Hi ,
I'm planning to buy a WiFi SDIO card ... And I wounder whether I need to ave an access point or not to connect to my laptop (which already has a WiFi interface)..
This is possible if you use ad-hoc instead of infrastructure configuration.
But since I don't have a Wifi card in my MDA II, I can't test it (I use BT instead).
As far as i know, at least with Sandisk wifi SD card you won't be able to connect in ad-hoc. I've tried it and couldn't get it working, just in infrastructure mode through an access point. If anyone else knows how to do it please tell us how.
I have connected my XDAII to my laptop in ad-hoc mode.
laptop has a 802.11b pcmcia card set in windows to ad hoc mode
sandisk is set in network card settings on ppc to ad-hoc mode only.
hi, any suggestion which sdio wi-fi card that will best work with the xda mini? i tried to search the web but no particular sdio was mentioned that is compatible with the mini. also, a linksys router is being used at the office.
1) does it matter or any sdio will work provided that i have the drivers installed on my mini?
2) am i correct that if ever i will connect to any hotspots or even at our office (using wi-fi), i will not be charged by my carrier for the connection?
any help would be highly appreciated. i just dont want to end up spending money on SDIO card and later on will not work with my mini. thanks very much!

1) all with available drivers should work. I use the SanDisk Wifi with 256 MB Memory without problems
2) I think this depens on your settings. Normally you're right, but if you are doing some things with your connection profiles you can get a probelm, that you're gprs connection would be used....

I'm using a Sandisk SD Wifi Card with my mini. Sometimes when i'm in a wifi hotspot with my wifi card inserted, when i turn on my browser and start surfing the gprs will still try to connect even though I have a good wifi signal.
Has anyone experienced this? Does anyone know how to prevent the gprs from activating when ïn a wifi hotspot?
I have heard someone having a similar problem with the xda 2s but not on the magician, anyway can you confirm that the network card settings for the sandisk card allow for connection to the internet and not work.
start -> settings -> connection -> network cards -> select network adapters -> ensure sandisk connects to the internet.

yea i had that problem i had to even set it back to 'work' sometimes. seems ok now though. i dont know why you have to even choose one, shouldnt need to!
i finally installed my SanDisk WiFi 256 card and although it picked up my network perfectly, it for the life of me wouldnt connect via WiFi, kept using GPRS.
But much to my surprise, i tried it a few days later and it connects fine first time to the WiFi now!

I read about it happening to the xdaIIs in the blue angel threads, but I wasn't sure if it was the same for the magician. Anyway, I'll try this next time I get to a hotspot and will let you know how it goes. Many thanks!

btw, for some reason, I haven't had any problems surfing with wifi at all when I'm in Airborne Access (a Philippine wifi provider) hotspots.
Please Help!!!! How do I get Wifi on a Sitronics SDC-106 Cynthia850 cell phone? Can I use the network cards NE2000 Compatible Ethernet Driver or AR6001 WLAN SDIO card to access Wifi? What are the IP adrresses associated with those cards? Thanks for your help
I have a unique tethering question. I'm running RotoHammer's JMIv2 and it provides native support for tethering (Wireless + Network -> Mobile AP).
However, I want to tether another device to the GT in infrastructure mode, without a SIM card in the device. Is this possible?
(Explanation: I am traveling internationally and will not have a SIM card in the slot. I want to connect my Eye-Fi SDHC Memory Card to the GT so I can transfer photos over WiFi. I cannot turn on tethering on the GT unless I have a SIM card with data access. I tried putting an expired SIM card in but to no avail. I also tried installing WiFi-Tether but the SDHC card will not connect to an ad-hoc network, unless I get the Pro version of the SDHC card.)
