after a upgrade that didn't work (RSU) my xda is dead, after a cold boot the message appears
"wallaby bootloader v5.15" GSM ERROR
after a search in this forum, i found the yorch.net link and bakked a ROM.
What are the protocols to put everything back again, i bought a cardreader and a SD Card, and put the ROM in the card reader and put the copy on the Card. Nothing is working, and now the card reader cannot read the card again,
Did i maked 2 horreble mistakes, a dead xda and card?
sa a you can see i'm a dumbo with these things.
Please help me, of a link to a posting thats working out for me

To be honest, I think you may have ****ed it. If it says GSM error, I'd presume that you screwed the radio stack, so it's be tuned to a different network/GSM, (e.g. 900, 1800, 1900 etc) I'm still a beginner but if you edit the radio stack, you can't downgrade which would mean it's been set to a different GSM country/code thingy.
I've tried upgrading ROM once but it screwed up first time, but I made sure it wouldn't modify the radio stack. With the ROM's you can downgrade but with the radio stack it's permanent.
Good luck, getting it working...I just hope you haven't killed the stack, but me being a learner still, I only know so much.
I have an SD/MMC card arriving to try to get mine back in action, but time will tell if it's possible.
so ****ed up
hereby i understand that there is no posibillity to work again with my XDA
I have no idea what to now, my knowledge about these things is over my head.
I tryed to make a new rom, but from what and where to ??
In the trashcan with it.
Not so fast. I'm not an expert on this but I have found that almost anything on this unit can be fixed.
I have done what I am telling you nelow and it worked for me.
Download the XDA OS Image Tools application from the xda-developers site (http://www.xda-developers.com/XDAtools). Burn your rom to an sd card using the XDA OS Image Tools application and your card reader (the application won't work with the card reader on windows 98 but xp and 2000 works fine). Next put the sd card in your xda and go into bootloader mode. It should recognize the OS on the sd card and allow you to flash the xda. Afterward, pull the card out and hard reboot the xda. This should get you up and running. Next, you need to get the radio stack back. This can be done by first determining what stack you want/need to put on the phone (there are a few on http://www.yorch.net in the Upgrades section). Once you've downloaded a radio stack you need to extract out the four files (monitor_ul_bs.m0, monitor_us_bl.map, RSUpgrade.cp64, RSUpgrade.exe). Connect your xda to your pc via activesync and copy the 4 files to your windows directory on the xda. You can also reformat your sd card and copy the four files to the sd card and transfer them to your xda using the sd card slot on the xda. In any event, once you copied the files onto your xda, go into file explorer on your xda find the RSUpgrade.exe file and double click it. It should begin upgrading your radio stack. Afterward, reset your phone and you should have a completely functional xda (oS and radio stack).
Regards,
I forgot to mention that you should make sure the phone portion of your xda is off when you upgrade the radio stack. I caused myself problems upgrading the stack with the phone portion on and it took me a while to get it back working.
and now I'm very confused, because i downloaded the latest XDAtools.exe , i have install these and then, if i go to the OSImageTool, i can browse to.......?? it seams it looking for a file *.nb1 (windows CE) where is that file, i have never made a backup (ROM) from my XDA.
So how i am makeing a booteble ROM

Go to www.yorch.net, choose your rom, uncheck all the additional software, at the bottom left of screen are all options for download, choose the sd card method, once downloaded, write it to your card reader/writer using xdatools then follow instructions from previous person posting.
I did bakked a rom at yorch.net, the XDA downloaded it and after a cold boot, the only screen i get is a blank screen with an icon of a keybord in the right corner in the bottom. nothing is working and the configurationscreen of windows is also not there.
what have i done wrong???
i'm getting deperate now.

Can you advise what was happening on the xda while you were flashing the rom? You should have seen numbers at the bottom of your xda increasing incrementally while the flashing process was in progress. Also once the actual flashing was done you should have seen something like "checksum ok" and "cold reboot" (or cold reset). Did you see that?
I think the battery wasn't in full charghe, because during the updateproces the screen was off, he was on 18% of the update that time.
After that, everything is going wrong.
From the sound of it, you didn't flash it using the bootloader process. Using the booloader process the xda should not be connected to the pc at all and the flashing process doesn't show percentages of completion. If your xda screen was off and you saw 18% complete I assume you saw 18% complete on your pc. If so, you were not flashing it via the bootloader. The bootloader process doen't rely onn the pc at all as your xda is never connected to the pc during the process and the screen is always on during the process.
Using xdatools browse and locate your downloaded rom (nb1 file) as your source file.
Then, the destination should be the sd card (not the xda card slot but the sd card reader that you connected - it should show up as a choice if it's properly connected and you're not using windows 98)
Hit the copy button. Once it's done, you have a bootable sd card.
Put the sd card into your xda.
Go into booloader by pressing the power button and soft resetting at the same time.
xda should recognize the sd card and allow you to flash the os.
Try this and see if you can get this far. you have to get to that point to proceed.

Has Wallaby Bootloader V5.15
I have already a ROM file NK.nb1 file from the ROMkitchen,
but i don't know how to get it working on my messed up XDA.
Have read a lot in this forum but really don't know much about programming ;-(
is it possible to make a copy from my working XDA (with XDAtools) and then replace the NK.nb1 file or something? and how can i get it into it?
read a lot about Bootloader but sorry don't know how to handle ;-(
If someone could help me -> THANKZ
Greetingz from Holland,

ok...
if you dont have an SD-CARD reader, get one!
then, from ROM UPDATE FORUM, find and download XDA TOOLS.
RUN xda tools.
it will ask you for source, (most likely C:\program files\RUU\ENGLISH)
and will ask for destination, since xda dont work, use SD READER
Start Copying to card
when done, insert card into xda
reboot via bootloader ( thats when you powerup with on/off button pressed and soft reset)
IT should detect that there is a system on the card, and ask if u want to install it.
press the ACTION button for yes. (thats the big silver button between the fone buttons)
thats realy IT
if you need more help... email me, or better yet add me to MSN messenger, if u have one. i'll walk you thru it.
thanks to a great warranty, i've practiced and tested alot of xda's
but now that i mastered it ( i think) i stuck to one
Thankzzzzzzz
It worked
Was a little late so i didn´t do it wright myself
Copied the file to SD
instead of doing it with XDA tools to SD
Works now fine.
Had some trouble with GSM and T/mobile card, but copied with XDA tools from working XDA to SD and now it works.
Keep this file on an SD card so now i can try to load ROM´s or upgrade to 2003 cause i can always put it back, so no risk!
Thankz Again,
Greetz Marco
I created one nb1 file using Jeff's kitchen, use XDATools write it to a SD Card, slot it into my XDA, press on/off button + soft reset key, bootloader screen (wallaby bootloader v5.17) appear, and say 'GSM OK', if press Action Key now will bring me to "Diagnostics" menu, if press Calendar key bring me to "Utilities" menu, if press Contact key bring me to "Flash Tools" menu, and if press Record Key bring will me to "USB Flash Mode", it didn't auto detect the SD card to allow me to flash my device, may I know where have I done wrong, anybody help? Thanks!
Sounds like the ROM imaged didn't make it to the SD card.
Do this test and report back on your results.
With the SD card still in the slot do a soft reset, if the image is on the card
your XDA should ask if you want to format the card.
HTH
It did ask me whether want to format the SD card.
Ok give it another shot but this time try using XDArit 1.0 to right to SD.
For more info. on XDArit visit: http://www.xda-developers.com/XDArit/
XDArit version 1.0 can be download from the software section at:
http://www.yorch.net
Just in case here is my how to use XDArit to write nk.nb1 or nk.nbf to your SD card (aka the Bootloader Method!)
1. Place XDArit and the nk.nb1 or nk.nbf file in the same folder and start XDArit.
2. Select your SD card (disk drive) from the drop down menu.
3. Select Write to SD
Notice that the Windows CE box is already checked so just click the browse button at the end of that window.
4. Select your (nk.nb1 or nk.nbf) image and then Open
Notice by default XDArit will open looking for a *.nb1 file but if you’re going to use a .nbf file you’ll have to manually change the “Files of Type” to *.nbf
Notice that nk.nbo / nk.nbo was automatically added as your boot-loader and its check box is unchecked so leave it that way and click OK. XDArit should start writing to the card.
When XDArit has finished writing the image put the SD-card into the XDA and hold the power button and soft reset. You’ll be taken to the below screen:
SD DOWNLOAD
Card Type:
CE OS & BOOT
Press action to Download
Or
Press REC to Exit
Press action to download and it will start the download/restore from the SD card.
Follow the on screen instructions once its "Completed" which will consist of a "Soft Boot/Reset".
HTH
&
Good Luck
Hi Qman, I followed exactly your instruction, but still the same wallaby bootloader screen, I can't see any sd download screen???
Sorry to hear that, I'm not to hip on wallaby bootloader v5.17 but
it works just with wallaby bootloader v5.15 works!

similar situation but somewhat different.
I cooked a rom in kalex kitchen and wrote it to my sd card with my t-mobile pocket pc phone connected to activesync. I then flashed the phone from the sd card but got a checksum error at the end. I did a hard reset but only got a blank screen. Right now I can access the bootloader but that's it. I don't have a good backup rom because (not thinking) I wrote over it with the rom from kalex kitchen figuring it would become my backup (it must have somehow been corrupt). I tried writing the rom I previously had on my phone to an sd card directly through a card reader on windows 98, windows XP and windows ME all with no success. Thus, I'm dead in the water. I have no clue why I can't flash to the card reader. I went through a ton of posts here but have not found the answer yet to get me back working. Does anyone have any ideas on this? I have no clue why xdatools and xdarit are not working (especially on XP - I know they should not work directly to an sd card on windows 98 but I tried anyhow out of desperation). Please help.
got it working
used xdarit on another pc running windows xp and successfully wrote the rom to the sd card using my card reader. i then flashed my phone using the bootloader method and i'm up and working again!
hello,
i'm using the xdatools to put the nk file on the SD card, but when i hard reset my xda, i get into bootloader 5.22 mode, it says "gsm ok", and when i press the action button i get into a test menu.
How can i load the nk file from my sd card? please help.
thanks guys.
Did you place the ROM on the SD card by browsing to your device (...) or using the drop down and choosing your SD reader or XDA SD slot?
I had the same problem until I used the drop down... if you browse to your card, XDA tools will not create a bootable SD.
i used directy dropping down the box to SD
When you use the drop down menu on the destination there should be a drive letter next to your card eg: F: 59.60M USB sd reader or similar, choose that and it should work.
do we soft reset or hard reset
well after loading nk.nbf file
do we soft reset or hard reset to get into bootloader.
also,
the drive letter in destination folder will come if u use card reader,
but if in expansion slot than it does not give the drive letter.
Hello
I did hard reset .
I am having this same problem...
I download to the SD card through the cradle, using the phone's expansion slot. I do a SOFT RESET, to get the bootloader, and all I get is a GSM OK message. If I hit the action button, I then get into the test menu.
Hello
Means you have no nb.1 on your SD card .
as per the instructions I've been following that have been listed in detail here on this site as well as the att siemens support forums, you are supposed to copy the nk.nbf file and use that with the OS Image tool...is this incorrect?
OSImage
I just installed new ROM from new ROM Kitchen .
http://lumpistefan.dyndns.org/
1) Get the file on your desktop ( download or ...I do not care)
2) Open OSInage
3) Source  Brows to your file
4) Destination  your SD card (where is it :?: -on your phone
or on the SD card reader)
5) Copy the file to SD card (takes 20 seconds)
6) Remove the XDA from the cradle and soft reset with power button held in.
7) When it says press action to download, push the big button between dial and hangup.
8) Hard reset.
9) Injoy the rest of your day
No way getting SD-Card recognized
Hello,
i have the same problem, the ROM (Made with xda-tools or XDArit) on sd-card is not recognized to download when i boot into bootloader!
I found no way to get this running.
Any ideas?

most likely, your wallaby bootloader is not 5.15. Anything above 5.15 won't work. I could downgrade from 5.17 and 5.22, but not from 6.22

I'm in the same situation - I have v6.22 on T-Mobile 4.01.00ENG and can't do anything, even with an SD card!
Even the BootLoader downgrade tool with XDATools doesn't work.
Any help with this would be appreciated by many other users in the same situation.
The downgrade batch file in XDA-Tools doesn't work for a lot of people (didn't work for me either). However the wallaby patch should work. Otherwise, use XDARit to downgrade the bootloader using the .nb0 file that comes with the downgrade batch in XDA-Tools.
You write the wallaby patch onto the SD card using XDARit, go into the bootloader and enter diagnostics. Then take the SD card out, write bootloader 5.15 onto the card using the bootloader option in XDARit, and place the SD card back into the device. Then from the patched diagnostics screen select Restore SD and it will recognize a bootloader update. I'd recommend saving your original bootloader from the diagnostics first, but that wouldn't work for me for some reason.
i had a 5.17 boot loader that i downgraded to 5.15 via OS image tools, i also downloaded a rom file from the Kitchen & wrote it on SD but i still can't load from SD & i only get the test phase thing

Try using XDRit instead of XDA-Tools (use the older version of XDRit instead of the newer version). I'm not sure what you mean by "test phase", but maybe your bootloader screwed over during the update? If so you may need to rectify that first, but that's definately beyond me. If you burn the image correctly onto the card it should pick up automatically as soon as you enter the bootloader with 5.15. If you don't burn it correctly then it won't be picked up.
I'm just throwing in my 2c because I've made all this stuff work with a 5.15 downgrade. There's a possibility the thing simply doesn't like your card too, so try a different 64MB SD.
well i do have a 256 mb card & as far as i can tell the downgrade worked fine, now to use the xdarit files to i need to have the SD reader or i can do it the same way i do in XDAtools which is directly into the card through Active Sync
hi,
well i tried to upgrade my xda1 to windows 2003,
here is the description of the problem i m facing....
i used xda tools(osimage tool) to transfer nk.nbf file to my sd card-> go into bootloader(wallaby bootloader 5.17)
->says gsm ok and starts taking test(like tap test, recording test, sd card test etc) which it should not...
and is not loading the os software. (getting stuck in one of the test like sd card test)
well following things i tried:
1. transfered nk.nbf file, tried both from siemens site as well as from yorche.net site--->both giving same problem.------->using xdatools.
2. tried loading the sd ,tried both destinations -->xda slot and as well as the card reader.
3. using drop down only to choose the destination.
4. also after loading sd the current rom asks to format (which means sd is loaded properly)
5. initially it was not loading the bootloader then i fixed it using xda tools , after that i started getting wallaby bootloader 5.17
6. now after going to bootloader it starts taking various test and shows no sign of loading the new os.
--------------
now i have moved as per the instruction and tried everything mentioned above to install wk3 but all in vain....
dont know where the problem seems to lie....
need suggestions desperately...
--------------
current rom:3.17.03
stack:4.21
--------------
current rom working ok.
--------------
maybe it's a problem with the nbf file content ... did u try burning the nbf file directly to the ROM using the XDAtools ?
You arent hitting any other button when entering bootloader are you? Just press the stylus in reset while holding power, it shouldnt go into test mode unless another button is pushed, maybe you have a button stuck or something.
any more suggestions............
well if burning means choosing source to nk.nbf and destination to drop down
to sd card using xda tools then yes i did burning....
also i m sure no other buttons are pressed or thing like that....
any more suggestions............
I meant by burning to make the destination to be the XDA flash ROM
any more..
ya i tried burning to.,...
same problem.
can your sdcard reader read whats on the sdcard (it's not suppose to be able to read after it's been flashed with the rom)
also are you 100% sure that your nbf file is valid ? maybe it's broken
more suggestions ....
well after loading sd card , i cant browse to read it, moreover xda asks to format, which is the sign that card is loaded ok.
secondly i have tried nk.nbf file from siemens as well as yorche.net,
both should not give same problem, which it is.
this mention the 5.17 bootloader you should read it

The best way that I've found is to find somebody with a XDA that has the 5.15 bootloader then do a CE+BOOT TO SD then do a SD restore.
Sounds like a good project for some of the ROM Kitchen owners doesn't!
Hi,
I posted earlier http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=6418, and I have played around some more with the XDA with no success. I have now bought a 64MB SD card and am unsure as to how the ROM image on my PC gets onto the SD card. This is how I have been doing it:
1) Insert SD card into XDA
2) Place XDA into cradle
3) XDA then ActiveSync’s to the PC
4) Run OSImageTool.exe and select the following –
a. Source: “C:\Documents and Settings\Paul\Desktop\orig.nb1”
b. Destination: “XDA SD card slot – unknown size”
5) Then I press “copy” and I see the progress bar go across to 100%. After this appears to finish, the program just sits there not telling me it’s finished. I assume that it’s all okay and I then close the program
6) Take XDA off cradle and hold power button down whilst doing a warm-reset
7) The following appears: “Wallaby Bootloader v6.22 – GSM OK” – nothing else happens, and from what I have read it is supposed to ask if I want to perform a ROM upgrade. However, I can get into the diagnostic and flash tools by pressing the action button etc, but nothing is in there to upgrade the ROM.
Does the fact the OSImageTool destination says “XDA SD card slot – unknown size” matter? I’m assuming not because when I have transferred the ROM using the above steps, the XDA asks if I want to format the card; meaning that the transfer worked okay. Do I have to have an SD card reader/writer on my PC to get the ROM onto the SD card?
I have read a little about a Bootloader patch – do I need to run this, and how do I get it onto the XDA – using the same method?
What I would really appreciate is to physically speak to someone in Australia who has done this before who can spend 10 minutes on the phone with me. I guess I just need a number to call, and you could PM me or MSN me ([email protected]) so I can contact you or give you my number (whatever you’re comfortable with). I would be very appreciative of any help that can fix this, as all I want to do is get my three-day old XDA working again!
Any other comments and help in relation to solving this hair-challenging issue would be great!
Thanks,
Paul…
Hi mate, it looks like you need to patch the bootloader, read here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=5923&highlight=patch+bootloader
This is the only guide that works for patching the bootloader (I tried them all before finding the right one) :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=3274
Yes, you do need an SD card reader/writer, if you search around you should be able to get a cheap one. If you read that guide you will be able to upgrade from SD card/bootloader.

hi! i downloaded the windows mobile for tmobile in yorch.net twice now, whenever i EXTRACT the file this always comes out "T-mobileROM40021\NK.nbf could not be extracted correctly!".
Need help.. do you have any suggestions on some alternative sites so i can download it again?

I have a siemens sx56 with AT&T. I was trying to upgrade the ROM version to unlock it. Using XDA developer software and during this process, somehow the connection between the computer and the phone stopped (active Sync). Now the phone is not responding and the screen still displaying the upgrading process. I tried to reconnect but the Active sync does not recognize the devise. I read in this forum that you can solve this problem by using SD card with a good ROM version. Here is what I did. I copied the NK.nbf to the SD card using my computer SD read/write slot. I inserted the SD card in the phone and did the boot loader mode. What I got is "Wallaby boot loader v5.22 GSM OK" that set. Does the phone will automatically ask to press action to start flashing or I have to press a certain key. I tryed all the keys but they give me different tests that they work fine. So far I am not able to find the key that will install the the cooked rom. After that, when I tried to use the SD card in the computer, it did not recognize the card and ask me to format the SD card. I tried the fat and the fat 32 format and download NK.nb1 and/or NK.nbf and again I got the samething. Do I need to down load the ROM file using the XDAtool or just copying the file from the computer to sd directory will do it. I would really appreciate it if someone points out the best way of handling this problem (i.e. get the phone to work with the appropriate ROM and unlocking it) thanks.

Bro, you shouldn't change the Sd fat you erased what's written on it anyway your unit is still on the safe side and you can bring it to normal.
First of all downgrade your bootloader to 5.15 >>>

Hi,
I also have exactly the same problem with my Siemens SX56 as those of Seif's. My Wallaby's boot loader version is 5.22. Ramram said that the first thing to do is to downgrage bootloader. But I couldn't understand how to downgrade the bootloader because I do not have a copy of old bootloader. Should I use 'OSImageTools' or 'XDArit' to write backed up CE image to SD card?
Seif, how did you solve your problem?

You need XDArit to write the rom to your SD read the past post on how to copy rom to your SD which is the safest way of installing the rom into the device, by using XDAtools press on FIX BROKEN BOOTLOADER this will downgrade you bootloader to 5.15 don't forget to connect your unit to the cradle when you want to downgrade.
I recommend 1rst of all to make a quick search in threads to be totaly ready for this

The problem was solved. Here is what I did. I copied the NK.nbf file to the SD card using the XDAtools. It seems that the XDAtools uses special format for the bootloader that well recognize the ROM file on the SD card. Rafia your bootloader (v5.22) is fine you do not need to downgrade it.
You should follow this procedure:
1. Install ActiveSync that comes with the device.
2. download XDAtools from this site and install it in your computer.
3. Cook the ROM ( or get it by extracting the zip file from the XDA developers special edition ROM.)
4. Use the XDAtools to copy the cooked NK.nbf file from your computer to the directory of the SD card
5. Insert the SD card in the dead device and go to the bootloader mode (soft reset while pressing power key). Make sure it has more than 80% battery before starting.
6. If it is still working and the bootloader ver. is older than 6.22, it will ask you to press action to start flasing.
7. Once finished, remove the SD card and hard reset, wait 60 sec and hard reset again.
Good Luck and special thanks to Biso for his help.

Thanks a MILLION for this info. I'm in the same boat, with bootloader 5.22. One question though, when I'm in bootloader mode, which option do I choose from the menu to transfer the ROM to my device from the SD card? Will there be something automatically coming up? Or will I use one of the options listed below:
1. CE ROM TO SD
2. BOOT TO SD
3. CE + BOOT TO SD
4. GSM ROM TO SD
5. CE + GSM TO SD
By the way, so I never do anything to ruin my device again, can someone please explain what each option does?? I really don't have a clue.
as you can read from the menu you type in all these options are to the SD card
and they are to backup i suppose
rom upgrading should start automatic when a sd card with valid rom is in the sdport
and you are in the bootloader
maybe it ask you i forget but it's not something you have to find browsing
the menu's

Thanks for answering my question. Now I simply need to find a really good ROM to use to load back onto my device. What I would like to do is end up with Windows Mobile 2003, but the device is locked at the moment.
Can someone recommend a ROM for me to load onto the device so that I can then unlock it and THEN upgrade to 2003? Or is there a 2003 ROM out there that will also unlock? Originally, I ended up in this predicament by upgrading to the 2003 upgrade from Rogers AT&T, but that locked the device on me. I then tried to use a cooked 2003 ROM, and that's where I am now, without a useable device.
Thanks for all replies!

First of all get the "Special Edition Rom" to your device Unlock it then cook any other Rom you prefer
Special Edition Rom at http://cuba.calyx.nl/~jsummers/XDA/XDA-developers-SER-v12.exe
Good luck

Thanks, Ramram. I'm sure I'll have more success this time, but it's just odd that I went from a 2002 ROM, which was unlocked, to the Rogers 2003 ROM, and the phone was locked after that.
I guess I should stay away from that Rogers ROM then?

Why to worry about the Rogers Rom you know now a way to unlock your phone.
I assume the Rogers rom is based like the At&t rom which it has the sound clipping bug , so I'd rather say that you could cook a T-mobile rom 4.01.16 WM2003 and try it it does not have the sound clipping bug..
