I dropped my xda 1 twice and had to get it repaired. For my xda2 I tried to get a good, secure solution to cover it.
Proporta seems to have a perfect alu case, but I heard that there is a problem with the gsm/gprs connectivity in the closed case.
After getting the info, that there is no cutting in signal strength, I ordered a propota and got on saturday. It does really cut minimum two bars of signal strenth, that means in some areas there is no more signal at all ( in my home for example) and the xda is constantly searching a connection...
But there is a whole in the back beside the camera whole. This is meant for the connection of an external anntena.. So would it be possible to get a connector for that anntena and ad a selfmade thin anntena on the alu case from proporta. I´m absolutly double lefthanded concerning technical things: can anybody tell me if this might be possible and get a good signal in the closed alucase???
Link to proporta case
Do you have the link to the web-site- I have been looking for a secure case
Thnks
never had a prob with signal on my properta aluminium case for xda 1 :\
That's because the XDA I has a dirty great external aerial, whereas the XDA II has a built in one. Hence when you completely enclose it in aluminum it kills the signal.
i dont think it kills signal they wouldnt design a case that does that...
you can put a 3310 inside a metal tin and still ahve signal so it shouldnt effect an triband phone
Have a look at the many posts on these forums, and over at Tekguru, from people who own the Proporta case, including myself, and most say that it definitely does reduce signal strength. It doesn't actually kill it, but it reduces it by a good 2 bars, and lets face it if you're with O2 that's enought to kill it in most circumstances.
I can only report my own findings, but as far as I'm concerned it DEFINITELY reduces signal strength.
Rogh Case for XDAII
I only have an XDA I, but:
Send me a few XDA IIs and I'll make a super tough custom case for you. The material will be Kevlar* fiber reinforced plastic with a little carbon fiber reinforcement here and there. A case like that would cut absolutely no signal stength but withstand your girl stepping onto it with the heel of her stilettos or dropping it on the floor. For a few more XDA IIs I'll make it withstand driving over it in your car as well.
How much would you be willing to pay for such a case, in case you don't have any surplus XDA II to send me?
Martin Kopplow
* similar to the stuff they make bullet proof vests of, but not as flexible.
I have the proporta alu case for both my XDA and XDA II - no signal problems on either devices when in the closed case.
Jon.
These cases are now being sold through o2 store's.
We got 5 in today and there great well reccomended
What price, they are selling for 19.99 on ebay UK.
There going for £24.99 and there the same ones they eb=ven have the company name properta on the insdie.
We only got them today so I doubt any store has them on the shop floor so go in and ask for them
The manager did our ones for £10 so i'm happy.
I just received a message that Innopocket will do the aluminum case for the MDAII/XDAII as well. they will add them to their website today.
My XDA II Porporta Aluminium Case does not reduce my radio signal strength at all either.....Bluetooth remains the same....
One thing to note about the Proporta Aluminium Case, the screw which goes onto the caseing itself for usage with the belt clip losens over a period of time casing the unit to drop off from your belt. Do take note of that. I had mine dropping off even though i was sure i had the screw really tight in the case itself
Hi,
I´ve cut a windows in the case to see who is calling. Signal strenght now is as good as w/o case.
regards
Wolfgang
Nice work
I also have to do some modification on the proporta case, because if you want to use the headphone, the plastic cover is in the way. so i have to make it a bit bigger in the cover

I have put a drop of Loctite on the threads so when tightened it will never come loose.
But I never use the darn thing now as it kills off the signal completly. 2 bars at the best of time round here.
Might be interested in the kevlar idea if it looks cool. Thats the reason I have an Alu case cos it looks cool.
I have the proporta Al case and it drops at least 2 bars when it is enclosed too. I also had the idea of a flexible thin antenna attached to the back of the case but I can't seem to find the details on the external antenna connector.
If the external antenna connectors are proprietary, why doesn't O2 release the connector? How can a company advertise having the ability to connect to an external antenna if the plug is not available to fit the socket? Does anyone know if the antenna connectors are the same between xda2 and iMate?
It gets even more annoying when it has been out of range for a few minutes and it gets lazy and decides to stop trying to reconnect to GSM and seems to crash the radio stack.

I too have been looking for the connector for months now, with no luck.
I have also noticed once the phone is out of range for a few minutes, it never bothers to try and reconnect. I am hoping the new firmware will fix this.
I have just installed the new radio stack et al. It may lower the chances of the stack crashing or giving up trying to connect, but I doubt it will provide greater coverage.
it's a nice case mod that one though i would prob put in some windowish thing to protect the screen if it fell on a sharp corner
Is anyone experiencing this problem. I have now lost my fourth stylus. The slightest knock will dislodge the stylus whilst on the belt clip. Because the xda 11 will now swivel around due to the location of the clip, stylus will fall from unit. Anybody got sources for replacements?
I haven`t lost one yet but
I must amid, these things are lovely to eat , as they are so much smaller and tinner than the IPAQ ones. And they also make a lovely toothpic.
And of course of the perfect shape at the top, they are the ultimate tool to clean out your....
Same here im on my 3rd. I have purchased more from www.pdaaddons.com
I have had mine for a little over a week and have already lost one stylus.
Looks like I will be reverting to my Rotring 600 Trio as I find the stylus way to tiny in any case.
http://www.styluscentral.com/rotring600trio.html
I tried www.pdaaddons.com but they don't mentiona stylus for the xda2.
Stylus XDA II PLUS pen!
I know ink is soooo passé...
but I got a stylus that has a dead handy ink-pen inside from brando.com!
Refills very cheap too! Very quick delivery from Hong Kong.
Tightening up the Sytlus Holder
Is ther any way to do this?
Kind regards
Alan
I have noticed that the ones o2 uk shops sell are slightly thinner than the original one that came with my XDA2, and keeps slipping out, could try some blue tack to hold it in place!!!
try ebay.
A lot of compnies are offering styli in 3-pack, which gives you 2 spares!
ccc
The trick is not to loose it!
Needs to fit better
After losing two styluses, I bought a stylus with a built-in pen at the other end. To keep from losing this stylus, I modified the XDA II case. I cut the transparent hard plastic packaging material of the stylus and attached it using electrical tape to the top of the XDA II leather case. The plastic is now blocking the path of the stylus. There is no way now for the stylus to fall unless I open the case.
I don't like cases so I don't have that option. I was wondering if there was a way to modify the silo or perhaps put some sort of compression spring/washer in the grove at the bottom end of the stylus

Real Filipino inguinity.. hehehehehe...
Almost lost my sytlus two days ago, its a good thing that I remembered that I tried to get the stylus out while in the car but had to stop because my XDA2 fell in the floor. After 2 hours my friend noticed that the stylus is missing, took me a few minutes before I remembered the attempt that I made while inside the car... hehehe.. almost made me angry at the thought of losing the stylus...
I noticed the first scratch on the corner of my Jam today. Since electronics always take the most abuse on the corners, I devised a quick and easy way to protect the corners of my Jam while I'm in Europe for the next 3 weeks. Take electrical tape or clear satin tape and place a piece over the corners. Works best if you cut a slit in the tape so you can fold it around the corner without wrinkles. In all probability the device will land on its corners if dropped or take the most abuse on the corners if scraped against something. Thus, problem solved; I did it to my digital camera too. It doesn't look half bad on either device, and if you can't stand the black corners, just use clear tape. Any tape works as long as the adhesive won't stick to the advice after you remove the tape.
damn that's dead sexy
Damn! Why didn't I think of that????
Why don't you run the tape all the way round? I think it will look somewhat better!...
I'm sorry, but that has to be the stupidest looking thing I've seen in a long time. Why don't you just get a silicon case for about $10 off of EBAY? I mean, if you REALLY need electrical tape and that's all you can find...great. But just get a cheap latex or silicon case such as the ones from JavoEdge.com.
Do you put electrical tape on the front and rear bumper of your car too?
GHETTOOOOOOO
Just curious, what specifically do you expect to happen in Europe over the next three weeks that would necessitate such a precaution when you don't prepare against similar risks at home  ?
hehehehe... Good point JPreston!!!
I don't get it! People seem to get very upset when they discover they scratched the ball mirror on the back of their JAM. Now we have a JAM covered in electrical tape. Should we all carry our devices in the original box? Or better yet never use them to keep them in pristine condition? I am not saying I didn't get a little ticked off when I found a nice big scratch in the corner after a small drop but come on! I think we're all getting a bit too precious. Anyway, to each their own.
Of far more concern is the gunk that gets on the screen from my face every time I hold the JAM to my head! I mean yuck! What the heck is up with that? Is there that much oil on my face??? I just washed it! I gave my phone to my friend the other day to make a call and his face left some sort of super oil on the screen that wouldn't scrub off for several minutes! Its gross and embarassing! I think we need some sort of face oil protector!
Does anybody have any idea for cheap screen protection? I think the prices are outrageous for the slices of film sold as protectors.
I use the cheapest of them all...
They are made for Palm devices and are sold on flea markets or "One Dollar" stores...
They cost $1 dollar the 12 Pack!
Just cut them to size and go!
scratch? i've droped my mini 2 times and got 3 dent edges. damn sad. The stupid casing they gave me is getting pretty loose. I put it on my belt.... so everytime i knock it seems that pouch just flings out. The screw and the plastic seems to have worn off.
I think i'm gonna go to a skinning shop to hide the dent edges.
try to buy a leather case for Nokia 7610. it fits.
You dont use that in the box lether case. It will easily fall of that tiny hook.
Wit the lether case of Nokia, it is mounted sideway into the belt by a leather that is sewed.
mine has never fallen. Even if it falls off the belt when you undress, the leather case is so stiff that it will not dent the mini.
@Emil...
Can you post a picture of your JAM in the Nokia case for us to see?

Dropped mine on a concrete floor from about 1.5 meters and got a really ugly dent on one of the corners of the battery cover. The cover wouldn't even go back on!
Easy fixed though. Just took a plastic pen and pushed the dent out from the inside. It still shows a slight dent and small scratches if you look closely, but what the heck...
Anyone know of any metallic paint (model, SKU, UPC code) that I could use on my JAM? I rarely put on my seatbelt, and the one time that I decide to play safe, I scratch up the corner of my JAM. I'd never go "ghetto" as one person put it in the thread, but I'm sure there's something out there to match it up. Any ideas?
Get the jam off of your belt and put it in a proper car holder and you will not only protect it from getting scratches from your seatbelt, you will also get it charged while driving. And also one less reason not to wear a seatbelt that could save your life in the case of an accident.
Incidentally, can anyone recommend a decent car kit for the JAM? I want one I can mount with some amount of ease somewhere on the console... I don't like those ones that stick on the windscreen.

www.brodit.com
Just don't order it from Expansys as all their product descriptions for Brodit are messed up. Does anyone know where else to buy Brodit because I still need the mounting clip for my car (Expansys kept sending the wrong one). Can you buy from them (Brodit) directly?
Thanks.
I bought this and now I don't want it as I'd prefer a leather case (plus it's the wrong one for my Wallaby). It's a translucent silicone (rubbery feel but won't rot) sheath that fits around the PDA like a condom! I bought it for £5 so I'll let it go for the same amount but post anywhere in the UK for free. It'll provide your Himalaya with protection against knocks, bumps etc but it doesn't offer any covering of the screen.
Regards,
Neil.
is it waterproof to a certain degree?
is the screen covered?
if so..will take it!
can pay via paypal...
Well it'll most likely keep water out of the bits it covers but I wouldn't call it water proof. The screen is not covered. I've attached a photo of it so you can see for yourself.
Regards,
Neil.
thanks for posting a pic neil..
dunno if its what im lookin for tho..
as im using my xda on a motorbike with ttn5 i need a waterproof solution!
After a week of using a cheapo leather case I pulled my SGT out and found that the back panel (white) edges have dark splotches on them, almost like its been placed over a flame. Tried rubbing it off with all sorts of stuff but it just wont come off. My wife has had an iPhone for 2 years and the white panel on the back still looks new. Quality of the material perhaps? anyone else have this and able to clean it?

More like the cheap leather case of yours tainted the black color onto the back of your tab. I had this kind of case before, but luckily I have a layer of screen protector at the back, even that layer is tainted..It's not the tab, just the cheap casing.
no discoloration here, my tab is naked all the time tho
As a rule, as soon as I get my devices I get them laminated (a good one at that) both front and back. Thr surface on the front is resistant to oily hand marks and the back one well lets just say keeps it shining for a good 6-8 months before I get a new one done. This way selling it is never a problem. Cheers!

I had that problem with my Galaxy Tab and the Samsung leather case that came with it. It seems that the soft fabric they line the inside with rubs off onto the Tab. It's not actually that big of a deal to get off. I took some rubbing alcohol (70% Isopropyl Alcohol), poured it on a cotton ball and used a small amount of pressure. It came right off and my Tab looked brand new.
I am in India, waiting for the free leather case from Samsung. One concern is about the heat,if the back is encased, can the device heat up? Will it affect it adversely ?

I have not experienced any problems with the device heating up while in the case. To be perfectly honest, the only time I have even felt the device get slightly warm is when I'm charging it via the wall charger. Even then, it doesn't get that warm. If you're worried though, you can always charge the device outside of the case. While you're using it though, you won't have to worry about it overheating in the case.
Put on an invisishield before you put it in the case. There are a few companies that sell then online for a cheap price.
I still can't get it off, anyway I ditched the case and made one myself instead. You can find it in the SGT accessories forum

I had/have the same problem from a black cowhide case I got from acceport.com - unsightly black blotches on the white back. I had a go at the firm that sold me the case but, naturally, have had no reply. The back almost looks new now after plenty of polishing with an almost daily cleaning and polishing with an all-purpose cleaner I have seen many of the phone shops here in Thailand use to clean telephone screens, etc. Still it will never look like new - it will always have some visible signs of the staining.

Not that my reply is helpful to your situation but it's interesting that each US carrier chose their own different design for the back. AT&T definitely chose wisely with their matte carbon fiber styling. I was in a T-Mobile store this weekend looking at their Tab and that glossy black style is a terrible finger print magnet and now I am reading that the white can discolor. Way to go AT&T, your customer service sucks but someone made a good decision at a terrible company.
same problem here.. black cheap leather... dirty white back, I'll try with alcohol, anyways I buy a new "clip-on" leather that seems look better and it has stand
