Getting through to O2 and then speaking with someone who actually can help is rather like trying to obtain an audience with the Pope - the latter would probably be much easier!
Question - do I have to have O2 mobile web activated on my SIM by one of those 'ever so helpful' people at O2?
I have tried just about everything to connect to GPRS without a glimmer of success and am now searching my medicine cabinet for the answer.
I knew I was wrong in getting rid of my trusty Sagem MC920!
Best Regards
Ian G
Ian,
Yup, O2 need to activate it on their side before you can GPRS. Give them a buzz, I'm sure they will be as helpful to you as they were to me. It only took me a few weeks to get setup.
Regards
Keith Burke
Try e-mailing them. Often I phone thinking it will be quicker, but they are so difficult to get through to, e-mail is usually much easier and cheaper (50p per minute on theyr phone line ).
Surur
Ok, thanks for your help - It's very probably me being impatient!
Regards
Ian G
Are you with O2 online?
If not, I may be able to help. PM me your mobile no. and I’ll have it checked out for you.
No Andrew, I'm with BT
Thanks anyway!
I'm sure it's all down to my acute lack of patience - O2 say they will call me so I will wait - something I hate doing!
Regards
Ian G
PM Me your no. then. I work for O2 and can tell you in a couple of minutes whether or not your no. is GPRS enabled. I can probably enable it for you if it isn’t.
You’ve probably been speaking to some customer services person. Believe it or not, they are always incredibly busy.
Hey - I got GPRS!!
Many many thanks for your input Andy
Erm do you own O2???
Best Regards
Ian G
Heh heh! I wish!
Nope, I just work for them. I've been here long enough though to develop a weird sort of loyalty. If I see a customer in trouble, I race to the rescue!
My faith is restored
Good Man!
Certainly gave me faith in O2 - I can watch the match in peace now.
Thanks again Andy

Press release
In an unprecendented and bold move, O2 has licensed the process of providing upgrades for their XDA PDA-phones to 'XDA-developers', an independent group of developers working on the XDA. Starting today the XDA developer support link on Source O2 will point to the XDA-developer fora.
"When we started looking for a partner to outsource this to, we quickly discovered most of the real tech-support was already being handled by XDA-developers, so they were the logical choice, really. And our own support for developers just could not match theirs. The XDA-developers have also been instrumental in achieving cultural change here at O2. For instance: they've helped us realise we would be better off in the long run if we upgrade all remaining 32 MB units to 64MB and if we stopped selling SIMlocked units.", says H. Uphisas, product manager for XDA at O2 Europe.
"It's challenging to now have access to all the knowledge, and to open it up to the world. Having full hardware documentation, and being able to create our own ROM upgrades has long been a goal here at XDA-developers. This partnership will allow O2 and the XDA customers to fully benefit from our knowledge of the device and of what its users and software developers want. O2 has done a great job of supplying upgrades and support in the past, but we feel confident that we can make further improvements.", says Peter Poelman, spokesperson for the XDA-developers.

But really: why couldn't some provider just "open it all up"? They'd sell more units and more call-minutes, and they'd have less work. Right?

More power to all of the developers!
I agree what is happening in XDA-developers pages and forums is more important and even more proffesional than any company. My respect to every member of this family as you have givin us the chance to improve and fix the mistakes by the people who call themself PROs ...

Forgive me for being naive, but I wonder if the o2 Developers WOULD actually look favourably on some tie up with the guys and gals here? (if it hasn't been tried before).
I'm sure o2 suits would have a fit, but there could be room for 'informal' dialogue.
Please let me know if I'm away in La-La land...

I thought you people would never ask...
I don't know what your role in O2 is, but I'll assume you're serious about this. By all means, let's have some serious discussion between O2 and some senior XDA-developers. At the very least, I can see many ways of working together which would help optimise the flow of information between O2 and the users.
About the suits: I really think we can come up with ways in which any proposed cooperation would actually end up making more money for O2 and provide better support for the users.
Please provide me (either personally through E-mail, or publically here) with what you feel would need to happen next. Maybe we should create a new forum, in which we provide access to womever for O2 would need to be at the 'table', plus some reasonable XDA-developer delegation.
I was personally thinking of about 5-10 people that all regularly post here and that seem to have an opinion or interest in making stuff better. Shall I propose a list for this delegation in the next few days ?
AAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH! - (sound of man rushing to stem confusion....)
>>I don't know what your role in O2<< - No, no - I'm nothing to do with o2 apart from donating them hard earned cash every so often.
I'm the kind of guy who specialises in 'sensible compromise' through my job, so was applying that logic to here as well.
But seriously folks... as you lot here obviously have a lot to offer the disgreacefully under resourced o2 dev dept, have you actually tried picking up the phone / sending a discreet email offering some tie-up? Not too sure what the financials would be, but a free XDA every other month must be a possible.
Lol, they should do this now .

I'm terribly sorry, but it all went ****ing **** with my hoster today.
they just did shut down the site, coz they don't like Mambo.
they said, that the scripts from mambo are buggy, improperly coded and causing server problems.
Mainly the DOCman component.
So first they changed permissions on Download directory to make it inaccessible and then turned the site off...
thanx god, i've got this phpBB already set up with mambo conversion scripts. They then agreed to use phpNuke and phpBB as "approved" software for their servers.
nothing from the dl section is lost though..
i'll do my best to bring all back ASAP.
meanwhile, please use the forum only....

Hey Buzz, I don't want to publicize my hosting company, but if you are interested they offer great service for a very low ($60 dollars including MySQL DB) annual fee. They support Mambo which is the one I've been using very successfully on my high traffic portal and without problems. (They support and even encurage it's use).
Let me know if you need the info.
By the way, my previous portal was under PHPNuke and got hacked way too often even with all security patches installed! So be aware!

Hi guys ive currently got a site, which is all about PSP's, i've kinda got bored with that subject now. I'd like to start a site specifically about the xda EXEC, but i need some help.
Also just wondered if anyone would like to give me a hand and they would be publicised in doing so. If interested email me at d.raspe at btinternet.com OR god at day66.com
(obviously replace the "at" with "@")
Cheers Damien
Damien - what's your psp site? I've just bought one from ebay, so hopefully I can start figuring out dax and ziso and all of that stuff. Who knows, I might even do some programming on it... one day.
Does the world need another Universal website?
What would be your "angle"?
V
RE: Site proposal
Well, i started off with psp's a while ago, set up a site Hxxp://www.day66.com but never really got around to finish it, and the lack of knowledge of .php held me back a bit!
I'd like to set-up this site, because it will be nice to have a site, just for the exec, pro, universal. So people who have these phones can come to one place and download programs etc.
What do you think?
Did you say you had just brought a PSP?
Damien
Yeah, just bought a psp off ebay, should arrive tomorrow. If it doesn't come with a free Nigerian Scammer in the box, I'm going to be downgrading and hacking this time tomorrow... Mrs Vijay555's red hot poker willing (I haven't broken the news to her about the PSP. Let's not mention the 2gb Memory card. And the Bluetooth headphones for my Mio...)
If you've got any useful tips, feel free to PM me
Regarding the exec - well, hopefully the Wiki here is a good way to tie information together. I've got no problems with every member setting up his own website, but I think it just becomes a duplication of efforts, which is why I'm here all the time! My own website lies neglected, withering away like the now useless legs of my God Emporer body. But my new website will hopefully be a bit sexier

Hi there, I have been a member for a while now but never posted before!
I have followed many of the hints, tips and suggestions on this forum and have had a great time with my O2 XDA mini s but now find myself needing more help !
In fixing my mini s stylus issue I voided the warranty. A couple of weeks ago a colleague managed to knock a screwdriver into the empty battery compartment. I was swapping the sim card but got called away. The screwdriver pierced the sticker giving the IMEI number and damaged the electrical component under it. The component is labelled 3R3.
After calming down and restarting the mini s, all was ok apart from the backlight which would not work at all. I took my phone to a local phone repair shop who had it for a week then said they could not fix it as it needs a new mainboard - typical !
I have spoken with O2 who will charge me £17.50 to send my phone off to a company called A Novo who (I was told) will then send it back unrepaired as the warranty is voided. Totally pointless.
Does anyone know where I might be able to get my mini s repaired or has anyone got a broken mini s with a good mainboard they are willing to sell me ?
thanks
If you send it to Anovo they can quote you for a non warranty repair, this way you will know whether its worth while paying for the repair. BTW Anove are based in Norwich. I believe there is a link form the o2 xda web site that has a contact number.
Hope that helps
LB
LB,
thanks for the reply.
I have had a hunt through the o2 XDA site but cannot seem to find any reference to Anove. I have even googled them and not found anything like.

These people seem ok.
I did not actually need to use them in the end so I can't tell you what they are like, but give them a try.
They are authorised repairers for HTC models.
If you contact them and explain the fault, they will give you a quote before they carry out the work.

Apex laptops are overpriced and most definatley NOT HTC authorised - most of their 'parts' come salvaged from broken units. Check their website. Then go elsewhere...!

Depending on where you are in Yorkshire, you could take your device to Bulmers second hand shop in York on a wednesday or saturday and ask for 'Dave' - big guy with glasses. He does board level repairs on xda's but is usually quite busy.

Apex laptops do not use parts from broken pda's. They come direct from factory. I bought a new XDA II case and it is perfect!
i would highly recomend them.
they are not overpriced either. they say if you find a price cheaper elsewhere they will beat that!

Ok, then why do they have Qtek 2020 boards listed - if they came direct from HTC they would have no reseller rom flashed to them. Trust me, I know. They alos charge £295 for this board! MORE THAN A COMPLETE DEVICE.
They also list the housing at £25 and the front bezel at £30, battery cover at £15 and aeriel cover at £15 = £85.
I sell the complete housings on ebay for the himalayas / alpine for £25....and they are the entire housing inc the battery cover!
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130015502288
So you don't think that much of a massive markup is overpricing? £85 from them or £25 from me. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm............
So, I state again, they are OVERPRICED.

Hi folks,
Allow me to intoduce myself.
I am the Service Manager for a UK based laptop and PDA repair company, Apex Laptops. With regards to the PDA repair side of our company, we specialise in mainly iPAQ PDA's but are finding a large number of people wanting HTC repairs.
We have tried many sources to obtain parts, the most unhelpful being 02's actual XDA repair center, ANOVA.
We are trying to find a company or people who would like to give / sell their broken / unwanted HTC's to us. Working or not, we do not mind.
If you know or have any information which may be of use to us, we will certainly be most grateful.
Thanks for your time and hopefully look forward to speaking to you soon.

I tried Apex Laptops with no success. I emailed them with the details and received an email back saying someone would be in touch soon. Several days later I received another email asking for a little more detail. I sent the reply and have heard nothing since. I even emailed them with prompt for my estimate! Just nothing from them.

LMAO!
Obviously making no comment about a specific company here, but as a general statment...
Should a person, say, a Service Mananger, for a company visit a forum, not disclose that they work for said company, while making comments about them, you would think "hey, that's immoral". You could well be right.
Should that person LIE about the company, say for example, making a false claim that they are a customer of said company and give glowing FALSE praise, you'd probably be inclined to wonder about just what kind of a business it is. You'd be right to think that. That hypothetical situation would be incredibly shady, outright immoral, and quite possibly an illegal business practise.
A little flag should also be waving in your head saying "hey why does this hypothetical person need to pretend to be a satisfied customer? surely if they are an honest and trustworthy company they will have actual satisfied customers, and have no need to lie and decieve."
Shold said manager at the company in one thread be calling for people to send them broken phone parts for use as spare parts, yet in another vigourously (while lying and pretending to be a customer!!!) deny that they use parts from broken phones... you'd just be thinking "WTF! Why aren't these people being invesigated by the local coppers?" That'd be a fair question.
In this hypothetical situation, I would advise people to seek the advice of the local trading standards or police, to determin the legality and correctness of this deciet.
Of couse, as I've stated, this is all hypothetical and unrelated to this thread. No idea why I've posted it here, sorry. We have NO such immoral persons falsely claiming to be satisfied customers.
I apologige profusely for this post that is unrelated to the thread and the posted comments within.
b19dmj, does your part looks like attached? Part size is about 3*3 mm.
Hi, yes it looks like that but has 3R3 stamped on it.

Gentlemen,
here is the date and location for our next X01HT meeting.
As suggested by Andrew Shuttleworth, we decided on the 9th of January at 7pm.
As location we settled on the PINKCOW in Shibuya, details can be found here http://www.thepinkcow.com
i typed this on the go and might edit it on my PC later.
We are happy for anyone who appreciates this phone, to come and share your thoughts, suggestions and concerns. The meeting will be held in a relaxed atmosphere and of course we talk English.
I suggest for anyone who has problems with the phone or Softbank (seems to be a few, including me) to participate and hopefully find or give some answers that might help others.
Hi there,
I'll be there. On time, this time. Hopefully.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
here is my daily "bump"
Still alot of time...
Hm. live very close by, I hope I will be able to make it, too.
Having bought my X01HT just yesterday, it's my first ever Windows Mobile device so I feel a bit like a fish out of water. So far I've got it in English, installed google maps and skype and set up a complicated e-mail forwarding network involving gmail to get spam-free mail to the phone, but that's about it.
I want to get some kind of push e-mail at some point, now to start scouring handango for software. I hope to get a bunch of good recommendations from you guys who've been using the thing a while longer than me!

So i want to make a list of the people who can make it that day.
So to all of you guys, please, if you think you most likely be able to show up, PM me or quick post in here.
Unfortunately, I cannot come, again! I will need to stay in hospital for that day...

Happy New Year, People!!!
I am finally back in Tokyo after spending "the days" snowboarding in Hokkaido and O-Shogatsu at my In-Law`s house.
Too bad my doc doesnt allow me to have a drink.
Anyway, this post got a little lost and confused with another.
So either way, i hope i can fix it somewhat.
So we will hold the meeting in Shibuya at ThePinkCow

I just pinged a few Japanese Windows Mobile geek friends and 3 of them should be coming along including:

Should be a great meeting!

Tokyo Jan 2006 Meeting Report
We had a great this evening. 4 of the top Japanese Windows Mobile experts came along so there was no shortage of expertise. One member also partly managed to join remotely thanks to MSN and a projector. I'm going to be looking at options for setting up some sort of video cast and/or a Skype or MSN chat room next time. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.
Everyone seemed very happy with the venue, but as the 13th is booked next month I'd like to propose moving the Feb. event a week forward to the 6th. How does that sound? The guys from http://www.htc-fan.jp/ said they will announce the event so perhaps we can expect 20-30 people.
It's great to have excitement and energy re. Windows Mobile smart phones in Japan ;-)
