doe's anyone know how to remove scratches from the screen ??
i used braso[uk product for polishing brass/copper] to remove scratches from plastic stereo covers but to chicken to try it on my xda :?
Hmm.. I know what you mean about being too much of a wimp to try it
If you do go down that route, I would suggest using Silvo as opposed to Brasso as it is the less abrasive of the two. How about something like car polish ???
Rgds,
Rob.
There are proprietery treatments for scratches on cd roms, screens etc, also you may find that if you place a reusable screen protecter in place you wont see the scratch. I waited over 2 weeks for delivery of a protecter before using my xda2 as I didnt want to touch the screen.
I use the screen protectors. Even with the protector on I have some slight damage. an't complain as it would be a lot worse.
See here:
http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/icecream-polish-review.html
Don't know if this will work safely with the XDAII since it has a touchscreen.
I also know a person that used smokers toothpaste and a lot of elbow grease to remove a scuff/scratch, has anybody tried jewelers rouge?
You can use normal toothpaste and it seems to work fine.
I have used it previously on my Ipaq with success.
Toothpaste is great!!
yeah toothpaste are great! i used Signal 2 & it worked with me, it has reduce the scratches down to about 40%!
but still there are scratches!
Anyone knows how to get rid of scratches 100% ?????
I used computer cleaning foam, it didn't do anything!

Brando is good. From HongKong.
Expansys also sell good screenprotectors. Around £8

Here's the best solution....I bought a pack of 15 screen protectors (thats right!) for just around 15 USDs! The quality is great, and I have no issues....
Look around for Ultra-Slim Screen protectors from Pocket Solutions for the I-mate Jasjar, and you should find it....if you're having trouble finding the url, let me know and I could help ;-)
cheers,
San
Another thing that I forgot to mention is that, it uses "static" to cling on to the screen and NO adhesives...this ensures that it doesn't ruin your display!
I also love these, as they extremely slim making it seem as if you had no screen protector installed! I think their line of products are branded under the name ScreenGuardZ....

Before you put a screen protector on, I would guess that you should clean the screen first - otherwise you are just trapping dirt under the screen protector.
My question is...what do you use to clean the screen with? I don't use screen protectors and would be interested in finding out what to use to clean the screen with. Any thoughts?

Whats the best tip for getting them on without bubbles ? Put one on my wizard and its bubble city.
My tips would be:
1. Make sure your screen is as clean and dust free as possible.
2. Peel just a little of the backing off from one end and offer up the screen protector to the screen.
3. Peel the backing off, and as you do so the protector will attach to the screen.
4. If have bubbles then lift a little and re-apply using something flat/smooth to push it down (DON'T PRESS TOO HARD - YOU WILL DAMAGE YOUR SCREEN).
5. If you have dust under there, a straightened paper clip with a blob of Blu-Tac on the end will be able to reach in and get the dust as you lift the protector.
6. If you need to lift the protector, don't try to use something to prize the edge up - you will mark the protector, just use cellotape (clear sticky tape) on the protector, and pull on that - it will pull the protector up.
Cheers,
Steve.
Anybody have one lying around that they don't want and might sell it? Ebay doesn't seem to have any and all the other places i've looked don't seem so credible (like this). If you have any info, feel free to PM me.

Hi kareem9nba
I have buyed on this site several times, they are trustable and quality is good

Hope it helped,
Hi,
I've been using my xda for about a month now and have noticed it hard to keep the screen clean, it seems to be very greasy etc... Has anyone invested in a screen protector for this problem or is it not really worth it?
Also cause i have only had mine a month with limited use, has anyone who has owed this phone longer noticed it gets scratched from the pen etc after longer periods of time...?
I know not important questions but just something i've been wondering none the less. Thanks
Got a brando one
I wanted to ditch the case (as it's pants) so I got a brando screen protector. It was a real faff to fit and I still haven't got it a) square or b) without loads of [email protected] under it, but it does its job, it seems to be sensitive enough and I (probably) am too ham-fisted to judge how difficult it is to fit the thing.
Hope that helps.
I've been told the Martin Whatsisname Screen Protectors are really good.
I'm thinking about getting one of these.
Do they leave any marks when you peel them off afterwards? From the glue and stuff?
Hi Tom
They don't use any glue, so you can just peel them off with no problem.
They cling to the screen like clingfilm.
nothing else than brando! have used it on all of my previous devices .. just no comparison to the cheap ones on ebay ...
I would say screen protector is a must for me...I'm too lazy to pull out the stylus every time....a screen protector will allow me to tap with my fingers, nails.....or even a pen....in fact, I put a protector on almost every mobile phones, my previous PPC....
Fair enough, but at £8.50+ its a rip off!!! for a bit of plastic that cost 0.05p to make, they're laughing all the way to the bank....
Supply & Demand
Maybe. It's a quality product and it's still a lot cheaper than a new screen...
You pays yer money.
Maybe but im just not convinced, how can you decribe a bit of platic as a "quality product"? I have heard they are extreemly hard to fit properly without getting finger prints on them etc and you get air bubbles and it is really annoying if you even leave a few specs of dust underneath it...?
No one round the office here seems to bother with them. I dont expect with any device for the screen to remain untouched forever, i think it just comes down to normal wear and tear, as with everything. Just my views anyway, need to hear more about these things before i had over best part of £10.
I have seen a Martin Fields one and someone on here said they were good. Is it easy to notice its there if you have one installed?
I have bought some via ebay from screenprotector24 at £1.99 for 6 plus P&P. There was also a buy 2 get 1 free offer on too. I have never been a fan of screen protectors but I agree that with the Mini-S it is verging on essential.
I am more than happy with the quality of the ones I received.
Hope that helps someone.
Regards,
White.
I've been looking for some on ebay, what did you type in to search and find those? can you link me?
Hi,
Sorry, I'm at work and barred from ebay. www.screenprotector24.de may well work if I recall correctly.

Brando screen protectors
Just because something's made of plastic doesn't mean it isn't quality. After all look at Pamela Anderson! (Sorry).
The Brando one I got is doing its job. Before I had the screen protector dirt would pile up and I'd be cleaning it 3 or 4 times a day. Now I don't have to. I was worried the screen would get damaged. I don't have to worry what I use on the screen or shoving it in my pocket.
Yes, you can tell it's on if you look. It looks like you've left the manufacturers sheet on but without a tab to remove it if it catches the light. Straight on, you'd be hard pressed to know it's there - honest.
I haven't seen the cheapo ones myself, I went on recomendations on forums from people who had more experience.
Also, Brando service is outstanding in my experience.
Right ok, i am thinking of getting one just for peace of mind. All i can find is Martin Philips ones on UK sites... Where can i find a decent priced Brando one on a UK site for a 02 xdx mini s? Can someone name a shop or link me etc?
Thanks
Go straight to the source!
I bought mine direct from the Brando site in Hong Kong... http://shop.brando.com.hk/screenprotector.php. It arrived within 6 days
I had the antireflective one on my old XDA2, but these ultra glossy ones are MUCH better. It was a fiddle to fit, but I honestly can't that it's there other than by looking for the edge. I've tried this a few times and I find the following procedure works well.
First off, you need to find as dust free an environment as possible. Choose a room that doesn't have any carpet, or fabric in it if you can(cushions curtains etc). Boil a kettle, and make the room a bit steamy. When the steam clears, it should take some of the dust with it.
The trick to avoiding dust is to be prepared. Get a good lint free cloth (lens microfibre cloth worked well for me) and a blower brush - small rubber bulb with a nozzle. Also keep some masking tape ready. Finally you will need a bright light - ideally a spot light, or if you've got low fluorescent lights under over your kitchen work tops, they are ideal. Wear latex gloves if you have any (you can usually get packs of 20 from poundland)
Stick some masking tape to the your worksurface, folding it back on itself, so that the sticky side is facing up. Use several strips so that you have an area two or three times the size of your screen.
Spend a few minutes polishing with the lint free cloth, and then set the phone down, face up, well illuminated (from above) and switched off!. Blow off all the remaining dust with the blower - make sure that no dust is stuck (might require more polishing) at this stage you have two hands free - in a minute you won't! Dont worry if some dust starts to settle back on the screen at this stage - it will be loose, and you can blow it off in a minute.
Next step - take the screen protector, and peel off the backing two thirds of the way. Keep the 'sticky' side face down so dust doesn't settle on it. It's helpful if you can crease the backing slightly as it's quite springy and tends to get in the way a bit. Be careful not to touch the exposed side though. If you're right handed you'll want the screen protector in your right hand at this moment.
The next bit, you might need to repeat a few times until you get it right...
Blow the last bits of dust off the screen (do NOT use your mouth - you will spit all over the screen). Line up the most exposed end of the protector - its a very precise fit, the edges will touch both sides, and the end should be lined up exactly with the end of the screen. If you push the protector under the plastic above the screen it will be short at the other end. You might need to lift and reposition a few times to get this right. Once you have placed the exposed end, put a finger on top and check the alignment. Now check for any dust. You might be able to blow one or two bits off, but if there is more than that, you need to lift off the protector, press it down onto the upturned tape to get rid of any dust, blow the dust of the screen and try again. The dust sticks to the tape MUCH better than the screen, and will not leave any residue on the Brando protector, so you can do this quite a few times if necessary.
The important thing here is not to panic. You will get dust, and will need to go round the loop a few times, but as you'll be prepared, there will be no problem. Once the protector is lined up, the screen is (temporarily) dust free and there are no bubbles (phew!) carefully remove the last of the backing film and holding the edges very lightly between your fingers (gloves help here) lay the last bit removing any bubbles. Once down, it is hard to get the protector off without damaging the edge so only do the last bit once you're sure there is no dust/bubbles.
Remove the front sheet and polish. With any luck, you should hardly be able to tell that the screen protector is there!
Thanks for those really comprehensive instructions! I'm going to order one from the Brando site today and will pick up the blower and lint-free cloth etc from Jessops (camera shop) this weekend.
Martin Fields overlay plus Question
Nice one on such detailed instructions!
I order a Martin Fields over lay plus today, they seem to have good reviews everywhere i have looked. They are slightly adhesive though, but as this is a "gentle silicon based glue" (so i hear) i think that means it will be fine on the screen.
Has anyone had experience on using these and what the screen is like after you remove them, any residue etc left afterwards? How long will it last roughly?
Thanks for any help guys!
I haven't tried this, but you could probably save yourself the cost of a blower brush by using a bike pump or better still an airbed footpump (you can use that one handed).
tom99, if you get a Martin Fields protector (or any other sort that uses adhesive) I'm not sure that its safe to use masking tape to clean it. The Brando ones stick to the screen electostatically, so its safe to clean them with tape (the instructions that come with it recommend scotch tape). If the instructions you get with your Martin Fields protector don't mention cleaning with tape, then I would miss out that step. Can you add a comment to this thread when you get it (or anyone else that has used a MF protector)? It might help others decide which protector to go for.
It seems no matter how hard I try, I'm finding it almost impossible to not get *some* dust under my screen protectors when I apply them - am I alone?
Si.
See my post in this thread - works every time.

Steamy room - aren't you worried the humidity will affect the PDA?
Ineedtoys: great stuff!
And as also in that thread, use the frosted 3m sticky tape to lift dust off the screen protector. It's only mildly tacky.
I make a "sheet" of sticky tape, laying it in strips across the screen, and then lift it off just before appling the protector. If you notice any remaining bits of dust, use another strip to lift off the dust again just before applying the protector.
Steam will help keep the dust off the screen to begin with.

It doesn't have to be that steamy like a Turkish bath - you need to be able to see what you're doing after all! Just humid enough to kill the dust and static in the air. If you're worried about condensation forming, just make sure you keep it in a warm room afterwards until it's had chance to fully acclimatise.
I've got around seven bits of dust trapped under the protector - and I've tried five times - should I give up and accept that I've done my best - I couldn't see them when applying!

Well now I've done it a few times I don't settle for one - if there is, then I go back to the start and give it a good wash. But, there is the risk that the more times you remove and apply the protector, the more likely it is that you'll damage or distort it. The most important thing is to take your time. You'll get used to spotting the defects when applying, so the only thing to do is to abandon that attempt and try again. Trying to squeeze the dust specks out will _never_ work.
Hi!
I always use the Brando Screen Protector, which is a reusable, washable, permanent foil.
For this the trick was, to clean the pda screen with a soft cloth which is made wet with glass cleaner and water. of course not too wet, just a little, so that the pda screen is not soaked.
the glass cleaner seems to have some antistatic effect so it does not get any dust on it.
But this trick is for the Brando foils, which is a little different than the normal foils.
maybe this helps.
I used Brando as well, got it on first time, no dust.

Indeed it does - with one additional note - use a quality protector - I've tried ultra clear ones from ebay, but just applied a PPC techs clear protector - not a problem.

Hi
Maybe a stupid question but I bought some screen protectors from Ebay and fitted one of them quite succesfully. Problem is the touchscreen no longer works, no reaction from the stylus.
Are they just crap protectors or am I missing something basic??

I think you've answered your own question.
Si.
I posted a while ago about this with no response. I'd really appreciate some kind of input or advice or anything.
There are those of us who don't like screen protectors on our imates. Of course, after a year, this leads to those little, annoying scratches that seem to magically appear. There's stuff on the market to rub these out; one such product is Displex. I'd like to know if anyone has any experience with these products or any other methods of removing these tiny scratches.
If you haven't had a response in a year, I'd imagine that is because most people like the anti-glare and improved writing surface that a screen protector offers <shrug>
I know those scratches you're talking about but the first thing I do is to get a film for my new device to keep up the resale value.
I know this is a personal preference, but what do you have against films? I can't actually think of a downside to them apart from the first two attempts where you get dust under them and it annoys you for a week before you calm down enough to try it again =)
Maybe you could try one of these polishes and tell us how good they are, after all this information seems to be somewhat lacking ... ?
Amen to that. Actually the good brands (though a bit more expensive) of screen protectors are so easy to apply. I bought a couple of the ultra clear ones from Brando and i'm still on my first for close to a year now. Every now and then I clean the film with rubbing alcohol.
Since I own a few Swatch watches and most of them have already scratched plastic faces, I bought the little tube of scratch remover. It gets the job done but a lot of pressure is required especially if the scratch is very deep. Since my hands got very tired, I then used a Dremel. Word of advise, don't set the Dremel at a high speed because it will melt the plastic.
I don't know if the Magician's screen has some sort of anti-glare coating. When I tried to remove the scratches on my older pair of eye glasses, the anti-glare coating was taken off wether rubbing it manually or using the Dremel.
i've had only bad experiences with screen protectors. I guess that's what i get for being a cheap ass. Plus the jam is my first pda, so i never really realized how much of a problem those scratches really are.
I suppose the solution is to try the Displex screen scratch remover and then slap on a Writeshield AG. Thanks anyway.
I suggest you try first a very small area in a corner of the screen just in case the scratch remover will a a greater damage.
Good luck. Hope you do get your screen as good as new.

Absolutely. I once used scratch remover on my old XDA (Wallaby) and found it to be efective in removing the scratches. Problem - in the area where i removed the scratches the display was compromised - it looked like a prisma of kinds, kinda like when you little drops of liquid on an cathode ray tv - you could see little bits of red green and blue.
I think some kind of layer was removed causing this. So really try it on a corner before you go for the entire screen.
And another word, if you are not familiar with using a Dremel, NEVER use it for cleaning or polishing of plexiglass. I ruined a swatch with that. Used it even at a low speed, but the polishing wheel made the plexi so hot the watchglass actually looked like a bumpy road. Had it professionally repolished at a jewelers place, but by doing this the plexi had got so thin that i broke after a while...
Dremel and plexi - no good in my opinion.
i have a few scratches that came with my magician (i didnt pay a cent for the scratches ). let us know how you go.
BTW, has any one used car polisher for such a task? I heard (not sure how correct/accurate), that its possible to remove small scratchs from cds wih car polisher? I wonder if it works for lcds.
now how is man enough to try it out in there magicians hay
Hi,
I have a brandon screenprotector for the Trinity. What is the best way to apply it? I always get air bubbles under the protector.
Do you have to wash and dry it first?
Thanx!
Do you mean 'Brando'? Brando screenprotector (sp) is probably the easier sp to apply as it is 'card-like', rather than other wobbly sp that is way cheaper than Brando's.
Make sure you apply the sp from one side to another, getting rid of bubble along the way and you ought to be fine. The problem may be because of the slow speed of applying, dust is my only concern.
No you do not have to wash it and dry. It needs to be dry, but you do not have to wash it.
I find I can get a few bubbles underneath the protector but after about 3 days they're all gone (a trick I learnt from my PSP).
I will give it a try again.
On a site (where I bought the sp) I read the best way is to attach it in a bathgroom while the hot tube is running.

Well, I rather risk having dust than to have my phone under water there just isn't any table/chair in my bathroom to do such things. but, I'm sure it is good. vj actually recommend a having some other sticky-tape (particular brand/type, cannnot remember) and do a quick swap.
I bought a package of 3 on ebay for $5. I stuck one on and pressed down and then took it off. It took everything (dirt, dust, etc) off and then I put another one on and it was perfect.
I put the bottom on and slowly pushed the protector on using the cloth wipe my sunglasses came with. I didn't get any bubbles that way so I am set.
make your own
search for a plastic sheet. cut a screen shape + 1 mm, then, put it carefully over the screen and under the plastic border around the screen. its easy and fit perfectly. the sensitivity is perfect.

Please notice that you dont need to be IN the tube, you yust need the steam in the bathroom to avoid dust when you aply the SP, I'm waiting for the boxwave clear touch to arrive... used to use them on my Dell Axim X30H, a very nice product I might say
