ActiveSync forgets it's sync'ed favourites before; gives err - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

Every time I plug my XDA2 into the cradle at the moment, I get an ActiveSync error dialog saying:
"
The following information type on your mobile device has items that have not been syncronised with this computer before.
Information type: Favourites
"
Then there are three radio buttons:
"
- Combine the items on my device with the items on this computer
- Replace the items on my device with the items on this computer
- Do not synchronize this information type at this time.
"
It doesn't matter which option I choose - the same message comes right back next time. I've tried removing the favourites from the list of items to be sync'ed, and the dialog doesn't appear any more, but then my favourites don't get sync'ed. :? When I re-add the favourites to the list, the error dialog comes back.
I can't get to the Microsoft site to look at the ActiveSync troubleshooters at the moment, so if anyone has any quick solutions or suggestions for me they'd be gratefully received.
Thanks in advance.

Can anyone suggest anything?

How to Stop ActiveSync from starting automatically

Hi all,
I've been monitoring my memory usage to find out which application is using the most memory and which one is leaking. However, accidentallty, I found out that ActiveSync keep on starting itself and run in the background, taking about 300-400K.
I noticed this when I was trying to figured out why my memory seems to decrease when nothing is running (I didn't start any application). However, if I set the MEssaging application to check email every 15 minutes, ActiveSync seems to start itself every 15-30 minutes. This is shown in the "Running" program tab in the "Memory" applet (Control Panel).
I'll kill the ActiveSync process, then later on it'll come back again.
Does anyone know why is this? It's taking up my previous memory...

* ACTIVESYNC 4.0 TURNS ON AUTOMATICALLY (DRAINS BATTERY): *
***********************************************************
1) Start up AS on your PDA.
2) Tap the menu tab/soft key and tap "Add Server Source"
3) Configure a server source with a dummy IP address, user id,
password and domain name; these do not have to be real.
4) Once configured you should have another sync source show up
on your main AS screen...continue on.
5) Tap the menu soft key again and you should see that the
sync schedule option is no longer greyed out.
6) Change your schedule from a timed automatic start of AS to
manual under both fields
7) If you try to sync now, AS will try to contact your imaginary
exchange server and that will take forever until it times out,
so you can now delete the exchange server from your list of
sync sources. Your changes to the sync schedule will remain and
will survive soft resets too.
Hi Dodger,
Thanks for your help! I am trying out your solution now and waiting (of course) for the SYnc to my "imaginary" Exchange Server to time out, since it takes ages to do so.
Just a quick question on Step 7 below:
"...so you can now delete the exchange server from your list of
sync sources. Your changes to the sync schedule will remain and
will survive soft resets too.
So you're saying that once I delete the Exhcange Server from my list, ActiveSync will no longer startup automatically but my regular Sync to AS4.1 on my desktop will stay the same?
Well,
I'm not sure about step 7. I've found these steps sometime on the Ineternet and don't know the author of it (forgot, sorry).
I never do step 7.
The procedure however works fine on my 2020 under WM2005.
I just deleted the Exchange Server from the List and so far ActiveSync hasn't started in my MDA yet. I'll keep monitoring and post if it start-up again.
Cheers!

Outlook/Contact sync - not all appear - any reason why?

Hi everyone!
Just had an upgrade to the Exec after having my Xda2i replaced by insurance.
I've put it into corporate mode, setup active 4.1 on my laptop, made backups of anything I needed off a borrowed Xda2i and sync'd all the notes/contacts info.
Installed and created a new partnership with the Exec and all seems ok - it does it's sync function. However, I notice that only about half of my contacts appear in the listing. Going through options I ensure 'Filter' is set to 'all contacts' and 'View by' is 'name'
checked the settings in Activesync and that all appears ok.
Still only half of the contacts appear.
To test, I make a change in Outlook 2003 on a contact that is showing up on the exec, save change and almost immediatley I see the change on the exec's screen. I then make a change in a contact that isn't appeating on the exec and it shows the sync icon working, makes the positive sound.
Still doesn't appear on screen.
Am I missing something stupid ? or is there a setting to 'display all' contacts?
Anyone know how to resolve?!
Cheers!
Dennis! West London UK!
Hi Dennis!!,
You check, if some of yr contacts in Outlokk appear in "Other" field..if Yes, then use the export/import function of Outlook 2003, edit in CSV file, import it back, and do the sync...
Update
I just downloaded and installed the latest ROM from the O2 Xda website. Installed no problem at all.
Just tried sync and the same occurs. Not all of my contacts 'show'
I noticed on the sync '83 items' in the contacts section. Sure enough a manual count of all my contacts shows '83' of em. The sync then says 'syncronised' so I assume all is OK. Doing the same test as before and the 'positive' beeps when updating a record in outlook still occur, leading me to beleive the record IS in the Exec, just that it isn't being displayed in my contacts screen/list/view. I count only '24' of my contacts showing on the Exec
I went through carefully on my outlook, changing each record to be included in a Personal or business catagory only, no difference (every change made the positive beeps after saving)
Any other ideas of why this occurs? I've been digging around to see if there's any 'hidden' option in display etc - no joy...
It's annoying, as I cant see my regular contacts that I need frequently...
Any pointers/fixes would be great!

Solution: To get ActiveSync Running Again

Getting ActiveSync running again. (Revised)
(Applies to situations where Active Sync fails to connect following the use of third party applications that clear the notifications queue but may include situations where AS does not connect through corrupt or missing notification files)
Using applications such as Scarybear, Memmaid, Pocket Mechanic and Sktools to clear the notifications queue is often a necessity to solve problems with alarms (either not going off or not cancelling etc.)
However, the file repllog, exe will show up using these applications and should NOT be deleted unless it is duplicated (exact duplicate, there may be 4 or 5 repllog files 2 of which are essential and may look like duplicates but are not). This is because these files notify the device that a USB cable has been connected and readies the device for Syncing. ActiveSync will not load if repllog.exe is missing in the TWO forms listed below:
1
repllog.exe
AppRunAtRs232Detect
AND
2.
repllog.exe
AppRunAfterRndisFnDetected
Adapted for the following but probably applies to other windows mobile devices:
HTC TyTN / XDA trion / MDA Vario II / VPA Compact III / SPV M3100 / Dopod CHT 9000 / Dopod 838 Pro
Step 1
To Replace repllog.exe - AppRunAtRs232Detect
(i.e. to get Active Sync to detect when you plug in the USB cable)
(Steps written for Memmaid, but Sktools is just as good. To ‘add’ a notification in Sktools just go to notifications and tap/hold an existing entry in the top list and an option to add appears in box drop down box1 enter "Start if RS232 connection......" and then tap gray "..." box and navigate to the windows folder and tap repllog.exe, finally tap OK in bottom left corner.)
1) Open 'MemMaid and go to the Notification Queue tab
2) Tap Add
3) In the Add Notification - Program field, tap the '...' icon.
4) In the folder tree, find \windows\repllog.exe and tap it.
5) In Add Notification - Event', choose 'An RS232 connection was made'.
6) Tap the 'Add' icon.
7) Exit and long-press the on/off button until the warning appears and tap yes to turn off the device.
8) Long-press the on/off button to restart the device and Active Sync should work on connection of the USB cable.
Step 2
To Replace repllog.exe AppRunAfterRndisFnDetected
(i.e. to get Active Sync to open/connect to network on detection of the USB cable)
The second notification you need is repllog.exe AppRunAfterRndisFnDetected
Follow same procedure as above choosing the option in sktools or memmaid to start when a network is detected OR just use this little application that will make the entry for you:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/atta...6&d=1155128708
(to use this application save the file to your PC or Device. Put it on the storage card (using a PC card reader if necessary) and tap to run. (it is a PPC EXE file not to be run on PC) You will simply get a screen that has an OK button. Tap it and you are done. Restart your SKtools or Memmaid and the key should be there.
Check you now have both replllog notifications present. You may have other repllog.exe notifications listed but you MUST have the two named above. The sub names of the repllog entries may differ slightly from those given above. The above names are in an abbreviated form as they appear on an untouched device, but so long as you have one that mentions RS232 and one that mentions network or RNDIS you should be OK.
You may be able to run AS now or may need to restart device and or PC.
NB: I have run a full test of the procedures here to test whether replacing these files reactivates Activesync. I deliberately deleted all my notifications (a risky thing as we know) - Activesync refused to start as expected. Using the methods above I replaced the two repllog entries and confirmed their presence. Activesync is working again.

Hello!
Great explanation, thanks for the information.
Since a few months when I have this problem I've to reboot the ppc and/or the pc untill I discovered this app that reboots the activesync connection
http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/applications/resync.htm
I don't know if it do it in the same way than your post explains.
Greetings to all.
oh my god I LOVE YOU! i've spent almost the entire day trying to fix my herald and finally it now syncs!!! thank you so much!!!!
i guess this wont help my email sync problem to exchange will it? no, i thought not
i can sync contacts and calendar items wirelessly with exchange but not emails
EDIT:
I eventually fixed it by the software equivalent of the power cycle. i unticked Email, let it delete all sync'd emails (none) then ticked it again. it's always the easy fix isn't it - i was ploughing through detailed settings, reg keys etc

Deleted Notifications
Hi,
I use an HTC Charmer with WM5 on a Win XP system.
I deleted all my notifications the other day - I have no idea why I thought that was a good idea but at the time I did
I have not been able to sync since.
I am about to try the 'resync' tool - linked from the second post in the thread and will post again either way.
EDIT: Resync did not work for me either.
Will.
Mike,
Your fix worked a treat. Thank you again.

Good news
I think what I need to do is add the second part (i.e. adding the second Repllog notification) as a standard part of this fix or at least get folk to check which Repllog items are there and which are missing without assuming it's just the cable-connected one that's gone. It's been useful to have you as a test case!!
Mike
I have tidied up this thread and revised the 1st post to reflect feedack and perfect the solution. Apologies to those whose posts I edited so they still made sense with the changes I made! Thanks to all for feedback.

Google's always useful
Memmaid
http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=14279
SKtools
http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=14288
Please note though, that the above fix is designed for folk who have deleted their repllog entries - it may be useful in other situations where active sync fails, but it is not meant to solve other problems. Also if you have not installed much to your device it may be as easy to do a hard reset that will also replace the missing files.
Good Luck

Hi There
I am still having problems - ActiveSync doesnt seems to start - USB connection is not recognised by my VPA Compact III.
I have tried yous recommended steps..
I used SKTools (Notification Queue) to clear off the duplucates entries for repllog.exe ....
By mistake, all repllog.exe entries was removed, So, as you have suggested, I used Memmaid, to "Add" both entries.
Now under SKTooks - Notifications Queue , i see both enrties now:
Application Notify Type Event Status Event Type Arguments
---------- ----------- ------------- ----------- -----------
repllog.exe CNT_EVENT InActive RS232_DETECTED AppRunAtRs232Detect
repllog.exe CNT_EVENT InActive UNKNOWN AppRunAfterRndisFnDetected
But ActiveSync still not working - i cant use Internet Sharing as well.
When USB is plugged in, the AMBER (charge LED) lights up only for 1 sec and then turns off and , of course, AS wont work.
If i use infra-red connection, it syncs well!
pls help.
thanks.

Hi there
I'm not sure but those two entries seem odd to me - the InActive and UNKNOWN parts.
Could you try the following?:
1
In my above post there is a link to an application that you download and put on your SD card and tap to install - could you try it. When you run the app it does not appear to do much just ok it and it will close. That app installs AppRunAfterRndisFnDetected.
2.
Using Sktools go to the notifications queue.
In the upper window tap and hold on any entry and an option to "add" appears - select it. In the drop down box at the top scroll down until "Start if RS232 connection..." appears and select it.
In the next box "filename and arguments" tap the grey box with "..." This opens a directory listing - go to the windows directory and scroll untill you find repllog.exe and tap it.
Now tap the ok tab bottom left.
The two required entries should now be present.
Connect or reconnect your device to the PC and hopefully a connection will be established.
Post back with problems.
Mike
Hello Mike. Thamks for your reply.
By the way, I tried your suggestions to create back (add) both the Notifications entry.
I deleted off both repllog.exe entries shown in my Notification Queue (shown using SKtools).
Before I proceeded, SKtools show no entries with repllog.exe.
For the first one, I use "add" function on the MemMaid - Notification Queue Tab.
I checked the notifications outcome, using SKtools.
The result, show below:
Application Notify Type Event Status Event Type Arguments
---------- ----------- ------------- ----------- -----------
repllog.exe CNT_EVENT InActive RS232_DETECTED AppRunAtRs232Detect
Then I used the small script "FixASRunAt.exe" copied to the SDCard, and executed it.
As expected, the Notification Queue in SKtools shown the 2nd entry being added as below. (take note - Event Type its also shown as unknown).
Application Notify Type Event Status Event Type Arguments
---------- ----------- ------------- ----------- -----------
repllog.exe CNT_EVENT InActive UNKNOWN AppRunAfterRndisFnDetected
Then I tried Activesync/USB Connect - still wont work!
How to manually add the repllog.exe .... .... AppRunAfterRndisFnDetected
instead of using the small script....
On MemMaid, "Add" notification, on what "event"
What else could cause this problem?
thanks.

Mmmm.. When adding the AppRunAfterRndisFnDetected using Sktools it would be "Start when a network has been connected" - I'm not sure about Memmaid.
The script works well on mine so I think you have more wrong than just the missing repllog entries.
What happens if you connect to the PC and start repllog manually by tapping it in the windows directory?
Mike
don't know wether this is relevant, but it might be to those for whom this fix is not working. I have manged to break my activesync a few times now purely by switching between internet sharing and syncing. An activesynce re-install/repair always sorts me out.

That will work when there is a problem with the PC end of active sync.
This fix is purely to replace essential repllog files on the Hermes.
So the fix outlined here would not fix a broken PC installation of Active sync and your re-installation of Activesync would not fix missing repllog files.
Mike

A little more help pse as I'm in the same boat
Mike,
I went mad with memmaid (a little knowledge is dangerous!)
OK, I followed your excellent instructions and used Memaid to add the first ...
RS232_DETECTED "AppRunAtRs232Detect"
I cannot however find an event to add the second one. There appears to be no "AppRunAfterRndisFnDetected" in the drop down list.
Maybe I'm dumb but I assume I select Add and select "repllog.exe" a second time and then it should be in the pull down box.
I can only see.....
Run at time
A PC card device changed
A full device Data restore completed
An RS232 connection was made
Data Synchronisation finished
The system time changed
The time zone changed
The device woke up
Any help greatly appreciated as I am off on holiday at the weekend and want to get things synched up before then

Got That Synching Feeling!

New kid on the block here so I hope someone out there can help me.
Recently got O2 Mini sd Wizard and really pleased with it.
Adding info. to the phone and synching with my pc OK.
I have just lost about 2/3 of my contacts - I don't know how.
But now when I try to synch with my pc I get an error message that reads:
'support code 800703fa' and synching does not complete.
I have tried soft reset but nothing changes.
When I try a hard reset, the phone behaves as though I have just done a soft reset and still nothing changes.
Anyone have any suggestions? (Polite ones please!!!)
+1 for title.
I would just go into ActiveSync on your phone and delete all of the accounts (click on Menu > Options, highlight the computer nickname and click Delete), then delete the sync folder on your computer, and create the account anew.
After creating it, go into your phone's Activesync again and click on Menu > Options again. From here you can configure the settings for each thing you want to sync, and can turn items on or off. For example, since my phone contact list is WAY more important to me, and I don't want my personal contacts ending up on my work computer (where I usually sync), I do not sync them at all. However, I always push Notes and Tasks from the phone to my computer, since I'm usually creating those while away from my desk. Each item can be set differently. I usually let Files sync in both directions, so I can nab new .cab files when I need to.
BTW, a Google search for "support code 800703fa" could be very enlightening, or very tedious, but either way, I'd recommend trying it.

HOW TO STOP ACTIVESYNC FROM TURNING ITSELF ON ALL THE TIME:
MOD EDIT HDuser
This thread has gone WIKI and can be found under
added to wiki
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Blackstone_Tweaks
END MOD Edit
(I've rewritten this for the HTC HD and I works Brilliantly well).
Active Sync can start again by itself via various scheduling routines. There is a way to prevent this known as the "Fake Server Trick":
This 'server trick' was discovered by an Aximsite forum member known as Invid
This post originally created by IamNotMe fourpages.co.uk (Adapted by me for HD)
"1. Turn on your Device
2. Go to Start > Programs > Activesync. This will open the Activesync program.
3. Tap Menu at the bottom right hand corner of the screen. This will bring up the Options Menu. Notice the option Schedule... is greyed out? This is the all-critical option we need to get access to. But as it's disabled we can't change Activesync's default synchronisation schedule.
Ok, so how do we enable the Schedule option? Easy!!! Fool Activesync into thinking there is an Exchange Server to sync with:
1. From Activesync's Menu tap on Add Server Source.
Enter any email and untick box then click next.
2. In the following screens you can enter any old garbage. It does not matter, but just in case your unsure, just type the following in the indicated boxes:
Server Address: fake
Leave box ticked and Tap Next
User name: fake
Password: fake
Domain: fake
Leave box ticked and Tap Next
Untick all of the 'Data you want to synchronise' options
Tap Finish
3. Ok, we're done creating the server. You should now see in Activesync's main screen your normal Activesync connection(s), and a new connection called Exchange Server.
4. Go back into the Menu, and lo and behold the Schedule option is now enabled! Go ahead and tap it!
5. You will see that both options in the Schedule screen may be set to Every 5 Minutes
6. Using the drop downs, change both the Peak times and Off-peak times boxes to Manually.
7. Press the OK button at the top right of the screen.
Congratulations! Activesync is now gagged from opening on it's own and ruining your life! Your work is not done just yet though – time to clean up and get rid of the now unwanted fake Exchange Server.
1. Go back into Activesync's Menu, then Tap Options.
2. Highlight Microsoft Exchange, then tap Delete. A warning message will appear about removing files etc, but as you have no files associated with the fake Microsoft Exchange, it's nothing to worry about – just tap Ok.
3. The list will now only show your remaining PC Sync connection(s). Obviously do not delete these!"
Note: some users say it works better if you leave the fake server there (undeleted). Not the case for me, however, it does no harm to leave it undeleted as it is totally inactive and has no effect.
PS. If you connect your HD to your PC with USB cable, ActiveSync will start automatically and everything will sync up as usual (I tried it). But after you disconnect, click the Task Manager button at top right corner of HD Flo home screen and tap the X next to ActiveSync to close active sync.
My Results: Processor & working memory usage is significantly decreased, battery lasts longer and ActiveSync is not trying to sync all the time.
This does not work for me.
i think it's because you remove the exchange server. If you don't remove the fake exchange server, the schedule option remains. If you remove the fake exchange server, the schedule option is gone again.
Thanks dude, nice tutorial, worked perfectly.
Was getting around 36%, performed the tutorial, rebooted and came up with 28%. First time that has happened.
Cheers
You got that 28% just cause TF3D wasn't on yet
or maybe you just disabled it ?
28%, do you guys mean the memory consumption? i get about 45%....... you guys haven't installed anything on your hd? i got lots of stuff, like gyrator2, icontact, thumbcal, s2u2, and mail synchronisation and stuff running in the background......

mouki_9 is right. You don't have to delete the fake exchange server in order to work fine. In my HD I have kept the fake exchange server and it works.
In order to close ActiveSync when you unplug the dfevice, install elias ActiveSync Killer. That solves the problem.

28% yes memory consumed. It did go up to 36% again after I opened and closed an application.
Anyway, it's good to get rid of that active sync, no point having it on if it isn't being used

So for me I have to keep the fake account, no problem.

Hi,
I tried both options, keeping and deleting the fake server, but no help my memory never showed less than 45%, and every five minutes or so, i can see activesync in task manager, though i have set it to 4 hours, this is the maximum i can set, i don't have manual option...
Please help me.
Thanks.
Any way/program to kill the activesync automatically several seconds after the usb cable is unplugged from the phone?

'Manually' is at the TOP of the drop-down lists.
I also unticked the boxes in this window (not that it makes much difference)
I tried it. I let the fake exchange server otherwise activesync comes back always... no it's ok. But not tried to sync. my phone yet...
Ciao
Fred
With the HD I also have to keep the fake server in the list, if I remove it the manual setting also stops working. Weird but not a problem for me.
Thanks..

Stupid me , i did it, hope it works....!!! Thank you bro....
Thanks. It worked fine here. I left the fake server.
My memory improved by 1 -3%. I'm sure the battery will last a bit longer now.
However, even with no programs running, my memory is still at 36%!!! I hardly have any programs installed! Man, how do you do it so that it drops to 28% or less?
The only programs installed are (and currently none are running in Task Manager):
- Google Maps (was already there)
- Battery icon fix to get green percentage battery
- Massimo Colored Top Bar
- Mobipocket Reader
- Manila Calculator skin
- tnyynt SD card TuneUP
- TomTom Navigator
- SoftReset
- PHM Registry Editor
- Duality Software HandySync for PPC
Awesome OP i got my memory consumtion from 36% when active syc was always running to 26% after a soft reset, .
apps installed
coreplayer 2.5
garmin xt
hd tweak 5.4 including hd soft reset
igo 8
nodata
klaxton alarm programe
tnyynt SD card TuneUP
