I have a Pocket PC Phone. Will there be any upgrades offered for the ROM from the Pocket PC 2002 software to Pocket PC 2003 software?

Hmmmm..... Wish they would make up their minds about this! Either that or have the right hand tell the left hand what they are doing and visa-versa!
Now, where can I get ahold of that 4.01.00 ROM that's running loose?
MrDollyMaker.
$8 an hour customer service reps
Anybody seriously think they train these people or provide extraneous info on something as obscure as a software update for a phone product they're barely promoting?
No. You sit in front of a terminal and look up account information. Maybe you get a raise if you can pick from a series of canned e-mail responses and get to be on the online support team.
Odds are the thing will show up here or from some other, more progressive country.
Just IMHO.

I"m actually in agreement with you, as when I have had problems and called their support, that was what they explained to me.... unless I get to this "tier 4" or higher which is their development team level. I believe they said there is like 6 or 7 tiers. 4 being the begining development level and consisting of like 20 people or something like this. :?:
Same runaround from ATT
I talked to ATT today and although I will give the tech credit for spending 30 or so minutes trying to find out the status of the upcoming upgrade, the final result was about the same as with TM. Thier final suggestion was to check on the Seimens site. That is a waste of time as the main Siemens site has no reference to the SX-56. I did find the last ATT updates that on www.mysiemens.com, but no mention of the update.
It is sad to say, but I think the telcos are trying to forget these devices and move on to the newer stuff that is easier to support. Remember that they have been used to phones that either worked or didn't. With all the concern regarding the upcoming cell # portability that occurs on the 24th (here in US), you would think that they would be doing everything possible to build customer loyality.
they even remove the device from their website
so, did they give up MDA Vario?? :?:
They have removed the vario from the website because they are releasing the mda vario II in may, which is the htc hermes - can't wait to see it.
see here http://www.coolsmartphone.com/news2343.html
As for a rom upgrade no-one is sure was meant to be march - people are hope full for may see here http://www.coolsmartphone.com/news2349.html

where did u get the release date for the vario II
i thought they'd removed the vario from the website as they can't meet demands at the moment - the vario is still available in stores
I got a vario two days ago but they are not showing on the site as they are continually running out of stock. (not surprised when even on the cheapest web'n'walk package it was only about £36)
The German T-Mobile release date is May but apparently the UK won't be seeing it untill Q4. (Direct from their sales team though who knows if the were fibbing or not)
T-Mobile ARE not releasing the Vario 2 anywhere in the near future. There has been no talk wahtsoever of it being released anytime until Q3!
The real reason for the Vario not being on the website is because the tremendous success of Flext has resulted in a stock shortage. It is T-Mobile policy to remove out of stock handsets from the website so as not to result in huge waiting lists.
in addition and reply to the original question. The AKU2 rom update has not been released becuase for most NORMAL users there is absoultely no need for it.
When T-Mobile release the planned instant email service for Microsoft Exchange I imagine this will release it instantly.

Do you know if they have it ready? People are buying these things at our place with their own money with the expectation that the ROM upgrade push is coming out any day.
thx for everybody...
so, i may have to wait unitl May??
i think i should use another rom instead..
I think we will be looking closer to June.
To be honest anybody with the technical know how and ability to set up a Microsoft Exchange Server or use a paid service should know how to flash another ROM.
On a bigger scale think how easy it is to setup a blackberry compared with Microsoft Direct Push, imagine the extra calls into technical support for those wishing to use it.
However WHEN the full service is release it will be beat everybody else!
is it available in t-mobile stores?
is there a chance to get a mda vario in one of their stores? id like to buy one but its not possible online because it was removed already from their site.
thanks.

I rang up the sales line (number is on the site) and ordered a Vario straight away on flext 35 and Web n Walk. Got the 25% discount also and the phone arrived next day . Give them a ring, i dont think they plan on adding it back to the site for some time.
thats a good idea. will call soon. thanks a lot.
This is what I have just today been told about the ROM upgrade....

Thank you for your email regarding AKU for your MDA Vario.
We have a new ROM version scheduled for release by the end of next month. At the moment, however, we are unsure of whether or not it will have the facility for push email. We are still in the process of deciding what features to add/improvements to make.
Our download site is: www.t-mobile.co.uk/webnwalksoftware
If you check there at the end of June then if all goes to plan the new ROM will be available there. We are not sure if we are going to release AKU2 as there may be issues relating to our own blackberry service if we release it as they could be in direct competition to one another. Blackberry on the Vario is another thing that we are looking into releasing with the next ROM.
-----
need to wait until the end of june and without aku2????
it is totally unacceptable..
use O2 or qtek rom is better...
The AKU for t-mobile is now out....
Also on the CPW site the MDA Vario is quoted as 'discontinued'....
What everyone finding t-mobile coverage like? It used to be shocking, but unlimited data is an interested prospect.

i just checked the t-movile website but its not showing anything new. where did you get your infofrom? or where can i download the rom?

Danke
Ace! That must mean the UK Version is out soon!!!
...least i hope so :?
I've got the German download. I can read enough German to run this and make it happen, but what it doesn't tell me is whether this is a .WWE or a .DE ROM update. Obviously I don't want to apply it and find it's all German. Can anyone who has applied the ROM confirm if it's Worldwide or just German?
Cheers!
I sent an e-mail to T-Mobile asking if they were planning to make an ROMS available and whether or not they would be offering a ROM upgrade with Windows Mobile 6. Below is the response that I received; Good Morning
There are no plans at present to release a rom update for the MDA Vario 2.
When there have been new operating systems for windows mobile devices released these have never been available as an upgrade, only as a new device model.
Hope this answers your questions.

T-Mobile
I've even e-mailed T-Mobile back telling them that it works on the Hermes, but they're still insistant that I won't get it throught them. So with regards to Windows Mobile 6, will Microsoft make this available in a way that I could purchase it?

I was hoping that they are going to release on for the Wizard. By the looks of it, I'll be going Underground.. or getting Beautiful
Anyway, I'm just wondering how accurate this information is. Just that his/her English sounds weird to me (eg. "When there have been..." and the rest of the sentence), probably some young girl at India T-Mobile call center hired to answer emails?
I dont think that you are wrong there....
I feel that they are working on something in the background and waiting for all the issues to be ironed out before releasing any update...
I am wondering if there is going to be a cost involved or weather they are going to only give it to NEW hermes????
T-mobile = Unpredictable
D
I would be interested in how T-Mobile would react if there was a large scale request for it.
I spoke to T-mobile a week ago regarding problems with the Vario II. After speaking with their tech support people, the customer rep told me that they are testing ROM updates for the vario II and expected it to be available in a month.
So keep checking http://www.tm-phonedownloads.com/
I didn't ask about WM6. I doubt they'd release it for the Vario II as it could affect sales of future devices, but if they get the majority of the problems sorted (particularly bluetooth) i'd be happy enough. I'm on my 2nd handset.
hi all
just received an email from t-mobile uk saying that have no plans to release the wm6 rom. Does this mean were are cursed or will we be able to use the HTC version when it comes out. is it just a case of losing branding and the cab files with the gprs settings etc???
cheers
Yeah i know, i got the same reply by email at weekend. you think that with the unit being so high spec that they would want to upgrade to WM6 for customer satisfaction
Disgraceful! Let's hope someone cracks the CID protection soon so we can use the HTC ROM when it is released!
Not good news. Let's all sign a petition and get it over to T-Mobile.
-Krip
yea, not happy about this at all, been with t-mobile for 8 years now, theyve had a **** load of money off of me. let me know if you start a petition
Since WM6 isn't an upgrade for any Advantage yet, is it really likely their emaildrone is going to know about it really?
Yes, we should petition them. But in context. "When WM6 is shipping on the Advantage please make it available for Ameo"
I second that, we need to make sure they know how not realising an operating system upgrade as big as WM6 would nark us Ameo owners off. (to put it nicely!)
Don't get upset..we'll get it anyway
Sorry guys I'm in disagreement with you on this one. I agree that a device as new and feature rich as the Ameo should definitely come with WM6, but it was never promised or even mentioned to the best of my recollection prior to and after the Ameo was released. Therefore we all knew what we were getting before we shelled out, even though we all held out hope that an official T-mobile WM6 upgrade would be available.
I'm quite happy to wait until CID unlocking has been cracked and an official WM6 ROM is available for the Dopod or Advantage version.
Let's face it people, we'll get there in the end anyway, wether they want us too or not.
CID is already available through imei-check, but they cant do it over-the-air. I emailed them about CID/SIM unlocking and this is their reply.....
Hello,
>>we can unlock it, but remote is not possible right now. If you want you can send the device to us for unlock. Special delivery is ok. The unlock is 20 GBP + 7 gbp to ship it back to you. Please send it to:
MIGsofT LTD FAO:Florin Mandache 19 Cowan Road Balloch Glasgow G68 9BX. Send just the handset + battery. >Regards, > >IMEI-CHECK Team >
I was very unsure sending the unit and needed reassurance so i replied.....
Thanks for your reply, but could you supply me with a contact number(landline) to help keep track of my unit, and so i can make payment by card. Your website doesn't contain any contact info which makes me a little uneasy.
And this is the reply i got back.....
Hello,
You can call me on my mobile : +44795*******.
The payment it will be done via paypal or direct bank deposit after we received the device and we unlocked it.
As you might guess, i'm still wary of sending it off so i guess i'll sit and wait until another option is available.
i was checking via STREETMAP, the postcode for imei-check (look at my post above) and i found this........http://www.myhouseprice.com/HousePr...imeframe=1&timeframemonth=99&timeframeyear=99
CHECK THE FIFTH HOUSE DOWN THE LIST! Its the same address and postcode for IMEI-CHECK, and it went up for sale on 23/03/07. Now i definately aint sending my unit through the post, to dodgy!

Excellent! I'm just down the road (for a certain value of "down the road", being a two hour drive but one I do frequently) from them.
Wonder if they'll do it whilst I wait

i agree with you here, T-mobile has never promise WM6 update, so if they decide not to offer it, it's no problem, you just need the CID tool, and you can install the DOPOD or HTC one.
Whilst i accept that we were never promised an upgrade i consider that most of the Ameo owners believed that an upgrade would be in the pipe line.
By using unauthorised upgrade methods are we not invalidating our warranties and risking the chance of removal of technical support from t-mobile?
Perhaps there are associated overhead costs for T-mobile with regard to supporting another operating system but there are already phones in their range that use wm6. We are not asking them to support *nix.
I rang t-mobile last week regarding a phone problem last week (unable to make/receive calls). i was told that nobody on their thd had an Ameo manual (in the end the problem was 3g network related rather than a fault with the phone).
To date T-mobile have no publicly available rom versions (at all) which leads me to think that they are not yet up to speed wrt support for this unit anyway.
I have been a T-mobile customer for 10 years and have been out of contract for the last 3 until selling my soul for 18 months to get this Ameo. T-mobile cannot provide me adequate support at the moment and HTC will not because it is not their phone.
At a minimum i cannot see why we can not be offered this upgrade as a gesture of goodwill.
If it is a question of HTC (or microsoft) charging too much for the upgrade then perhaps they should consider how few units would have been sold without the t-mobile branding/subsidy.
i for one would be happy to petition T-mobile and will put my money where my mouth is later this weekend and start a site for the petition.

If everyone thinks the same with you, then all T-mobile PDA user will be asking wm6 update (T-mobile MDA,MDA PRO.....). The things is it cost nothing to buy the upgrade, Microsft does not charge anything for it, but in order to publish the update, service provider will needs to run testing on it to make sure it's stable, it's nothing to do with HTC here as well, HTC offer the basic ROM, then T-mobile will needs to finish it, so it will takes them a while to make it stable, this is where you see the advantage of each different ROM, they are not all done by HTC, they are done by the service provider. And when you say WM6 device is already available on T-mobile, which one are you talking about? i don't seems to remember any of them.
Another important issue, you are going to see less and less HTC product on T-mobile, and any other provider too, HTC is now changing their company structure, they are trying to be like Nokia, so you won't see T-mobile mark or branding on HTC device in the future. So you already notice, T-mobile is the only one selling HTC advantage in UK, and it could be the last one, (or the very last few). In the future, you will see only HTC brand. So because of this, T-mobile has a very good reason not to be bother with WM6 update, i believe they are due to the end of the contract with HTC, and really, i don't think T-mobile care too much about Ameo, you don't see it advertise anywhere....
The bottom line is, even T-mobile release official WM6 update, i don't think it's going to be as stable as the DOPOD one or HTC one, they are already in the testing stage, and beta version will be release for tester next month. So all we need is the CID unlock, then you can choose the best ROM to upgrade.
Owners of the dash have been offered upgrades to wm6
And i go back to my point about not being offered support (understandably) for unauthorised upgrades. Surely if you know that the majority of owners of a particular phone are going to follow this path (ie unofficial upgrades) it will be cheaper (in the long run) to aid them and ensure that they have a phone that works. Otherwise you also run the risk of them blaming the network when it is in fact their phone that is not working.
With regard to your assertion that "t-mobile don't care about the ameo" the argument doesn't hold much water as it would imply that they don't care much about their customers- hence we return to the crux of this thread.
I cannot go out and buy a copy of wm6 and install it myself. if i purchased a copy of vista and discovered that it would not be possible to legitimately upgrade (purchase) to it's replacement (bar hardware issues) i would not purchase vista. It is now a given with phones of this form that we expect software/os improvements to compliment the hardware.
not every one is aware of these types of forums and would benefit from the upgrades and the ensuing improvements. It is through T-mobile that awareness would be increased (with the greatest respect to this site).
I do not doubt that you are more savy than me but if that implies an "i'm alright Jack" mentality then I personally prefer to be ignorant (it is after all blissful)
When sms was rolled out did you sit there and say "oh i don't expect to be able to use that because I signed up when vox was the only option"- i think not.

i understand your point there, but if you stand at the T-mobile side and think about it, then maybe you will understand if they decide not to offer wm6 update. It cost them time and money to release, it's pruely a bonus for T-mobile customer if they offer it. So do you think T-mobile MDA PRO should be offer WM6 as well? since it's the second most expensive PDA that T-mobile offer.
Anyway, what i am saying here is we are not suppose to flash un-official ROM, it has already bought this site trouble. I know lots of people (including me still do it anyway). I guess time will tell whether T-mobile will lunch WM6 update or not, but if they decide not to, don't be surprise, they have perfectly good reason for it.

let's all hope the upgrade will comes out from T-mobile, yes you are right, i don't know about T-mobile, and i have no contact inside this company too, all I know is when i went to the 3GSM this year, they did say something about the WM6 update but they are not sure which machine to offer by that time.
So hopefully they will release it, if not, we just need to hope a CID tools then all Ameo user can then flash HTC, DOPOD rom.
i have a telus lg optimus 7 unlocked and now on the sasktel network. my question is am i screwed for getting these updates because sasktel doesn't recognize the phone as one of there models and i am not on the telus network so they wont push it to me? i cant justify paying 400 bucks for a phone that i cant get the new updates the Microsoft rolls out.
If you do not get this update, you will get the next one (By mid March) definitely. Microsoft has confirmed that much. I contacted Telus, and it seems they have "no information to offer at this time". Basically, Telus is the only carrier in North America that has yet to offer update for their WP7 devices, but two weeks is not that long to wait, right? Especially considering that this update does...nothing, and all updates are cumulative.

I'm planning on giving Telus a few more days before complaining loudly, as the rollout was to be staged, so maybe they volunteered to be last on the list :|
Personally, I'm fairly concerned about this as Telus doesn't have the greatest record for updates in the past, and holding this back isn't a good sign (imho).
Even if this minor update is rolled into "no-do", there's no guarantee "mango" won't be an 'odd numbered' update, or that we won't be weeks behind others getting either/both.
From the windows phone team blog
(http://windowsteamblog.com/windows_...-answers-about-our-first-software-update.aspx)
Q: I still haven’t received an update notification yet. When can I expect it?
A: It’s hard to predict because it depends on many factors. It could be days—or even weeks—before you’re able to update your phone.

So as the rest of the world gets copy/paste, theoretically we telus users could just be getting the pre-nodo update.
I'm right there with you I had the same thought when I read that article. I don't understand why Rogers and Bell both have launched it but Telus hasn't I tweet'd customer service about it and they answered back they had no information about unreleased updates.
I am hoping that maybe Telus wanted to "save us" from the trouble of doing 2 updates in a fairly short period of time. At least we know that they can't block nodo. Out of curiosity does anyone know how Telus is with android updates?

I've been looking around all the standard places for more info but haven't come across anything. My fear is that the wp7 userbase on Telus is small enough that they don't consider us a priority.

I hope that we are considered a priority. I'll do my part and call and bug them maybe if everyone jumps on board we'll get this update.
i spoke to sasktel and they have already rolled out the patch on there network. but because my phone is telus branded and the zune software see the phone as telus it wont give me the update. sasktel does not recognize my phone for updates so i would assume that's because they don't sell the phone.
I'm in the same situation as you kazman. Have an unlocked Telus branded Optimus 7 running on the Bell network, and wondering if I'll get the update when/if Telus releases it.
Will report if I do.
I cannot believe we can't find a solution to get the update...
Like Android, installed custom ROM of WP7 to avoid carrier blocking.

So I have emailed back asking that he double check the site and not just send me to the page that tells people what the next update is but infact to check the update page (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsphone/en-us/howto/wp7/basics/update-history.aspx) Still waiting on an answer but it's great that they took the time to really look into it So I have emailed back and shown them the link and also shown them Bell and Roger's pages releasing it as well as a few carriers with the same phone (LG Optimus 7) that have released it. (because you know that's where they would go next) Will post results on here if I get them.
that is completely ridiculous. i called a telus store yesterday in Saskatchewan and she told me that they don't know about updates and recommended that i move the date on my phone ahead a year and i should get the update then. but she had just told me a minute ago that there where no updates. they need to get a clue.
So it seems like Telus just doesn't know what to do with updating the phone. I am a bit surprised and doubtful that Microsoft didn't tell them though. It just shows a huge lack of communication within Telus.
as I posted in the other thread, I talked to a telus rep who also no idea about the update; but was able to confirm they didn't have to pay MS for it, so we should be getting it.
I've got a 10 year old account with them and made it clear I would be willing to switch carriers if they dropped the ball.
Hopefully we can get enough people telling telus the same that they'll get their act together.
i would like to know why we cant just get the update from the zune software. and if a carrier such as telus hasn't released the update how does the zune software know not to offer you an update or does telus need to respsond to microsoft that the update is out on there network. how about a new rom from bell or rogers that would solve all our problems.

It's going to be something like that (e.g. telus tells MS it's approved, WinPhoneUpdate sets the flag to allow it).

I'd assume going to a differently branded rom would solve it, although that'd likely negate access to the telus app store. Another potential issue is that the telus optimus7 is a different model number from the european one. I have no idea which version the mexicans got so there may not even be a viable alternate rom. :|
An unfortunate truth
Look guys, this first update was OPTIONAL for carriers. It did not provide any new features and was just a test update before the real update in a week and a bit. Unfortunately for you guys, TELUS decided to not push this one in favour of just sending one update later. You shouldn't be upset at TELUS ... yet. I had an Android phone with them before and just about lost my mind over the update issue, but I think WP7 will be different because MS has more say than the OEMs do regarding Android. I feel bad that you guys are suffering, but it isn't really TELUS' fault.

That doesn't really disuade any concerns.
It's not just a test and no user visible features does not equal not necessary - think API changes before mango
My main fear is that something I'll deem critical will be in one of these minor updates, and telus will make me wait 6 months till the next major update instead of just pushing me the fix.

I concur, as this is hopefully a unique/one time scenario, which is why I'm waiting to see what they do with NoDo before complainging too loudly/switching carriers

Just because I feel like nitpicking (I'm just being a smart-ass, don't take it seriously/personally ):
There are three "entities" involved in getting my phone updated
1) Microsoft - they've released the update, not their fault
2) Myself - I've connected to my computer and forced zune to check for updates, not my fault
3) Telus - They're not pushing the update for whatever reason ... pretty sure it's their fault
optional or not this still makes telus look bad when all other major carriers in canada are pushing this update but not telus.

Here's the answer! I got back from Telus after showing them where the update was and asking why we don't have it and why Rogers and Bell have released it.
Hello Justin,
Thank you for your reply.
Due to the technical requirements involved we are unable to disclose when the update will become available.
I would recommend to check our Website for updates as this is the first place any new information on your handset will be advertised:

There's a technical requirment that makes them unable to disclose when the update will become avalible... doesn't make too much sense but I do agree with all of you. It's not that I desperatly want this update or that it's really negativly effecting me in anyway, it's that I fear this pattern may continue on to updates that improve the phone. We'll see what happens in March hopefully Telus pulls it together or at least has a better answer then just because.
