xda2 and linux - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

hi,
just bought an xda2 (i am ex-pat in thailand). I'm able to gprs into AIS nework and singtel network no problem under WINDOWS. This includes both bluetooth and USB. However I want to connect via my linux box. I'l able to talk to the device but I am having troubles actually connecting into AIS via pppd. I know this is a major long shot but hoping someone might have tried this before.. Basically I'm hanging during LCP negotiation... thanks!

Bluetooth GPRS modem on Mac OSX

Hi and HEEEELLLLPPPPPP!!!!
Has anyone managed to connect the Mda Compact to a G4 Powerbook via bluetooth to access the internet on GPRS account??
I cant get the Apple to create a bluetooth dial up connection with the mda.....
Will a change in stack be useful eg bluesoleil / toshiba???
Are there any modem scripts for the mac??
Has anyone achieved this via PocketMac??
I am trying to connect a G4 Powerbook with Tiger to a unlocked UK T-Mobile MDA Compact runnung Qtec 1.12 English rom with big storage hack on UK Orange.
sorry always wanted to use one of those emoticons....
Any help would be greatly appreciated.....
Riz,
Have been trying the same with both QTEK 2020 (forgot HTC name) and S100 (Magician) both on panther & tiger. Haven't gotten past the Bluetooth issue. In terms of GPRS scripts http://www.taniwha.org.uk/ has some, but not for our favourite devices. Am desparate to get same sorted. Do believe HTC's Bluetooth implementation ha something to do with it. remember on my 2020, I did run a Bluetooth utility to increase BT functionality, but to no avail....
Sorry not to have been of more help
Phil
Welcome Mr. Apple ;-) I am also running on "the only real system". We have to wait for http://www.markspace.com/missingsync_windowsmobile.html Will not take longer than 2-3 month any more.
Thankyou guys for your responses desperate (sometimes girlie like) cry for help. In my quest I have found that there are many like us stuck in the void between ppc and osx.
I even tried creating a connection using virtual pc !! Desperate times etc .....I can’t wait to try this Missing Sync ..sounds too good to be real so I have Emailed the company with our queries.
Have any of you guys tried it yet ???
Thanks again
sorry should read "to my "desperate girlie like etc
will poof read next time

Actually the mark/space site says The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile will be available before the end of June, not 2 or 3 months.
So any day now.
BUT, I have read in another thread here that both mark/space and pocketmac programs promise a whole lot more than they actually deliver, and are buggy.
Are there no other alternatives?
i think that the panther version is available now for the MDA Qtec s100 etc and the tiger version will be in the form of a free update??
it will retail for 39.99usd...could be a costly experiment??
has anyone tried any of these products in the past???
please could you point out the thread where you saw the negative reports on pocketmac and missing sync
thanks
Yes, long time ago I used Missing Sync for Palm Clié. It was stable, simple and great. Im quite sure, the new version for my MDAc will be similar. Thats the reason why I already deleted PocketMAC from my Powerbook and don't sync anything till MarkSpace software is available.
If you have an old version from Missing Sync, equal if Palm, PPC or whatever, you can updrade for just 19 $
By the way, not very actual, but helpfull:http://www.markspace.com/support/remove_pocketmac.html But you also have to check everything manually and yourself, cause with Tiger there are new and more files less.
Hi Mr Macmax,
My knowledge of palm based systems is not to good. Please could you tell me ......
Did you sucsessfuly use the missing sync to connect the clie via bluetooth to your powerbook?
Did the clie allow you to use it as a modem to connect the powerbook to the net??
This is what i want to achieve with my MDAc and powerbook via a bluetooth connection. I am hoping to use the MDAc as a bluetooth GPRS modem for my powerbook.
I was wondering if the missing sync program would bridge that particular gap??
Thanks
Hi riz,
well it is a very long time ago I used Missing Sync for Palm, so I can't really remember what was possible and what not.
But it's important to know that we have 2 possebilities to sync our Baby on a MAC: MissingSync or PocketMAC. Last one is a, sorry, pain in the ass, so rests MissingSync.
If it will work like you described, well, als them. But I'm quiete sure it will work cause it already worked with PocketMAC. Otherwise it can be a problem regarding to the right phone driver. May have a look here for modem scripts: http://www.taniwha.org.uk/
Thanks for your advise Mr Macmax but i have already been down the script path trying generic and ipaq scripts in the hope to fool the G4...but its just too smart...
I am tempted to buy the panther version of missing sync that is available now.... i think?? set up panther on the powerbook and give it a go??
still....could be a costly experiment
BLUETOOTH TO BLUETOOTH.....WHATS THE BIG DEAL!!!! ....one of the teeth needs a filling!! is there a doctor in the house!!!!!
sorry....this is really starting to bug me....
hello again ....
Has anyone managed to create a Gprs connection with the MDAc and Mac via a SD Wifi card so the phone modem is used to connect the Mac to the net?
Also.....
Anyone have experience with GSG script creater ?? Could it be used to make a bluetooth Gprs script for the MDAc so the Mac recognizes the bluetooth modem???
http://www.macronsoft.com/pages/en/gsg.html
anyone ??
Did you use an AT String. This is neccessary for windows. Look for the AT String needed for your provider and paste it into the properties of your bluetooth modem. At least, this is the way it works with windows.
I have managed to get it working with XP. I am trying to get it working with a Mac G4 Powerbook
..thanks for trying though....
The thing is, it shouldn't depend on the Os. The SSA service is standardized, your stack will be the same as for windows I guess (Widcomm, isn't it?). The only thing you need to set is the AT string, the rest should be done by the profile itself (i.e. giving you a dialog where to enter the connection settings).
The problem is that the i can not get the Mac to recognise the MDAc as a modem... so i fall at hurdle one..
..and i am not to sure where i would enter the init string ??
The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile is out now . but . i emailed them with this issue and they kindly informed me that this software will not allow the mdac to be used as a bluetooth gprs modem.
its been a while but has anyone cracked this little nut yet ?

Using TyTn on 3G as an internet connection for laptop

Is there any information on using a USB cable, and/or bluetooth for this, and how temperamental is it v a dedicated laptop PCMCIA card?
Thanks
TYTN as a modem
I've not tested my TYTN (VARIO II) as a modem yet, though I regularly connected my MDA PRO to my laptop at work initially via USB, and subsequently via bluetooth.
I was informed by T-Mobile that a bluetooth connection was less reliable than USB, however i found this not to be the case, and i rarely lost my connection via bluetooth vs REGULARLY had hangups with USB. The only drawbacks to a bluetooth connection appear to be that it drains your battery quicker and also that obviously the potential data transfer rate of bluetooth is inferior to USB 2.0.
I did have the T-Mobile Data Card for a while but cancelled the contract after a couple of weeks once i realised I could use the MDA as a modem! There really is no difference in signal quality/speed OR reliability (at least, I didn't find there to be any!).
I look forward to testing out my Vario II as a modem. I noticed immediately how much more reliable my 3g/GPRS connection is compared to the Pro - I rarely get the dreaded "cannot connect for an unknown reason"/ "no modem at the above number" error messages with my new handset, and if i do it reconnects TEN TIMES faster, so I can only assume it will make an even better modem than the pro.
At the very least, it LOOKS nicer!
It took me about a week to get my TyTN working as a modem with my laptop. I was having all sorts of problems connecting. Eventually it started working and it's been trouble free since. I've now cancelled my Orange Data card and rely on the phone's 3G/GPRS modem via bluetooth (though USB and Infrared also work).
When you use a USB cable, do you still create a "dial up" type connection on the laptop?
If you know of some online instructions, please let me know.
Thanks
Yes it's a dial-up connection.
Instructions are on the WIKI at:

in my case it works over bluetooth without problem, i don't event have to start Modem Link application. my system is Fedora Core 5 (Linux distro).
Ditto with Windows (XP and Vista tested) - you don't need to run the Wireless Modem application to connect.

HSDPA VIA TYTYN FROM PC ..??

Hi,
I was just wondering how to use my tytyn phone as a high speed modem from my pc..? basically I want to be able to connect my phone to laptop and surf at High speeds when on the move... anyone know how to do this..? I though you just connect via active sync and it defaults to your phone connection.. but any help is appreciated.. thanks..
You need to turn Bluetooth on both devices. Pair them together and have your laptop use the Dial-Up service provided by your phone. No username and password. Just dial *99#
Thanks fo your reply.. but I dont have bluetooth on laptop.. can I use usb instead..?
Ok.. I tried the following but it didnt work... ! I connected phone to laptop via USb, then started wireless modem on phone, laptop (XP) picks up new modem, created new dial up with moblie as modem and *99# as dial up number, I see connections flashing on mobile and dial up attempts to connect but fails on user/pass , I triedleaving them blank, then user/wap (im on t-mobile) none of which worked.... any help is appreciated...
I am watching this thread with interest too.
I have a Bluetooth adapter for my laptop but would like to see what the experts say on here first..
FINALLY WORKING WITH 800KBPS DOWNLOAD..!!!!!!!
I finally got it working with my t mobile vario 2 ... if you have the same then the APN is general.t-mobile.uk and uername /pass is user pass
the rest of the settings I got from this thread..

Now im surfing the net at nearly 1mb from my car..!!!!!!!!
Awsome! Watch your driving as you're sniping that eBay item though
ive been using my hsdpa via my vario 2 over bluetooth today and its very quick, someone was saying that there speed slowed down dramatically when they used it over bluetooth but i can confirm that they were tell porkies. Ive done speed tests on many different sites today through out the day and got 1.7mb every single time.
It is just like using wifi at home on 8mb for surfing sites, obviously downloading is slower though

8525 Bluetooth woes

Hello everyone, Ive searched but come across no help
Im using a Cingular 8525 with the 2.06 firmware and windows vista ultimate. I cant get my computer to connect to it for Dial up networking. My phone allows it to use it (its an option on the phone/laptop when pairing) but it does not connect! It keeps giving me errors. I have tried to enable "Bluetooth DUN instead of USB in the internet sharing app, but nothing changes.
Also, how can I get Windows Mobile Device Center to access my phone via bluetooth? Thank you!!!
can anyone offer assistance? thanks
Anyone at all? This is driving me nuts! I even used two different bluetooth drivers in my vista pc...but still nothing. it works via usb, but not bluetooth. Help???
I got Internet connection sharing working via BT PAN with the new ROM and Vista. Never tried to use it as a modem though.

can you give us your step by step instructions on how to do that?
Id even be ok with getting it to read with a USB cable... After upgrading to WM6, I lost sync support for Vista...
I always take my time before jumping into anything new, On my experience bugs take a while to be sorted out and fixed.
My advice, stick to XP and WM5 for a year at least, then it would be a lot safer to upgrade.

Dopod C730 not able to connect to [email protected]

Hi,
I have got this Dopod C730 phone from M1. After using it, I notice that for certain Wifi connections, it cannot seems to get connected, eg [email protected] located at Jurong Point Mac and Amway Building, any my office wireless network and some other [email protected] But I have no problem connecting to my home wireless and some other Mac/KFC [email protected]
I do get full signal strength for those wifi which cannot be connect, but however, when I try to connect, it will either shows connected for few seconds (but cannot surf) then die off, or cannot be connected. After which when I try again, my phone cannot detect any wifi signal anymore, even for those which can be connected also disappeared! I will need to soft reset my phone to get back the signal.
I have even tried to do a hard-reset (reset to factory setting) under Setting -> Clear Storage, but it doesn't help. The same problem remains. My colleages have Windows Mobile 2005 and Pocket PC 2003 and they have no problem connecting to these Wifi. So I am quite sure is the phone problem.
Have anyone encountered this problem before? Any solution to this as it is really a hassle as when you need wifi connection, you do not know which [email protected] can or cannot get connected.
I have sent it for repair at SIS (Dopod Distributor) but after a week, I did not get any response from them. When I finally called them, they said no problem with the phone. Really a waste of time. Since made several emails to them but they don't seem to response promptly. I have even made an effort to record the problem own on video, sent to them, then they again never response.
Therefore I need those with Dopod C730 to go around to test the [email protected] and if you have this problem, do let me know and we can sent them up for compensation together. If you have any solution, do also let me know.

I have got the same problem connecting my JasJam (Dopod 838Pro) to my Draytek 2820Vn router at home. It detects the available network, looks as if it connects, then drops out. Eventually the access point shows up as "unavailable".
I could connect easily to my old Billion 7402VGO router, which used the same transmission channel (11). Other desktops, notebooks and my son's HP iPaq on PPC2003 connect fine.
Problem seems to be something in WM6 that disagrees with some routers, seemingly the more industrial-strength ones. I have referred the issue to Draytek, but as yet have received no illuminating response.
Not sure what OS your Dopod is running on, but if it's a WM6 variant, it's likely to a similar problem.
I cannot offer a solution only to say that I have similar problems. Connecting to my providers 3G service and to my home wireless router can be a bit problematic but even when connected and I try to find a web page the service will disconnect after a time showing a blank web page with 0bytes downloaded. I am using a Dopod 838 Pro bought in Hong Kong and using in the UK. I am thinking about upgrading from Windows Mobile 6 to 6.1 in the hope that may provide a solution.
