I don't know if anyone else has noticed, or maybe I was the only one with a problem, but after installing the rom update from O2 I now find web pages opening up in PIE soooo much faster with WiFi. Pre update I used to have to wait ages. In fact, I only found out how quick it could be when i tried UMTS. Just tried a race with a mate at work, his xda exec pre rom update and my xda exec post rom update. Both of us logging into a site we haven't been to before (yes, the same site from the same wireless router and the same distance from the router). My exec walked all over his. At a rough guestimate (no stopwatch) upto 4 times quicker.
I'm lovin it
Brett
Do you have any other improvements to report on? does the update make the device faster in general? is the screen rotation any faster? memory management any better? does it still loose it's GSM connection and need a reset to get it back? etc, etc...
Cheers
Paul
When I did the update it whiped everything including my sim card! Luckily I had the numbers written down!

Well, I had a SIM card file saved on the X3 phone manager so I did have a copy. I couldn't get Outlook (2003) and ActivSync to sync up...
What other things they fixed in this release? Does the BT headset Caller ID finally resolved? Does this upgrade work with imate Jasjar as well?
Thanks, and happy new year everyone!
I've just noticed that there is a new ROM available from the O2 XDA Web site.... I'm downloading it now....
URL: http://xda.o2.co.uk/xdaExecSoftware.aspx
or to get directly to the files and bypass the IMEI check (!) try
http://xda.o2.co.uk/xdaExecSoftwareDownload.aspx?a=true
It says...
Xda Exec ROM - the Xda Exec System Software
The latest Xda Exec System Software is available for you to download. New and changed in this version of software, v1.30.162 are:
Microsoft AKU 2 (Adaptation Kit Update) featuring:
Microsoft Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP)* allowing Direct Push Email, Wireless Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, Global Address List (GAL) Lookup and Security Policies.
* Requires organisations to be running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 and SP2. Please contact your company IT Manager to confirm your infrastructure and for assistance with setting up your device for direct push email.
Updated Comm Manager, providing new buttons for controlling Direct Push Mail and active Data connections.
Updated Radio v1.09.00
Updated CE image v1.30.107
This software is for Xda Exec in UK and Ireland
So..... no A2DP then :x
and no blackberry support? That's annoying. Anyone done the upgrade yet?
i initially liked o2's UI more than any of the others,
and the updated CE image has me excited
but i really want to have the A2DP for my HT820s :?
has anyone tried it yet? how does it compare to the most recent qtek?
EDIT: the site is painfully congested.. i'm getting dialup speeds on a 30Mbps link
im half way through update now
So, would this ROM work with an MDA Pro? I've been trying to figure out all these different ROM versions for the MDA I'm getting tomorrow but right now I'm just confused!
Thanks.
can someone put it on the ftp
i can't deal with all these TCP Resets on the o2 site :x
im uploading it now. ive updated, i think its the same as the other new roms. it has a wireless manager today plugin and device lock and comm manager
its like waiting for paint to dry, tick tock, tick tock, Im watching it upload
Thanks for uploading )
but how was the speed of the exec & more importantly does it support A2DP? if so is there still any nosie?

its much faster , and theres no a2dp
or at least i dont think there is a2dp. How do i check?
i dont have a bluetooth headset btw
well, is not hard.
here is the step.
go to start--->Help
then click on search, type in "bluetooth"
if you see a topic called " Set up a stereo headset "
then it will have a very high chance that it support A2DP
Someone please upload rom to ftp. Ive got valid IMEI but no UK phone number. I would really be greatful
Does it have the stupid clock in the today screen or have they put the clock back in the top bar?

I've upgraded and done the search... and there is an entry that says"Setup a Stereo headset".... but it refers generically to "Windows Mobile Devices support A2DP"..... so unconclusive I think.... sorry... dont have a stereo headset either
Memory Usage if its of interest....
Following the upgrade, (using the corporate mode - password 0506), I have:
37.27 Free in Storage
31.13 Free in Programs
Doing the same in Basic set up:
35.61 Free in Storage
3o.61 Free in Programs

Yep sorry.... I need to find the hack to sort that out
Hello, I am happy to try the upgrade. I have a pair of bluetooth headphones so I should be able to clarify if it has the A2DP support. I would like to make a backup of my exec's data beforehand using ActiveSync but I cant see the option to backup in version 4.1.
If anyone can help with this, I'll update tonight and post the results.

Anyone know if it disconnects BT headsets after x minutes of connectivity?
Don't know if it's up on the ftp yet, but for those who don't want to go through the IMEI check

I just got this phone (HTC Wizard/MDA VArio) as a free upgrade and I spent hours last night trying to hook them both up so I can simply transfer files from one to the other. I couldn't get them to link.
Are they compatable in terms of just transfering files? I was hoping to sync the address book, calender, etc
I have done a search on this forum for things relating to Macs but I'm a bit confused with some of the topics. As you can see I'm a total novice and not very technical so I was wandering if anyone can help me out in terms of easy straightforward answers?
I'm quite familiar with Macs but I've never used PC's/windows before so if I don't get any help I may need to return this phone
Cheers in advance
To my knowledge there is not presently a way to sync the MDA with a Mac, unless of course, you have an Intel-based Mac and Bootcamp installed with a copy of XP.
In time Pocket Mac or the Missing Sync will have a menas of syncing them.
Up to this point I've been transfering my phonebook via bluetooth a few contacts at a time. This is only a temporary measure and a poor one at that.

Don't panic. The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile 5 is worth looking at. It is at alpha version 9 as of this message, and it will allow you to at least get the address book to your phone. That is a huge help.
http://www.markspace.com/testing/MSWM25_alpha.html
You can use Bluetooth to send and receive files... it works like a champ... though I'm on the Cingular 8125, so ymmv.
You can send CAB files via Bluetooth to install software. Some silly developers distribute .exe files, and those require some special attention (Open them in VPC, the find the CABs and send the from the Mac via Bluetooth. )
Anyway, don't send it back just yet! We're close.

Have you used Missing Sync? I have not but have heard mixed reviews -- most leaning on the negative.
I've used PocketMac and early versions messed up my address book beyond repair. In all fairness that was the original release version. More recent versions have worked perfectly.
Regardless, neither PM or MS have Windows Mobile 5 support as a stable product at this point.

I'm using Missing Sync 2.5a9 now... the alpha version, with my Cingular 8125. I'm giving it some leeway, it is alpha after all. My address book, calendar data, and tasks are all in tact.
I have no experience with PocketMac, so I can't speak to your experience with it.
that sounds promising. do you need a copy of missing sync to get the alpha?

Yes, and I took the risk ;-) Just be sure to read the mailing list archives before you plunk down the cash... the process is much better with a9, but it still isn't perfect.
The bottom line though is that I have all of my data on my 8125... and that rocks.
hmmmmmm....
so, on your report, i purchased missing sync. the v.2 version installed without issue. i then upgraded to the alpha and now the app won't start up -- it pops up on my screen then disappears. did you have that problem?
i've been perusing the support pages but can't find a solution.
i should rephrase that...the app starts up then quits, as in dead.
looking through their site i must say they have the worst documentation i've seen in recent years.
i've tried dumping the plist files and that doesn't seem to help.

Interesting. I did not have that problem... and I don't remember that being an issue at all on the alpha mailing list. Here are the archives:

The developers are pretty active on it.

thanks for the reply and the link.
Basically I am looking for some software which, on receipt of an SMS will initiate an outbound call to a number in the contact list on the phone.
something along the lines of :-
SMS received from 1-555-5555 containing the word CALLBACK and a password.
Phone then dials 1-555-4444 or any specific contact as defined in its config
it doesn't have to use the contact list but must be triggerable remotely.
Target device is a HTC Hermes. and possibly a StarTrk
The program doesn't need to be stealthy, it's to initiate the call with full permission from the owner but without intervention.
Partly it's for my grandfather, if I give him a Startrk then I want to be able to activate a call remotely if I get notified that he has triggered his medicalert system, so I can try to see if he is ok without him having to answer a call.
I googled, and found nothing, I'm hoping someone here can either write an app that can do what I need, or suggest a product that will enable me to do this.
Auto answer is too generic, I want it to be just for myself and not all callers, and the password is because there may be times I just want to send a generic SMS
Sounds like you are talking about an SMS Callback trigger, though I have never heard of a mobile based one.
I always seem to want the impossible or the unwritten maybe it's time one was written?

just unwritten, it's not impossible
pretty easy actually
i'll try to throw some together this week if/when I have the time
try this
Just place it on the phone and edit the config.ini if needed default settings are:
trigger = CALLBACK
password = pass
I tested this on my TyTn2, and it seems to do what you wanted, the program will activate the speaker when calling (can be changed in the config.ini)
this way if your grandfather cannot reach the phone he still be able to talk..
But test it before use, I'm not sure how sensitive the mic of the phone is.
I do like the idea so I'll probably add some more functionality
- auto pickup on call from fixed number
- status
- call/sms log
Let me know what you think.
PS. this was created for a touch screen device not a smart phone...
also I can not be held responsible for damages, phone bills etc.
but that goes without saying ..right
-=edit=-
tested by sending an SMS to myself, the program then called my number, but when i tried with a friends phone it didn't work
let me know if it works for you (if you have 2 phones)
also make sure if the number you send it from is in your phonebook or not (could be the issue)
-=edit=-
that is the issue, working on it
Issue solved
now I need to figure out how to replace the attachment
I'll add it in a new post
I also believe SKSchema can do this in watch mode. Actually SKSchema can do lots of cool things in watch mode.
new version attached
-=edit=-
build a cab, also added apptodate support
is it just me or does it seem to autodial the number that sent the SMS?
one addition would be the facility to set the option that if number X sent the SMS then callback to number Y
example - if I am in the US I will have the number 1-555-1234 but my grandfather is in the UK - +44-555-5555
I run a voip line with a UK DID number such as +44-555-6666 so when the SMS is received from 1-555-1234 the return call goes to the +44-555-6666 instead of the US Cellphone (cost reasons lol, UK landline free, international call of any length = US national debt)
Here is a SMS Trigger I built, do not know if that satisfy you.
Check rk-SMSSwitch under my signature.

Sorry, i just noticed this reply
To be honest i wasn't planning on creating one, but i could give it a shot
the biggest problem is i don't have a Smartphone to test it on..
I'm sure you could probably find a few testers in the forums, there's quite a lot of people on here!
I'll obviously be willing to test anything you are able to come up with. I don't know where you are located mr gee but on ebay UK you can buy an old Orange spv c500 (HTC Typhoon)or c600 (HTC Tornado I think) really cheap now. There are also WM6 roms available for these devices on this site somewhere.

I'll keep it in mind
Attached is the same program but compiled for a smartphone, I'm not sure if it will work, I remembered I have an emulator for smartphone installed, but I received an error message when running the exe.., I think because the CF.NET wasn't installed..
let me know
I tried it on my QTek 8500. The exe ran but all I got was a window with a blue background and the words "SMS2Call v. 0.03" in black.
No buttons to press or anything, had to use Task Manager to exit it. Which id did without complaint. Thanks for trying, some work may be needed I think

Currently that is the program
Could you try to edit the ini file?
in case you have 2 phones, add the number from the 2nd phone in the file
save and run the program
send an sms from the 2nd phone with the passcode mentioned in the ini file
your 1st phone should call this number after the SMS receipt
I know the program doesn't look like much but i might fix this in the future
when i do i'll also look at the exit button.
the reason i didn't was because the application was for an older person,
this person could be playing around with the phone accidentally closing the program ...
I looked in the .ini file and then tried sending a text to the phone containing the words CALLBACK PASS. I tried this with/without a space, up and lower case, with the program in the background or on screen but it didn't do anything. Do I have to put a shortcut in the Startup folder or something? Or am I not formatting the text message properly? The sending phone number is in the contacts list if that makes a difference.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Could you just not set his phone to auto answer ? - that way you can call him any time.

not really, assuming it works maybe it has to do with the formatting,
Callback should be in capitals and pass in lower letters.
when I tested this with my TYTN2 it worked the way it should.
also did you enter the default number ? e.g. the number that will be called?

[sarcasm]
Gee why didn't I think of that...
[/sarcasm]
Seriously have you read the thread?
the topic starter didn't want it this way for several reasons...
Default number and closed flip
I didn't enter a default number because I want it to respond to any number that sends the text. I deleted the DefaultNumber line from the config and it worked, to a point. The phone I'm running it on is a Qtek 8500/HTC StrTrk, which for those who don't know, is a flip phone. My problem is this, if the phone is closed when the text is received the call is made but cut off immediately because the phone is set to hang up calls on closing. Nowhere can I find a setting to stop this from happening, anybody have any ideas?
ok so i was checking out a wp7 phone yesterday for the first time and everything was looking great.. but i noticed the dialer screen is just the dialpad and a display of the numbers you have punched in.. does the job but come on.. how about some innovation..
i have a windows mobile 6 phone and when i start dialing a number, it shows me suggestions from contacts and more importantly, recently dialed numbers..
so for example if i called someone 2 weeks ago.. and i only vaguely remember the number, i can punch in the first 2 or 3 digits and the rest will show right up...
anything like this possible on wp7?? its kind of important for me
