Landscape / Portrait modes on the fly - MDA, XDA, 1010 Software Upgrading

Has anyone cooked a ROM with WM2003 that does portrait or landscape modes on the fly? How is it working? Is it smooth and easy to switch?
It is one of the advertised features of the new OS but I haven't heard of or read about anyone using it. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

2003SE is not out yet
and roms have to be made for a device before you can cook it
you cant just take a pure MS rom not that there are such roms for anything but preview and for the pda makers to base their rom on
problem with 2003SE is that applications which are not made to support the rotation dont work which mean many many many freeware applications
so needless to say i'm in no hurry to change
people say October is when the 2003SE will be released for the xda devices

Rudegar
Thanks for your input. I really want MS Excel and IE available in Landscape mode. Since these are both MS programs, I am hoping their WM2003SE will work on these programs?

Landscape
Landscape Mode is already here... Not on the fly or even fully supported by alot of software. I did test one method I had found
http://www.nyditot.com/
It worked great for all of the microsoft stuff... they have obviously been prepared for a while. the only quirky thing if you stick to just the microsoft stuff is the today screen doesn't stretch to the side. everything else works.(except the phone)
Here is some more information on it as well

screen rotation software please

Does any one know where I can get the software to switch views on the xda2 screen between portrait & landscape formats ? When I am trying to view spread sheets it becomes extreemly frustraiting having to scroll accross every time I want to view things !!! :x
hey mate,
when i was still using my xda1 i tried out 2 kinds of software; ny-something (forgot the name) and another one called jslandscape. the ny works better but i never got the correct settins to make the appearance right (based on resolution). and the worse part is to uninstall the sucker you have to do a hard reset. now that i'm using an xda2 i haven't heard of anyone successfully using either of the 2 softwares i mentioned; a friend of mine had to do a hardreset after trying it out on his unit. my 2 cents worth is that be VERY careful when you decide to try out orientation software; make sure you back up your data well.
cheers

Have a look at http://www.nyditot.com/
I never testesed it but it seems very good (pocketpc award 2003)
bye

I use nyditot quite a lot, at 480x360 landscape for terminal services and web browsing, and it works perfectly. Note that there were issues with PC2003 until recently, so make sure you get the latest version.
I beleive you can uninstall it without a hard reset. However, you need to do a soft reset between screen changes which can be a bit irritating.
Also, the SIP is scaled too, so can be a bit fiddly to use at finer resolutions, although I rather like it tiny.
I just wish PPC devices would start to use, and properly support, the new 640x480 screens that are becoming standard on Palm5 devices.
I also use the nyditot software. I first started using it when I had an iPAQ but since it works with WM2003 is was able to migrate to my XDA II

Medical Apps....still waiting

Hi Guys,
This post is a little overdue in that I lost my password to login here, but have been reading the forum religiously daily.
Anyways, after waiting and waiting, I still feel like the fool with the new device that can't run one single Medical app.
I'm talking about Skyscape and the like.
None of the WM2003 Apps are upward compatible.
Styletap doesn't install the .pdbs of my older Apps.
Essentially I saw one post earlier touting Epocrates may work, but thats just one app.
So at times, I miss my 6315 Ipaq for this functionality, but am stalling on downgrading to using 2 PDAs for this purpose.
Anyone care to share misery some company on this topic,
OR
have any insight into a possible solution?
Thanks
hi
though some of the apps dont run (not wm5 compatible) but i have 4 products off skyscape that work perfectly... these are 5mcc 2006, oxford handbook of emergency medicine, oxford handbook of acute medicine , and ferri clinical advisor...
ive also tried the following that work on universal:
1)abc's lab application
2)cecil
3)harrison
4)washington manual 31
5)davis drugs

What is your definition of "it works"? Any slow downs? How about when switching from lanscape to portrait or vice versa? Any problems with screen refreshing on the Universal?
I guess those guys didnt email anyone.
I just checked sometime back and 90% of their products are NOW WM5 compatible. Go and get them
im very interested in medical apps for my pda, please can you guys let me know how they run on the exec. I had some skyscape apps on my ipaq 4150 and it took quite a while to load, im thinkin it would take even longer on the exec.
They are fast and support both landscape and portrait mode. Pretty good in my opinions.
How come skyscape site only list their programs to be compatible with Pocket PC 2003 and not Windows Mobile 5? This is what maybe causing hesitation on our part, at least now we know skyscape programs work even though they did not specify full Windows Mobile 5 support.
Frank Shanns Drug Doses works in both landscape and portrait.
www.drugdoses.net
I think maybe skyscape has updated their site recently, since it seems they are now very specific about which apps are WM5 compatible.
Universaldoc, could you say which apps you have working well on your device?
Hi Shiva,
Most of them are working. When you click on the title, it will show you a list of device requirements in which it will now state WM 5 also. 99% of the apps have been upgraded to WM 5 now.
I mainly use 5mcc and Stedmans They both work very well.
skyscape success
I took the plunge and installed 5 min CC, DrDrugs, and the Medical Letter Drug interactions programs. All seem to work just fine.
One thing that might be disconcerting to some is that in the install routine, if you are installing to storage card, you get a message that install was NOT successful. But you just find the cab files that were successfully copied over, run them, and no problem.
Now my external brain is healthier again.
In Australia
If anyone is in Australia and use MIMS (the local pharmacy information)- then you're out of luck.
Any iSilo stuff works as iSilo itself works
Why would anyone need iSilo when vast databases like Skyscape are available?
Anyone tried ER Suite by Medical Wizards yet?
http://www.medicalwizards.com/client/productdesc.aspx?productid=47
Update: I tried their apps 4 months ago. Their apps worked on the Universal, but it is not WM5 compatible yet. I would not recommend their software for the Universal at the moment.
DrugDoses has been updated
Hi!
Just to let you know that DrugDoses, a PDA version of Frank Shann's Drug Database, has just been updated. I really like its new features, such as the medical formulas and scores (Apgar, Glasgow Coma Scale, QTc, FeNa, etc).

Database recommendation??

Is there any database you can recommend? It should habe a desktop client.

I don't know if this will fill all your requirements by it's free and very, very good.

Looks very promising..!! Thank you!! I'll give it a try..!!

Try SprintDB www.kaione.com
I use it and it is brilliant, its like having full blown Microsoft Access on the ocket PC, Macros. modules, forms, queries, the works
But Sprint DB hasn't been developed for a long time.. as I see so far.. Does it work good on a WM5? Also in landscape mode and so on..
Alex
if its for commercial use what about Oracle Lite with Mobile Server.

The latest I heard from Kaione was that they were working on a WM5 version, but I've been using even the existing version with no problems since I got the Universal. It's fine in landscape mode as that was developed for WM2003SE compatibility.
Depending on what you actually want to do, SQLCE is really good. We use it at work, but you'd need to do some programming to use it!
Unfortunately I am not so good in programming databases. Would be nice if I could import some XLS or TXT lists and could design a nice form for the device for viewing..
SprintDB IS being actively developed, just before christmas I became a beta tester for their version 3 of sprintDB.
It works perfectly on WM5 and in landscape. It is a fab product, much easier and better features than all of the others I have tried.

Dasher - clever keyboard alternative

Hi all,
I saw Dasher mentioned on the Christmas Lectures this year and noticed there is a version which runs on Windows Mobile. It's a very smart keyboard that would be a great tool on the Touch Diamond if it could be made into a SIP (perhaps even enabling the accelerometer to control it would work well?)
If you've not heard of it. check it out at http://www.inference.phy.cam.ac.uk/dasher/ - there's an online Java based version to play with on there.
The developer of the Pocket PC version mentions releasing a SIP version but i've no idea when that was posted, so if any of the talented coders on here were able to get it running I reckon it'd be a really good alternative to the standard keyboards.

Still, the pocket PC version works very well... and you can always cut'n'paste.
But, yes, a SIP version wold be pretty cool, if a little expensive on screen real estate!

Save BeyondPod!

The developer of BeyondPod - possibly one of the best podcatcher/RSS readers available - has decided to focus more on the Android platform and less on WinMo. As anyone who has tried to use BeyondPod on any of the 6.5 builds knows, there are a number of issues with the way it renders feeds (missing scroll bars, no text size control, no finger scrolling, etc). Basically the program needs to be updated to support the new version of IE in 6.5.
This would also be an oppurtunity for anyone interested in the future of BeyondPod on WinMo to take over its development. The project is open source, and there are a number of possible improvements that could make this app even better (feed search, apptodate support, homescreen plugin, etc). The dev would be more than happy to have the help.

Anyone interested in tackling this project? Or is there an even better alternative out there for those of us who want to get our podcast on?
No one cares? Or maybe I'm one of the few that do?
Guess I need to teach myself some programming skills . . .
Im using BeyondPod, great podcast software!

You might be using it now, but won't be for long . . . if you upgrade to WM6.5 or many cooked ROMs of WM6.1. That's the point of this thread.

Can we try to petition or email them?
At least write an app for wm 6.5.
Than that will be ok.

Dude. Read the first post carefully. And follow the links.
I liked beyondpod but switched to speeedreader due to google reader sync. they should actually talk with each other, both have great features, combined it would be a killer app..

Speedreader is no comparison to beyondpod. Beyondpod is the best software i've found by far for managing audio podcasts, multiple auto downloads, intuitive interface and integrated player with great playback and bookmarking features. I'm surprised more people are not aware of this awesome software and if anything out there is close or better I would like to know. I would almost abandon 6.5 just for Beyondpod, but 6.1 scrolling is so terrible that i cant do it. Beyondpod is one piece of software that would actually be worth paying for if it weren't already offered for free.

SECOND that ... i would do it but I am no coder ... BOunty perhaps? or how can we get it done ?
The name defines, BEYONDPOD.
So yeah, this app is good.
Runs quite well on wm6,5, have to use the Dpad to scroll up and down though.
Able to download, listen and play audio and video and see podcast listing in wm 6.5

Was there an update? I have had at least 15 6.5 roms flashed and the content view in beyondpod was not working therefore rendering it useless for downloading. Sometimes you could see content view the first time you brought it up, but it would not refresh if you scrolled and would be blank the next time.
I would be up to adding to a bounty if necessary

Oh, I dont notice this issue, as what you mentioned work perfectly fine, (Surprisingly) on my device.
I will check out and see how it goes.
Cheers.
Hi All,
jeremy89632 is right, if you just use your Dpad then the error doesn't occur. Another option I have found is that if you use the update and download option then that works as well.
I'm a .NET programmer and I think this is written in .NET. Let me take a peek at the source code for a few days and then I'll let you know if it is something I might want to tackle. I do a TON of development work in .NET but nothing on the mobile platform yet - this might be interesting. Plus, I've been looking for a good RSS/podcast reader myself!
/Chimp (Tom)
Tom, Def check it out it rocks for audio podcasts.
I seem to have found a temp workaround, which tells me a solution cannot be far off. When I go into content view and cannot see the content or it is messed up. I just switch my touch pro to landsacpe and the view is fine abd I can use the dpad to scroll. I will ususally just shift right back to landscape and the view remains perfect but dpad wont scroll until I first touch the screen, then it will dpad scroll with no problem. I can click and download feeds with no problem. I reduced the large text size in beyondpod settings. All the podcasts manage and playback fine but the volume is much lower than normal hard to hear even with mediaplayer and system volume at max. Volume in my other apps and mediaplayer is very loud as normal.
It it more complex than I thought. Also, is this only for a SmartPhone? Or is also for a WM Professional device? When I finally got it loaded into VS2008 it only showed a SmartPhone device.
I'll keep playing with it.
Chimp (Tom)
Definitely PPC touchscreens. On 6.1 it was pretty flawless and fairly finger friendly.
Hmm... It is definately showing up as a Smartphone only when I load it. I'll have to figure out how to switch it over to a PPC device (and also support a SmartPhone).
Well, as this app is for the touchscreen users, it is easier to squash bugs for users rather than to create a smartphone version and cause issues.

I downloaded the code, as well... I got it to successfully compile and run in the WM6.5 Pro emulator (with the stated problems). You need to change the target platform to WM 6 Pro.
Like you said, the code is really complex, but I kind of understand why, it's a great program, and I've missed it since I finally got 6.5 on my i910...
I don't have a lot of spare time, but I'll try to tackle this thing...
