23/27 of this month - so that all ties in nicely.
I will let you know when mine returns if it works and if they have upgraded the ROM etc.....
They are indeed upgrading all retuned devices with WM6. That is for sure.
I got my XDA Orbit Back from o2 yesterday after 6 days.
It has been updated (ROM, GSM etc) and has WM 6 Pro on it.
Sat Nav is still very slow to kick in - what else can I do to speed up the connection?

Have you ensured that QuickGPS is up to date?
Also when you run the GPS ensure u are static while it locates you.
Also overclock the Orbit slightly?
Hope this helps
