Playing MP3s over LAN connection with SanDisk WiFi - Networking

Good day.
Anyone tried to play MP3 files on an O2 XDA-II over the LAN? Just had this idea of 'wireless MP3 player' accessing a server over the network. I am using SanDisk Wi-Fi card (supposed to be 11b) and standard Media Player shipped with Windows PPC 2003 (T-mobile ROM V1.60). The source of MP3s is a Linux server with 100MB LAN connection and Samba 3.0. I am mounting a share using Resco file explorer and tapping on individual files. Unfortunately, there are 'click' sounds all the way around as if there is not enough bandwidth to play. I tried 224, 192, 128 kbps MP3s with same effect. Playing same files off a 512mb SDCard produces excellent results. The access point I am using is 3com OfficeConnect 11g. My notebook equipped with 3com OfficeConnect 11g PCMCIA card plays files perfectly (and xvid videos as well!). Any suggestions? Maybe there are third-party MP3 players doing some sort of buffering? Anyway - can't understand how an 11 megabit connection could not sustain network load of playing a 128 kbps MP3 file.

Have you tried running it off from your laptop or desktop computer running Windows XP/9x? Because I had the same experince when using Lunix, it was a Linux Mandrake 9.1 but should not have been any difference.
The other possiblity is the music player on the PPC, I encountered several unplayable MP3s (Yet it played fine on the PCs, don't ask why! )
Hope you got it resloved by now...

Yes, I did run same MP3 files off laptop with Windows XP and 2000 - runs fine. Moreover, tried SAME mp3 files off the SD card on O2 - plays perfect. It must be network, not Linux server. Unfortunately, got no solution yet.

mpeg player

having a bit of a spin with my xda2 regarding playing mpeg. first of all am i right in assuming that when you get your unit the first time around the rom doesn't have any application for playing mpeg files? with that in mind; i installed pocket tv and divx; at first i was able to play my old mpegs but lately the xda2 doesn't seem to recognize the files. i've erased and reloaded them on the sd card, still pocket tv doesn't seem to recognize it. when i use divx; i can play the mpeg files but there's a message on the screen saying "error in audio". did a couple of resets but still the files are not being recognized or played properly (when in fact they play fine through my laptop). lastly, is there another kind of mpeg player that i can install other than those 2 i've mentioned?
any help would be appreciated. cheers mates

"pocketdivx" is over a year old, maybe more. It became PocketMVP and the latest version is available here: http://home.adelphia.net/~mdukette/downloads.html
If it still doesn't work, you might have to reencode on your desktop pc with a different audio codec (such as lame mp3 or something)

hey,
thanks a lot for the info; i just removed divx and installed the mvp software. nice that one!
annnndddd...i'm not sure if it's common knowledge but i sure as hell didn't know about this one. when i downloaded mpeg files to my sd card, my laptop was on "mute"...volume was turned off. thus when i tried playing the mpeg files the unit didn't recognize them :?: but when i turned on the sound, transferred a file to my sd, it played fine with pocket tv. however, previously while the volume was turned off i transferred mp3 files but they weren't affected in any way. strange.
anyway, thanks a bunch for the link!
cheers mate

Media Networking - Suggestions?

In my house, I have a rather large media network.
Components:
2tb seagate external hard drives with media (x3)
2 Laptops (Windows 7)
1 "media server" (pc running windows 7 connected to 2tb harddrives)
1 Belkin N+ Router
Right now, the "Media Server" streams media from the 3 2tbhd's to the 2 laptops as well as a PS3. The 2 laptops are networked to stream and the PS3 receives it's streaming via PS3mediaserver.
When I am at home, my HTC HD2 connects to my home network. How do I get the media on those harddrives streamed to the HTC HD2? I know it has a media streaming app but thus far using the physical address on the network has not worked.
Thoughts?
Thanks

You need a streaming server that the HD2 can use either via the browser or the streaming media app, over the wifi ...
I would check out tversity , it is free and pretty damn cool ....

+1
Orb is another one that's worth checking out:
www.orb.com
I will look in to Orb.
I tried Tversity previously to stream all media to the PS3. Unfortunately, it would crash when I tried to direct it to more that one external hard drive. I might look into it again. I am sure I will find out it when I look at it, but I wonder if they have added "thumbnail" previews. They had not in the past.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Playing 1080P/720P Movies - Enquiry

Hello,
I am planning to buy SGS2 OR Galaxy Note and was wondering if it can play 1080P/720P full length movies on it... All my movies are around 5-7GB in size.
Also, will there be a problem playing frm internal memory as it wont support anything greater than 2GB?
Plz post your expereince for "playing Big Files"
i have played 10 gb blue ray rips(full hd), via wifi streaming and it played like charm. Didnt tried copying things to phone memory, as you said the file system wont support larger files, but you can try formatting your card to ntfs or exfat with suitable mods, if you want to use those bigger files
The CPU/GPU cannot be beat by anything in the market for playing hidef movies. No matter the format or bitrate I can't find a file this phone can't play, and most of my downloads are 1080p high profile from my media center PC. BUT if you use fat 32 (default) you'll be limited to 4gb per file. Maybe use ntfs (search here)?

From the above, i see tht the phone can play big files with no problem and i just have to format my Sd card to NTFS... But wht about internal Memory? can it be formatted to NTFS - If yes, its simple OR i have to hack sumthing ??

For it to support NTFS, you need root and do some trickery. It is not straightforward.

A wifi router is simply enough to do the task. Yout pc dont need a usb wifi adapter.
All the data are transmitted from your pc to mobile via wifi router.
Once you have a wifi router on your pc to transmit data, you can try the following apps to play the movies from your pc to mobile.
1.VLC direct.
2.ES File Explorer.
The later one is much efficient
Hmmm... Wifi Router is big and pricey.
So, i think if work can be done with a portable USB Wifi adapter why to see anything else?
Plz can u do lil more explaining, as i really suck at this part of wireless technology and why i cant just use adapter?
@craige
Wifi router is not that much expensive, you can get one from belkin or netgear for cheap rates.
1.Once you install your wifi router in your pc, the work is pretty much done.
2.Connect your phone to your wifi.
3.Installed the above mentioned softwares.
4.Configure it and start watching movie from anywhere within your wifi range.
USB WiFi adapter will most likely only allow PC to connect to WIFI network. But you need a router or WiFi access point to host your wifi network. WiFi is not like Bluetooth where you connect one device directly to another.
So cheapest option might be wireless router or access point. It all depends on your network configuration at home, like what other devices you have and is there an empty Ethernet port on your main internet box (broadband modem).
Why not watch the movie on your nice big monitor? Or better yet, stream to a massive tv rather than a 4.3" screen. I can't see why I'd need this in my own home...

Installed ES File Explorer and now I can browse all the shared folders in my PC over WiFi but I can't seem to play MKV files. Do I need to install a different player app in the phone or should ES File Explorer do it?
Install MX Player, that should help.

How do you guys stream 1080p mkv's smoothly, I just bought a TP-link WR1043ND 300 Mbps N router and on my phone it says I'm connected at 65mbps. I stream SD movies from my pc to my phone fine but HD movies stutter.
P.S. using ES File Explorer and Dice player

[Q] WIFI Speeds - new router?

Hi,
I've been trying to stream some .mkv files from my Windows Home Server to my Nexus 7 and anything over 1GB runs like a dog, choppy and slow (using any media player). It works fine locally using OTG or from the internal SD partition. The problem appears to be the wireless, so I did some testing using 3 AP's dotted around the house.
Using ES Explorer and copying a 1.3GB file from my WHS to my Nexus 7...
Billion 7800N - 1.5-2 MB/s
Mikrotik 951 - 500-600 KB/s
Netgear WR802T - 1.2-1.5 MB/s
Unfortunately the Mikrotik is the one near the bedroom, where I stream the most!
Question: Whats the best throughput you have seen via WIFI - and what router are you using? I have conceded that the Mikrotik is cack for WIFI, so I'm looking a purchasing a new AP / Router. The current "top dog" for speed appears to be the Asus RT-N66U (I've seen on various sites). It's expensive but I just need it to work, anyone use the RT-N66U with Nexus 7 for streaming have an opinion before I buy? Would be much appreciated.
Thanks
No N66U users out there??

Well, not sure if this will help before you purchase an RT-N66U - but maybe offer some insight and maybe you won't need to spend anything...
I've got a couple of different setups I have had success with for streaming at home and have no issues with larger mkv files...none of which depend on Windows or WHS for "streaming" the files. That said, I think you might be ok with your router and might want to start with looking at the source. Also, I have 2 routers in my home, one is set up as a "bridge" so that I can access my wifi without having to have a second SSID and password for the additional AP. The second router (the bridge) is not as robust as the main, but still works just fine.
Unless I'm mistaken (I know windows in general doesn't, and as far as I know Win Home Server is the same), Windows isn't going to natively handle your mkv files without a codec pack or some type of splitter and I think that's where you're running into issue.
But I personally don't use windows itself to stream anything to my devices directly, and I do have a box with WHS on it. However, I do my use my other windows boxes with both Plex and XBMC and they handle larger MKV files fine.
I also have had success with large MKV files using a cheap Pogoplug that I picked up for $15 and playing them from a flash drive hooked up to it! (its like this http://www.adorama.com/COCPOGOP21.html)
That said, Plex (http://www.plexapp.com/) lets your pc do the heavy lifting with the transcoding (which is essentially the same that's occurring with your windows home server, but it handles mkvs) for the device.
There's also XBMC (http://xbmc.org/about/) just "serves" the file and using something like UPNPLAY (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cx.hoohol.silanoid&hl=en) and MXPlayer (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mxtech.videoplayer.ad&hl=en) should work fine.
As far as the pogoplug - it doesn't like the mkv extension, but if you rename the file to an "mp4" extension, the pogo app will allow you transcode or play original. I don't care to have it transcode anything, so I select "play original" with the app on the nexus and let mxplayer do the work - no sweat. In addition to playing at home, that option (as well as Plex) allows you to stream when away from home (3g/4g or wifi) without having to punch a hole in your firewall to access it from off site.
One thing you might consider is ripping some type of large videos in a couple other formats other than mkv and see if your WHS handles them better. If so, it's isolated to MKVs and your WHS and you likely need to re-encode to a different format or try another option. Also, have you tried disconnecting the router you feel is "slow" or not connect to that AP and see if the movies stream better from another AP? If it is the same, it's related to the MKV and WHS.
Hope that helps some.

Videos randomly stop playing in Kodi

Anybody had or having this issue? I am using TVMC, and I have my video library set up with an SMB share to the Nexus. I will start playing a TV episode and it will stop a few minutes in or halfway through and return back to the episode list. I don't think this has happened with a movie (yet).
I have tried messing with Hardware Acceleration vs Software (one actually works better for streaming sources from outside of my network). Tried clearing out the cache, purging packages. None of these have made any improvements. Thinking I may try to install a vanilla version of Kodi, and maybe also try Gotham.
Did a little searching and haven't found any solutions yet.
This is probably #3 in my disappointments with this device so far along with lack of apps, the Netflix bug, SlingTV's frame rate, and the Live Channels app. Starting to wish I opted for the Fire TV.
Yep Kodi runs like sh.. on my Nexus Player as well.
But on my Shield Tv it runs without any problems.
Video not playing on Kodi
Hi, I had the same problem. My video library is hosted on a Windows 7 PC and connecting over SMB to stream a film would work sometimes but not others. After much research I found the problem to be the network connection to the Windows PC. I found this out by installing ES File explorer on my Android TV and copying a large file to the local storage of the player. The copy would usually start then suddenly stop after a random length of time, additionally the bandwidth was very low. Try this to make sure you can copy a large file to the device without any problems.
I fixed the problem with a combination of solutions. I upgraded the network card drivers of the Windows 7 PC, I purchased an OTG LAN adapter for the Nexus Player and finally I used haneWIN to connect to my media library via NFS rather than SMB.
I now have a rock solid connection.
Hope this helps
Thanks for the responses. I have found that streaming the videos to Kodi via UPnP with Emby works fine. So I am thinking that is a network issue. I have DHCP set up, so I think what I will try is setting a static IP for the Windows PC
I also have one of these Ubee Modem/Router combos, but I have been using my own router. I didn't have the Ubee in bridge mode, which I changed last night. So I will get everything set again like I had it and see if it will play without stopping.
your problem is most likely trying to stream content over wifi. i dont care what anybody says, wifi + streaming media sucks. it can work fine 1 minute and then stop working another regardless of how good your connection may be.
