bootloader "GSM ERROR" message - MDA, XDA, 1010 Software Upgrading

When the device goes into Bootloader mode, my device displays a background that consists of four equally sized vertical bars, colored (from top to bottom) white, red, green and blue. On top of this, it says:
WALLABY
Bootloader
V5.15
WAIT
After a minute the WAIT is replaced by GSM ERROR. The message is in the blue bar, but have a white background.
I've putted in an SD-Card with a working rom from my working other XDA created with XDA OS Image tool from the xda tools from Jeff. But it just won't load that sd card. It just does othing. Has it something to do with the "GSM ERROR" how to work around this?
The XDA which i try to make working has:
rom version: 4.00.16 (usa) but has to be europe... (has been flashed with the wrong rom)
Rom date: 07/10/03
Radio version: None
Protocol version: None

@mettel:
Take a search here in the forum. There are different threads concerning this topic. Some users could restore their devices themselves.
Maybe you have some warranty on your device and you´re able to use it....

keep first 8 digits is hooked
call timers: zero
no reset button anymore cause i pressed it allready!

or wouldnt it be able to use any other card if i had a simlock to O2?
pleas help!
Spiko
From the above I would conclude your phone is indeed not SIMlocked, but you are experiencing problems related to Radio Stack version 4.14. The answer is to upgrade to 4.16 or 4.17, which both exist and are floating around, but haven't been offered as official upgrades yet.
But if i put my xda in bootloader moder there stands version 5.14!
if i reet it normaly there stands 3.14? which is my radio version?
wher can i get a new one for germany?
can i upgrade via dockingstation?
Version numbers
There is a whole bunch of version numbers associated with the XDA:
The Microsoft PocketPC OS version
The HTC software version (3.00.01 through 3.15.something)
The Radio Stack version
The protocol bytes
The Wallaby Bootloader version
Each version number represents the version of some different part of the software. Your bootloader is a separate thing with a separate version number, not related to the rest of the ROM. Your bootloader could well be present before the device gets a plastic casing and is told whether it's going to live a life as an O2 XDA. a T-Mobile MDA or a Siemens SX56.
A certain HTC version will be built based on a certain release of the PocketPC OS, with all the HTC specific drivers and additional (O2 or T-Mobile) related programs added.
The Radio Stack version depends on the software loaded into the GSM part of the device, and can vary independently from the OS. There's different versions depending on whether its a 900/1800 (Asian/European) or 900/1900 (American) phone.
ok but where can i get a update for a german xda?can i get it free without paying in an O2 shop?
Where can updates been found?and how do i upgrade my rom version?

then Hilfe, thne FAQ check XDA

Is "Flash Writting" a radio stack possible?

I can't boot my XDA because I b0rked the radio stack upgrade.. So it just hangs at the O2 bubbles... and when I go to the bootloader I get GSM error. I can flash write new ROMs no problem - but I still get the same problem... Is it possible to "Flash Write" a RSU?
Thanks.
After further investigation - it would appear it's not possible to flash write a radio stack. I've totally killed my XDA
I think a guy on the forum from canada can do something with dead xda, he programs the chip directly "jtag"? Look around the forum because I cannot remember his name.
Did a search for JTAG... http://xda-developers.com/jtag/
Looks scary

THis is new to me... where did you find this information?
I am in the same boat, but I believe we could flash the GSM ROM from a SD card. I have been looking for some information to do this ..
Just now, I borrowed another xda in order to back up the working GSm ROM to my SD card. However, it turned out that the Wallaby was a 5.17. After patching it , the GSM ROM to SD (bacup) "menu" was gone.
I believe we could flash the GSM ROM, because in the bootloaders, there is always a menu for GSM ROM to SD backup.
However, this is only my personal observation. I was hoping if our XDAdevelopers could shed some light and give us some advice in this matter. It's been a really sad XMas for me because of all these 'excitements'.
If someone could post a GSm ROM (in my case an 900/1800) and perhaps also give us a method how to 'write' it to a SD RAM. THat would be really cool!!
I still have the Write GSM on my XDA... but the option seems to require a special piece of software.. It asks you to connect the "R2284 cable" or something similar, and to start the "PC Monitor" software... It doesn't just write it to the SD card as it suggests
Ross: many thanks for your information.
Hmm.. in my case, it won't be easy to buy or find a serial cable. D
If anyone knows how to get this serial cable in Bangkok, please kindly let me know.
Let's hope our XDA developers and other friends in this great forum would give us some other idea to get around this..

RSU 4.21 problem: stuck at boot splash

hi,
i have just downloaded the radio stack from O2 v4.21. I have tried to upgrade through active sync 3.71 it upgraded ok, but when i went to restart the XDA it gets stuck on the boot screen. the one that says test not for resale... and at the bottom right hand corner its says A.30.07 and then locks up.
normally before i tried to upgrade it said A.30.07 the underneath it said 4.20...
anybody know what i need to do to correct it?? i have looked through loads of forum posts and now i'am really confused???
Thanks alot
Zetex :?:
a bit of further info my Bootloader on my xda1 is 5.22
I'am also willing to pay for help i recieve to get my xda up and running again, because without it i really i'am stuck. I don't just use it as i gadget i use for everyday work/pleasure...
Thanks alot
Zetex
can anybody help me????
Hi,
No experts or semi-experts seem to be offering any help. I consider myself a fairly experienced novice so I am not sure how useful (or safe) my advice is. Take care! But here are my observations..........
You say the upgrade went OK? Does this mean you got as far as the message Flash Complete! Press OK to restart your device?
If so, this is encouraging as most of the problems I've located on this forum stopped part way through the upgrade (many at 1%).
Did you follow the instructions accompanying the upgrade to the letter? (ie. kill all running programs, switch off phone etc.)
The 4.21 upgrade is for the PW10A1 model not the PW10B1 (check the back of your xda's case to find out). Not sure how you deal with this one if yours is a PW10B1.
Can you enter bootloader mode? (soft reset with the stylus while holding the power button). If so, this is also good news. Someone with more experience than me could probably tell you what to do next. (Possibly flash a new ROM using the SD card method. Although you upgraded the Radio Stack it may have corrupted or upset your Radio Unit/'ROM'. If you decide to do this, I suggest something based on the v3.17 such as the XDA developers special edition ROM ..... you can always upgrade to WM2003 again later.).
Good Luck!
[/b][/u]
cranny,
Thanks alot for the reply m8, I did try what you have suggested by reloading the 3.17 o2 rom via sd card and now it won't even switch on anymore.
not to worry its gone off to the xda repaire center in Norwich today for repair under warranty.
Thanks for the reply anyway m8

They took the link down from the front page, but if you go here and do the sytem upgrade its dated for 3/10/2004.
Edit: Oh and the version number is 4.01.16
Wonderful .... pulling it down as I write this....
I needed something to do tonight anyway...

this is the BEST post i've seen this year!!!
they realy should call it 2004 though, dont you think? lol
downloading now, will comment on it later.
Damn, has someone got a number we can enter into the box for D/L?
Oh, nevermind, nobody post their personal phone number or friend's phone numbers... there's an easy way  .
T-Mobile has an email service attached to their customer's mobile phone numbers, so it's [email protected]. So all you need to do is search google for @tmomail.net and you will find a lucky customer who has revealed their legit mobile phone number for your use .

Great - I've started to spread the word:

So, if I don't have an SD card and want to upgrade, will this work via ActiveSync?
My BootLoader is v6.22 and it seems that even with a borrowed SD card I cannot transfer any cooked (or original) ROM images after putting this 4.01.00 ENG T-Mobile ROM over the original - apparently I have to downgrade the BootLoader or something.
Does anyone know if this will work via ActiveSync with my BootLoader and current ROM version?
Thanks...
I've got it up and running, all seems fine. Yay for no more attenuated volume that we had with ATT .

Please read the following thread :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=3274
You need the Wallaby bootloader patch, or (more dangerously) downgrade to wallaby 5.15. I did the downgrade which makes life easier, but it's up to you.
The $64,000 question - does this version have wireless modem?

The thread you point to says "For users with Wallaby Bootloader 5.17 version" - does this mean that you followed these instructions with a 6.22 BootLoader and it worked? If so, I'll grab another SD card and try again.
I believe it works the same for 6.22, but sorry I cannot be certain. I'm sure I've read somewhere where people have done it.
Thanks for the information - I'll keep digging around and see what I can find out. If I make any discoveries I'll post them in the forum, as I'm guessing there are many users out there in the same boat.

Please help me figure out what i have

i bought an used HTC 8525 and immediately ran the unlock tool found at:
http://pof.eslack.org/hermes-unlocker/
Below are the software details on the unit:
CE OS 5.2.1622 (Build 18128.0.4.4)
ROM v: 3.62.502.3
ROM date: 10/11.07
Radio Version: 1.16.00.00
Protocol v: 32.53.7018.01H
Would someone one please tell me:
1) which ROM am i running, if possible to tell
2) why does the screen sometimes go white and i have to cycle the power to get the screen to go back to windows? it doesnt always happen, what i get after 2 minutes is the screen dims, as expected, but it is as if i had a screensaver that was just a plain white image.
3) with the keyboard closed and the unit unlocked, none of the keys on the front of the device work. tapping the screen works.the scrolling wheel and the alt OK button on the side also work. but the soft keys, windows, OK, dial/hang up keys have no effect. is this the default behavior? if the phone is locked the softkeys work (i know when i punch the PIN then use the softkey to hit UNLOCK)
4) are these problems likely to be caused by a buggy ROM?
thank you very much.
total newbie.
Sadly, I think you may have this problem:

Mike
And to answer a couple of your other questions, it would seem you're running the stock AT&T WM6 ROM ... or a derivation of it.
I would suspect it's a somewhat cooked version, since the stock ROM would have upgraded the radio. You're still using the radio that came with the unit when it had WM5 on it. But it's entirely possible that the OS was simply stripped from the shipped RUU and flashed without any changes. A lot of folks did that to avoid issues with the RUU not working right with HardSPL installed.
Speaking of which ... you should check to see if HardSPL is installed, and install it if it's not.
Good luck with your white screen issues. This is a very nice device when it's working correctly.

If you cant return the phone don't worry! the white screen issue is a known issue and can be fixed following the instuctions in post 2

OK, I think it's time that you introduced yourself to the Wiki. It has answers to almost everything you're asking here. Also search for the MrVanx guides, that will give you step-by-steps on installing HardSPL and a majority of ROMs.
Quick answer is to put your device into bootloader mode (side OK, Power Button, and reset with the stylus simultaneously until the tricolor screen comes up), and look at what's on the screen. HardSPL version 7 will show IPL-1.04 and SPL-2.10.Olipro. That's what you want.

thanks pvs.
i returned the defective one and got another hermes in perfect condition.
the wiki on how to run HARDSPL points to a 404 page on mr vanx's site. does anyone have the pdf version of this page i could use?
