After a lot of try and error, I have finally managed to activesync over bt using the provided MS BT stack and the bt tools. Currently the connection is very unstable and it can dicsonnect seconds after connecting or sometimes after about 15 minutes. What is the range of the bt on the xda 2 and will the situation improve if I get a 100m range usb dongle for my pc?

The Bluetooth radio on the XDA II is class 2. This means that its range is about 10 meters (or up to 30 meters). You can't extend the range even if you use a class 1 (100-meter range) Bluetooth dongle. I've already tried that.
Slightly off topic, I appologise...
Can any person suggest a good USB Bluetooth device with which XDA II with Active Sync?
Thanks, Ben.

I use a Billionton Class 1 Bluetooth USB dongle.
One of these:

If it works well with the XDA, that's enough for me, thanks.

illwill, can you tell me how you managed to get activesync to work over bluetooth? I cant get it to do anything, a step by step would be very helpful for myself and others. Thank you.
I use a Sitecom class I (100m) BT usb dongle and managed to get Activesync to work with my MDA II over bt connection after installing the wonderful BT Tools from Tobias Waldvogel:

You could use Pocket Bluetooth Tools (http://bluetooth.i-networx.de/index_e.html).
It's free, works like a charm and it's got a guide too. The only trick my friend had a problem with, was setting up the correct COM port on the PC in PC's bluetooth settings.
have fun, let me know if you need more help.
AS over BT
Delete your pc from bonded devices on your xda II if you have it bonded
Here is how I got my bluetooth to activesync with pc. Go into ActiveSync on pc and select File-> connection settings.
Make sure that "Allow serial cable or infrared...." is checked and you have put the COM port as the BT serial port.
On your xda, turn off Bluetooth and then turn it back on.
Go to Settings->System and select Bluetooth settings
Click on the start button to start BT Activesync. You will get a message that you need to set up a device that supports BT AS, XDA will search for devices and find your pc. After bonding pc, you will get a message stating that ActiveSync BT is now setup.
Open AS and select Tools -> Connect via BT (or something), and your pc will prompt you for authorisation.
*If it all works like mine then it will connect ok but the connection will drop out as soon as you try to do anything worth while like surfing the internet over BT or syncing AvantGo*
ilwill you the man. That worked a treat. I had just about given up until i read your post. Good work mate....

Well I have this problem....
my BT software (widcomm 1.4.2) insists on setting the com port as com 10 and above...re-installed several times...same thing....and of course Active sync does not even recognize com 10.....any thoughts
one more thing worth notinh...the widcom sites speaks of a BT stack for ppc phone edition and a dev kit for it....(which do support headset and handsfree in addition to the other profiles...) so any news on where this product stands where can we get it??

My Bluetooth dongle also uses the Widcomm software. But it assigned COM7 as the Bluetooth serial port. Did you assign a serial port to any Bluetooth profile besides the ActiveSync profile?
whenever I try to assign a port to any service...it is always greater than 10!!
can this be an XP thing??

No, I also use Windows XP.
I'm not sure about this but try this if it works. Launch the Windows Registry Editor (regedit.exe). Then navigate to the registry key "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Widcomm\BTConfig\Services". Under that key are several keys named "0001", "0002", "0003", and so on. Look for the key whose registry value "Name" is set to "ActiveSync". In that key, change the setting of registry value "ComPortNumber" to a number lower than 10 (like 9). Then restart your PC and see if that changes the Bluetooth serial port setting.

I wait for the final german release, and i've never had problems with AS 4.1 (except the bluescreen problem caused by Kaspersky).
Definate improvement for me, I had problems where I couldn't sync using USB when I'm connected to the work VPN. AS would keep spinning and connecting, and the VPN connection would die. Only way for me to sync was to use IrDa. Now, with AS4.2 USB sync works fine. (At last)

Anyone here with a Logitech DiNovo Keyboard set? I've been having problems since v.3.8 of activesync in that the setpoint software and active sync conflict causing the current active windows to loose focus for one second every 7seconds.
Very irritating. Has this version solved the problem? Logitech doesn't want to claim responsibility for the problem. Neither does microsoft
Logitech Desktop M5000 Laser
Jorgee, I've got the set above.
If I install the MS Bluetooth option for the Logitech and use AS bluetooth, it works fine.
If I use the Widcomm BT for the Logitech, no connection.
I had AS (using BT or USB) steal focus every 4 seconds IF Outlook wasn't open - as soon as I open Outlook (I'm using 2003), no further problems.
It appears to be an issue with AS and Outlook.
I'm not sure if this is of any use to you, but you never know...

I will try what you said. As a fix what I would do is open taskmanager and terminate the setpoint process. this corrects it but ofcourse I loose setpoint functionality.
1 question. What do you mean by "ms bluetooth option" and "widcomm"? do I get to choose from the 2 during installation? how do you recommend * proceed. I might just format my Pc over the weekend so this is the perfect oportunity.

Are you using any firewall software... or inparticular Norton Applications??? If so, try disabling it (but stay offline if ya worried), and then connecting, if this fixes your problem there is a bit on the M$ website (there are sometimes bits of use there...) I found that helped when sorting me mates Exec out... I'll dig that up
And I found 4.2 a lot better than 4.1, it's a lot faster to sync the calendar and e-mail files! :-D
Works w/o any problems
All settings were taken over from 4.1
Cheers

Seems to have sorted my problem out. Good news. Now tryng to figure out how to Send over images etc to my XDA Xec. Instructions supplied are not all that clear are they

Connect your Exec, load up Activesync
Click on Explore, you'll be taken to the My Documents on your Main Memory, drag drop there, or in My Pictures... or explore the device and create a folder in your Storage Card and dump them there...

I have the exact same problem. Interestingly I am using Setpoint software too with my Logitech mx610 mouse which is cordless (2,4 Ghz i believe) and use a seperate dongle my Bluetooth which is a Jabra A320s dongle.
If Outlook is not open i lose focus every 4-5 seconds and then get it back. Interestingly I only noticed today and I am sure i have used BT activesync and this mouse at the same time before without Outlook being open. Frickin odd...and highly annoying.

Look at the Hermese Wiki. There is a solution there but I have no clue if it will work on a Prophet. I'd test it myself but I don't have a BT dongle for my laptop.
I saw the wiki page but i didn't find any information about use prophet like a modem in MacOS X.
I tried to configure it and I miss only a driver script.
The system recognize the prophet like a phone but obviously there aren't driver for it in the standard list of modem.
Please help me
Hi i resolved the problem and now I'm surfing with my macbook using prophet like a bt modem.
The connection is very fast!!!!!
You can find here all the information:

or
http://justinblanton.com/2006/01/mac...luetooth-modem
or

you can use this modem script.

That guy is a genius, please make a donation to him.
Now with Mac OsX is possible have any kind of sync with "missing sync" or "Pocket Mac" and use the smartphone like an external modem.
Great!
I used pocketMac with my m500 which worked fine, but that was wm2003. they are beta testing wm2005 now. I applied as I need it now I got an m600. still waiting to get response!
On the website is written "coming soon". In this time you can use missing sync... it works great!
Hi,
I have an SX-66, and I used to used OBDGauge with W2003SE, the thing is I upgraded to WM6, and the program runs, but I get an error:
Error: Failed to open serial port
Does anyone know how to open a serial port under WM6?
I love this program and it works so well, I would hate to downgrade just to use it. I know it works for WM6, because a buddy of mine has the HTC Tilt and he uses the same program and it works fine for him.
If it is of any help, I use a ELM 323 connetion to serial.
If I figure it out, I will let you guys know how I did it.
--------
Also for those of you using WM6 on your SX66 with a BT GPS, I was able to connect mine when I used the BroadcomCorp_BT1.6.0.600 update.
I now connects flawlessly. Only thing is the connection takes a while to sync, like maybe 45-60 sec. I went from Miami, FL to Orlando, a 3 hour drive and it did not disconnect once. It also creates an extra Bluetooth file on my settings, but allows me to use the command manager to turn it off or on, so thats fine with me.
Do you connect your ODB reader via bluetooth?
No I connect it through data cable?
OBD WM6
If your PDA supports serial port hardware, you should open the same COM port as before? You can also use Bluetooth to read OBD data from your car : http://www.obdkey.com
Ok so everything is up and ready.
I have an ELM323 connecting to my Sx66. I am able to communicate beautifully with my Cars ECU now. Already have seen a few thing that need adjusting like my timing.
Well anyways. As soon as my wife gets home, I am going to take pictures. I will send you guys the looks. The good thing is I found the original data cable on ebay from Cingular/Siemens. It is USB and Serial, but it has an adapter to also charge it. I was worried, because my cradle did not have serial, but I know you could get an serial/usb adapter (but someone told me it would not work this way).
Anyways, upcoming plans are to do a little tweak, the same one from Youtube, called the Aximizer.
Also, one more thing are GSM attennas worth their money?
o_0
Ok....
So I am not liking something with OBDGauge, like the fact that it is a pain in the rear to get to work on my car. When I replied, it worked, now it is not. I have to diddle daddle with it until finally it works, takes 5 minutes (not very practical). I have been reading the forums and alot of people have problems with OBDgauge. I am going to install something else: If anyone you know of any programs let me know, must support WM6.
OK a heads up.
For those of you that want to do a little project you will need 3 things to get your blueangel to work with the OBDII reader in your car:
1. a serial null modem: you can find one at radio shack
2. serial cable data cable, a converter serial to usb will not work.
3. and an OBDII with elm 323 or 327, also autoenginuity has a great one package with a badass program that only works with their reader.
I am in the process of making a program with my brother-in-law for this to work with the ELM devices as we have notice that most programs are limited and do not feature things like oil pressure and miles per gallon.
I wish I knew how to create a dyno program, but I will leave it upto others to come.
I only know of two programs that work well with WM6 under the ELM that are free and they are: OBDGAUGE and ScanTest or MicroOBD.
anyways I do not know much about making a program for WM6, but my brother-in-law does. I am going to try my best with him to develop something, when I do, I will put out here for you guys to use.
I would like some new tips if possible so that we do not have to struggle too much.

How does your buddy connect his tilt to the OBDII reader, is there some bluetooth serial adapter involved? I have a Kaiser (and can't believe that the Tilt has a serial port or USB host) and am currently looking for exactly the same thing to do.
Any updates of apps för OBD reading?
Or just the same old same old apps?
OBDGauge and MicroOBD

I would like to know also. I have a bluetooth ELM327 device that connects fine to my Palm Lifedrive, but when I try with the Tilt running WM6 I get the "failed to open serial port" window. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks

QUOTE: Did you create an outgoing COM port on your phone? You then have to go into ActiveSync's options on the desktop (File-Connection Settings) and check the checkbox that says "Allow connections on " and select that port # in the pulldown menu. At least, that's how I do it in XP.
sanglee wrote:
I think I'm having the same problem... basically, I follow the instructions and still cannot sync. Here is what I see AFTER I pair the devices:
1. On PC (XP w/ all the updates), Bluetooth--> QuickConnect --> Serial Port does not have Tilt device in the pull down menu and when I "Find Device" it cannot find the device (remember, tilt and PC already paired)
2. On PC w/ ActiveSync4.2, I tried to CONNECT using "Connection Setting" and cannot find the Tilt.
3. On PC MyBluetoothPlace, I only see the following "services",
a. Dial-Up
b. Network Access Point
c. Voice Gateway
4. On Tilt, I only see the following services;
a. Wireless Stereo
b. Serial Port
c. Dial Networking
d. Headset
Help!
END QUOTE. Admittedly, this is originally dealing with ActiveSync, but I did discover the "New Outgoing Port" setting inside the Settings/Bluetooth folder. Click on COM ports. Select the device you wish to add (mine is called CBT). Hit next and select a COM port (I am using 5). I am going to test in the truck. Eureka! It works! Make sure the com port you select in OBDGauge preferences is the same you assigned to the BT ELM interface, and it should connect and start scanning. Hope this helps.
Hi!
im just wondering if there is a possibility to use my HTC Touch Diamond as a GPS dongle to my Macbook?
Anyone know if there is a app for that or something?

Okey guys!
it was a long time since i wrote here, but i actually solved the problem!
as mr-pill recommended i used Franson GpsGate
I installed the program with the .CAB to my memmorycard not the internal storage.
after installation i went through the wizard and i chose only internal GPS not garmin or bluetooth.
After that you got the option how you whant to sync with the other units, i choose bluetooth, make sure you have you phone paired with you macbook.
the in you program hope for that it supports bluetooth GPS.
and your done!

how shall i connect my device to my macbook? Bluetooth? USB cable?
Whan i choose BT it just says that BT not enabled even if it is :S

Keep us posted, I want to do the same thing except with Windows XP. If you do get it figured out would you mind posting how you did it? Thank you in advance
The only advice I can give you is: If doing via bluetooth you need to make sure the program is looking at the correct COM port otherwise it will never "see" the gps.

I had some fun with GPS2Blue yesterday, but finally got it working. As well as getting all programs to look at the right port, you need to create an incoming bluetooth serial port on the phone for it to work - you can easily create an incoming port on the PC easily (you'd expect to want your phone to access services on the PC, not the other way round, right?), but as I understand it's not quite so easy on the phone.
Managed to find these instructions and got it working perfectly: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=499896&highlight=gps2blue
EDIT: This will work for all GPS applications that uses a serial GPS receiver, not just those that explicitly support bluetooth receivers (I got hold of some very old free software and it works fine). The bluetooth linkis handled by Windows/MacOS and all the app sees is a serial port.
