"XDA Developers Rom" questions - MDA, XDA, 1010 Software Upgrading

I flashed my ROM with the XDA Developers Rom and it works ok but I have an issue which bugs me and I wondered if you guys could help me correct it.
1 ) When I get an SMS message, I don't get the popup "balloon" with the message text in it anymore. I have to remove the stylus, tap on the envelope or inbox to read. Small thing, but massively annoying and I can't see any upside to NOT having that little balloon pop up (which disappears automatically after 10 secs anyway).
Thanks for your help
Marcus

the special rom is a pretty old rom these days
pretty few people use it i would say
everybody else cook their newer 2003 or 2002 roms in the rom kitchens
the SE Rom is an older rom that xda1 sold these days comes with

Oh right. Well, I don't want to have a go at cooking my own as I read already so many horror stories.
Even though the special ROM is old, I didn't expect it to have core problems all the same.

Actually, the WM2003 is MUCH FASTER than the PPC2002PE...
Any way, in "sounds and notifications > incoming SMS" there should be a tick "show message on screen" or something like this. :?:

Yep, thanks Bob. Found the setting and all working fine.
While I appreciate the XDA Rom being available, it's pretty lame if it's an old one and one which isn't used anymore.
Is there a reliable source for cooked 2003 ROMs anywhere ? i realise that any ROM sources should be reliable, which I why i ask you guys.....
Marcus

www.romkitchen.de is probably the best ROM kithen. You can get most of the latest PPC2002 and WM2003 ROMs togather with "must have" equipement.
I use 4.01.16 , but I"d not recommend it - too much T-mobile stuff... The only valuable thing about it is the built-in PDF viewer (+almost no bugs).

??New versions *W*M*2*0*0*3*??

Hello,
does anyone know when the final version of W*M*2*0*0*3 will be released? And when it will be available to us? Was it released by Microsoft, yet?
I hope it will solve problems with memory card erasures and missing "More" tab in Phone Settings...
Thank you.
The "missing more tab" is merely missing because one does not need to change bands on 900/1800 phones: US versions will have this tab, I'm sure.
What I am not so sure about is how much pressure from the customers there is to bring WM2003 to this unit, with the XDA II coming and all.
probaly lots of pressure... but no inclination from the relevent(sp?) parties...
As if they would listen to us anyways? I mean we already know how *helpful* O2 are in the 'after care' department so what chance is there of them bringing out a rom?
From my experience of their compilation and testing of previous roms the development department must be VERY under funded as it is.
I think all 3 of them will be working overtime to prepare 2003 for the XDAII and wont really care about those that have already provided their cash...
one glimmer of hope I think is that the XDAII has the same rom size as the XDA... therefore will it be possible to 'borrow' the rom from that and put it in the XDA ? .... or will they take 3 months of their project management to impliment restrictions and locks on the device... (time they could have spent porting it to the XDA)
I'm sure I'll prolly buy one... the pretty colours dazzle me.... but I hear Intel are planning a new Xscale cpu for 2004.... which is meant to be a lot better than this one... so will our brand new xdaII be dead as roadkill by the same time next year?
and I just had a thought.... the current XDAII cpu is an Xscale... and the XDA is a strongarm.... so there goes the 'borrowing' idea :?
yes I type while I think..
yes I dont delete text I decide is wrong before posting
XDA developer Peter Poelman:
I want the "More" tab to setup Cell Broadcast and auto pick-up - those settings were on this tab too.
ALL:
So you think that it'll be hard to get the final release? That defines a question - where is the kitchen rom from? It's a silly question, I know... But if you want to answer, send me an private message.
Thanx
Correction - If you want to give me an answer...
Sorry for my english...
It would appear that the version we have is OEM
the T-mobile branding I'm not so sure about maybe its a beta internal release inside T-mobile.
Remember though that just because they have it.... doesnt mean we will.
There is even a Apple OSX for Intel machines... Apple has currently no intentions of releasing it but does have 8 developers slowly working away
AOL for linux ? yes there was one..... but apart from the early beta which has since disapeared nobody has heard anything about it since.
Stranger things have happened (or have not as the case seems to be here)
Ok 2 things here. For the person wanting the "More" tab on the phone settings, which ROM version are you using? I am using 4.00.16, and it is in there. Perhaps this is not part of the ROM version, but depends on what radio stack is being used?
Secondly, I wouldn't be too surprised to at least see a T-Mobile release of WM 2003, but I also wouldn't guarantee it. They have released - ok not released - but a couple different betas have become "available" so we know they are working on it. I should say we know they were working on it. No telling now, as no new betas have appeared since June or July.
The person who wanted the "More" Tab was me I use 4.00.11 and don't want to install 4.00.16 until there will be a "clear" version without T-Mobile add-ons. The "More" tab must be part of the ROM because it is a part of system! I have radio stack 4.21. My boyfriend has the same version of radio stack, but PPC2002 and he has the "More" Tab.
About the new versions of those betas - maybe they have it better secured?

if you installed a based ROM, meaning no add-on software or not cook with the kitchen, there will be a more tab on you setting, but if you add some software to the ROM the setting for the more tab will be overiden, anyway you can still setup this thing in the registry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel... the setting for keylock is there and also for the setting of automatic answer is there, just change the value.

And what about Cell Broadcast...?

What do you mean, SMS Broadcasting? it is in the HKEY_CURRENT_USERS\Software\Microsoft\SMS\Protocols\Broadcast...

Old ROMS.... really that bad?

As you can see from my profile, I seem to be running one of the oldest ROMs around on 2002 OS. My phone signal seems pretty good, the OS behaves reasonably well, so what am I really missing by staying at this version? After reading many of the posts here, I just can't see going to WM2003 as anything other than risky. Can someone point out the advantages of upgrading my ROM, and sorry if this is a really stupid question. To me reliability is more important than having cool features like landscape. Any comparisons would be welcome, or point me to the correct thread. Thanks.
There is no much risk in ROM flashing as long as you are doing the right steps .. but it's the RSU that's risky, so don't mess up with it unless really needed.
WM2003 has some improvements over PPC2002, but I agree it's not on the core functions ... but most of the current s/w are compiled on WM2003 with no guarantee it will work on PPC2002
So, if you do have ALL s/w you want right now, then there no rush to upgrade ... some enhancements in WM2003:
1. SMS sender name displaying
2. GPRS "Always on" attachement
3. Two sliders for volume
4. WMA files as ring tones
5. MMS with 3rd party s/w
Thanks for the information. It was exactly what I needed.

Best Performing ROM to date

Hi,
I just got my hermes back from being repaired. They had to change the whole board inside and thus there is a new (Chinese!) rom on it. I need to install an English ROM again as well as change the keyboard layout (what fun!).
Can anyone tell me which ROM seems to have the least problems right now? I looked through a number of threads but its hard when they are 10+ pages each.
Thanks in advance.
I found LSV's WM6 was heaps heaps faster than other roms I've used in the past....navigating on it felt very quick and responsive.
Only problem I had with it was I had to apply the ATI fix from a thread Slueth posted to resolve. I found the ATI bux only affected the mediaplaying program Coreplayer. And I also had to apply Slueth's A2DP fix as well...after that perfect skip free music from both bitpool set to 30 and 48 (can be set by TweakUI in Start->settings->system->TweakUI).
Can anyone help me out with a recommendation?
Use LVSW
See my signature for the link, but it is the BEST one out there, VERY stable, excellent battery life, etc, etc
I think the best ROM is Black 2.5... no wait it's Custel... hmmmm maybe I'm wrong and want to vote for LVSW or even wait for Kyphur to re-surface (sorry I nearly forgot my favourite Dutty).....
Oops, Chinese alcohol taking over brain, but seriously, no one can really answer this. The people who think XXXX is the best rom do so because it is the best for them - works well with their radio, applications, service provider, Hermes variant etc etc.
The only way to find out is to try them AND try for a few days at least to get a real feel for the stability based on your own useage.
Personally I've now stuck with the LVSW rom for a while (on a UK vodafone VPA1605). I guess that you may have an X01HT because of the Chinese rom and I've just read that some other user had problems with this rom on his X01HT - so even there I can't recommend something which works so well for me.
BUT, have lots of fun trying them all - I did.

[ROM]1-20-10 WM 6.5.3 Build 23518 by egzthunder1

Hey fellas,
Since everything has been very quiet around here, I figured I would try to apply my newly acquired cooking skills to try to get something going for the BA. Now, cooking for the Vogue and cooking for the BA are two very different and separate monsters. You see?, there is a ton of info available for newer style kitchen, but very little info for older style (let alone on porting a rom). So much crap to go through (XIP, SYS, modules, files, aghh... my head hurts already). Long story short, after two weeks of persistent reading, trial and error, I have finally managed to get a good, stable, really fast port of 23518!!!!
Now, keep in mind that this is a hybrid xip (meaning I had a part of a 23001 rom, which was "injected" with stuff from 23518 to make it into that).
COME N' GET IT
Thanks to:

Bug List
1. ActiveSync doesn't sync.
2. No SMS through Outlook. I used SMS through PocketCM and it works fine (both send and receive).
3. Not really a bug but worth mentioning anyways:
Edit the registry
HKLM\controlPanel\Input: Erase the "Redirect" entry
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\DeviceBeta: Erase the whole folder - This will get rid of the "Beta" that will show up in the home screen. The shell has already been patched, but this have to be removed from the reg by hand.
I would include these changes as a cab, but I still need to learn how to do that
4. Wifi works ok, but there are no notification bubbles. Once Wifi sees a network, you will only see a blank square. I think this might point me in the right direction towards fixing the other bugs since I believe they are related.
One for the road...
omg that's so cooooooooooooooool
looking forward to see your ROM

WMP is in the rom. This is separate from d-two. In fact, I did this from scratch (with some help from swampy395)
BTW, I got SMS to work... only not through Outlook.
BTW what's the difference between build 23518 and d-two's 28008?
Good News,Finally egz will cook for BA,congratulations egz, i think it will be the best.

Hi Egz,
Although I'm not really using my BA much these days since I got my TP2, I wish you much good luck and success with this new ROM. When you release it, I'll certainly give it a try and critique . Its great to see more people getting their hands "dirty" digging into the innards and inventing/remodeling. I wish that I had the free time to indulge in this too. I can well imagine the thrill of having a new ROM successfully boot!!!! Again, Best of luck!!

Thanks a bunch, moti! The only couple of issues I have left are ActiveSync (same issue that xplode had a while back) and SMS from Outlook not doing squat. So far, I have read a few suggestions:
*Replace sync.dll's from the Shell (and replace tmail somewhere else) (trying out right now)
*Use a patched version of core.dll, which I believe is what xplode did on his.
I will keep you all posted...

d-two faced the same sync issues with 28008, and he has overcome them, maybe he is willing to help. and when you say sms with outlook, are you talking about the big outlook or pocket outlook, because it would be a major buzzkill, if sms wouldn't work on the blueangel, but no loss at all, if it concerned the PC. btw. if it is about the pc: how is that done in the first place. i installed office 2010 lately and haven't had much time to really look into it.

Hey Chef,
I had already pm ed d-two before I started building my rom asking for some guidance, but I never got an answer from him. Maybe if you ask him....
As far as the SMS, it is poutlook that does not want to compose SMS. I have been able to send sms via PocketCM, so if anything I can cook PocketCM .29 in the rom (which I personally like more than the pim app from MS anyways) and go about it that way.
Edit: Pm ed him again today. Hopefully, he will reply soon... I am fresh out of ideas and I have already asked in several different forums about it.
Thanks for this ROM
Hi egzthunder1,
I initially tried your posted ROM nk.nbf. it has many bugs. One thing though it has SIM Manager and SIM SVCS (STK??? i though no STK since WM5). Should you continue cooking this please spare this function.
Funny in this rom i could not make NEW SMS message.
Thanks and more power...

ROM Version: 1.66.707.1 any improvement?

Hi all,
appreciate your kind advice.. hard resetting to install ROM is always a chore and i wish to make sure there is reason to do so..
am on 1.48 stock now and should i change to stock 1.66?
the description of HTC leaves more ? for me..
any kind experts know of the improvement it brings?
i saw HTC release yet another SMS update.. Duh does the 1.66 require all those crazy updates?
hi experts do help to advise if the upgrade is worth it.. the pain of hardreset is terrible,.,
Think it depends on your expectations. If you read through the lots of 1.66-ROM-Threads around here, you can see that the big majority would suggest to upgrade because the performance went better. Beneath that also the HotFixes are implemented and you are so able to save a lot of disk space on your phone. I tried the WWE-version of the ROM and I really liked it - includes also several bug-fixes that are quite annoying with 1.48. e.g. the lock-bug. We don't have this ROM here in GER already and I can't wait to install our final release!

It's definitely better, and I've only seen a couple of minor gripes about it since it came out. I'd expect the forum to be full of complaints if it wasn't doing a decent job.
ok.. today shall be a hard reset day for me...
Cool, will prolly update my (mostly patched) 1.43 to 1.66 today aswell, thx for the infos de Wolfe & johncmolyneux
Yeah I really like the 1.66 WWE ROM. I went from the 1.48 WWE rom to 1.66 and haven't had any regrets! Performance is idd better, bluetooth problem for me, seems to be gone (It wouldnt go up from time to time), and no sms bug....yet :O
--edit
I only have it 3 full days installed, so maybe my perspective will change :x (i hope not!)
I would suggest looking if you have any problems with 1.48, if you don't then stay with it. I upgraded from 1.48 to 1.66 (admittedly my SMS always sent and i havent tried bluetooth at all yet) but 1.66 has an annoying bug with text messages where it selects the message you are replying to.
If you're replying to a message when the previous messages in that conversation are finished loading the screen will scroll to the message you're replying to meaning the the text entry box isn't visible on the screen any more. Just an annoyance which HTC apparently call a feature - it would be a feature if it were immediate but not when you're already typing. But it is annoying not critical to phone use.

i concur, how can that be a feature when i cant even see what I'm typing
Ive upgraded with 1.66 my HD2 is from the UK.
seems pretty stable for now, did revert the back up of my SMS and it is stable i'd say.
however, i can see the following on the field to enter the number when u select a new SMS or compose sms. it says "limited to 10 recipients" which i did not notice on 1.48 ROM. is this normal, does any one of you have it too..
cheers

That is normal mate. The restriction was already there before but it didn't advertise it. You can increase it to 50 with BsB Tweaks (for Christmas and New Year )
lol i like this christmas and ny !!
so all in all, the benefits should be more than cons.. versus 1.48

Definitely. I've only seen people complaining about 1 thing consistently, and it's just a new "feature". When you reply to a text, it automatically highlights the text that you're replying to, even if you'd already started typing. It's hardly the end of the world - you just open the keyboard again and you're back in the reply box.
Other than that, I've only seen 1-off issues, none of which are showstoppers.
It's worth it just for the silkiness aspect. It's smooth as anything now

Yes mate, but I've never had a problem installing it anyway. Maybe you should look for a different cab. I've heard of people having issues installing .Net 3.5 before now and it's always been resolved by finding a different cab.

This, I often flash whilst at work, and it takes longer to download a new ROM than to get my phone exactly I want it again.
I use PPCPimBackup for texts/contacts.
Yes, (I believe) the "limited to 10 recipients" is normal for SMS with the 1.66 Upgrade, AND we've seen it before.
On the 14 Jan 2010 - see "Update for HTC HD2 – New SMS Function Update [14.01.2010]" thread started by Irbperia - HTC issued an SMS Update which was shortly afterwards withdrawn - probably a hasty precursor to the 1.66 ROM Upgrade which followed. It also added the "limited to 10 recipients" to SMS.
Having had my own fair share of HD2 grief, I've been following this forum for a while now looking for answers and I think that thanks to HTC's hasty pre-Christmas release of the HD2 - before its ROM was really ready - we're all getting a little paranoid in thinking any little quirk might be yet another bug.
The 1.66 ROM Upgrade seems to have sorted out most issues and (for me at least) the phone was great even with its false start but now it's a real pleasure to use. Maybe we should all relax a little and enjoy what is still arguably the very best WinMo phone out there !!!
All power to you HTC ... (but I hope you're learning from your mistakes and Production please resist being bullied into another premature release by Marketing)

Upon restoring the my backup sense no longer works. It was lightly tweaked.
Just saying, there are potential problems. In the process of working out the problems ATM...
