Finally…some competition to Sandisk / Socket SD WiFi
Do you want to connect to your WLAN ? No problem…
Mobile Planet is selling the PRETEC SD WLAN cards.
Installed one yesterday…works like a charm in my MDA II.
After playing / experimenting (but never being able to reliably use it)
with Sandisk and Socket cards I have now 100% reliable WiFi connection.
at what speed and i'm not talking about the reported connection speed but the real world speed
thinking if the sd interface can reach those 11Mb speeds when sending
Speed...oh well, I'dont have any tools to test it.
POCKET SKYPE works...

POCKET SKYPE works...
I have to comment on Mobile Planet... It took me a year to get off their spam list after ordering from them once. Never again.
@vegasmda: you should replace the link in your posting by a more anonymous link (just for security reason). the current link leads directly to your basket Stanley...
i do not know what misuse could be done by this i feel that it's better when nobody directly lands in you basket.

CF Wireless LAN card
This is just to report that I just bought and fitted a ProLink WL201 wireless LAN card and it works like a treat, including with the access point our local pub landlord has set up. I'm very pleased with it as I can now answer all the quiz questions that I don't know. As this CF card is about a third of the price of many others, I thought you'd like to know.

Are you using the backpack, or do you mean it's an SD card?
Thanks!
CF card in backpack
wtharp2, It's a CF card in the backpack - a little cumbersome but it saves a lot of money in UK as gprs is expensive with O2. Regards, Derek

Just bought an XDA2 - partly because I understand WiFi add-ons will be available soon.
Any news on this - or, if they are out there, anyone with experience.
My home wireless network is Apple Airport, by the way, but includes a PC without problem.
Thanks...
I didn't believe there were any plans at the moment for a dedicated Wi-Fi backpack. Instead take a look at the SDIO Wi-Fi card being offered by SanDisk:
http://www.sandisk.com/retail_sdwifi.html
My friend thought he had picked up somewhere that the XDA 2 had an internal slot that is eventually going to be used for wi-fi. Can anyone shed any light on this?
I certainly would prefer an integrated wi-fi solution so that I can use the sd slot for whatever I decide.

havent heard about a wifi backpack apart from speculations from people here
but i have heard about an upcomming sdio wifi card which also had connectors for sd ram cards at the same time
SD Wi Fi with256Mb of storage
Check this link out, This could be an answer to many problems.

"My friend thought he had picked up somewhere that the XDA 2 had an internal slot that is eventually going to be used for wi-fi. Can anyone shed any light on this?"
I think this is related to the marketing hype generated by O2 etc. Essentially they are referring to the capability of inserting a CF card based WiFi solution into the XDA2 backpack.
Hello everybody,
I am using an XDA2 (=iMate) which sports a SDIO slot; furthermore, the device is listed in sandisk's compatibility listing. To connect to our wireless network (811.b), I use the Sandisk SDIO-Wireless-Lan-Adapter. I had no problems connecting to the access-point, I get a stable connection immediately, the indicated connection speed is 11 Mbit/sec. Since the distance to the ap is very small, link quality is near 100%.
The problem is that the maximum transfer performance I get is very poor. I get no more than 250Kbit/sec (=30Kbyte/sec), no matter if I do webbrowsing or simply copy files from other computer in the local area network. This is nothing compared to the ~5000Kbit/sec (=600Kbyte/sec) that an 811.b adapter should be capable of. I tried changing channels, but that did not change anything. I also hard-reseted my xda2 and installed nothing but the sandisk-drivers...no changes. Alternatively, I tried the driver from socket....works, but no changes in performance.
I have got the same problem at two different wireless networks (at work & at home), so it seems that the problem is on my system. I cannot test more than these two networks, since I do not know any others.
Has anybody got an idea what could cause this problem? How fast are your XDA2s with SDIO-Wifi?
Thanks in advance,
Stephen.
I had the same problem I returned my card and got a Socket one instead (from Expansys) I worked immediately.
After I returned it I read somewere that you must set your access piont to work at only the slower 11mbs and not the faster 22 or 56mbs and that will resolve the Sandisk problem.
I cannot verify this as I had returned my card, but my access piont was a Dlink one runnig at 56mbs
Sam
hi stephob12,
after reading this read i have googled around and found an article about socket sdio wlan card in a german computer magazine. the wrote that the sdio-specs do not allow transfer speeds > 35,7kb/sec regardless what sdio-card you are using (sandisk or socket). your performance of about 30kb/sec is really near the theoretical maximum limit.
i have no experience with those cards but i had planned to purchase one for my xda2 but i am slightly disappointet about that sdio limit :? . at home i use a bluetooth connection to my dsl access point and the speed is very good especially when you know that bluetooth with its 723kbit/sec is much slower than 802.11b with 11mb/sec.
i will now overthink whether to purchase a sdio wlan-card or not. at least not for the price of around 100 us$ or euros they have at the moment.

peter
Hi,
can you post the URL of the article you found?
or send it per PM if you prefer ...
and what do you mean with "socked one", which one is it ?
and no one has any information about how the Compact Flash one is working, by using the back pack - this would be an alternative, don't you think???
ciao
the card is a "SOCKET" you can see it on www.expansys.com it is offered as an alternative to SANDISK at thew same price.
Thank you for the quick answer,
now I sow it, it seems to be more interesting than the Sandisk, I wanted to buy one ... but in that case it is worth to wait, to find a Socket near to where I live
May be I can find it in China or in the USA,
there is another brand - I forgot the name - which will be sold soon at CompUSA ...
I'm trying to find it ...
wil post it when I got it

Cheeper SanDisk SD WiFi card
Hi,
i think ive found (cheers google  ) the same SanDisk wifi card u guys were talking about for $85 US (£47 GBP sounds much cheeper) at blueproton.zoovy.com so i was gunna ask if ne1 had ne experience with them but u obviously do.
just a couple of questions, am i right in guessing that SDIO stands for Secure Digital Input Output? how secure are these devices? what sorta encryption base do they use? and does ne1 know if there is any talk of bringing out a faster (22g or 54g) card on SD or CF?
Cheers
Smiley
Smiley,
SDIO WiFi card offers you WEP with 128bit key and this is your basic Wifi security. I am not sure if the SDIO card does any encyription. I suspect not.
As far as I know there is no 802.11g card (SDIO or CF) yet. I just read the news about a 802.11g chip for mobile devices. See below :
http://www.infosyncworld.com/news/n/4968.html
This may mean we may see cards based on this chip in the future or there may be products using this technology to deliver built-in Wifi capability.
Hope this helps. Regards

does this mean that the socket one works at the full 11mbps withought having to downgrade ur main network? :?
Cheers k_kirk for the link, looks interesting but i can see that little beauty costing a small fortune!!

Hello all,
I've got this Socket SDIO WLAN card, and it's terrible with regardws to throughput, but it's okay besides from that. I can't even stream a 300kb/s video, and that's not impressive... In cradle via USB it's of course okay, and having problems with SIP VOIP client as well, very very sad.. I wrote Socket, and got a reply that indicates they're sorry for this, but that it's caused by some HW-related issues on my device (QTEK 2020)
Urgh...

Hi. i was wondering if anyone can help me out. i have the Spectec Mini SD WiFi card (SDW822 Mini SD, 802.11b standard). The card worked real well and now 6months later, it doesn't work. This is what i mean. anyone who uses it sees a green blinking light on its antenna and the device "sees" a hotspot and asks if i want to connect to it. Now, the light only blinks as if it is finding the correct setting, but doesn't pick up on a WiFi signal at all. Even sitting at my university in a "hotspot" in my student center, the card doesn't seem to be picking up the signal at all even though the appears the card is operational (the blinking green light).
i am not sure what to make of it, like if there is something busted inside the card or not, or is it my actual device (even though it worked for 6 months, why it doesn't work not i have no clue). i tried installing the drivers again, and even installing the latest driver provided by Spectec. nothing works though nor was their support much help (they just answered to uninstall and then reinstall the drivers but duh, i already knew that lol). can anyone let me know a solution like if i need to buy a new one or not? i miss having the WiFi on my ppc/phone and i don't have an unlimited data plan, plus even if i did, GPRS is painfully slow.
if this helps, my phone is an E-TEN G500 running Windows Mobile 5.0 (AKU 1.1.4). i hope i can hear a response soon. i may just end up having to buy a new one but i would like to hear anyone's thoughts. i hope you guys can help me!
by the way, i don't think it is my SD card port b/c i can still use any other card that i put in the slot with no problems like my GPS and the card i use to store my music and such.
Does anyone have anything to say? i tried their support again and still told me the same thing from their automated e-mail then send out and its really frustrating. even more so, no one has been able to say anything about to respond to this thread. please let me know anything that could lead me to a solution. i dont want ot have to buy another card to see if it works or not.
I guess no one wants to help me i guess these forums are useless if no one wants to help one another. i was hoping this would be a simple solution. i am gonna have to buy another card and see if it is my original card or if it is my device. i even upgraded the OS to AKU 2.2 but still nothing with my original card.
thanks everyone for your help
I'm trying to come up with a solution to add wifi to my vogue without loosing my storage, does anyone know of either a bluetooth wireless adapter that works with the Vogue or of an SD or MicroSD wifi card that also has storage? I've found an adapter for microSD to SD and already measured it and it should fit with the extended battery cover with the OEM battery.
Has anyone accomplished this? and how did you go about doing it?
You are basically screwed on wifi. You can probably set up a BT pan though at home.
There is a wifi micro SD card but very little testing has been done. The card would stick out of the slot probably 1/4" if not more.

I've seen that, but having something stick out isn't a viable solution, which is why I found a microSD to SD adapter that will fit between the stock battery and the extended battery cover, this does work using the spectec SDIO wifi card, however I then lose my storage card. I've been looking into the eye-fi card which doesn't support AD-HOC I'm debating about picking up the 2gb version and attempt to hack the firmware to get it working but I was hoping there was a bluetooth wifi adapter I know they exist for palm but I haven't found one that works with ppc.
If anyone would be willing to help with trying to get the eye-fi 2gb+wifi card working on ppc that would be great.

What are you talking about with the microSD to Sd adapter? You are basically screwed if you want wifi & have 2 options.
1. Dump Verizon & stich to AT&T
2. Get the Omnia or Touch Pro from Verizon.
Let me guess you don't have a data plan with Verizon

No, I have Sprint and I have an unlimited data plan however it would be nice to add wifi especially since I'm now living in an area that sprin't doesn't have service in so I'm roaming on the verizon network and the data is slow as all hell.
looks like that wifi card is your best choice, you might try accessing your storage card via internet? Or just carry it around with the card...
and if you carry around a camera(I doubt you do): http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...st=n&iht=y&usc=All+Categories&ks=960<br ></a>
I was wondering if there was a wifi card that operated throught the vogue's accessory slot, you know the one on the bottom...

Not sure what you mean by the accessory slot? Are you referring to the mini USB? At any rate the answer is no.
hi, so ive been experimenting with transfer speeds to the SD-CARD with my nexus one.
so far i managed :
2mb/sec using the stock USB cable, with eclair, same with froyo stock kernel.
via WiFi tether and connecting a laptop to it, transfering files via FTP server on the android device
1.5-2mb/sec on froyo tethering
using the wifi tether app on eclair, around 600kb/s (fail? or maybe some cyanogen issues)
i recently upgraded to a CLASS6 transcend 16gb sdcard
yet the results are the same.
i tried a few SD-CARD testing apps, all results were around 2mb/s
is this some sort of hardware/software limitation?
did anyone get passed 2mb/s?
in theory my card should reach 6mb/sec write speeds.
so im hoping we can share our experiances.. and maybe come to some conclusion on whats going on, and finally put these issues to rest.
So you're trying to do what? You're on cellular, wifi, tethered, SD card speeds.....
I don't get the point.
If you're wanting to benchmark your SD card, maybe this program? I haven't tried it yet, just finally thought about searching. http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/performance.test/
You say "mb" which isn't correct for anything (unless you really mean "millabit"). Do you mean megaBIT (Mb) or megaBYTE (MB) / sec ?
I just ran several tests from this Vista PC using ADB Push to the SD card (a 16GB Class 6), and I see 9-13 megabit/second or 1.1 - 1.3 megabyte/second rates, at file sizes from 10 to 25 MB.
This is a Vista work PC, running around 40 applications, Symantec AV and Firewall and all manner of other crap. If I think about it, I'll pound out a test from a real computer later.
lol Why are you people giving him such a hard time ?
He wants to figure out the fastest transfer speeds. Who gives a crap about Mb Mb MB or benchmarking his SD.
N1 transfer speeds are slow regardless of the SD card. Im not sure why.
I would like to know if file transfers over USB , or Wifi result in faster transfers.
I think the OP is wanting to do the same thing.
Using the Websharing or FTP via Efile sometimes gave me better results than USB.
lol yea be gentle guys. But yea I remember reading that it's always gonna be slower using USB and Phone, it's better to take your card out and use a reader. It's usually at least 2 times faster when I take my SD out and use a reader

Those are just a few of many more, I am sure.
But none of the the existing Nexus One SD card threads are worded like " Nexus one maximum transfer speed (using all methods)", so lets just add this one to the pile please.

Thanks for the post, regardless of the patronizing of others... I've wondered the same thing as I've only gotten 2mb/sec going through the USB mount in android. I thought something was wrong with my computer so I've tried both pc and mac with the same speeds. I thought it was my memory card so I plugged it directly into a card reader and got 4x's the speed...
My main reason for wanting this to be fixed or acknowledged is for sync'ing music through programs like Salling Media Sync. It seems to me a wifi alternative would be faster even at 802.11g if it's related to the USB interface... let me know what you find I'm curious...
My wife's transfer speed was 3.6 on the stock SD card...
I have a class 6 and speed is under 2
I try to switch cards later and see if my class 6 goes faster on her N1
I too have never seen faster than 2mbish, even when i upgraded from stock to a class 2 8gb, and then to a class 6 16GB
