A few quick XDA2 / M1000 questions.... - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

Hi All,
I'm considering getting an XDA2 (actually on orange so it will be the SPV M1000 or whatever they call it)
A few questions:
1) Does the XDA2 have a CF slot ? The O2 & Orange website don't state what types of card it supports.
2) If it doesn't have CF, how easy & cheap is it to have wireless networking? (not via BT)
3) Lastly, because the M1000 & the XDA2 both appear to be the same device could I install a UK O2 rom if the Orange one is lousy ?
Thanks
Neil

1: no CF slot but you can buy an addon back pack with built in CF slot
2: it used SD/MMC and SDIO so you can buy a SDio wifi card to use
3: yes you can put the o2 rom on but is there any need? lol

Thanks Gaz,
Real shame about no CF though I'm thinking I might stick with the Ipaq 4150 and just get a small mobile.
Cheers for the info
Neil

wifi on xda2
Why would you want CF ?
If its just for wifi then you can buy an SD wifi card (known as an SDIO card) much much smaller than CF
thanks !

CF stuff seems a lot cheaper than SDIO (ie. SDIO wifi looks to be around £80 whereas CF Wifi can be had for £30)
Also CF seems to have a lot more choice of available cards.

The SDIO slot only supports SD and MMC cards. If you want to use CF (or CFII cards) you need the backpack for the XDAII, that should be available for appr. 120 Euros. For further features of the backpack please follow this link:

Backpack Problems

Nothing new here, but i am having problems with my Backpack and would like to find out from other backpack users if they are having problems. in order to be able to evalute the problems and possibly approach o2 could you please say where and when purchased, nature of problem, has this problem been from day 1 or did it develop.
thank you in advance, but i'm tearing my hair out here and i'd like to know the experiences of others before i go to o2 with what they may consider is a unique problem.

I have the backpack, bought it in may04. Don't use it much except maybe on holiday.
What problem are you having ?
Bought mine from O2 at same time as Xda II, works a treat although not used the CF slot must, mainly used with LCD projector for powerpoint.
Control 2 x XdaII & backpacks at work and haven't seen any problems.
If you post the exact problem I'll see if I can replicate it.
Bought mine from a PDA store in Kuala Lumpur about 4 months ago.
So far have experienced no problems.. Use the CF slot for memory cards and a Dell WiFi card. Use the video output with my Epson LCD projector.

backpack
My problem is i cannot get system to recognise any compact flash card i insert. first card i bought was fuji - i inserted the cf card and the system requested drivers! then i tried a bytestor same problem. i invested in a card reader and formatted the cards still the same problem. on one of the forums here i spotted a download 'bpinsert' i tried that and altho' it is a shortcut to a non-existent program the fuji card was recognised for a short while and i seemed to be able to access it, then the system froze and after a soft reset the problem started again. i have the part number, serial number and model number and am about to approach htc to see if i have a good product, if not i'll have to buy a new digital camera to use the 256mb flash cards and i'll sell the backpack on e-bay to some schmuck. (joking). the thing that is making my tear my hair out is i bought an sdio gps unit, as i was going to lose storage space i bought a backpack, now i find the sdio unit will not work without an update with autoroute 2004 and altho' the back pack does work with presentations - about three per year - i can't use the storage facility. oh well one lives and learns. still i could save some money on a new camera i know this guy............................
BackPack Problem
Hi,
I got my BackPack about 3 months ago, the reason I bought it was to do my powerpoint presentations using my Imate (xdaII). But the problem I found is that the Imate gets too slow. Have you also experienced the same problem?
Regarding the CF Card, it works fine, reading and writting, note that I heard 1st set of backpack manufactured early this year can not write to BackPacks!
One more problem, if you use XCPUScalar Softwar (to speed-up your PDA to 530 Mhz) then it can not recongnize the CF Card in the BackPack, you can not read or write either (acutally as if it does not exist). I guess this is due to the Speeding up software. If I enable it, then CF card is available and the Imate can recognize it.
Unkown card error
ianlake-
I've got the same problem - you're not alone. I am trying to use a 1 gig IBM microdrive and a 128MB noname card. Both, from time to time, ask for drivers for the "unknown card". What's worse is the error is sporadic and I can't rely on using the storage for anything important on the go. My desktop has a built-in reader (in which both cards work fine) and one of the main reasons I bought the backpack was to transfer files quickly from desktop to CF to I-mate. I haven't been able to find any tips in my searches but please keep me informed of any progress you've made.

This is certainly the answer to my problem, uninstalled XCPU Scalar and things are all OK, including some things that i hadn't really noticed.
I think i should contact XCPU Scalar and report the problem.
Thank you GoldenSands.

Most welcome "ianlake".. but does your Imate go very slow when you connect it to the projector and run a presentation? Even if it is connected to the monitor!
from what i've been able to read then when one display using the backpack the fps is limited to 1-2
which could cause it to seem pretty slow

Sorry, but what is "fps"??
The only reason I bought the BackPack is to run the presentations through my Imate, and I was unable to do so; due to the very low speed I get when it is connected to the projector. Actually it gets slow once I run IA Screen Mirror.
I got IA Screen Mirror Ver 2.01 (Build 15055)
Is any one aware about a newer version? and from where can we download it?
fps == frames pr second
as in how many pictures you get every second

yes, horribly slow, but by the time i get round to doing my presentations at the end of a boring lesson my students have gone to sleep - so no-one notices.

Спасибо !!!
I use my backpack with a compact flash modem and I did'n face any problem with it. But after purchasing a sandisk connect plus, WiFi+128 MB card, the device is getting very very slow plus it is only recognizing the memory part and not the WiFi part.
Originally I wanted to use my i-mate with WiFi but nochances.
I even formated my device several times but the original driver is nor working.
Also after contacting sandisk directly I got no help!!!!!!
RE
FI, no overclocking programs like XCPUSCALAR etc work with backpack. The files in the CF card will not be recognized if overclocking progam is installed especially if you set the speed above the default speed setting. Also, GPS performance is erratic.
I've changed my backpace twice. Firstly, it was a faulty backpack that could not recognised my CF card after a few weeks of usage. The 2nd time was the backpack battery konks out after about a year of usage. Could be due to end-of-life of backpack battery. All were changed within the warranty period of the backpack.

Inegrating WiFi SDIO card inside Magician?

Did anyone experiment with integrating a wi-fi SDIO card INSIDE the Magician? I am curious to know if there is enough space inside the case to solder in the internals of the Sandisk WiFi card.
Would also be interesting to know if it is possible to integrate the Sandisk 256 meg wifi card but leave out the Mem and wire it back to the SDIO pins so that the card slot could still be used to plug in a 1g-2g card and still enjoy built-in wifi...
Thought I ask it here, perhaps someone heard something. In case I put a bug in anyone's ear, a reminder that experimenting with something like this will void the warranty... so at your own risk But if you decided to do it, let me know
I think that's impossible because there is almost no space inside the magician. Moreover, such modification will mostly disable the fuction of the SDIO slot when you enable the sdio wifi card, I blieve it is pointless to do so.
Why don't buy a blue angel or wait for the next generation of magician if you really need wifi but do not want to use an external wifi sd card.
Sorry for jumping in here . ..
Is the Magican Qtek s100 support the 256mb WiFi SD card.. ?
Sandisk says NO on my question to thre support .
Here is the answer below..
........................................................
Got this on my question from Sandisk about the s100 / wifi 256mb SD..
SanDisk Response: (12/20/2004 11:04)
Dear Joachim
Unfortunately, due to lack of Custom Bus Driver on your device (MOST HTC DEVICES), the unit will not support this card. We hope that your device manufacturer will soon come up with a fix on this issue.
We appologize for any inconviniences this may have caused you. We recommend that you use the SD WIFI CARD with no memory instead.
Kind Regards,
Sudhi K.

Bad Luck Carlis
please, do you use sandisk or socket drivers with your sandisk card ?
thank's
I use the driver provided with the card (sandisk)
But I will try the socket (i heard that they work better)

improve sandisk sdio wifi card performance

i got a sandisk sdio wifi card two weeks ago, for my brand new tsm500 (same as xdaII) and at first was very disappointed as card was very slow. Supposing was due to some special configuration of my home wireless network, i tried all the tips i know about, with no results at all. Took a look on the net and found out that most of users of this card got the same problem. but found the solution, too, on a spanish forum: uninstall sandisk drivers and install the ones from www.socketcom.com, its sdio wifi card has the same chipset. new drivers makes card much faster, has got a more friendly desing and its configuration is very easy. just try it and post the results.

Sandisk 256MB + Wifi and MDA Compact
These drivers don't work with Sandisk 256MB + Wifi and MDA Compact. I don't know witch devices doesn't work but I think it's the Sandisk 256MB + Wifi.
Do the Sockets drivers work with the standard SD WI-FI (the one without the ram) and the MDA Compact IMATE Jam?
These drivers work fine for me, using a standard Sandisk Wifi card (without extra RAM) on a XDA2
Is that the low voltage sandisk card?

Yes, it will work. SanDisk only came out with 2 SDIO WiFi devices, the first one having no storage, and the second on with 256MB of storage. SO if your card is the one without storage, it will definitely work.

Wireless SD Cards and Chipsets...

Quiz question. I've been doing some research into SDIO wifi cards for WM2005 and my SPV M1000.
What i want to know is, What chipset do Socket SD WLAN cards use? Is it per-chance: "Inprocomm"
Reason i ask is, i've ordered a SAFECOM SD wifi card, which ive heard doesn't have drivers for WM2005, however, it use the above chipset.
Alternativley, does anyone have drivers for this model card, or a way to make it work?
Cheers,
Tim
