ActiveSync Over WIFI - does anyone know if this is possible.
I use WIFI at home on my XDAII for the internet, but would like to Sync it with my laptop without having to drag the cable home (or buy another usb cable)
Any ideas ?
Cheers
Yes, sure you could do it! Just make sure ActiveSync Connection settings on your desktop PC include Ethernet (right click on ActiveSync icon on the taskbar, choose Connection Settings and click on Allow network). Then, run ActiveSync on XDA-II and choose same 'synchronise via Network' setting - there is one on the 'Advanced' tab I think (can't say exactly, as my wife plays Lines on it right now ) - just type in your PC NETBIOS name (I guess it will be there already if you connected via USB before). I've tried it and it worked straight away (although takes few secs more to connect).

YOU BEUT ! I'D KISS YOU ... if
1. you were female
2. you were good looking
3. you were in close vacinity!
I had to run active sync, go to tools > Options > Server
And add "//myname" and untick SSL
However, my WIFI network card is set to MOBILE WEB GPRS (for IE and MSN, inbox etc) and it wanted WAP network GPRS so tried to dial up.
I changed the WIFI card to be WORK instead of INTERNET and it worked great.
Not sure if I have WORK and INTERNET set up correctly, it is basically how it came setup for GPRS access. But I don't mind changing it over now and then unless someone knows a better way?
(interesting that I managed to do an o2 Active update via the WIFI card! and not WAP GPRS - something I can't do while connected via USB? but can surf via USB )
Anyway... RESULT ! cheers
Well, obviously not female (while nothing is impossible in modern world - you could change sex, not only ROM version in your XDA ). As for the Wi-Fi card setup - it's quite simple, you'd better set it to 'Work' always unless you are connecting from Starbucks, and then change properties of 'work' connection, checking 'Connects to Internet' box and entering your proxy address. All these 'ISP' and 'Work' settings seemed to be pretty confusing to me first time until I understood how it works. You could not browse network through an USB cable (a mystery to me, since it's a normal PPP connection!), so Wi-Fi is probably the best option for all tasks - synchronisation, browsing etc.
Thanks for your help, I'll have a play
I am trying to configure my XDA2 to connect to my PC and surf the internet via a BT connection. I can Sync via BT but when I try to set up my connection it keeps asking for a phone number despite me saying it is over a Bluetooth connection and my IP is broadband. Sorry if this has been asked but I did search for any info on this.

Why do you need to setup connection for since it's already connected with ActiveSync via BT? Basically once you get connection between your device & activeSync, that's all the step you did. Unless a firewall has stopped your device from accessing to the internet; if it's the case, create exception for your activeSync, and retry browsing with your device.
hope this helps.
regards.
thanks for yor reply, Each time I try to connect the the interneet on my device it keeps trying to connect via GPRS and not through my PC via BT....
Go to ActiveSync, open the options menu & go to Rules tab.
At the bottom, you will find Pass Through Conenction, make sure its set to The Internet and not Work
Cheeeers 8)
thats it, it finally works. Thanks very much.
Glad to hear that, thomo
You're welcome anytime, dude

in wm2005 select activesync through the bt
brouse internet
i did myself
I'm having a similar problem and have effected the setting as above, however IE on my IIs says "the page you are looking for cannot be found". My computer connects fine and I have the same issue when trying to connect the device via WiLan, although I do connect to the network.
I've been trying to fiddle with the settings for a few days now but no success...anyone out there got any ideas.
Many thanks
I have mastered it now, I sync using BT on my device, leave it connetced, close Active sync on my XDA 11, Click on IE and the device connects through my PC, super duper.........
Thanks, this is what i am looking for now. I will try it
i can now only online with cable, not through Bluetooth connection
go into the advantage settings for connections
there you should be able to change the network back to my isp insted
of my network
bluetooth-internet
Hai...iam new here..i have got O2mini and would like to connect to internet via bluetooth...
i try using usb cable and activesync program to serve internet and its working.
...i succesfully connect my pc and ppc via bluetooth by using ppc activesync but when try connet to internet its still go to gprs..
pls help me...TQ
like i said again and again in this thread it's all about which network is picked in advantage settings under network connections in systems
I also tried to make a connection to the internet with activesync and usb. But with my mda doesn't work. iexplorer says the page you are looking for cannot be found. But my ppc says "connectivity the internet Pc connection". What are the settings on your ppc, so i can check?
Somebody help me.
test with ping
and maybe messenger to see if it's a dns issue
and if people use pocketplus they prob should make sure that it's not set to close insted of minimizing otherwise the connection would most likely be closed when they close activesync
Thank you very much. You solved my problem.

I want to use GPRS/EDGE while connected to ActiveSync, instead of my computers connection.
Is this possible?
My work proxy blocks IM & other sites (web-based e-mail). My preference would be to use some remote control software (Pocket Controller Pro, for instance) to control my Wizard via ActiveSync, and use my computer's keyboard (!!!), but over GPRS/EDGE.
Set your ActiveSync connection as "Work" and your net connection as "Internet" and it should connect to GPRS/EDGE even when you are on ActiveSync. At least it does on my T-Mobile MDA with the stock 2.26 ROM.
This is not working for me, on my stock T-Mo (US) 2.26 ROM.
I go into ActiveSyn 4.2, File, "This Computer is Connected to" and I select "Work"
When I try to access anything (IE to a page I haven't been to before, start MSN Messenger, etc.) it says I can't access.
As soon as I unplug the USB and refresh/SignIn, GPRS starts up and I'm good to go.
Is there no way to use GPRS while connected to ActiveSync?
In mine if i connect with agile using gprs and then i plug to pc agile stays connected to gprs...but if i start agile when connected to the pc it uses the pc connection...maybe u can try to connect ur im before connecting to the pc...but for pocket explorer i dont know as it dont maintain any kind of persistent connection...
now i know this works with wifi.. but dont know about edge..
http://www.airscanner.com/downloads/airfix/airfix.html
**EDIT**
i did install it, i connected via edge, then ran the program, then placed it in my cradle and edge stayed connected while activesync sync'd... since i am at work however i was unable to vft if i was able to browse via edge.. but their website does say something about needing to set up static ip's (when referring to wifi) i know thats not possible with edge, but wonder if i can do it with activesync... hmmmmm
the way it works for me..
its kind of crude, but works for me.
i connect my wiz via activesync and after its connected use remote display to work with it on the main computer screen.
i use process explorer to kill rapimgr.exe, wcescomm.exe and wcesmgr.exe. the remote display still is connected and takes my input from the main computer. now i can use gprs to go out on the net. in order to re-sync i start activesync on the pc again.
hope this helps,
sl

Ummm...... all I can say is WOW!
I was just about to type up a message saying the "Login to Agile then ActiveSync, Agil should retain GPRS" thing did NOT work for me....
THANK YOU! this is awesome!
Hi,
This might be a silly question, but I was just wondering if it is possible to use the internet connection on a PC if the hermes was connected to it via USB?
I dont have wifi and my PC connects directly to the internet, is there anyway the Hermes can access this connection?
J'
Right now I am using my ATT8525 as my modem.
It took me a long time to get it but I'm still not sure how I excatly what settings I did.
One thing is ""Internet Sharing"
Find that and setup for USB and then connect. Your computer might see the connection and go from there.
Wish I could help more...
It should work automatically when your Tytn is connected via ActiveSync and your desktop computer has internet. No further configuration should be necessary on default. Just open the Tytn's IE and try it out ...
Oh my bad... I got the question backwards
Hi,
Is there a way, to only use GPRS/UMTS connection while the device is connected via USB? When I'm connected via USB, my Hermes tries to use the ActiveSync connection for Internet, which won't work (company proxy), so I want to have UMTS connection, but still be able to remote-control via USB...
mine use gprs when i choose my isp in settings->connections->connections-Advanced-select network
even when connected to activesync
hm, I have for both settings there "E-Plus Internet", i.e. my provider... still it doesn't connect. As soon as I disconnect USB, it works.
then i would try unchecking enable advanced network functionality
in usb to pc in connections
still the same... doesn't connect

On the PC head into ActiveSync, open up the Connection Settings for the device in question, try unchecking "Allow data connections on device when connected to PC".
Disconnect the device from USB, then reconnect and sync, then try to access the internet on the device.
hm, I thought exactly that option should be checked, because it says "allow wireless connections while connected to the PC". Nonetheless, I unchecked it, dis-/reconnected it, still no go.
Is this because you dont have the net on your PC?
Maybe your provider doesn't allow tethering. I.e. using the phones internet connection whilst connected to the pc.
You can use PDAnet ,download trial from here
http://software.palminfocenter.com/product.asp?id=4237
this will allow you to use the internet whilst connected to the pc, but this will also mean the pc can also use the internet of the phone, i am not sure if this is exactly what you want, as you dont indicate the reason why you want to be able to connect to the net on the device. Anyway using PDAnet, you will still be able to sync, browse and use the device as you normally would, as well as access the internet on the PPC and PC.

There is internet on the PC, though behind a proxy with auth (and some blocked stuff). Since the proxy auth isn't RFC conform it seems, using the internet connection on the phone doesn't work with most programs (i.e. weather updates), some programs even don't have a proxy option (and the one from "connections" doesn't work either). That's why I want the phone to connect itself by UMTS, while I still can remotecontrol it with PocketController. As everybody already said, it should be possible.

mh, the PC shouldn't use the phone as modem, that would violate the security restrictions here badly. I'll try PDAnet and see if I can restrict that.
Edit: PDANet also can't connect. could it be possible, that it is some Windows policy on the Desktop preventing that?
Can you turn Data Connection off in CommManager on the PDA?

hm, not really....
I am interested in this as well.
I have the Titan (Sprint Mogul) and would like to be able to connect it to my work computer VIA USB and be able to charge the phone and control it via MyMobiler but the phone should use its EVDO cellular connection for the internet. Instead it appears to use the internet that my work computer has which blocks certain sites and ports for IMAP and POP.
I would like the phone to be able to check gmail (via IMAP) as well as go to any website I would like.
